Barry’s Back: Barack Obama Slams President Trump, GOP In Epic Speech

Source: Scott Olson / Getty Barack Obama can no longer hold the highest office in the land, but he still has the ability to inspire the nation as evidenced by a rousing speech he gave earlier Friday. While at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, the former commander-in-chief slammed President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the most eloquent way possible. Politico reports : Laying out a brief history of America — starting with George Washington’s decision to step out of public life after leaving the presidency — Obama framed the 2018 elections as more significant than ever before. And for the first time since leaving office, he said Trump’s name. Obama unfurled a paragraph-by-paragraph condemnation of Trump, his presidency and what he has uncorked in American politics. “It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause,” Obama said to applause. “He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.” It’s not just about Trump, Obama said. It’s about Republicans “who know better in Congress … bending over backwards to shield” Trump. They’re hypocrites, he said, and they’re just as dangerous to America. At times mocking them and at times laying into them, Obama said they’ve abandoned all that they’re supposed to stand for as Republicans, and as citizens of this country. How Eli Roth Recruited Amazonian Villagers For ‘Green Inferno’ With ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ & Boats

Eli Roth is going off the grid. For the cannibal pic The Green Inferno , Roth tells Movieline he’s taking a small crew to a remote village up the Amazon River that has “no electricity, no running water, nothing.” Producers recruited many of the 200 native villagers to play extras in the horror film by screening the cult film Cannibal Holocaust . It was the first movie they’d seen in their lives, Roth remarked. “They thought it was a comedy!” Roth was newly arrived from a South American prepping trip for the film when he spoke with Movieline Wednesday in Los Angeles about his work producing RZA’s The Man With The Iron Fists . The Green Inferno marks his first feature since Hostel: Part II , but then Roth’s been busy with a number of projects in the past few years, from acting in and directing a short for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds , producing films for folks like RZA, Ti West ( The Sacrament ), and Nicolás López ( Aftershock , which Roth also starred in), and directing an episode of Hemlock Grove for Netflix, among other projects. (As if there wasn’t enough stacked on his plate, he also recently opened his Goretorium attraction in Las Vegas.) For The Green Inferno , the tale of ” naive do-gooders ” who run into cannibals when their plane crashes in the jungle (co-written by Roth with Aftershock scribe Guillermo Amoedo), Roth is taking a page out of the Werner Herzog playbook by venturing deep into the Amazon for what he excitedly refers to as “as adventure.” “The location that we found is truly spectacular,” he said. “It’s so far up the Amazon, no one has ever shot there. The last person anywhere near there was Werner Herzog for Aguirre, the Wrath of God .” The village is so remote, in fact, that Roth says locals had never seen a film before. “We said, ‘Can we shoot here?’ and talked to them, and our producers said ‘We have to explain to them what a movie is. They’ve never seen a television,'” Roth recalled. “So we brought a generator and set up a television. I thought they were going to show them E.T. or The Wizard of Oz , but they showed them Cannibal Holocaust to see how much they could handle.” 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust saw director Ruggero Deodato brought up on obscenity and murder charges when authorities at the time believed the graphic human violence depicted onscreen was real. How did Roth’s new acquaintances react? “The villagers thought it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen.” Roth found that his new cast members’ unfamiliarity with film technology was an unpredictable benefit. “Because none of them have ever owned a camera or had any photographs of themselves and no conception of what television or movies are, they’re so natural and relaxed. They’re amazing. They’re not even conscious of what [the camera] is doing to them. I have a whole village full of kids that are funny as hell that will have cameras all over and not even think twice about it. They don’t get nervous, nothing.” Deodato himself drew criticism for depicting actual animal deaths onscreen, but another controversial film of the era shot on location with locals, the Italian slavery pic Goodbye Uncle Tom ( a reference point for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained ), came under fire for hypocritically exploiting the Haitian actors in its cast. Perhaps a stretch, but I asked Roth about the ethics of tapping an entire village to play natives, using the Goodbye Uncle Tom lesson as exploitation cinema’s most notorious example. ” Goodbye Uncle Tom is a pretty brutal movie about slavery where you show corks being pulled out of guys’ asses and babies being hosed down,” he answered, giving it some thought. “No, because we’re giving these people a boat,” Roth explained. “They have no contact with the outside world and we’re giving them a motorboat — that’s the deal. And we’re giving them medical supplies and school supplies, so they’re ecstatic. The one thing they need is a boat. They were like, ‘This will literally change our lives.'” Roth begins filming The Green Inferno in two weeks. Stay tuned for our full interview for The Man With The Iron Fists , out November 2. Donald Trump on Kate Middleton Topless Pics: All Her Fault, Totally Fair Game!

