Sub-19 and Sub-5: Big Three Nets’ Drew Under 19 Million Last Week; CBS, at Under 5 Mil, Ties All-Time Low

They’ll have all sorts of excuses (but only if asked) about why it happened: It’s because they had a lot of guest anchors last week, it was hot, summer vacation season is still on (though lots of kids around in Greater Cincinnati were already back in school by last Wednesday), cable is killing us, blah-blah, etc., etc. But the Big Three networks won’t be able to avoid the fact that their ongoing decline reached a painful low last week of 18.82 million average viewers. Here is the graphic that appeared this morning at ABC’s lipstick-on-a-pig blog post : I don’t know whether that’s an all-time low, but Kevin Allocca at Media Bistro, who hadn’t posted the full numbers as of the time of this post, has noted that one of those networks indeed scraped bottom last week: ‘CBS Evening News’ Ties All-Time Low The network newscast ratings for last week are in and “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric” tied its all-time low in total viewers with an average of 4.89 million tuning in during the five days. The low was set last June, when ABC also hit its own low. (Ratings records date back to the 1991-’92 season.) It’s not unreasonable to believe that the Perky Ms. Couric’s pathetic performance might have more than a little to do with her compulsion to lecture us . Here is how the overall numbers compare to those from one and two years ago: Week of August 18, 2008 — 21.44 million Week of August 17, 2009 — 19.76 million Week of August 16, 2010 — 18.82 million This past week was down 4.8% from a year ago, and almost 14% from two years ago. NBC’s audience, which was a whisker shy of 9 million two years ago, has fallen 17.5%. Gee, do you think that might have something to do with Brian Williams’s open contempt for the Tea Party Movement? Though the comparison isn’t apples to apples because the 2010 numbers are for a summertime week, the nets’ average audience during calendar 2005 was about 27 million . There’s little doubt their 5-year decline is in the neighborhood of 20, and possibly much more. The U.S. population grew by about 4% during that five-year period. As Instapundit’s Glenn Reynolds might say, though usually in a more positive vein: ” Faster, please .” Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

Sean Hannity Wishes NewsBusters a Happy 5th Anniversary

Sean Hannity on his radio program Wednesday wished NewsBusters a Happy 5th Anniversary. As he talked to a caller about his Freedom Alliance, he thanked NewsBusters for helping to debunk smears against him and his charitable organization. Moments later, he expressed his gratitude for NewsBusters’ efforts in “challenging the mainstream Obama-mania media” (audio embedded below the fold): SEAN HANNITY: By the way, thanks to NewsBusters and Erick Erickson at RedState, my buddy. I mean, they’ve gone there. As liberals, they even attack fundraising for the military with distortion and lies. And they went out there and said, “Excuse me, you’re forgetting there’s $15 million in this trust fund. Sorry.” You know, then they try to purposely distort the numbers. By the way, it’s the fifth anniversary of NewsBusters, and we want to say Happy Anniversary to them. Thank God there are people out there challenging the mainstream Obama-mania media. NewsBusters thanks Sean as well as his executive producer James Grisham and engineer Greg Ahlfeld for their well wishes.

Dan Rather Has Cameo in Forthcoming Alien Invasion Flick ‘Skyline’

It may well be Dan Rather’s finest hour. Make that his finest five seconds. The disgraced former “Evening News” anchor apparently has a brief cameo in “Skyline,” an alien invasion flick landing in theaters on November 12.  Rather isn’t the only liberal journalist featured in the film. Self-described socialist and sometime “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” guest host Lawrence O’Donnell is also featured in the movie trailer, which we’ve included below the page break (h/t Jim Geraghty ):

