Wife Of First White NFL Player To Kneel During National Anthem: ‘Don’t Make Him A White Savior’

Read the original:

Erica DeValve , the wife of Cleveland Brown’s player, Seth DeValve released a statement Thursday regarding her husband’s participation in the widespread NFL National Anthem protests spurred by Colin Kaepernick . The DeValves are an interracial couple who met over two years ago while they were students at Princeton and married in June 2017. RELATED:  George Foreman Slams Kaepernick As Unpatriotic While Praising Trump’s Leadership On August 21, DeValve knelt in silent solidarity with a group of Black teammates while the rest of the arena stood to sing the anthem during a pre-season game against the New York Giants. The imagery went viral and further added to the national conversation surrounding freedom of speech, race and equality. “We took the opportunity to pray for our country and for the men and women in this country during that time.” DeValve said in a post-game interview. #Browns TE Seth DeValve said players wanted to use anthem to “pray for our country.” pic.twitter.com/3twqsbduaq — Tom Withers (@twithersAP) August 22, 2017 But many media outlets praised DeValve at first for being the first white person to take part in the demonstration, ignoring the fact that soccer player  Megan Rapinoe was the first person to do so last year. In an open letter she wrote for Very Smart Brothas on The Root, Erica said that although she is proud of her husband for taking a stand, she wants to make sure the conversation stays focused on Black lives and Black liberation. From her piece on VSB: “While I understand (and am deeply proud) that Seth is the first white NFL player to kneel during a demonstration like this (on Sept. 4, 2016, Megan Rapinoe, a U.S. women’s soccer player, was the first white professional athlete to do so), I would like to push back against some of the attention he’s been getting that portrays him as some sort of white savior to a movement that was started and has been carried on by black football players for about a year now.” “We should not see Seth’s participation as legitimizing this movement. Rather, he chose to be an ally of his black teammates. To center the focus of Monday’s demonstration solely on Seth is to distract from what our real focus should be: listening to the experiences and the voices of the black people who are using their platforms to continue to bring the issue of racism in the U.S. to the forefront. Seth, as a white individual, never has and never will truly have to feel the weight and burden of racial discrimination and racial oppression. No white person does or will. But all white people should care and take a stand against its prevalence in this country,” she wrote.  Read the full piece here . Pregnant Woman Fired For Taking Too Many Bathroom Breaks on the Job

Dawn Steckmann, a Portland, Oregon, woman, claims she was recently fired for taking too many bathroom breaks on the job while carrying her second child. The former technician at Maxim Integrated Products is filing a gender and discrimination lawsuit against the Beaverton, Ore., cell phone chip manufacturer. She says her bosses never told her she had to clock out before using the restroom, and you won’t believe the grounds she says higher-ups used to can her: Her lawsuit claims one supervisor told her she had been fired for stealing because “not clocking out to use the restroom is stealing from the company.” While that seems crazy, she said the same boss informed her that she could’ve just as easily been “watching a movie” during bathroom breaks. According to the lawsuit, Steckmann worked at the company for 10 years, and claims she discussed this with her supervisor during her first pregnancy. In 2011, she openly said that she needed more frequent bathroom breaks and asked if she needed to clock out. Her boss told her not to bother, she says. Even before she was fired, Steckmann complained that her supervisor favored male employees, assigning the best tasks to them and using less discipline. When she told her supervisor in January 2013 she was pregnant for the second time, he “appeared unhappy with the news,” the lawsuit stated. Because of a bladder condition stemming from her first pregnancy, she needed to relieve herself even more often during her second, and more quickly. “[Steckmann’s] bladder issues were so severe that she would not even have had time to clock out to use the restroom without an accident,” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit was filed last month in Multnomah County. Steckmann is seeking $400,000 in damages, and an attorney for the company did not comment. What do you think? Does she have a case? Discuss.

Hugh Jackman KOs George Clooney At Box Office

‘Real Steel’ was victor at the weekend box office, with ‘Ides of March’ at #2. By Ryan J. Downey Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly in “Real Steel” Photo: DreamWorks “Real Steel” was the clear victor at the box office this weekend. The action-packed robot-boxing movie took in $27.3 million, according to studio estimates, which easily bested the rest of the flicks in theaters, both new and old. Of course, the contest wasn’t exactly along the lines of George Foreman vs. Muhammad Ali. Industry watchers long suspected the mass audience appeal of “Real Steel” to beat the suspenseful nature of George Clooney ‘s “The Ides of March.” “Real Steel” features Hugh Jackman opposite Dakota Goyo , a generally relatable 11-year-old. It features effects-heavy action, a family story and big thrills aimed at a broad audience. It was also executive-produced by Steven Spielberg . DreamWorks will undoubtedly continue to campaign hard for “Real Steel,” considering its estimated $110 million budget. The weekend’s #2 movie, “The Ides of March,” is a dramatic tale of political intrigue aimed for a more discerning, grown-up audience. “Ides” was directed and co-written by George Clooney, who also stars. It debuted with $10.4 million. Clooney’s face is split on the poster with co-star Ryan Gosling , whose “Drive” opened with $11.3 million in August by comparison. Last weekend’s #1 movie, “Dolphin Tale,” slid gracefully to #3 with $9.2 million for a $49.1 million total — a decline of just 34 percent. Brad Pitt’s “Moneyball” took in $7.5 million to land at #4 with a $49.3 million total. The Joseph Gordon-Levitt/ Seth Rogen dramedy “50/50” was #5, with $5.5 million in its second weekend of release. The low-budget picture has made $17.3 million playing in roughly two-thirds the number of theaters as “Real Steel.” “The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence” took $54,000 in just 18 theaters in its debut. Next weekend’s new releases include a pair of blasts from the past: the remake of “Footloose” and the remake-turned-prequel “The Thing.” They’ll open alongside a handful of smaller pictures with big stars including “Fireflies in the Garden” (Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds), “Trespass” (Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman), “Father of Invention” (Kevin Spacey) and “Texas Killing Fields” (Sam Worthington). “The Big Year,” which stars Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin, debuts as well. Check out everything we’ve got on “Real Steel” and “The Ides of March.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
