Ryan Reynolds: ‘Green Lantern’ Is ‘Better Than I Had Hoped’

After initially lukewarm reception to first trailer, Reynolds was relieved to see fans’ reaction to footage at WonderCon. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Reynolds Photo: MTV News Ryan Reynolds might not have been freaked out about the initially lukewarm reception that greeted the first “Green Lantern” trailer , but he was certainly frustrated. After that footage dropped in November, there was precious little new multimedia to offer the public and prove that Warner Bros. really did have a winning comic book adaptation on its hands. “I just want it out there faster than Warner Bros. can unfortunately produce it,” Reynolds told us in late March at CinemaCon. “If anyone’s rushing it, it’s me.” It was a few days later at WonderCon, though, that Reynolds felt the tide begin to turn — not only for fans, but for himself. “The first time I saw it was just breathtaking. I think the first time it hit me that we really did it right was in WonderCon,” he told us recently. “I’d been shooting in Africa at the time, so I flew back just to be there, and I was exhausted, and they put up this 10 or 11 minutes of footage, and you could feel it going like a wave through the audience.” Reynolds walked away from the convention with a startling realization: “It’s better than I had hoped.” The 34-year-old actor may not have known exactly what to expect. Though he has been familiar with the comic book his whole life, he told us back in 2009 that he only “fell in love with the character” when he met with director Martin Campbell and heard the pitch for the film. Since then, he’s slogged through a lengthy shoot and a marathon post-production schedule during which so much of the film’s CGI-heavy world was created. To begin, all he wanted to do was learn exactly what it takes to make a summer blockbuster. Reynolds ended up walking away with the certainty that “Green Lantern” is a kick-ass movie. “For me, going into it, my expectations were really just to learn — not just about the character but about filmmaking like that. I was just so blown away to see what they accomplished juxtaposed with what they shot,” he said. “We were shooting in a blue-screen stage with nothing to interact with at all. And these incredible artists that they hired — Grant Major from ‘Lord of the Rings’ and Ngila Dickson as well, from the same franchise — they just created an entire living, breathing universe around us. That was amazing to see.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Green Lantern.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . In a special Movie Awards edition of ‘After Hours,’ Josh Horowitz learns the proper way to interview celebs. By Terri Schwartz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News With tonight’s MTV Movie Awards , MTV News’ crack interviewer Josh Horowitz needed to get his interviewing skills in tiptop shape, because, based on some of the recent chats he’s had with big-time celebrities, he was far from prepared. In the three MTV Movie Awards editions of “After Hours,” Horowitz is run through the wringer to get his interviewing skills up to par. Apparently, over the past few months of junket interviews, from the Tribeca Film Festival to chatting with the cast of “Bad Teacher,” Horowitz has performed a series of question faux pas that have made our friendly neighborhood celebrities a bit uncomfortable. Sorry, Horowitz, but Keanu Reeves isn’t a fan of suggestions that he should change his name, and Dwayne Johnson doesn’t like hearing that he’s packed on a few pounds and is now doughy. Cameron Diaz definitely doesn’t want your bottom in her face, and Olivia Wilde has heard that she is pretty often enough. Fortunately, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence have come in to put Horowitz in his place and teach him a thing or two about good reporting techniques — and how to be better than Mario Lopez. Step one: bronzer, bronzer and more bronzer. Once Horowitz was tan enough, Lawrence demanded he lose the glasses. After he raised some concerns about the whole not-being-able-to-see thing, Lawrence replied angrily, “Mario Lopez is legally blind and that’s never stopped him. Glasses off!” After running him through a host of temperamental A-lister behaviors — demanding he ask her about her love life and then sweetly declining to answer his questions — McAvoy took over. Step two: Hit the gym. Wearing an X-Men T-shirt and a tortured expression, Horowitz was put through McAvoy’s rigorous workout regimen, including push-ups while being antagonized about interviewing Angelina Jolie and being riled up about Mario Lopez while hitting a punching bag. The final step of McAvoy’s training plan? A big ol’ smooch on Horowitz’s lips. Hopefully, that will be enough to put Horowitz on the right page for the Movie Awards. ‘Super 8’ Exclusive Brings Us Closer To The Mystery

