Sarah Palin Reiterates Support For Chick-fil-A, May Not Understand First Amendment

While hundreds of thousands partook in Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day , former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin repeated her support for the fast-food chain. In a Fox News interview , the 2008 V.P. nominee defended Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy’s decision to publicly express anti-gay marriage views. Moreover, she called backlash against Chick-fil-A an affront to free speech. “Well, that calling for the boycott is a real – has a chilling effect on our 1st Amendment rights,” Palin told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “And the owner of the Chick-fil-A business had merely voiced his personal opinion about supporting traditional definition of marriage.” “One boy, one girl, falling in love, getting married.” “Having voiced support for kind of that cornerstone of all civilization and all religions since the beginning of time, he then basically [is] getting crucified.” Whichever side you’re on in the gay marriage debate, Sarah Palin’s interpretation of the 1st Amendment is interesting to say the least. Dan Cathy certainly can express his opinions, but as the head of a popular company, has to expect repercussions from such statements. People who disagree are also free to say and do what they want. Would Palin call boycotts of a pro -gay marriage restaurant an affront to free speech? How is criticizing something one dislikes – for any reason – and deciding to not give it money akin to crucifying Cathy? Is he dead? Or in jail? Isn’t boycotting Chick-fil-A basically the same as mobilizing support for a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day – the 1st Amendment at its finest? We digress . If you missed it, Cathy sparked controversy last month when he responded to a question about his anti-gay marriage views. He told an interviewer that he was “guilty as charged.” “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is about,” Cathy said. These comments have drawn angry responses from a number of politicians and public figures, including calls to boycott the business, sever partnerships and even block Chick-fil-A’s expansion into various cities. Conservatives quickly rallied around the restaurant, with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee organizing a “Chick-fil-A Apprectiation Day” that gained grassroots momentum and a few high-profile backers on the right. Palin also went to bat for the restaurant last month, sending out a picture of her and her husband, Todd, ” supporting a great business .” What’s your opinion on the Chick-fil-A controversy?

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Dictator Spills Ashes On Ryan Seacrest At Oscars

Republic of Wadiya’s leader was armed with an urn purportedly containing ashes of Kim Jong Il on Sunday night. By Kevin P. Sullivan “The Dictator” arrives at the 2012 Oscars Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images True to his word and the threats he made on live television, Sacha Baron Cohen arrived on the red carpet for the 2012 Oscars in character as General Aladeen, the leader from his upcoming movie “The Dictator.” But appearing as the Dictator was just the beginning. Once he hit the carpet, Baron Cohen made as big a scene as many imagined he would as Ryan Seacrest became the unwitting victim of the actor’s publicity stunt. Armed with an urn supposedly containing the ashes of North Korea’s Kim Jong Il, Baron Cohen spilled the powdery contents of the container all over the E! host and his tuxedo. It was the final moment in a long battle of the wills with the Academy, which Baron Cohen ultimately won , resulting in his appearance in character as the ruler of the fictional nation, the Republic of Wadiya, flanked by his female security entourage. The appearance came after a long, public battle between the producers of the show and Baron Cohen, who was initially invited because of his involvement in Best Picture nominee “Hugo.” Word soon leaked out that Baron Cohen planned to walk the carpet in costume to promote his new film. It wasn’t long before the Academy pulled his tickets in an attempt to discourage his turning the red carpet into a self-promotional platform. Soon after the ban, Baron Cohen went on the offensive, releasing a statement in character and threatening the Academy if his tickets were not honored. “While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences.” Luckily for the Academy, they allowed Baron Cohen to walk the carpet in his large hair, beard and military garb. Not long after the reversal on the decision, Oscar 2012 producer Brian Grazer told “Extra” that he was excited for Baron Cohen’s appearance. “We’re thrilled to have him and he’ll be on the red carpet, I guess, dressed as the Dictator,” he said. Sacha Baron Cohen Will Attend Oscars As ‘The Dictator’