CBS’s Attkisson Finally Exposes Fannie Mae’s Dirty Laundry

Some investigative reporters still live up to their job descriptions. On the July 20 edition of “CBS Evening News,” reporter Sharyl Attkisson exposed how government-sponsored entity (GSE) Fannie Mae and mortgage lender Countrywide “scratched each other’s backs” while their toxic loans fueled America’s mortgage crisis. Attkisson revealed new documents showing that Countrywide gave “very important person” loans to dozens of Fannie Mae executives while American taxpayers forked over $84 billion to bail out the GSE. Among the VIP loan recipients were Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson, who received $10 million, former Vice Chair Jamie Gorelick and former CEO Franklin Raines, whose total amounts received remain unknown. Attkisson reported the loans, but did not mention Raines, Gorelick, and Johnson all have ties to Democrats , from Bill Clinton to John Kerry to President Obama. Attkisson showed 42 Fannie Mae officials took 153 VIP loans from Countrywide. Additionally, Attkisson revealed an e-mail from Countrywide to Fannie Mae’s then Chief Operating Officer Dan Mudd attempting to cover their tracks: “Make sure the branch, and RVP, understand the sensitivity of this deal,” the first part of the e-mail read. “We already are taking a loss, it would be horrible to add a service complaint on top and lose any benefit we generate.” Attkisson concluded her report with an interview with U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and stated that Issa would like a congressional probe of Mudd and other Fannie Mae CEOs to see if they violated any ethical codes. However, CBS News anchor Katie Couric didn’t allow Attkisson to elaborate and swiftly moved on the next story. Attkisson broke the seemingly unwritten media code of not covering the Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac debacles . Ironically, her story was aired on the evening before President Obama was scheduled to sign the massive financial reform bill that fails to include any GSE reform .

Oh, No! On Independence Day, CBS Frets Congress Becoming ‘Paralyzed’ Over ‘Fear of the Deficit’

West coast viewers got to see a July 4 CBS Evening News on Sunday, and those who tuned in saw CBS’s interim “report card” on Congress’s performance so far. Under the headline of “unfinished business,” correspondent Wyatt Andrews and his sole expert, Politico’s Jonathan Allen, both fretted how Congress is now “paralyzed” due to a “growing fear of the deficit.” Many Americans are probably wishing Congress had become “paralyzed” a few trillion dollars ago. Andrews rued that supposedly job-creating “stimulus spending” may be sacrificed if enough congressmen feel deficit spending is now “political Kryptonite.” Many members of Congress especially those in tough re-election campaigns are home right now, trying to figure out the spending issue: Will voters support more stimulus spending if it directly leads to jobs, or has deficit spending itself become political Kryptonite? CBS’s main example of congressional indecision, however, was an urgently-needed Afghanistan war funding bill that the Senate has nearly doubled with additional spending, pushing it from $33 to $60 billion, and that has ballooned in the House to $80 billion. That doesn’t sound like a Congress that is becoming cowed by the need to throttle back spending. Here’s the transcript of the piece from the July 4 Evening News; you can watch video at CBSNews.com: ANCHOR RUSS MITCHELL: Congress has had some notable successes this year in health care and education reform along others. But members have a lot of catching up to do when they return from their holiday recess in a week and a half. Wyatt Andrews has more. CORRESPONDENT WYATT ANDREWS: As members of Congress streamed from the Capitol Thursday night, they were leaving for a ten-day break, but escaping a long list of unfinished business. Despite repeated demands for final action- REPRESENTATIVE JOHN LEWIS: Do not be afraid to vote with your heart, and your conscience. ANDREWS: -action was hard to find. The extension of unemployment benefits, funding for the war in Afghanistan, funding for 100,000 teachers, Wall Street reform, and campaign finance reform were all either stuck, or stalled, or rejected and presumed dead. [to Jonathan Allen] How much of that did they get done? The POLITICO’s JONATHAN ALLEN: They got absolutely none of it done before the July 4th break. ANDREWS: Zero? ALLEN: Zero. WYATT ANDREWS: Jonathan Allen of Politico, who’s covered the Hill for eleven years, calls Congress unusually paralyzed this time because of a growing fear of the deficit. ALLEN: You see that paralysis in Congress where there are these sort of conflicting impulses of, ‘We’ve got to do something to help,’ but ‘We can`t do that because it cost too much money.’ ANDREWS: The latest example is funding for Afghanistan. The administration asked for $33 billion, but the Senate bill totaled $60 billion by tacking on spending for veterans — and the House bill, by adding extra money for teachers, totaled $80 billion. Because the two bills are different and bitterly contested, money the Defense Department said it needed to fight the war now is on hold. SECRETARY OF DEFENSE ROBERT GATES: We begin to have to do stupid things if the supplemental isn’t passed by the Fourth of July recess. WYATT ANDREWS: Many members of Congress especially those in tough re-election campaigns are home right now, trying to figure out the spending issue: Will voters support more stimulus spending if it directly leads to jobs, or has deficit spending itself become political kryptonite? Wyatt Andrews, CBS News, Capitol Hill.

