Iron Man Recast? Robert Downey, Jr ‘Would Really Hate’ That

The actor tells MTV News he expects to play the superhero ‘for a long while.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Downey Jr. at the “Avengers” premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday Photo: Getty Images With the Avengers finally assembling next week, Marvel Studios and the stars behind the heroes have already begun to look ahead to the next films set in the comic-book universe. At the closing night celebration of the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday night (April 28), Robert Downey, Jr. spoke with MTV News about the future of his character, Iron Man, and addressed recent talk about other actors playing the role in the future. At CinemaCon last week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige mentioned to Badass Digest that when it came time for Downey to leave the role of Tony Stark behind, a new actor could pick up right where he left off, like in the James Bond films. But Downey told MTV News on the red carpet that he wasn’t so thrilled about the idea of someone else playing Tony Stark. “I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes,” he said. An infamous jokester, he couldn’t help but ask, “I wonder who’s playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you’re here to tell me?” But Downey can’t be Iron Man forever, and while the 42-year-old actor couldn’t say for sure how many movies he has left in him, he made clear he’ll be interested as long as they remain good films. “I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while,” Downey said. “As usual in my book, it’s all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of reaction to. If they keep doing that, maybe I’ll keep showing up.” In Downey’s immediate Marvel future, there’s next year’s ” Iron Man 3 .” The past few weeks have seen actors like Sir Ben Kingsley , Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain potentially joining the cast, and Downey said that he could not wait to work with “any or all of them.” “It’s funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion,” Downey said. “‘Iron Man 3’ is really shaping up to be something special. We start in a couple weeks. I’m sure I’ll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead.” What secrets, you ask? Well, it was recently announced that “Iron Man 3” would be co-produced in China. As for whether any filming would take place in the East, Downey was less forthcoming. “I’d like to tell you all my secrets,” he said,” but I forget them.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’: Reviews Are In!

Critics weren’t wowed by director Guy Ritchie’s 2009 original, and this time around is no different. By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Downey Jr. in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” Robert Downey Jr. ‘s steampunk take on the classic literary detective returns for a new mystery in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” The first film from 2009 didn’t exactly wow the critics, and the sequel is no exception. The mixed response ranges from “better than the first” to “one of the worst of the year,” but the chemistry between Downey and Jude Law earned the critics’ highest complements. We’ve rounded up some of the best reviews to give you a sense what the critics are saying: The Story “As the film opens, Watson is paying a visit to his occasional partner in solving crimes. His wedding to Mary (Kelly Reilly) is fast approaching and Holmes is to be his best man. The intrigues begin in earnest with the bachelor party Holmes throws at an eccentric gentleman’s club, in which none of Dr. Watson’s pals show up but two new characters do — a very wry Stephen Fry as Holmes’ brother, Mycroft, and a Gypsy fortuneteller Madam Simza Heron, played by Noomi Rapace. Holmes has had a chance encounter (or was it) with the lovely Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) who seemed clearly over her head in something that involves Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris, the age-old nemesis, but newly arrived to the films and as dapper as he is in ‘Mad Men’).” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times Robert Downey Jr. “Really, if [director Guy] Ritchie were on the case, even a little bit, how could he not notice Robert Downey Jr. giving the worst performance of his career? This is a director of some stature. He could talk to his star and help him. Here is an actor capable of dazzling audiences with his virtuosity, and yet there he is, slack and flat, phoning it in with a blithe delivery and his accent going in and out. Downey knows — of course he knows — that he could sleepwalk through the movie, and it will still be a hit.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle The Direction “Ritchie has done it again. In an act of criminal negligence, he’s wasted Robert Downey Jr. — an actor with the perfect verbal dexterity to play Sherlock Holmes — in a sequel that eliminates smarts in favor of relentless headbanging. 2009’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ was lousy, but it was also a big hit. So the sequel, ‘A Game of Shadows,’ is more of the stupid same. It wouldn’t matter so much if Downey and Jude Law, as the bromantic Dr. Watson, didn’t look so ready to turn on the cerebral dazzle. Instead, Ritchie treats them like action goons out of his ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ basement.” — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone As a Sequel “After Guy Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ (2009) with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law grossed something like half a billion dollars, this was no time to rethink the approach. What they have done, however, is add a degree of refinement and invention, and I enjoyed this one more than the earlier film.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Final Word “It’s elementary. If you enjoyed the first ‘Sherlock Holmes’ directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson, then you’ll likely leave the sequel feeling satiated.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ Is MTV’s #3 Song Of 2011

