Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’: Counting Down To The Trailer

First official look at highly anticipated flick starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz will air tonight. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio in “Django Unchained” Photo: The Weinstein Co. Quentin Tarantino ‘s next film, ” Django Unchained ,” has been considered one of the most anticipated films of the year since the director revealed the controversial log line. From the beginning, it sounded like quintessential Tarantino, and one star-studded round of casting later, it’s now a can’t-miss movie of 2012. The first trailer for “Django” is set to premiere at 7:30 p.m. ET tonight (June 6) on “Entertainment Tonight,” and if that doesn’t mean something to you, it really, really should. For those unfamiliar with the story, Django, played by Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx , is a newly freed slave who finds a mentor in German dentist/bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz ) and must save his still-enslaved wife from an evil plantation owner (soon-to-be Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio ). Though he’s flirted with the genre’s conventions before, “Django Unchained” will be Tarantino’s first full-on Western — but, this being a Tarantino movie, there’s a twist: The story largely takes place in the pre-Civil War South, creating a new genre all together, what Tarantino calls a “Southern.” Much of the look of the film, like “Inglourious Basterds” before it, borrows from the Westerns coming out of Italy during the 1960s and 1970s, the so-called “spaghetti Westerns.” “Entertainment Tonight” aired a preview to the trailer Tuesday night, and the footage did not disappoint. The preview showed Foxx as Django as he’s being freed from slavery by Schultz and a scene from later in the film, while the pair collects their first bounty. The same scene played for journalists at last month’s Cannes Film Festival, and it contains a line sure to become one of the most remembered from the film, so keep an eye out. (Just remember: “The ‘D’ is silent.”) The shootouts in “Django” — and oh, will there be shootouts! — are sure to have a highly stylized look to them and will likely be a centerpiece of the trailer. Based on the preview and reactions from Cannes, DiCaprio will be the one to watch, and he is on display in the short clip. After being unable to star as Hans Landa in “Basterds,” DiCaprio fought for the role of the evil Calvin Candie. The role is probably the most villainous of DiCaprio’s career, and he seems to be enjoying it quite a bit. Candie is a loud character that will provide DiCaprio with a ton of great lines like “Gentlemen, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.” But make no mistake about it. Candie is a bad man, so this will definitely be a different side of DiCaprio. Expect lots of gunplay and even more DiCaprio in this first preview since these will be the centerpieces of what may be one of the more bizarre releases of the year, but knowing Tarantino, it will also be one of the most exciting. Michael Bay To Direct ‘Transformers 4,’ Producer Confirms

The fourth film, which will be released in summer of 2014, will be ‘an evolution,’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Optimus Prime in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Since late last year, rumors began firing off about a potential “Transformers” sequel or sequels, and they ran the gamut. Paramount might film two sequels back to back. Michael Bay might return for both. Jason Statham may be the new star. Rumors came and went, but perhaps the biggest question lingered: Will Bay return to direct ? The master of the big-budget explosion, Bay’s highly stylized eye for action lent the trilogy its signature look and breakneck pace. With potential sequels looming, no word had been given on whether Bay would return for any follow-ups. But at Toy Fair 2012, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed to MTV News that Bay would, indeed, return for a fourth “Transformers” film. “Michael’s going to direct, and it’ll be in the summer of 2014. We’ll be releasing then,” di Bonaventura said. Di Bonaventura said that the director is eager to get back to the franchise he started. “He’s a cool customer. He’s excited,” he said. “I think the challenge there is that we are really going to do a reboot and what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet.” Bay will reportedly film the next “Transformers” after making “Pain and Gain,” which has Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg circling major roles. As for the Jason Statham rumors, di Bonaventura said that it is way too early in the process to decide something like casting. “No, it’s so silly. We have to get a story first,” he said. “You can’t pick characters if you don’t have a story.” With the series heading in the direction of a reboot, many new questions form about which characters and storylines will return. Di Bonaventura insisted that the fourth film will not be a hard reboot, but an “evolution.” “Again, it’s a hybrid because it’s a funny thing. I’m not involved with ‘Spider-Man,’ but what I perceive ‘Spider-Man’ to be is just a redoing of the whole thing. It’s not. It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, yet there will be a lot of new cast,” he said. “Whether there’s anybody from the first cast, we don’t even know yet. The trust is it’s going to be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along are Optimus and Bumblebee, I’m sure.” Are you excited for a “Transformers 4”? Leave your comment below! ‘Wrath Of The Titans’ Trailer: Five Key Elements