‘We’re thrilled to have him,’ Academy Awards producer Brian Grazer says. By Ryan J. Downey Sacha Baron Cohen as General Aladeen in “The Dictator” Photo: Paramount Action heroes like Rambo may not give in to threats, but Oscar producers caved to “The Dictator.” Of course, it’s all in good fun. In an interview with “Extra,” producer Brian Grazer confirmed Sacha Baron Cohen will arrive at the Academy Awards on Sunday as his character from his forthcoming political satire, contrary to earlier reports. “We’re thrilled to have him and he’ll be on the red carpet, I guess, dressed as the ‘dictator,’ ” he told “Extra.” Grazer, a producer on movies like “A Beautiful Mind” and “Apollo 13,” is also producing this year’s Oscars. In “The Dictator,” Baron Cohen adds the totalitarian leader of a fictitious country to his list of alter egos, which already included Ali G, Borat and Bruno, all of whom have headlined feature films since launching on “The Ali G Show.” He played a supporting role in Best Picture nominee “Hugo” but was insistent about attending the awards show in character as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen. Earlier on Friday (February 24), the English actor and comedian called in to the “Today” show (as Aladeen) to address his alleged ban from awards. The “Today” interview came on the heels of a video message on the website for “The Republic of Wadiya,” in which the dictator made a number of threats. “On behalf of the nation of Wadiya, I am outraged at being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Zionists,” General Aladeen said in the video. “While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences.” Back in 2007, Oscar producers wouldn’t allow the actor to appear in character as Borat. At press time, a spokesperson for the Academy told The Hollywood Reporter she had not heard about the plans for Cohen for Sunday. “The Dictator” arrives in theaters May 11. Joe Jonas, Jennifer Love Hewitt Cozy Up In ‘Cleveland’

On the JoBro’s latest episode of ‘Hot in Cleveland,’ premiering Wednesday night on TV Land, his and Hewitt’s characters get engaged. By Kara Warner Joe Jonas Photo: MTV News Jet-setting actor/musician Joe Jonas has once again made time in his busy schedule for a little stop through Cleveland — “Hot in Cleveland,” that is, the popular show on TV Land starring Valerie Bertinelli, Betty White, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves. Jonas has a guest-starring role on the sitcom as the wayward son of Bertinelli’s character. MTV News was lucky enough to visit the set of “Cleveland” on the day Jonas filmed his second guest spot, which premieres Wednesday night (January 25) at 10 p.m. ET. When we caught up with him for a few minutes between scenes, he shared some details about his return to the show. “Being back on the show, [my character Will is] engaged, and I have to be engaged to Jennifer Love Hewitt, which is really nice,” he said. “We’re both sons and daughters of characters on the show, and we show up and surprise everybody. They don’t expect us to be engaged.” Jonas said that while it was fun to work with Hewitt, their characters’ engagement doesn’t exactly last for long. “Both of our characters are really different. I think I’m a little bit blinded by the fact that she may not be the perfect person for me. I think we last probably less than Kim Kardashian in this,” he joked. Long engagements or no, Jonas said he loves his time on the show and would be happy to come back any time. “I would love to be able to return again. The first episode when I left, people were like, ‘Are you going to be back soon?’ and I said, ‘I think so.’ I don’t think my character passed away, so I think we’re good. I don’t die in this episode either,” he added. “So I’m still around, so I could definitely come back if they’d like me to. I have a fun time being on the set and I love the cast; it’s kind of like a family.” Are you excited to see Joe in “Cleveland” again? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Joe Jonas

Stephen Colbert Wins Approval for SuperPAC

Stephen Colbert will not be our next President. But he may have a say who gets the job. The comedian/talk show host won approval today from the Federal Election Committee to form a SuperPAC, meaning Colbert can raise money and produce/buy television time for political advertisements. “Moments ago the Federal Election Committee made their ruling,” Colbert said ta crown below outside the FEC headquarters. “And ladies and gentlemen I’m sorry to say, we won!” Stephen Colbert Super PAC Announcement How did this come about? Former FEC Chairman Robert Lenhard said the ruling “means people can use their network’s resources to fund their own PAC ads without needing to report it on their network, on their show.” As for the host of The Colbert Report? Added Lenhard: “I think he’s going to have fun. But until he gets at least a million dollars he’s not going to run many ads outside of his show.” Colbert is already working on that, however. He solicited donations from fans during his speech, telling supporters: “I don’t know about you but I do not accept limits on my free speech, I don’t know about you but I do not accept the status quo. But I do accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.”

