Anton Yelchin on Fright Night and Twilight, Honoring the Original, and Odd Thomas

Devotees of Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire pic Fright Night , Anton Yelchin would like to allay your fears about Craig Gillespie’s remake of the horror cult classic. The new Fright Night , in theaters today, pays loving homage to the original even as it updates the setting to suburban Las Vegas, turns teen hero Charley Brewster (Yelchin) into a savvy, sneaker-freak cool kid with a hot girlfriend (Imogen Poots), and makes new changes to Fright Night ‘s cast of characters, from the dangerously sexy vampire next door ( Colin Farrell ) to the angry geek “Evil” Ed ( Christopher Mintz-Plasse ) to the drastically re-imagined Peter Vincent (David Tennant), now a Criss Angel-like Vegas magician with a penthouse suit on the Strip.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse Recalls Crashing Car On ‘When I Was 17’

The season premiere of ‘When I Was 17,’ also featuring Bow Wow and Colbie Caillat, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Christopher Mintz-Plasse on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV In the new movie “Fright Night,” Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays a character who’s hot on the heels of a predator. It’s a role in which he’s had some practice. Back when he was 17, Mintz-Plasse and his friends actually played a game called “Predator.” On the season premiere of “When I Was 17” this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, Mintz-Plasse recounts how one particularly intense game ended with him crashing his car. “When I was 17, this is a game in the valley that you play with your friends, it’s called ‘Predator,’ ” Mintz-Plasse explains. “You start at a friend’s house, two people get in the backseat, and they get blindfolded so they don’t know where they’re going. “So, you drop them off on a corner somewhere and take the blindfolds from them. The car goes back to the house, and when that happens, that’s when the game actually starts.” The goal for his passengers was to find a way back to home base without getting tagged, but Mintz-Plasse wasn’t about to let that happen. He decided to drive especially rough to confuse his blindfolded friends before dropping them off. But, his efforts went one step too far. “I was driving, and I like to mess with my friends, so I was really trying to get in their heads,” he recalls. “And I was just jerking left and right, and then I hit the gas pedal going up a hill, and I turn the wheel, and I lost control, and the two right wheels went up. It was horrifying. It almost tipped over this way, but I grabbed the wheel and spun it back down.” While his quick thinking might have helped him avoid a major accident, he still faced some damage. “As the car slammed, it just spun up on a curb and ran into a fence,” he says. Luckily, everyone walked away without injuries, but his parents were less than pleased when they heard the news. “My parents were pissed,” he adds. Find out whether Mintz-Plasse got to keep his car keys on the season premiere of “When I Was 17” this Saturday. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. ‘Fright Night’: The Reviews Are In!

Colin Farrell flick ‘blends Eighties cheese with Nineties snark — a combination that works better than it sounds,’ critics say. By Kara Warner Colin Farrell in “Fright Night” Photo: DreamWorks If you’ve seen the “Fright Night” trailers or are familiar with the ’85 cult classic, you know this is not your run-of-the-mill vampire movie — at least by today’s “Twilight” standards, anyway. There are no swoony undead to be found in this horror-comedy — just a lot of blood and plenty of laughs. Here at MTV News, we’ve been amped about the film from the get-go, and even featured it as part of our exclusive Sneak Peek Week leading up to the Movie Awards. The film stars Colin Farrell as a bloodthirsty vampire who heads to suburbia and terrorizes his next-door neighbor Charley, played by “Star Trek” veteran Anton Yelchin . Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays vampire convert “Evil” Ed Thompson, “Harry Potter” alum and former “Doctor Who” David Tennant is vamp-hunting showman Peter Vincent and “Solitary Man” breakout Imogen Poots portrays love interest Amy, with Toni Collette and Dave Franco also popping up. Now that the well-received reboot is finally in theaters, it’s time to see what the critics think. Grab your garlic and hold onto some holy water as we sift through the “Fright Night” reviews. The Original Story Vs. The Reboot “You’ll need a taste for nostalgia to really appreciate ‘Fright Night,’ which knowingly blends Eighties cheese with Nineties snark — a combination that works better than it sounds. Authenticity is the key to the movie’s success: the remake is actually based on a 1985 horror flick, and was written by Marti Noxon, well-known for her work on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ One thing’s for sure: if you’re expecting the self-serious brooding of ‘Twilight,’ you’re gonna be disappointed. But if you have a soft spot for cult horror comedies like ‘The Lost Boys,’ ‘The Monster Squad,’ or even the first ‘Fright Night,’ this ought to be right up your (dark) alley. Noxon and director Craig Gillespie update the attitude for a post-‘Buffy’ generation, but their remake is generally faithful to the original.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News The Performances “Former ‘Doctor Who’ star David Tennant has a plum role as a Criss Angel-like Vegas cheeseball whose vampire-themed stage show might hide a special connection to vampire lore. It’s a big, fun performance overshadowed only by Farrell, who plays his character as a monster who’s learned to use an ordinary-dude exterior to blend in with his new surroundings. When he asks Yelchin for a ‘sixer,’ Farrell delivers his lines with a Matt Dillon-like flatness, but his eyes tell another story: Beneath the surface, he’s all coiled hunger and pitiless manipulation, doing what he has to do to get close to victims who, against their better judgment, want to get close to him. He creates almost unbearable tension by doing virtually nothing at all, and though ‘Fright Night’ eventually reveals him as the vampire equivalent of the f—ing shark from ‘Jaws,’ it’s never better than when it lets him poke his fin just above the surface.” — Keith Phipps, the Onion A.V. Club The Final Word “As in the earlier film, this one dances always at the edge of comedy. It especially has fun with the Rules of Vampire Behavior, which Jerry even teases Charley about. Without spoiling a single thing, I can tell you that one of the inevitable stakes through the heart in this movie is an inspired use of product placement. As vampire movies go, ‘Fright Night’ is a pretty good one.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Check out everything we’ve got on “Fright Night.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Is Sexy Fright Night Star Sandra Vergara REALLY Sofia Vergara’s Sister? [PICS]

They’re both Columbian, they’re both Vergaras, and they’re both super sexy. There’s no doubt about that. But according to Sofia Vergara , boobalicious star of Modern Family , the woman whom reporters have been calling her “younger sister,” Fright Night star Sandra Vergara (standing at left), isn’t really her sibling. As it turns out, Sandra is actually Sofia’s cousin, but the two were raised together- Sandra was taken in by Sofia’s parents at an early age. Sofia’s upset that Sandra isn’t making the distinction in the press, basically accusing her soon-to-be-estranged relative of riding her big, round, delicious coconuts- er, coattails- to stardom. Sandra has a sexy role in the upcoming vampire remake Fright Night, including several scenes where she strips to her bra and one Colum-believable thong shot as she puts on a black robe. Could she be purposefully playing up the Sofia commection to get more publicity for her role? Or is Sofia simply failing to show the adopted-sisterly love? Skin Central doesn’t really care, as long as these addictive Columbian exports keep showing up on our computer screens! Play com-bare and contr-ass with Sandra Vergara and Sofia Vergara after the jump!