At the MTV Movie Awards, J.J. Abrams and Co. gave an exclusive peek at what triggers his flick’s chaotic chain of events. By Kara Warner Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee and Riley Griffiths in “Super 8” Photo: Paramount The masterfully mysterious marketing campaign behind J.J. Abrams’ would-be blockbuster “Super 8” — which has included teasers, the super8secret.com site, TV spots and other veiled preview pieces — will officially come to an end this Friday, when the film finally opens nationwide in theaters. Until then, however, we must turn your attention to one more bit of teasery: the exclusive extended “Super 8” clip that was presented during the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 5). Introduced by none other than Abrams, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and stars Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney, this new footage takes us closer to the mystery than we’ve been able to get thus far. The spot opens with six kids (Fanning, Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Gabriel Basso, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills) in the middle of shooting their own movie at a train station, late at night. The sound of an oncoming train disrupts the scene, followed by the blaring of the train whistle, a shot of a truck speeding onto the track and colliding into the train, creating a chaotic explosion, which is captured by the super 8 camera that the kids were using to film their movie. This then sets into motion a series of action sequences, all pegged to the mystery of what prompted the train crash and what classified cargo may or may not have been onboard. There are eerie non-human sound effects, quick cuts of a small town in turmoil over a series of inexplicable events, explosions, military officials trying to decide how to destroy the certain something that is causing all the destruction, and our kid heroes caught up in the middle of it. So, wow. What does it all mean? For those who prefer not to dig too deep into trailers and teaser footage, we respect your willpower and desire to remain unspoiled. For those who’ve been analyzing every bit of tape since Abrams announced the film, do you have it figured out yet? What is this unidentified object that has sent this small town into an uproar and called military forces to action? Share your theories in the comments below! Sandra Bullock Made Snooki Cry At The MTV Movie Awards

Fellow ‘Jersey Shore’ star the Situation says actress’ speech (and ScarJo kiss) was ‘an awesome moment in entertainment history.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Damian Vaca Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and Nicole ‘Snookie’ Polizzi Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images “Jersey Shore” stars Snooki and the Situation had a blast participating in the 2010 MTV Movie Awards pre-show, but looking back on the night, they also named Sandra Bullock’s Generation Award acceptance (and sexy kiss with Scarlett Johansson) as one of the highlights of the show. “My favorite part was probably hosting the red carpet with Sway,” Snooki told MTV News at the Logo NewNowNext Awards, where she was up for Most Addictive Reality Star. “I met so many people, and I feel like I did a good job hosting. “I actually wanted to meet Adam Sandler and I did not see him I’m disappointed,” she continued. “But Sandra Bullock, her whole thing it was amazing. … She made me cry!” “The Sandra Bullock moment was definitely an awesome moment in entertainment history,” the Situation agreed, but he also really enjoyed just showing up at the show. “The arrival was definitely pretty cool. We arrived in a Phantom; the car was beautiful. We definitely arrived in style. It’s Situation nation and the ‘Jersey Shore’ [has] gone global. We’re just every moment.” Snooki loved having the chance to bring a little Jersey style to Hollywood. “[Our] Hummer limo was amazing,” she said. “And if you see from the red carpet, it looked like we were in a hot tub. So that’s like typically us. I loved it!” What was your favorite moment of the MTV Movie Awards? Share it in the comments. 2010 MTV Movie Awards Dominated By ‘New Moon,’ Sandra Bullock, Les Grossman

