‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Three Things We Want To See

From Eva Green’s witch, Angelique, to what’s really up with Dr. Hoffman, here are the top things we’re itching to see. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp on the set of “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures We are just five months away from the release of the hottest vampire movie that doesn’t sparkle in the sunshine, and we’re starting to get excited. Very excited. But unlike the other major movies that have earned themselves a column here at MTV — “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga” — we are still waiting for a trailer for “Dark Shadows.” And, well, we’re starting to get pretty impatient. So far, director Tim Burton has kept a tight lid on his vampire soap opera — only a few official pics from the set (and one much-discussed paparazzi shot of Johnny Depp in character as Barnabas Collins) have been released. But the new year should bring fresh blood. We know filming has wrapped and that things apparently went so well on set that Michelle Pfeiffer told MTV News while promoting “New Year’s Eve” that working on “Dark Shadows” was “a dream job.” Pfeiffer, who plays family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, added that she hopes the film does well so “we can do a bunch of them, because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Whether that on-set camaraderie will translate into the campy big-screen spook-fest we’re hoping for remains to be seen, and while we hope the trailer doesn’t give too much away, here are a few things we’re hoping to see when it arrives. 1. Eva Green in action as Angelique Angelique Bouchard is the witch who turned Barnabas into a vampire in the late 1700s after their affair went sour. She’s a woman with an axe to grind and has been haunting and cursing the Collins family ever since. So far, the only image we’ve seen of Green in character is the full cast shot, in which she stands in the background wearing modern clothes. We hope the trailer gives us a taste of how the “Casino Royale” Bond girl is going to play the over-the-top villainess. This is a scenery-chewing role that any actress worth her salt would have a field day with. We have faith that the super sexy starlet will do it justice, but a little advance evidence would be nice. We want to see corsets, blood and maybe a voodoo doll or two. 2. A little insight into what Dr. Hoffman is up to For us, one of the biggest mysteries of the film is exactly what role Helena Bonham Carter’s Dr. Julia Hoffman will play in the shenanigans at Collinwood Mansion. The actress has described her character as “an alcoholic psychologist,” and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith told Entertainment Weekly that Hoffman “has been there for years, working with David [Collins] but not making any progress. He still claims he sees ghosts and talks with his dead mother.” Grahame-Smith goes on to describe the character as “a woman with a lot of secrets herself” who is “interested in Barnabas in more than one way.” What no one has mentioned is Hoffman’s role, in the original series, as a blood disorders specialist who attempts to cure Barnabas of his vampirism. We’ll be watching this trailer very closely to see if HBC is carrying more vials than she is notepads. 3. Collinwood Mansion We got a glimpse of the manor in the cast shot, with its Gothic windows and ancient-looking rugs, but we’re excited to see the rest of the haunted mansion. Overlooking the Atlantic from Collinsport, Maine, the house contains a room that is a gateway to a parallel time, for goodness’ sake. Given that so much of the action of the series takes place within the walls of the mansion, we’re really hoping that Burton and his first-class team of art directors, set designers and cinematographers got it right and captured the regal horror of the place. Kelly Clarkson Talks About Reuniting With ‘SNL’ ‘Family’

Saturday will be the pop singer’s third time as the show’s musical guest. By Jim Cantiello Kelly Clarkson Photo: MTV News This weekend, Kelly Clarkson is making her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live” as the musical guest. But the bubbly singer insists that being a part of NBC’s iconic show will never feel old hat. “I’m a three-peat! I’ve made it,” Clarkson exclaimed to MTV News when we caught up with her at rehearsals. “It’s a legendary stage! I’ve been watching it since I was a kid. I think we all have.” More so than the enormity of playing Studio 8H, Clarkson said she digs the vibe of the cast and crew. “It’s a fun environment. You don’t feel like you’re working … This is like a family place. Everybody here is nice to people who aren’t famous. You know what I’m saying? They’re nice to my makeup artist, my hair guy … I hate people who are just nice to famous people. It bothers me. I want to kick ’em,” she chuckled. Clarkson still thinks about her first appearance on “SNL” in 2005, when she became the first “American Idol” winner to snag a musical guest spot. Even cooler, she got to flex her comedic muscles in a couple of skits with former cast members Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz. “I remember I was so excited. First of all, Horatio? He’s hard to do skits with because you laugh ’cause he laughs all the time at [himself]. So you’re laughing ’cause he’s laughing, and I’m trying to keep a straight face. I had so much fun.” But this go-around, Clarkson’s too busy to participate in any sketches, even though the politically charged “SNL” could write comedy gold for Clarkson, who recently found herself in the middle of the presidential race when she casually tweeted about digging Ron Paul’s campaign . The singer’s always down to poke fun at herself and be goofy, but alas, tour rehearsals are top priority. “We’re literally flying in and out [of New York]. Charles Barkley’s hosting, so he’s doing all the skits.” Kelly fans can still look forward to two high-energy performances. During Saturday night’s show, Clarkson and her band will rock her #1 single, “Mr. Know It All,” as well as her latest hit, “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kelly Clarkson Related Artists Kelly Clarkson

Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State Of Mind’ To Replace ‘New York, New York’ At Belmont Stakes

NYRA official calls it ‘the quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City.’ By James Montgomery Jay-Z Photo: Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa In his massive hit “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z raps that he’s “the new Sinatra.” And it turns out he wasn’t joking. During Saturday’s 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes, “Empire” will be played as the horses are brought out onto the race track, replacing Sinatra’s classic “New York, New York,” according to a spokesperson for the New York Racing Association. “[It’s] the quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City,” an NYRA official told The Associated Press. A spokesperson for the NYRA confirmed the change to MTV News. “New York, New York,” (or, as it’s actually called, “Theme From ‘New York, New York,’ “) is most closely associated with Sinatra, though it was actually written for — and first recorded by — Liza Minnelli for the 1977 Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Sinatra recorded it for his 1980 album Trilogy: Past, Present And Future, and it became the last of his many signature numbers. Sinatra’s version has been performed as the field for the Belmont Stakes makes its way to the starting gate since 1997. Before that, the vaudeville tune “Sidewalks of New York” was performed. At Saturday’s race — which is held at Belmont Park on Long Island — teen singer Jasmine Villegas will perform “Empire.” Of course, this isn’t the first time the song has been performed at a sporting event. “Empire” became the unofficial theme song of the New York Yankees’ World Series run last year, with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys doing a version of the tune during Game Two of the Series. Later, Jigga did another take of the song during the Yankees’ championship celebration in Manhattan. Related Artists Jay-Z

Katy Perry Gets Slimed At Kids’ Choice Awards

‘Why does it taste like boogers?’ singer jokes onstage. By Amy Wilkinson Katy Perry backstage at the Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday Photo: Chris Polk/KCA2010/Getty Images During Saturday’s (March 27) 23rd Annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, singer Katy Perry joined an elite and very exclusive group whose members include Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford and Sandra Bullock. In other words, she was slimed. Clad in a skintight yellow dress and a bright blue wig, Perry took the KCA stage along with actor Jonah Hill to present the award for Favorite Movie Actress. As Perry opened the box to reveal the winner’s name, she was met instead by a forceful green geyser of slime, which sent her flying to the floor and coated her face, outfit and fake hair. “I can’t see anything,” she exclaimed after emerging from a puddle of the slimy goo and hugging Hill. “Why does it taste like boogers?” “You look great,” Hill reassured her. When winner Miley Cyrus’ name was finally announced for the acting award, Perry made a move to hug the winner as she reached for her orange blimp. “Don’t you dare,” Cyrus warned. After dodging the singer stealthily, Cyrus joked, “Luckily, we both wear wigs, so it’s OK.” Prior to Saturday’s ceremony, Perry Tweeted, “Hope I don’t get none of that disgusting booger slime on me @Kids Choice Awards 2night … I’ll slap the ho that ruins my weave, nails, face!” Following her messy presentation, Perry simply Tweeted, “Crap.” Perry was one of several celebs, including “Twilight” actor Jackson Rathbone, to be slimed during the evening’s show. This was not the first time Perry got a little dirty on an awards-show stage. During 2008’s Los Premios, the “I Kissed a Girl” singer belly-flopped into a giant birthday cake , slipping on the icing and falling to the ground.