From Liam Neeson’s authoritative voice to Ralph Fiennes’ villain, we glimpse what’s in store for the ‘Clash of the Titans’ sequel. By Kara Warner Sam Worthington in “Wrath of the Titans” Photo: Warner Bros. The last time we caught up with Perseus ( Sam Worthington ), Zeus ( Liam Neeson ), Hades ( Ralph Fiennes ) and Co. in 2010’s “Clash of the Titans,” the gods were playing around with human lives, the Kraken was released and destroyed, and Perseus was asked to join the ranks on Mount Olympus. And although we’ve long known about the film’s sequel “Wrath of the Titans,” we haven’t had a clear look at what we’ll be getting into when it opens next March, until now. The “Wrath of the Titans” trailer is here and it is an action-packed extravaganza of sword slinging, monster-fighting excellence. Here are the five key elements we took away from the two-minute clip: When Liam Neeson Speaks, People Listen Oscar winner Liam Neeson is a perfect leader of things in film. He just has a natural gravitas and stature to make it work every time. Neeson as Zeus is a perfect example, and in the “Wrath” trailer, he uses that captivating narrator voice of his to tell the audience everything we need to know about the plot: “We Gods are losing our power. We believed the Titans to be imprisoned forever, now they’re breaking free.” His voice carries over shots of various Titans landing in various places and starting to wreak havoc. “It would mean chaos,” he says with feeling. “The end of the world.” Perseus vs. Everyone So how do we prevent the end of this world? With Perseus, of course, the demi-god descendent of Zeus himself, who saved the day in the first movie and will likely be doing the same in the second. Perseus is basically fighting various elements, monsters, gods and humans throughout the trailer, so when Zeus tells his son, “You will learn someday that being half human makes you stronger than a god,” we have to believe him because how else could he survive such beatings? Awesome CG Everything While fans of the 1981 original “Clash of the Titans” may remember the film most fondly for its camp factor and Claymation effects, there is no room for those in the reboots. Judging by the sleek and sophisticated design we see here in the trailer, i.e., the sonic boom blast following a god’s descent to earth, Hades in the Underworld, Cyclops, scary winged beasts, etc., “Wrath of the Titans” will be a feast for the eyes and fans of highly stylized CG. Andromeda Gets In On the Action? Everyone loves a beautiful femme fatale, one of Greek mythology’s favorite through lines, but we can all agree that it’s more fun when a female lead gets in on the action. Rosamund Pike has taken over the role of Andromeda in “Wrath,” and from the looks of things, wielding a sword, for instance, she might have more to do in this one than getting helplessly tied to a rock. Ralph Fiennes Should Only Play Villains How much do we love Ralph Fiennes as a villain? See his Oscar-nominated performance in “Schindler’s List” and his brilliance as He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named in the “Harry Potter” franchise. Fiennes makes his villains look as terrible as they are fun to play. His one line in this trailer is delivered with the perfect combination of calm, confidence and cool we’ve come to know and love: “You’re sweating like a human. Next, it will be tears.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Wrath of the Titans.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Girls’ Generation Dish On Hazards Of Making ‘The Boys’ Video