Aziz Ansari led the wildly hilarious (and frequently emotional) awards show. By Josh Wigler Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage With five awards for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” zilch for “Avatar,” visually insane dance numbers, gut-busting parodies and so much more, the 2010 MTV Movie Awards made for a wildly hilarious, frequently emotional and shockingly vulgar night. The evening kicked off with media mogul Les Grossman , who lived up to his fiery reputation by pushing popular actors like Will Smith and Michael Cera down some surprising new career paths. One such idea was “Bad Ass Cops,” a police-themed action adventure starring “Twilight” leading men Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. But Grossman’s time in the spotlight was quickly yanked away by host Aziz Ansari , who followed up with some segments of his own, including one that put him in the tragic shoes of Claireece “Precious” Jones. The host finally took the stage thanks to an introduction made by music sensation Justin Bieber, prompting Ansari to launch into an opening comedy act that set the tone for the rest of the hilarious evening. Part of Ansari’s monologue dwelled on the pervasive popularity of “Twilight,” a notion that was decisively affirmed when Kristen Stewart kicked off the awards portion of the show by winning Best Female Performance for her portrayal of Bella Swan in the supernatural-romance franchise. Even the award for Breakthrough Performance went to Anna Kendrick, who won for “Up in the Air” but got her break in the “Twilight Saga.” Presenters and “Get Him to the Greek” co-stars Jonah Hill and Russell Brand embarked on an epic Team Jacob vs. Team Edward debate that left Sean “Diddy” Combs fully confused. That wasn’t the only hilarious moment from the “Greek” stars, as Hill and Brand engaged in a full-on lip-locking assault during a special Kiss Cam segment that also claimed Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. But the most memorable kiss of the evening belonged to Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson , as they shared a quick smooch during Bullock’s acceptance of the Generation Award. Indeed, Bullock’s acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the evening, marking her first major public appearance since news broke of husband Jesse James’ infidelity. To that end, Bullock wanted to clear the air on certain rumors: She is not dead, everyone has cellulite “not just me,” and paparazzi photographers need more flattering lenses. Taking a more serious tone, Bullock emphasized that even in light of her Generation Award, something that typically goes to “old people” as they wind down their careers, as she put it, she has no plans of leaving the spotlight. “No matter what you might have heard or read lately, I love what I do, and I’m not going anywhere,” she said, adding that everyone in the audience should say a prayer for those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf. Her emotional speech was matched only by “The Hangover” actor Ken Jeong’s own acceptance of the Best WTF Moment award. Jeong broke down in tears recounting his wife’s battle with breast cancer. “She taught me that life is short and you shouldn’t be afraid to take chances,” the choked-up Jeong announced, happily revealing that his wife has been cancer-free for two years now. Beyond Bullock and Jeong’s heartfelt speeches, the show featured some very different but no less intense moments, thanks to performances of Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s “California Gurls,” Christina Aguilera’s medley of songs from her upcoming album Bionic (complete with a glowing heart on her underwear) and the return of Les Grossman in a shockingly well-choreographed dance number opposite Jennifer Lopez. But the biggest laughs of the night came from Team Aziz. The host provided viewers with a terrific “Human Giant” reunion alongside Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer in a sketch titled “Stunt Kidz.” He also appeared as Taavon, a tough-as-nails swagger coach (who can only sit on purple chairs) hired to impart swagger tips to comedian Zach Galifianakis, an effort that paid off, as the “Hangover” comedian ultimately won the award for Best Comedic Performance. Ansari as Taavon accepted the award on Galifianakis’ behalf. Ansari also paved the way for one of the most foulmouthed Movie Awards in the ceremony’s history. Following Bullock’s acknowledgement of the oil spill in the Gulf region, Ansari wildly shouted “f— you, BP” numerous times as he sang an R. Kelly-style tribute to “Avatar.” But his filthy language paled in comparison to Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell’s, as the stars of “The Other Guys” dangled from the theater’s ceiling, frantically cursing at their situation. The incessant swearing of the show’s many guests didn’t go unnoticed by actor Peter Facinelli. While accepting the Best Movie award for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” Carlisle Cullen dropped some F-bombs of his own and two of them managed to slip past the censors, to the surprise of many. Less surprising, to Ansari at least, was the virtual awards sweep made by “New Moon.” The host may have over-exaggerated by declaring that ” ‘Twilight’ won everything,” but the franchise’s second installment did emerge as the evening’s greatest winner with victories in the Best Movie, Best Male Performance, Best Female Performance, Best Kiss and Global Star categories. “The Hangover” was the second most successful film with wins for Best Comedic Performance and Best WTF Moment, while “Avatar” walked away without a single award to its name. Les Grossman Works Overtime At MTV Movie Awards With Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lopez