Talk That Talk leadoff broke records and quickly became a definitive single for the unstoppable star. By Jason Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Rihanna ‘s “We Found Love” didn’t have that many days on the calendar to make an impact — after all, it was just released in October. But that didn’t stop it from being the chart monster of the fall as well as #3 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 . It was a classic upon arrival, a song that immediately felt like it had been here forever instead of just three short months. The leadoff single from Talk That Talk is where Rihanna fully embraced EDM . Produced by Calvin Harris, “We Found Love” is a swirling party track about love and loss, the rare song that manages to be sad and joyous all at once. And it is a pinnacle of the pop/dance crossover, a throwback to ’90s raves that could make even the most stoic lover of pop want to break out a glow stick and just dance. MTV correspondent Sway Calloway moderated a spirited roundtable discussion with some of our very own experts: James Montgomery and Rob Markman (MTV News), Yomi Desalu and Malika Quemerais (MTV Music and Talent) and Tamar Anitai and Nicole James (MTV.com). The panel managed to narrow down the Best Songs of 2011, with “We Found Love” besting top 10 tracks from the Throne, Chris Brown and Katy Perry. Just how did “We Found Love” hit #3? Watch the debate below! “That song came out and went to #1, and when a song has that kind of impact that quickly, it deserves to be recognized,” Quemerais said during the discussion. Montgomery went even further in his personal Top 25 Songs of 2011 column : “A few weeks ago, someone told me ‘We Found Love’ would ultimately end up being Rihanna’s signature hit, and at the time, I sort of laughed him off. But the more I think about it, he may be right. Or at least on the right track. “From the icy synth strains to Calvin Harris’ hard-charging pre-chorus, it most certainly is the song that best represents pop, circa 2011, and given RiRi’s standing in the field, perhaps in time, it will become her set-closing number too. For now, at least, I’m content to bask in “Love” ‘s masterful mix of the carnal and, well, the club.” Get more of Montgomery’s personal picks for the Top Songs of the Year! Beyond being a definitive pop dance track, “WFL” was also a historic single for Rihanna. “Love” just completed its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna her 11th #1 hit, which puts her one ahead of Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson. “It’s the symbolic one that breaks the record and she gets credit for that,” Markman said during the debate. Our panel of experts thinks there’s no stopping “We Found Love” from dominating the year ahead. “I think this song is going to carry over into much of 2012,” Anitai said. “Then maybe it will be on next year’s list,” Montgomery added. The “We Found Love” video director breaks down the song below. All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Sequel Is ‘More Sophisticated’

‘We all raised our game, creatively,’ director Guy Ritchie tells MTV News of ‘Game of Shadows.’ By Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros If you’ve caught a trailer for the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which hits theaters Friday, you might have noticed that there is a lot going on. Holmes ( Robert Downey Jr. ) and Watson ( Jude Law ) have carried their bromance over from the 2009 original, with Holmes having issues with Watson’s pending marriage and his wily love interest Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams). Work-wise, the curiously successful Holmes and Watson duo now have to contend with a mysterious new female character (Noomi Rapace) and a formidable and familiar future supervillain, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). When MTV News caught up with Downey and director Guy Ritchie, we asked them to explain what new excitement “Game of Shadows” offers that we didn’t see in the first film. “I think it’s a superior product, and I’m very tough on these sorts of things,” Downey said. “I think we return to one of the great original face-offs-with-a-supervillain stories in Arthur Conan Doyle’s lexicon, and I think that it’s a little bit more thoughtful. I think the female roles are much more central. It’s a more nicely balanced bit of entertainment.” Ritchie admitted that the success of the first film meant he had pleased audiences enough that he could make this movie for himself in a way, zeroing in on his sensibilities and what he likes in an action film. “We all raised our game, creatively. Rob and the rest of the team took it pretty seriously. We think we’re onto something here, and we don’t want to take it for granted,” Ritchie explained. “We try to give you a more sophisticated plot and more sophisticated action. All in all, we tried to basically put this film on ‘roids.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Robert Downey Jr. Talks Jon Favreau’s Departure From ‘Iron Man 3’

