Coldplay Unveil ‘Paradise’ Single, Duet With Rihanna

Band’s much-anticipated Mylo Xyloto features 14 songs, including team-up with RiRi on ‘Princess Of China.’ By James Montgomery Coldplay’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto Photo: Parlophone Records They may still be tinkering with the tunes but, bit by bit, Coldplay are letting Mylo Xyloto out of the bag. On Monday (September 12), they not only unveiled the second single from the album — a pulsing, preternaturally pretty song called “Paradise” — they also revealed the full track list for Xyloto, a collection of 14 songs that includes one rather, uh, unexpected guest star: Rihanna . Yes, RiRi contributes vocals to the new track “Princess of China,” which, along with live Coldplay favorites like “M.M.I.X.,” “Hurts Like Heaven” and “Charlie Brown” made Xyloto’s final cut. Also included on the album are “Up In Flames” and “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart,” a pair of songs that Coldplay’s mysterious Roadie #42 recently described as “a masterwork of restraint” and “almost violently life-affirming,” respectively. Mylo Xyloto is produced by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, with (as a press release from the band’s publicist puts it) “enoxification and additional composition” from Brian Eno. The album will hit stores in the U.S. on October 24. “Paradise” is the second official single off the disc, following in the footsteps of the massive “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” , and the similarities between the tracks don’t end there. With its shimmering electronic pulses, whomping beat, repeated vocal mantras, wide-screen harmonies and epic crescendo, “Paradise” seems like the spiritual sequel to “Waterfall” (the latter is even mentioned in frontman Chris Martin’s lyrics) and builds on a similar theme: one of maximum uplift. The final track list for Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto, according to the band’s spokesperson:

Adele’s Unstoppable 21, By The Numbers

We take a look at the album’s chart domination as it reaches #1 yet again. By Jocelyn Vena Adele’s 21 Photo: Columbia Records Adele seems to be unstoppable. Her sophomore release, 21, has managed to top the charts for nearly as many weeks as it’s been out. Clearly, this Brit has never heard of the sophomore slump. If you take the album by the numbers, it’s had quite the impressive run. Just how impressive? Here’s how it shakes out: 114,314 : The number of units she sold this week, beating out Lady Gaga’s Born This Way with 100,255 units. 16 : The number of times Adele’s 21 has been on the charts. 10 : The number of times it’s topped the charts. 2.2 million : The number of records sold since the album hit stores in late February . Gaga, meanwhile, has sold about 1.4 million records in three weeks. 1 : The number of singles released from the album. 8 : The number of consecutive weeks “Rolling in the Deep” has ruled the singles charts. 352,000 : The number of albums sold in 21 ‘s first week, compared to Gaga’s 1.1 million . “It is something, isn’t it?” Dave Bakula, Nielsen’s senior vice president of analytics, told MTV News. “I think if we were to look at this back at the beginning of the record … I don’t think anyone would have guessed.” Given that more than 2 million people have already bought Adele’s album, the question remains: Who is still buying it? “It shows the power … of her fanbase. You’ve got a song that’s performing very, very well, still being discovered by new people every week,” Bakula said. “You’ve got an artist here who wasn’t a household name prior to this record coming out, so you do still have that discovery process going on with her. “What it really goes to show is the fact that there still are that many people discovering the album every week,” he added. “I think it shows a lot about the latent demand that is out there for great music.” Can she be beat? “To be honest, certainly there are releases week in and week out that will come and go, much like Gaga,” he said. ” … There are always going to releases who come in and come out like Beyonc