Show’s “producer” shakes his booty with J-Lo, horrifies Michael Cera and much more! By Kara Warner Les Grossman and Jennifer Lopez perform at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Resident “mega mogul” Les Grossman has been working overtime the last few weeks. First, he helped MTV promote the Movie Awards with three terrific and twisted promo spots . Then, Grossman, who was revealed to be “the producer of this year’s MTV Movie Awards ,” helped kick off the awards show with a special intro video . And third, he brought the house down with a showstopping musical number with two VIP guests. If anyone deserves a special Movie Awards shout-out, it’s Grossman. The intro vid kicked off with Grossman’s trademark booty-shaking, after which he announced to viewers his professional mantra: “Movies are a marriage of picture and sound. My job is to get them drunk and to f—, and the illegitimate baby they make is called entertainment.” Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are then revealed to be standing in the room, looking annoyed to be back listening to Grossman’s drawn-out speeches. The “Twilight” stars ask why they’re there, to which Grossman answers: “Two words.” And his assistant finishes: “Bad Ass Cops.” Cut to a spoof action movie trailer, in which Pattinson, toting a blazing gun and sporting a ridiculous blond handlebar moustache, says to the camera, “Somebody ask for a light?” To which Lautner, with a similar ‘stache, aviators and a faux leather jacket, adds, “It’s time to whip up some trouble!” and cracks a whip. Other highlights include Grossman’s purchase of “Matching Michael Cera bookends,” with the camera panning over to a dejected-looking Cera holding a stack of books. “I want to go home,” Cera pleads. And in a particularly profound teaching moment with Jaden Smith and his father, Will Smith, Grossman and his assistant get in a few “Fresh Prince” and “Parents Just Don’t Understand” jabs, but young Smith gets the last word when the two engage in a brief karate fight. Jaden “finishes it” and breaks Grossman’s arm. Finally, he ends the bit by equating the awards show to a piece of coal he’d shoved up his rear end and miraculously turned into a diamond … “Enjoy my two-hour sh–,” Smith says. Grossman’s best moment came when he graced the actual Gibson theater stage at the Movie Awards. The mastermind took to center stage, mike in hand, and called out for his buddy, rapper Ludacris, to sing his familiar song “Get Back.” Grossman then joined a group of female dancers for a little impromptu dancing, heavy on the booty-shaking and suggestive moves. Roughly a minute into the song, the tune switched to J.Lo’s “Get Right,” at which point Jennifer Lopez herself waltzed onto the stage to dance with Grossman. The twosome showed off some practiced choreography, complete with an impressive use of canes, and for the big finish, Grossman dropped down into a half split maneuver and popped back up. ‘Eclipse’ Exclusive Scene Turns Up The Jacob/Edward Tension

Bella’s torn between two loves in the parking lot clip that premiered on the MTV Movie Awards. By Larry Carroll Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit It’s been said (rather crassly) that the plotline of “Eclipse” boils down to a young woman’s choice between bestiality and necrophilia. On June 30, “Twilight” fans all over the world will finally be able to feast their eyes on Bella’s struggle to reconcile her feelings for monstrous Jacob and undead Edward. Those watching tonight’s MTV Movie Awards, however, just received an exclusive sneak peek at her indecision — and now, the clip is here to appease your own ravenous, to-die-for appetite. “Charlie said you left town,” Jacob (Taylor Lautner) says, confronting Bella (Kristen Stewart) with Edward (Robert Pattinson) at her side in the Forks High parking lot. “Yeah,” responds Bella, who has her hoodie pulled up over her head. “To visit my mom. Why?” “He’s checking to see if you’re still human,” sneers a defensive Edward. Although lots of big news is bound to be made at the Movie Awards, few moments have garnered as much anticipation as this clip, one of the few full scenes to be released from David Slade’s “Eclipse.” The scene helps set up a plotline involving evil vampire Victoria and gives fans a glimpse of the shifting dynamic between the three leads. “Look, I’m here to warn you,” steams Jacob, clearly taking over the alpha-dog mentality and looking very little like the Jacob of the original “Twilight” film, whom Edward could easily have knocked on his heels. “If your kind