The shocking release of Kate Middleton topless photos, taken from a distance while she was at a private villa in France, has sparked debate over the ethics of celebrity media coverage. Most people tend to sympathize with the Duchess of Cambridge here. Donald Trump, however, is not most people. In a series of Tweets, the blowhard opined that Middleton herself is to blame for the nude photos – she didn’t have to strip down outdoors, after all! “Kate Middleton is great, but shouldn’t be sunbathing in the nude, she has only herself to blame,” writes Trump. “Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on Kate!” Somehow we’re guessing the British royal family disagrees. The irate royals are exploring legal options to stop the spread of the Kate Middleton pics , and have already won an injunction against French gossip magazine Closer . However, at least two other tabloids have run the pics – both in other nations not bound by the ruling – and that’s just print media. The Internet is a different beast. What do you think of Trump’s statement? Is he for real? We know he likes to weigh in on whatever’s trending, but does he have a valid point? Comment/vote below … Is Kate Middleton to blame for the scandal?

Zoe Kravitz In ASOS: On Best Friend Jay-Z & Uncomfortable “It Girl” Title [PHOTOS]

Here is the original post:

Zoe Kravitz covers ASOS magazine’s July 2011 issue. Inside, she talks the “it girl” label that follows her everywhere, struggling to be best friends with Jay-Z, her parents’ style and discipline, and her latest films! She may be New York rock royalty, but the actress is flea market-loving geek at heart. On being labeled an “it-girl”: “All that ‘it-girl’ sh*t makes me kind of uncomfortable. I’m only at the beginning of my career, but I feel successful in that I haven’t sold out in any way, shape or form. I feel good about the choices I’ve made, and I don’t feel like I’ve let go of any of my values. Fame has become this obsession for people, which kind of creeps me out.” On Jay-Z: “I’d met Jay a few times, and then he asked me to be in his video for ‘I Know.’ After that we became really good friends and now he’s one of my favorite people. It sounds so weird when you say it because he’s f***ing Jay-Z! But what’s so weird is that he’s such a cool guy that sometimes I wish he wasn’t Jay-Z so we could hang out all day long and walk around and talk sh*t because I love him.” On being inspired by her mom, Lisa Bonet: “She walked away from being famous, because she didn’t really care about it. She is the most true artist I have met. She doesn’t change for anybody. I see her in front of people, in interviews, at home alone at five in the morning making collages, or in her garden, and I admire her so much. And that fact that she’s my mom is just so cool!” On her parent’s style: “I used to be a little embarrassed by how she and my dad would dress, but now I steal their clothes all the time. My dad had totally taken my Cat Stevens t-shirt, but it’s OK, I have his Black Flag one and that’s amazing. And my mom…There’s a little vintage store where she lives…She [donated] a bunch of [her] stuff while I was away and I went there when I got back and bought five of her things. Out of everything in the store, I’d bought my mother’s things.” On her parents’ discipline: “My dad was brought up very old school, very strict – ‘Yes, ma’am, yes sir.’ So he’s wearing leather pants and a boa, but he would be like, ‘Did you do your chores today?’ Or, ‘That dress is too short!’ [Or,] ‘Yes, there’s a party going on with Mick Jagger and some models, but it’s your bedtime.’” READ MORE BELOW THE GALLERY! On her breakthrough role in the Berlin Film Festival favorite “Yelling to The Sky”: “That was a really crazy, amazing experience. It was my first leading role, so it was a real challenge for me as an actor. It was very low budget, we shot it in 18 days, and it was not luxurious, but it was art. The heart and soul that went into making that film was wonderful and I’m proud to be a part of it.” On filming “X-Men: First Class”: “I feel like sometimes if you do a film with ‘movie stars’ there’s all this drama and superiority, but X-Men was not like that at all. We were living in London for four months and it was like X-Men summer camp, so we all hung out at each other’s houses after filming, went out to pubs… lived in Notting Hill, right by Portobello. I had about a month off when I first arrived in London, and I was like, “Can you send me to work please, because I’m spending all my money flea-market shopping!” On her band Elevator Fight : “Having a band is great, because with acting there are long periods of time out when you’re not doing anything, and I don’t like just sitting around, I go crazy. We found this house in the suburbs of Pennsylvania and did [the album] in eight days. Drank a lot of whisky and ate a lot of pizza and stayed up ’til 7am every day. We smelt so bad by the end, but I’m very happy with it. I don’t know what’s going to happen next, we don’t have a record deal, but we’re playing it by ear.” Zoe Kravitz Smokes A Cig, Shows Off Abs For Wonderland Mag [PHOTOS] Zoe Kravitz Debuts Two-Tone Hair At Tribeca Film Festival [PHOTOS]

New Poll: Extramarital Affairs Considered The Most Immoral

Visit link:

A national poll shows that while Americans are still holding on to some traditional moral values, it has validated immoral behaviors that are self-satisfying. The poll, conducted by Gallup, revealed 91 percent of respondents considered extramarital affairs immoral. In addition to cheating spouses, polygamy, cloning humans, suicide and pornography all ranked as the top five immoral “sins” among Americans. A majority of respondents also ranked abortion as an immoral behavior. However, more respondents found cloning animals immoral (62 percent) than doctor assisted suicide (48 percent). A narrow 45 percent of Americans believe assisted suicide is morally acceptable. Cloning of animals also outweighed the moral importance of embryonic stem cell research (only 30 percent found it immoral), fornication (36 percent), gambling (31 percent) and divorce (23 percent). The poll shows what Richard Land, president of Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, says is a deep-rooted problem with Americans’ sense of priorities. Land says Americans’ moral values are skewed to focus less on their obligations and responsibilities and more on their “supposed rights and privileges.” You may read the rest here

Should we expose Christine O’Donnel?

From our friends at Brave New Films: Christine O'Donnell, the Tea-Party backed candidate for Senate from Delaware, has recently been making headlines for her crazy comments, but it is more than these quotes that are raising eyebrows. There is disturbing evidence that O'Donnell has been living off of her campaign funds and has submitted false reports to the Federal Elections Commission. These practices are ILLEGAL and must be investigated by a criminal inquiry. This is why we are joining our friends at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) in calling on Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss to open a criminal investigation into Christine O'Donnell's improper use of campaign funds. We need YOU to stand with us! Send a letter to U.S. Attorney David Weiss calling for him to open a criminal investigation into O'Donnell's questionable practices. We must stand united in supporting leaders who abide by the law, not break it. added by: BRAVATRAVELS

CBS Dishonestly Touts ‘Non-Partisan Watchdog’ Group’s Quest for a ‘Criminal Investigation’ of Christine O’Donnell

“There are calls for a criminal investigation of another rising GOP star,” Katie Couric teased at the top of the CBS Evening News, after citing Sarah Palin’s speaking appearance in Iowa, as she elevated a publicity gimmick from a left-wing organization staffed by veterans of Democratic congressional offices. Though O’Donnell “took the spotlight today at a conservative summit in Washington,” Couric warned: “There may be trouble ahead for her. A watchdog group intends to call Monday for a criminal investigation of what it says is her chronic abuse of campaign funds.” Reporter Nancy Cordes painted O’Donnell as a hypocrite, charging that “even as she preached a return to fiscal conservatism, O’Donnell’s own unorthodox spending habits were starting to come under heavy scrutiny,” asserting “the unemployed O’Donnell used campaign funds to pay for meals, gas, bowling trips, and personal rent, even long after the campaign had ended.” CBS then gave a platform to veteran Democratic activist Melanie Sloan, who is now advancing her liberal agenda as Executive Director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). She alleged O’Donnell “just stole” campaign donations. Cordes legitimized CREW by misleadingly describing the obviously liberal outfit as “the non-partisan watchdog group” which “is urging the U.S. attorney in Delaware to open a criminal investigation.” Sloan got a second soundbite to declare: “It’s not sloppiness, it’s out-and-out theft.” (On Wednesday night, without attribution for the ideological label, Cordes cited “O’Donnell’s ultra-conservative social views.”)   Just how much of a “non-partisan watchdog” is CREW? “ CREW’s Crooked Candidates 2010 ” list, one of whom is O’Donnell, now features nine Republicans and just three Democrats, which suggests they are cover for the group’s real agenda. Looking at its own “ CREW crew ” page of brief staff bios, I saw no one with any past work for a conservative cause or Republican politician, but a bunch with records of working for liberal and Democratic officials, starting with Sloan: Ms. Sloan served as Minority Counsel for the House Judiciary Committee, working on criminal justice issues for then-Ranking Member John Conyers (D-MI). Ms. Sloan also served as Counsel for the Crime Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by then-Representative Charles Schumer (D-NY). There, she drafted portions of the 1994 Crime Bill, including the Violence Against Women Act. In 1993, Ms. Sloan served as Nominations Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, under then-Chairman Joseph Biden (D-DE). Other staffers toiled previously for Democratic Senators Tom Harkin, Jeff Merkley, Daniel Inouye, Barbara Boxer and the late Paul Wellstone and Fritz Hollings. Another served in the office of Maryland Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen. Plus, one “performed strategic campaign research with the Service Employees International Union.” The “contact” name on CREW’s page proclaiming “ Tell the U.S. Attorney: Investigate Christine O’Donnell! ” is Garrett Russo. From the bio for Russo, CREW’s Communications Director: “Prior to joining CREW, Mr. Russo ran the National Press Desk for former Vice President Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection.” That page links to a petition page that features a video clip from Thursday’s Anderson Cooper 360: “CNN is already looking into the matter. Click here, or watch the YouTube clip below, to see their report.” ( larger jpg image of that Web page showcasing CNN’s story.) The story on the Friday, September 17 CBS Evening News, transcript provided by the MRC’s Brad Wilmouth: KATIE COURIC: Now to the Tea Party’s newest star, Christine O’Donnell, who scored an upset to take the GOP Senate nomination in Delaware this week. She took the spotlight today at a conservative summit in Washington, but there may be trouble ahead for her. A watchdog group intends to call Monday for a criminal investigation of what it says is her chronic abuse of campaign funds. Here’s congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes. NANCY CORDES: Christine O’Donnell, initially shunned by the Republican establishment, was embraced by it today, granted a plum speaking role at the annual Values Voters Summit in Washington, D.C., alongside the likes of Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. CHRISTINE O’DONNELL, DELAWARE REPUBLICAN SENATE NOMINEE: The small elite don’t get us. They call us wacky. They call us wing nuts. We call us, “We, the people.” CORDES: Delaware’s new Republican Senate nominee was at home in this crowd of social conservatives. But even as she preached a return to fiscal conservatism, O’Donnell’s own unorthodox spending habits were starting to come under heavy scrutiny. Staffers on her previous campaign for Senate and O’Donnell’s own financial filings reveal that the unemployed O’Donnell used campaign funds to pay for meals, gas, bowling trips, and personal rent, even long after the campaign had ended. MELANIE SLOAN, CITIZENS FOR RESPONSIBILITY AND ETHICS IN WASHINGTON: Well, I’ve never seen a candidate who just stole all their campaign money and used it for personal use. What it seems like here is Christine O’Donnell had no other way to support herself so she thought, okay, I’ll run for U.S. Senate. CORDES: The non-partisan watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, is urging the U.S. attorney in Delaware to open a criminal investigation. SLOAN: It’s not sloppiness, it’s out-and-out theft. CORDES: But today O’Donnell waved off her critics. O’DONNELL: Will they attack us? Yes. Will they smear our backgrounds and distort our records? Undoubtedly. CORDES: Republican Senate campaign leaders scheduled their first face-to-face meeting with O’Donnell today, but she canceled, saying she was just too tired after her whirlwind week.