‘A pigeon comes out and that pigeon flies all over the place …,’ Korean girl group member Jessica explains. By Christina Garibaldi Girls’ Generation Photo: MTV News The phenomenon that is Girls’ Generation is making its mark in the United States. Last week, the Korean pop girl group released their latest music video, “The Boys,” and with 13 million YouTube views in just over a week, it’s clear that fans love it. On Monday, all nine Girls’ Generation members stopped by MTV News and told us that they are still in shock that so many fans have checked out their latest effort. “We have never expected many people to view our videos,” Sooyung said. “So we are surprised and would like to have more chances to meet our fans in other countries.” The Teddy Riley-produced song is the first single off their third studio album, The Boys, which was released worldwide on October 19, the same day their video was released. The sexy, upbeat video shows off the girls’ dance moves, highly stylized wardrobe and over-the-top set designs. “All the sets were supposed to portray water, sand, and roses … somewhat environmental,” Tiffany explained. “It turned out so well, so we were all very pleased.” In one of the scenes, the girls walk in slow motion through a rain shower of rose petals, but shooting that particular scene was not as glamorous as it looked. “It was really hard to keep our eyes open during the rose petal scenes because they would use the same rose petals over and over, so I don’t know how they got rid of the dust, but there was a lot of dust,” Tiffany said. Dust wasn’t the only thing Girls’ Generation had to watch out for on the shoot. The girls recruited a 10th member to join their group for the video, which unfortunately didn’t turn out as planned. “There was a pigeon. A pigeon comes out and that pigeon flies all over the place and guess what?” Jessica laughed while explaining the pigeon’s “accident.” “It actually happened on the collarbone of Sunny’s.” “Luckily she has short hair,” Tiffany added. “But it was funnier because Sunny didn’t know that it happened.” “I actually told her,” Jessica said. “I’m like, what is that?” And of course, with nine girls on the set of a music video, you can bet there were a whole lot of laughs. “There are scenes with all the lights off, like the silhouette scenes,” Tiffany said. “We were screaming and laughing while doing the scenes because you don’t see our faces.” Girls’ Generation’s first U.S. maxi-single will be released on November 19. What do you think of “The Boys” video? Let us know in the comments.

Johnny Depp Calls His ‘Dark Shadows’ Vampire ‘Classic’

‘These vampire movies have come out, and you go, ‘Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man,’ ‘ Depp tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Johnny Depp Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Anytime Johnny Depp and Tim Burton get together for a film, fans know to expect the unexpected, particularly with their retellings of familiar stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Alice in Wonderland” and their next highly anticipated project, the big-screen adaptation of ’60s vampire soap “Dark Shadows.” The fan fervor surrounding “Shadows” hit a high point recently when photos leaked of a heavily made-up Depp in his full Barnabas Collins costume , followed by the production’s first official photo of the entire cast posed family portrait-style and Burton in action on set . When MTV News caught up with Depp recently as he promoted “The Rum Diary,” which hits theaters October 28, we asked what inspired the highly stylized look of the character. “The memory that I have of watching the show as a kid, Jonathan Frid and what he did with that character was the main inspiration, for sure,” he said of the actor who originated the role of Barnabas. “But also the idea of, over the years, these vampire movies have come out and vampire TV shows and stuff like that, and you go, ‘Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man. What happened?’ “I adored Dracula, still do. I adored [everyone] from Bela Lugosi to Christopher Lee. I adore Nosferatu, [played by] Max Schrek. I adore all those wonderful sort-of horror films. And it was an opportunity really, an opportunity to sort of go into what really doesn’t exist [onscreen] so much anymore, which is classic monster makeup and a classic monster character,” Depp explained. “So that was really the inspiration Tim and I talked about.” Depp and Burton’s “Dark Shadows,” which also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Hayley and Eva Green, will be released May 11, 2012. ‘Source Code’ Requires A ‘Leap Of Faith,’ Director Says

Duncan Jones says if moviegoers can suspend disbelief, they’ll ‘go with it and enjoy the ride.’ By Kara Warner Michelle Monaghan and Jake Gyllenhaal in “Source Code” Photo: Summit Entertainment In most cases, when we travel to the theater or sit down to watch movies, we’re looking to be swept up by a great story, transported to other realms and just plain entertained. In doing so, however, there is an element of suspended disbelief that both filmmakers and audiences alike rely on in order to fully immerse themselves in a story. And while the upcoming thriller “Source Code” is based in present-day reality, there are several elements that draw on the sci-fi and fantastical genres and, as such, rely on the audience to suspend disbelief a bit. When MTV News caught up with director Duncan Jones recently, we asked him to explain his strategy for presenting audiences with challenging ideas without making them too convoluted or confusing. “Ben Ripley wrote the script, and I thought it was terrific,” Jones said. “I thought, ‘There are some heady ideas here,’ and I think he’s done a really good job of balancing what the audience needs to know and giving the audience enough rules that if you just invite them to take a leap of faith you’ll go with it and you can enjoy the ride.” Jones went on to say that the one element they added to Ripley’s story of traveling into people’s brains during the last eight minutes of their lives was humor. “I think one of the things we were able to do is lighten the tone, inject some humor into it so the audience is able to make that leap of faith and say, ‘I understand you, I trust these rules you’ve set up, let’s just see how the story goes.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Source Code.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . By Kara Warner, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: MTV News We’re just hours away from the premiere of Katy Perry’s highly anticipated “E.T.” video , featuring Kanye West, on MTV and MTV.com. From what we’ve seen so far — particularly with her complex makeup and costumes — this new clip is definitely Perry’s most over-the-top and highly stylized yet. MTV News correspondent Sway recently sat down with the “Teenage Dream” singer to chat about the extensive makeup process involved in the clip. “It was, like, five and six hours, each makeup look,” Perry said, admitting that it was a challenge for her to remain patient during the process. “It was hard for me! It was really a patience thing for me on this video,” she said. “But, you know, it’s like when you’re doing a film. Sometimes you have to do prosthetics, and you have to get really old or turn into an animal or a monster — and that’s kind of what this process was.” And after the five- to six-hour application process, how long did it take Perry to get out of her getup? “Like, 10 minutes,” she said, laughing. The “E.T.” video will premiere online today at noon on MTV.com, VH1.com and LogoTV.com. Then, “MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ ” will bow on air at 7:53 p.m. ET before tossing to an MTV.com live stream, featuring MTV News correspondent Sway’s exclusive chat with Perry, an interview with director Floria Sigismondi and reaction from Perry’s fans. Kate Bosworth Calls ‘Warrior’s Way’ ‘Hodgepodge’ Of Genres

‘You have cowboys and ninjas, and clowns and babies and Westerns,’ actress tells MTV News of new flick. By Kara Warner Kate Bosworth Photo: MTV News Those who’ve seen the trailers for “The Warrior’s Way” may be confused as to what genre the highly stylized actually fits into. Turns out there are so many things going on even the film’s stars are finding it difficult to categorize the ninja/Western-style flick. “I suppose I’ve been sort of describing it as outside the box,” Kate Bosworth told MTV News. “Even reading the screenplay was a really unique experience, and that is what really excited me about the film,” she said. “I’ve never read anything like it before, so the idea of an audience never seeing a film like that before is always an initial thrill going into making a movie.” Bosworth described the film, which opened on Friday (December 3), as a cross-culture, cross-genre extravaganza. “Visually, it’s just so beautiful,” the actress said. “You have cowboys and ninjas, and clowns and babies and Westerns, and it’s just a hodgepodge of excitement happening in this movie.” Speaking of excitement, Bosworth experienced plenty on set, particularly during her character’s fight sequences and the training required to execute them. “I would’ve liked to have had more time [training], to be totally honest with you, because this film sort of happened really quickly,” Bosworth explained. “It was sort of one of those things that you read and everyone came onboard and then you’re flying to New Zealand and training and trying to keep up, and then shooting. “I trained as much as possible, obviously, because I wanted to be prepared,” she added. “The sequences are so intricate. They’re more of a dance with the other actor than a fight, even. So it was almost like learning ballet, I think, more than martial arts.” “The Warrior’s Way” also stars Danny Huston and Korean superstar Jang Dong Gun.