Downey says shooting the next ‘Iron Man’ installment without the director will be ‘weird.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Downey Jr. Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images After director Jon Favreau departed the “Iron Man” franchise but before Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) became the front-runner to helm the third installment of the superhero-movie series, MTV News sat down with Robert Downey Jr. and asked the actor how it would feel to play Tony Stark without Favreau behind the camera. “It is weird. I think there’s always a closure to everything,” he said, adding, “This will all come to an end one day, and I think the thing is to just really enjoy it while you have it.” No bad blood exists between the two men and, as Downey told us, he remains friendly with Favreau and is looking forward to his next directorial effort. “He’s up to great stuff with ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ coming up,” the actor said. “I just spoke with him a few weeks ago and we were quite friendly.” Before Downey begins “Iron Man 3,” which isn’t due in theaters until May 2013, he’ll be joining the highly anticipated superhero all-star flick, “The Avengers.” The picture will bring Downey’s metal-suited Stark together with the likes of Chris Evans’ Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. “The Avengers” will begin filming later this year, after Downey finishes work on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which he was shooting when we caught up with him in January. Ever the jokester, Downey said he won’t have to do much preparation to make “Avengers” a winner. “You grow a moustache and maybe do something with the hair. That’s how easy it is,” he laughed. “It’s going to be great, once I tell them what to do.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

‘Sherlock Holmes’ Sequel Shows Off Downey And Law’s ‘Brotherhood’

MTV News visited the ‘Game of Shadows’ set on its final day of production. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Downey Jr. on the set of “Sherlock Holmes” Photo: MTV News MTV News’ arrival on the U.K. set of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” marked a melancholy occasion. Not because things weren’t going well on the sequel to 2009’s $520 million-grossing hit, or because stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law weren’t happy to see us. But our January visit coincided with Law’s final day in production, and he and Downey felt like they were just getting warmed up. “We were talking so much about the possibilities of more, and loads of ideas and situations, on the first one,” said Law, who returns to the fold as sidekick Watson to Downey’s ass-kicking Holmes. “We’ve got even more ideas now, and I hope we’re going to be allowed to do another one again.” “We’re clinging on to this thing,” Downey laughed. “It’s going to have claw marks in it when we let go.” Warner Bros. hardly wants the duo to relinquish the new franchise anytime soon. While the characters are based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic 19th-century literary creations — ones that hardly had the contemporary appeal of a caped superhero — the success of the ’09 flick was anything but assured. Yet under the steady guidance of director Guy Ritchie and keying off the bromantic chemistry of its two male leads, “Sherlock Holmes” grossed $62 million over its opening weekend — even as it went head-to-head with “Avatar.” Now they’re back, and they’ve asked Noomi Rapace , the star of the Swedish-language “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” trilogy, to join up as a gypsy. Or as Ritchie put it to us, “A gypsy princess with balls — that’s what Noomi brings to the table.” The sequel focuses on a web of conspiracies overseen by nefarious Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). After Rapace’s gypsy meets up with Holmes and Watson in London, the story pushes out of the city and takes on a far greater scope than the first one. But ultimately, like that ’09 film, whether or not the sequel works will rest greatly on the sizzling back-and-forth between Downey and Law. From what we saw on the U.K. set, no one should be worried. “It feels a bit like a relay team,” Law said their dynamic. “He leads, then he hands the baton off to me, but it’s done subconsciously.” “I also think there are two kinds of performers,” added Downey. “I’ve heard of, and I guess I’ve experienced the kind that are like, ‘You want to play ping-pong? Because I’ll kick your ass!’ Everything is about, ‘I’ll do it better than you.’ Whereas, we become this third thing, this brotherhood.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