‘Harry Potter’ Actress’ Father And Brother Threaten To Kill Her

The father and brother of Afshan Azad are accused of threatening to kill the star because of her relationship with a Hindu man. By Mawuse Ziegbe Afshan Azad Photo: Getty Images The father and brother of actress Afshan Azad, who plays Padma Patil in the “Harry Potter” franchise, have been accused of threatening to kill the star. Her brother has also been accused of assaulting her at her home in Manchester, England. According to CNN , a spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said the actress was allegedly attacked on May 21 because her family disapproved of her relationship with a Hindu man. Azad’s family is Muslim. Azad’s father, Abdul Azad, and brother, Ashraf Azad, recently appeared in Manchester Magistrate’s Court via video link, according to the Manchester Evening News . The actress was also present at the hearing and the two men have been released on bail. Bail conditions stipulate that neither father nor brother can travel to London and must adhere to a curfew. The paper also reports that the pair will appear again in court later this month and that “it is understood” that Azad’s father and brother plan to plead not guilty. Azad was a student with no acting experience when she was cast as Padma Patil, a classmate of Harry’s. Azad reportedly tagged along to an audition with some friends “for a bit fun.” She has since appeared in four movies, and the Manchester Evening News reports that she is expected to appear in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which is set to hit theaters next year. John Wolfson, a lawyer for Azad’s brother Ashraf, said, “I hope for the whole family’s sake this matter can be resolved quickly and happily.”

CBS’s Chip Reid Rails Against Failure to Extend Unemployment Benefits: ‘Senate Republicans Are to Blame’

CBS’s Chip Reid on Thursday railed against the Senate for failing to extend unemployment benefits. The Evening News reporter opined, ” So who’s fault is that? On the surface, it appears Senate Republicans are to blame. Led by Mitch McConnell, they killed the bill with a filibuster .” At no point did Reid or fill-in anchor Scott Pelley discuss whether unemployment benefits should be extended yet again. The only culpability Democrats earned was for the lone member who sided with the Republicans. Reid chided, “Democrats also have themselves to blame. One Democrat, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, voted no. If he had voted with his party, the bill would have passed.” Pelley began the program by indignantly announcing, “We have decided to start with the 1.3 million Americans whose unemployment benefits have run out, stopped cold, in the last 30 days. And we’re starting there because the U.S. Senate went on vacation today without solving the problem.” Later, Pelley tried class warfare as he implied that the politicians who failed to pass the legislation were selfish: “You know, it may be worth noting that the vacationing senators make about $174,000 a year and enjoy lifetime health and pension benefits.” On Friday’s Early Show, reporter Rebecca Jarvis sounded a similar theme: “In Washington, for the third week in a row, Congress refused to extend jobless benefits for more than a million long-term unemployed, those out of work for more than six months. Then, lawmakers recessed for the holiday weekend. ” A transcript of the July 1 Evening News segment follows: SCOTT PELLEY: We have decided to start with the 1.3 million Americans whose unemployment benefits have run out, stopped cold, in the last 30 days. And we’re starting there because the U.S. Senate went on vacation today without solving the problem. … PELLEY: And as long as Congress fails to extend those benefits, another 375,000 unemployed Americans every week will see their unemployment checks stop. Our chief White House correspondent Chip Reid has been working both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue to figure out what happened. Chip. CHIP REID: Well, Scott, the House passed a bill to extend unemployment benefits, but the Senate, believe it or not, failed by a single vote, then went home for a long Fourth of July recess. REP. JOHN LEWIS (D-GA): Tell them as they swallow their pride that you don’t care! That you don’t have a heart! REID: The debate in the House was emotionally charged. REP. DAVE CAMP (R-MI): Democrats should put an end to this sham and pay for this $34 billion spending bill. REID: In the end, the unemployment extension passed 270 to 153, but it was a futile effort because the Senate, for the third time in three weeks, failed to pass the bill last night and will not take it up again until after the Fourth of July recess. That means Americans who have lost their benefits will have to wait at least another ten days. So who’s fault is that? On the surface, it appears Senate Republicans are to blame. Led by Mitch McConnell, they killed the bill with a filibuster. But McConnell points the finger at Democrats, especially Leader Harry Reid, for refusing to pay for the bill in this age of sky-high deficits. SEN. MITCH MCCONNELL (Minority Leader): The only reason the unemployment extension hasn’t passed is because our friends on the other side simply refuse to pass a bill that does not add to the debt. REID: Reid calls that a weak excuse. SEN. HARRY REID (Majority Leader): Democrats and Republicans have always extended unemployment benefits because it’s an emergency. REID: Democrats also have themselves to blame. One Democrat, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, voted no. If he had voted with his party, the bill would have passed. Now, when the Senate returns in about ten days from its Fourth of July recess, the expectation is that there will be a replacement for Robert Byrd who passed away this week. That should give the Democrats the votes they need to pass the unemployment bill. Scott. PELLEY: Thanks, Chip. You know, it may be worth noting that the vacationing senators make about $174,000 a year and enjoy lifetime health and pension benefits.

