Summermetrics: 10 Ways of Looking at a Very Bad Movie “We as summer moviegoers should probably be grateful for Rock of Ages , the first big film of this blockbuster season to signify nothing other than good old-fashioned Hollywood narcissism — no knotty questions about the soupy, staple-y origins of man and xenomorph; no referendums on anyone’s increasingly perplexing career; no hyena laughing about the misfortune of the hubris-salted studio executives who green lighted John Carter . Just Tom Cruise in leather pants, with a tattoo of a heart above his actual biological heart. It’s the platonic ideal of summer cinema: You are going to go to the theater, and people are going to entertain you inside of it,” writes Grantland .

John Waters & Provincetown Film Festival Fete Roger Corman

The Provincetown International Film Festival feted Roger Corman over the weekend with John Waters taking to the stage in a laugh-filled interview before a packed house in the eccentric enclave’s town hall. The maverick producer/director/actor offered up highlights from his long career and offered up a litany of tales from his years the low budget B-movie throne. While distributors consistently have spats with the MPAA for getting a “harsh” rating, Roger Corman recalled a time when he went back to the MPAA to ask for a “harsher” rating. “Eight year-olds” don’t want to see a G-rated film,” John Waters observes… Roger Corman received the festival’s 2012 Filmmaker on the Edge Award, while actress Parker Posey received the Excellence in Acting Award and Kirby Dick took the event’s Faith Hubley Career Achievement Award. Dick’s latest, The Invisible War caught a good amount of buzz at the festival with a number of insiders already predicting the title will get an Oscar nomination. But the weekend was owned by Corman. Check out the interview here…

LA Film Fest: Ponder the Possibilities in David Fenster’s Pincus Poster Debut

Writer-director David Fenster’s PINCUS is earning raves at the LA Film Fest , where it debuted this weekend in narrative competition. Drawing acclaim for its naturalistic documentary-style storytelling, Pincus follows one man’s spiritual search — part autobiographical film, part fiction, part slacker comedy — using footage of filmmaker Fenster’s conversations with his real life father, who lives with Parkinson’s disease. Pincus premiered to kudos last weekend at the LA Film Fest, and screens again on Thursday. Find more info on the film here . Previously, Fenster made his directorial debut with 2004’s Trona , which also starred actor David Nordstrom. Bonus endorsement: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs / 21 Jump Street co-director Phil Lord serves as executive producer and has been enthusiastically supporting the film on Twitter . Synopsis: Pincus Finster is in way over his head: trying to find a way to stall his father’s Parkinson’s, halfheartedly taking up yoga to meet girls, and letting his only friend Dietmar, an aging German illegal alien, get drunk and sleep in the homes they’re supposed to be remodeling. Pincus spends his time stoned and fumbling for some sort of spiritual truth. Drawing from his own life, director and writer David Fenster has cast his family and friends (including his father, Paul Fenster, who has been living with Parkinson’s for 13 years) and woven documentary footage shot in and around his hometown of Miami, Florida into the story. Seamlessly combining naturalistic storytelling with documentary elements and hints of metaphysic mystery, PINCUS is a soulfully handcrafted film that explores the gulf between cynicism and wonder with quiet revelation. Rumor: Universal Wants Angelina Jolie to Direct 50 Shades of Grey?

File under WTF, Out of Left Field, and Most Probably Not Happening, Like Ever: According to Deadline , rumor has it that Angelina Jolie , coming off of her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey , has been in the unofficial running to join the 50 Shades of Grey adaptation — not as Mrs. Robinson, not as some kinky bondage-enthusiast, but as… director. Mike Fleming reports from the floor of the rumor mill: “I’ve heard rumors about the possibility of Angelina Jolie having a conversation or two about directing it… The studio says that no discussions have been had, but they note that if she was interested, that the studio would be also. They loved her directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey .” I’m not sure what about Blood and Honey would suggest that Jolie is a great pick to direct the steamy erotica adaptation, though she has won “honors” in various men’s magazines for being the Sexiest Woman Alive, and those things ought to count for something. In any case, Fleming says, Jolie’s busy. “I’m told she’s completely focused on her next film, Maleficent , at Disney and isn’t entertaining other offers at this moment.” So maybe the Jolie train has already come and gone. Assuming so, which director would you like to see tackle 50 Shades of Grey ? I’ll start with a few: Adrian Lyne (via Deadline commenters). Just Jaeckin. John Waters. Go! [ Deadline ]