Controversy Looming In Houston Over Videotape That Shows One-Time Brutally Beating Black Teenage Boy

An explosive videotape that appears to show a group of Houston police officers beating a black teen burglary suspect last March has led to the firing and indictment of those officers, and a flaring controversy. A surveillance camera caught the end of a police chase of 15-year-old Chad Holley, who had allegedly burglarizing a home. Holley goes right to the ground, face-down, hands over his head, as if to surrender. But then, reports CBS News correspondent Seth Doane, one officer appears to stomp on Holley’s head, while others kick him. One cop seems to land five kicks. Then, another officer punches him again, and again. As he’s picked up, there’s another kick. “They just started kicking me from there, and I blanked out,” Holley says. The video wasn’t supposed to be seen yet by the public, but was leaked by community activist Quannel X of the New Black Panthers Party this week. He told “Early Show on Saturday Morning” co-anchor Russ Mitchell he was “shocked” when he first saw the tape. “I was appalled,” he said. “I was absolutely angry at what they were doing, these police officers, to this young man who was on the ground. You could clearly see he surrendered, he gave up, and the beating he took was absolutely unnecessary. It was shameful.” “We hear these stories all the time in our community, all the time,” local NAACP President D.Z. Cofield told reporters. “We just happen to have one that was caught on tape.” A federal judge had barred the release of the video before a trial scheduled this summer, but then came the leak. Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who’d supported the judge’s decision keeping the video under wraps, told a news conference, “I resent any implication that we were trying to hide the tape. … We investigated. We turned that investigation over to the district attorney, we backed the district attorney, and we fired the officers.” Four officers have been indicted, charged with “official oppression,” a misdemeanor, not a felony. If convicted, each faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Mitchell remarked to X, “Defense attorneys and Houston police say it will be tough for the defendants to get a fair trial now that this tape is out there, and they are blaming you specifically for putting this tape out there.” “I believe the people have a constitutional right to see the videotape,” X replied. “These are public servants in uniform, caught in the public, and this was caught on tape. And to say to the people that you could not see what they’re doing in uniform, in the public, is a disgrace and disrespectful to the citizens of Harris County, who have the intelligence and the ability to sit on a jury, look at the facts, put the pretrial publicity to the side and weigh the real information in this case. “The videotape speaks for itself. There’s not much science to it. So to say that a jury can’t make a clear determination of what they’re seeing and weigh the facts in this case here in Harris County is an insult to the citizens and the people of Harris County.” But Dick DeGuerin, lawyer for one of the officers seen in the tape, the first one to arrive at the scene, says he’s “very concerned” about his client getting a fair trial now that the video is in the public domain, “and all the judges that have seen this have been concerned about it. “I’m a lawyer. I respect the law. And I think that a case like this ought to be played out in the courts before a fair jury that’s not influenced unduly by a video that’s now gone viral. It’s ugly. It’s awful. But if you look at it very carefully, my client, for instance, all he did was he ran up and tried to get this burglar from escaping and also tried to get his hands behind his back so he could be handcuffed. And then he ran off and made another arrest. He was only there less than four seconds.” DeGuerin concedes, “If you look at the tape, you get angry. Anybody gets angry at seeing something like this.” “These officers are paid by the public, with tax dollars,” Mitchell pointed out. “Shouldn’t the public have the right to see this tape?” “Yes,” DeGuerin responded, “but I don’t think they have the right to see it right away. When you balance two constitutional rights, the right to a fair trial, and the right — the first amendment right of free speech, any time you have to balance one constitutional right against another, there has to be some compromise. The only compromise that all of the courts that looked at this said was, wait until the proper time to release the tape.” Mitchell noted that Quannel X has been “applauded by the folks in your community for getting this tape into the public light. However there are people out there, I understand you received death threats, as well. Why do you think there are people angry about this?” “Because,” X said, “many in the black community have always said that these beatings were taking place. Many African-American men make these allegations weekly in our community (about) the Houston Police Department. But this is the first time that we’ve ever captured one on videotape. And then, when the mayor herself publicly stated that I should be prosecuted for releasing this videotape to the public, that inflamed the community, and inflamed both sides, both police and those who want the police to be punished for this videotape. So I am in total disagreement with the mayor and those who say that the public had no right to see this videotape.” Source