come on our land again …” “You should leave,” Edward shoots back. “Now.” “She has a right to know,” responds Jacob, looking noticeably — um — wetter than you might expect. “She is the one the redhead wants.” “I was trying to protect you,” Edward says to Bella. “By lying to me!” she retorts, moments before hopping onto Jacob’s motorcycle and riding off. Fans will undoubtedly spend the next few days breaking the scene down as if they were a Cullen picking apart a deer’s bones. And one aspect that should promote conversation is KStew’s ability to hold the scene and steer it, despite being the physically smallest person in the frame. A lot has been written about Taylor’s increasingly formidable screen presence — but this brief clip reminds us once again why Kristen is the true heart and soul of these films. For good measure, our friends at Summit Entertainment have peppered the end of the scene with a quick montage of action-heavy shots from “Eclipse.” Although the majority have been seen previously in trailers, they never get old: Victoria under attack, newborns emerging from the water, Jackson Rathbone’s Jasper on the attack, Victoria in the tree and a few more clips worth freeze-framing. All in all, it’s enough to make fans look away from the Movie Awards just long enough to ask one simple question: Is it too early to vote for next year’s show? ‘Last Airbender’ Clip Premieres On MTV Movie Awards

Footage, featuring Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone, promises spectacular set-up for M. Night Shyamalan adaptation. By Todd Gilchrist Dev Patel in “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last year, M. Night Shyamalan took the helm of “The Last Airbender,” a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s popular animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and a new clip from the film premiered on tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. While it remains to be seen whether the film will feature one of the writer/ director’s trademark twist endings, the footage fans are seeing promises nothing short of a spectacular set-up for an epic franchise. The clip opens with a shot of Katara (Nicola Peltz) and Sokka (“Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone) as they trudge through a snowy landscape. The pair emerges onto a frozen lake where something lurks ominously beneath them in the water below. After Sokka strikes the ice, a ball rises before them and a bolt of energy erupts from the top of it. Although it’s not entirely clear whether the Airbender himself pops out of that big ball of icy energy, as he lands center screen, a disembodied voice tells him, “Airbender, only you have the power to master all of the elements and save us all.” While such an observation would certainly offer anyone else an unwanted amount of pressure, Airbender promptly responds by kicking the tar out of seemingly everyone in his path, using the four elements — air, water, fire and earth — to dispatch adversaries and generally look like a total badass. And when those elements don’t do the job, Airbender’s got a freaking spear just for added measure. Of course, you’ll have to see if Airbender is truly the last of his kind, and perhaps more importantly, if he is the last man standing, when the movie arrives in theaters on July 2. But in the meantime, check out everything MTV has on “The Last Airbender,” as well as a lot of other new movies coming to theaters soon! Chris Rock Surprised Aziz Ansari Never Called Him For Hosting Advice

The 2010 MTV Movie Awards host could have learned ‘the ins and outs’ of awards shows from Rock, if only he’d asked. By Todd Gilchrist No matter who takes over hosting duties at MTV’s awards shows, they’re always standing on the shoulders of giants. After all, comedic luminaries like Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Mike Myers and Ben Stiller have previously taken the stage to take the stuffing out of stuffy awards shows. But one of the most iconic Video Music Awards hosts, Chris Rock, told MTV News that he was surprised that 2010 Movie Awards host, Aziz Ansari hadn’t yet called him for advice. “I like Aziz, but he hasn’t called me,” Rock said Saturday at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards (which air on June 20). “That’s a bad sign.” Rock explained that he has actually offered guidance to other aspiring hosts in the past. “See, most of the hosts, they get the job and they call me, and I tell them the ins and outs,” said Rock, who followed up his 2003 VMAs stint by hosting the Oscars in 2005. “But he hasn’t called me.” Rock jokingly said that since Ansari never reached out to him, he refuses to take responsibility if there are any snafus during Sunday night’s awards ceremony. “If he messes up, it has nothing to do with me,” Rock said with a shrug. Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