Saving Us from Ourselves: ‘Evening News’ Justifies Federal Tanning Tax

So you want to crawl under a high-powered lamp and bake your skin so that it has a brownish-orangish glow to it, even though there are potential health consequences. Well, the federal government is here to save you and, according to “CBS Evening News,” that’s not a bad thing. The new federal 10 percent tax on indoor tanning has provoked odd alliances – such as when Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told “Snooki” from MTV’s “Jersey Shore”   through Twitter   he would “never tax your tanning bed.” But on the June 30 broadcast of “Evening News,” CBS correspondent Michelle Miller made the case why the government should. “Gisselle Colon wanted to be bronze and beautiful. She sunbathed and bought a membership to a tanning salon several years ago. Last month, things turned ugly,” Miller said. “This is her scar. In May, Gisselle was diagnosed with melanoma, one of the deadliest and most preventable forms of cancer.” (h/t @KenShepherd ) And according to Miller, guess what – exposure to large doses of UVA radiation increases the likelihood you’ll wind up with skin problems. “An estimated 30 million Americans use tanning beds every year – 2.3 million are teenagers. It costs about $17 a visit. A 10 percent tax will raise that price by $1.70,” Miller continued. “It’s unclear whether that will be enough to discourage indoor tanners. What is clear, new research finds indoor tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75 percent. Why? Tanning booths emit those UVA and UVB radiation. UVA causes the burns, UVB the tan. Booths emit mostly UVA, but it can be at doses 12 times stronger than the sun.” This tax will hurt small business owners, according to the National Federation of Independent Business . The NFIB says approximately 19,000 “mom and pop” small businesses could be affected by this tax and those businesses will likely spend an average of more than $74 an hour to comply with federal tax paperwork burdens. “The first present we get under this new health care law takes effect this week – and that is the tanning tax,” Karen Harned of the NFIB said   at The Heritage Foundation’s Bloggers Briefing   on June 30. But this didn’t stop Miller from making the obligatory case for the tanning salon regulation, or even a ban. “New public service announcements take aim at teen tanning,” she said. “So too, are lawmakers. Thirty-two states now restrict it, for example, by requiring parental permission in person. And New York State is considering banning indoor tanning outright for anyone under 18.”

ABCBSNBC Lost One Million Viewers Last Quarter

The big three nightly news broadcasts, NBC Nightly, CBS Evening and ABC World, lost a combined one million viewers in the second quarter of 2010, according to TVNewser. These numbers are comparable to the first quarter , which saw Evening News and World News get their lowest average viewers ever, while NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage helped it get their highest average viewers since 2005. In the second quarter, NBC lost 440,000 viewers, ABC 260,000 and CBS 340,000. It was about this time last year that ABC and CBS’ news programs had their lowest ratings ever. These numbers are not at all surprising in light of the public’s continued distrust of the old media. As Newsbusters’ Rich Noyes wrote of a Rasmussen poll released earlier this month, “Perhaps as a result, the poll finds an astonishing two-thirds of the public (66 percent) say they are angry with the media, ‘including 33 percent who are very angry’ with the press.” Polls going back to 1997 displayed a continued public distrust with the news media. In a Pew survey , 54 percent of Americans believed that the news media “gets in the way of society solving its problems.” In 2006 a CBS poll showed 36 percent of adults had very little confidence in the news media. There is also an expanding array of media options, both on the air and online. Not only can many of the evening news programs be found online shortly after broadcast, but 24 hour news channels allow one to get the content of the nightly news well before the program is on, to say nothing of multimedia sites such as Huffington Post, Brietbart and others which allow consumers access to a lot of news and opinion. TVNewser also reports that the 24 hour channels are also losing viewers, though not at the same rate as evening news programs. ( Here , here and here .)

Death of 15 year old at Los Angeles Rave Renews Calls for Rave Bans

A 15-year-old girl died Tuesday of a suspected drug overdose after attending a rave over the weekend at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that had a minimum age requirement of 16. The girl, identified by family members as Sasha Rodriguez, was one of two rave attendees who were in critical condition at California Hospital Medical Center after the 14th annual Electric Daisy Carnival. As Sasha's family decided whether to remove her from life support Tuesday, her mother, Grace Rodriguez, told the CBS Evening News: “I was supposed to be planning her Sweet Sixteen party. Now I have to plan her funeral.” added by: jubal
