Donna Summer Dead at 63

Donna Summer died this morning after a battle with cancer. She was 63. The singer was in Florida at the time of her death , according to reports. Known as the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer was said to be trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps. Just a few weeks ago, people close to her say she was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on. Summer was a five-time Grammy winner who rose to fame with hits – “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls” – that were synonymous with the 1970s. Donna and her producer Giorgio Moroder defined the dance music era of the ’70s, influencing acts like Duran Duran, David Bowie and many others. Summer married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano in 1980. The couple had two daughters together. R.I.P. to one of the greats. Donna Summer – Last Dance

We have lost another music legend Via TMZ reports : Donna Summer — the Queen of Disco — died this morning after a battle with cancer … TMZ has learned. We’re told Summer was in Florida at the time of her death. She was 63-years-old. Summer was a 5-time Grammy winner who shot to superstardom in the ’70s with iconic hits like “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls.” She continued her dominance in the ’80s with “She Works Hard for the Money” and “This Time I Know It’s for Real.” Summer and her producer Giorgio Moroder defined the dance music era of the ’70s and influenced acts like Duran Duran and David Bowie to enter the genre. Summer married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano back in 1980. They had two daughters together. Donna Summer defined a decade of music, her talent will surely be missed. We hope she’s doing the “Last Dance” in the big disco in the sky!

On the one hand, the guy who made The Elephant Man , Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive is entitled to some kind of lifetime exemption to direct whatever he wants whenever he wants — Duran Duran concert videos , Dior commercials , debt-ceiling riffs , pop albums , whatever . On the other hand, David Lynch may as well be the art-house Donald Trump at this point, pursuer of nominal glories bordering on the fetishistic at best and the gratuitously stupid at worst. Take this new coffee ad, for example — probably better than anything you’ll see on Super Bowl Sunday , but still an ad for a beverage branded by a master filmmaker turned hobbyist mythmaker. There’s nothing here you didn’t see 22 years ago in an episode of Twin Peaks ; there is no other new Lynch cinema in any legitimate stage of development. Or maybe that’s just how it feels! REVIEW: Amber Heard Brings Some Intrigue to Otherwise Uninspired The Ward

The Ward , John Carpenter’s first directorial effort in 10 years, is not an ideal hiatus-buster. The premise itself — a psych ward for young women is the site of a killing spree — is somewhat pre-Carpenter, and the toe-dip into torture porn feels a little desperate. But his budget-blond lead, B-movie mistress Amber Heard, is well-chosen, and the combination of an excellent supporting cast and a pliable theme work to offset the sizable debits incurred by the often rote direction and seriously iffy ending.

Talkback: Who Should Sing the Next James Bond Theme Song?

Composer David Arnold this week reaffirmed his interest in having Amy Winehouse contribute the vocals to the next James Bond theme song, which Arnold will assist in writing for Sam Mendes’s untitled 007 film set to shoot this fall. It’s a natural inclination considering the singer’s vintage ’60s style and tone (assuming you want to go vintage; there’s always the Duran Duran or Chris Cornell route, I guess), but then there’s that minor problem of Winehouse being unshakably strung out on booze and/or drugs. Plan B might be in order. That’s where you come in.

5 Duran Duran Videos That Already Look Like They Were Directed by David Lynch

On Monday it was announced David Lynch will direct Duran Duran’s live-streaming concert on March 23, which led to a collective, “Wait, what?” across the Internet. Lynch — known for cerebral movies like Blue Velvet and this-makes-no-sense-to-any-rational-human-being movies like Mulholland Drive — may not seem like the go-to point man for an ’80s new wave pop group like Duran Duran. Then again, you may have forgotten just how well orchestrated and bizarre some of Duran Duran’s videos actually are. (Remember, this is a band that got their name from the Jane Fonda movie, Barbarella .) In preparation for whatever Lynch’s version of a Duran Duran concert is going to look like (here’s hoping that it takes a series of 10 clues to interpret), let’s take a refresher course on five Duran Duran videos that already look like they were directed by David Lynch.