Exclusive: Eminem To Perform At The Grammys

Other performers for February 13 show will be announced Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage Consider Eminem ‘s comeback complete. The superstar MC will take the stage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards next month in Los Angeles, MTV News has learned exclusively. The Recording Academy will officially announce Em and other performers on Thursday; Pitchfork reported Wednesday (January 12) that Arcade Fire will also be performing at the awards show. The performance is the latest in a line of accomplishments for Eminem since he released Recovery, which is up for Album of the Year. The Detroit lyricist scored a pair of #1 singles from the album with “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. Those songs helped Em earn 10 Grammy nominations . It’s quite a turnaround from his last project, Relapse. That album debuted at #1 but received mixed reviews, despite winning Best Rap Album at the 2009 Grammys. With Recovery, however, Em has returned to form. Now, he’s set to take center stage at the prestigious event. Twelve months ago, he joined Drake for the then-upstart’s “Forever” performance. But for this year’s telecast, the multiple Grammy winner will take top billing. He’s already been featured in the show’s promotional campaign . A touching 30-second spot showcases Em’s musical legacy , from the loss of his friend, fellow MC Proof, to his struggles through drug dependency and his rise back to the top of the hip-hop game. There’s no question the veteran MC will be the star of the festivities. In December, when nominations were revealed, the rapper led the pack, besting Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, who received seven and six nominations, respectively. The Grammys air Sunday, February 13, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What song are you hoping Eminem performs at the Grammys? Let us know in the comments! Sarah Palin Slams ‘American Idol’ For Hosting ‘Talent Deprived’ Contestants

In her upcoming memoir, the former vice-presidential candidate labels unskilled ‘Idol’ competitors ‘victims of the cult of self-esteem.’ By Nuzhat Naoreen Sarah Palin Photo: Jewel Samad/ AFP/ Getty Images “American Idol” may entertain millions of viewers, but Sarah Palin apparently isn’t one of them. In excerpts from her upcoming memoir, “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag,” leaked by Gawker , the former vice-presidential candidate slams the reality show for hosting what she refers to as “talent deprived” contestants. “Did you ever wonder where the producers of ‘American Idol’ come up with the seemingly endless supply of people who can’t sing but are deluded enough to get in front of a national television audience and screech out a song anyway?” Palin asks in the book. Palin, whose daughter Bristol Palin is currently on the reality show “Dancing With the Stars,” goes on to say those unqualified contestants who appear on “Idol” are “victims of the cult of self-esteem.” “No one they’ve encountered in their lives — from their parents to their teachers to their president — wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth,” she writes. “So they grew up convinced they could become big pop stars like Michael Jackson.” But it’s not all criticism. Palin praises former judge Simon Cowell for dishing out hard truths to the competitors. “Cowell can be a little harsh at times, but he upholds the highest standards and something in us recognizes and responds to that,” she writes. “Unfortunately Cowell is almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths.” Palin further argues that “hard truths” are necessary, as “a growing chorus of voices is trying to convince our kids that hard work isn’t necessary anymore.” Palin’s memoir is set to be released on Tuesday (November 23). What do you think about Sarah Palin’s “American Idol” critique? Tell us in the comments.

Lady Gaga Says Born This Way Is Nearly Finished, ‘Almost Perfect’

‘It won’t be much longer, it’s almost perfect. But I (we) don’t want almost,’ Gaga tweets about forthcoming album. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images By now, you are probably aware that Lady Gaga’s upcoming Born This Way album is “incredible,” “shocking,” “bold and beautiful,” “utter liberation,” and, of course, “crazy amazing.” But what you might not have known is that it is finally, totally, completely finished. Almost. That’s according to Gaga herself, who took to her Twitter account on Wednesday to announce that she’s nearly wrapped production on Born, and that her little monsters’ long wait is just about over. Unless she’s not satisfied with every last detail, of course. “Endless melodies, hooks [and] poetry sledge-hammering my skull,” she tweeted . “It won’t be much longer, it’s almost perfect. But I (we) don’t want almost.” Of course, there’s still no release date (tentative or otherwise) for Born This Way, though Gaga has been playing songs from the album — like “You And I” and “Living on the Radio” — since the summer, and has discussed the project at length during her Monster Ball performances. In September, at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , she announced the title of the album after winning Video of the Year. Those who have heard Born This Way can’t seem to stop gushing over it. On Tuesday, MTV News caught up with Gaga’s label boss, Akon, who said the album “is definitely … a notch up” from her previous work, and that she’s “taking things to the next level.” Gaga’s manager, Troy Carter, said that he’s just starting to play music from Born for Interscope Records, and that the songs on the album are “incredible.” He also hinted that the album would be “coming soon.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga
