My Favorite Movies of 2010

I was hesitant to make a top 10 movie list this year because, really, who cares what I have to say? But then I started thinking, Yeah… who cares what I have to say? Without the title of “movie critic,” I can just choose whatever movies I want — the ones that I truly enjoyed the most — as opposed to movies that I know are technically great or that any film fan should definitely see, but may not be as emotionally pleasing to my Big 12-school-educated mind. I know that a “favorite movie list” from an Internet writer my age is supposed to include Inception and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World , it’s almost blasphemy for it not to, but mine doesn’t.

‘Milky Mook’ Justin Long Compliments Movieline’s Own Michelle Orange on Her Going the Distance Pan

Do you remember reading Movieline’s scathing review of Drew Barrymore’s recent box office disappointment, Going the Distance ? Well, Barrymore’s costar Justin Long sure does, and he recited a particularly brutal excerpt from memory during yesterday’s episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon after tipping his hat to Movieline critic Michelle Orange.

Friday Box Office: Evil Eyes Number One

Milla Jovovich’s latest installment of shooting at zombies very, very slowly racked up another win as Resident Evil 3D easily dominated a sleepy box office. The dapper gents of Takers and the well-armed hit men of The American tussled over the number two slot while horny travelers and angry Mexicans filled out the rest of the top five. Your Friday Box Office is here.

Weekend Forecast: Can Machete Out-Hack Drew Barrymore at the Box Office?

O, Labor Day, you lazy long weekend, you musty farewell. And seriously, summer: Good riddance. The holiday frame offers up a storm-shattering tandem of films well worth your time, money and consideration after a gruesome August, as well as one stinker to help balance out the cosmos. (Or something. I don’t know why it exists, to be honest.) Grab a lawn chair, pop open a beer, and meet me after the jump to talk it over.

REVIEW: You’ll Hate Going the Distance Long Before You Relate to It

I stand before you the apparent target market for Going the Distance , the latest ‘x’ in the “con” column of Drew Barrymore’s exasperating career ledger. After a recent expedition into critically acclaimed territory that produced her directing debut Whip It and a first Golden Globe for her performance as Little Edie Bouvier in Gray Gardens , she has returned to the populous, brain-bashing shoals of romantic comedy. Similar to He’s Just Not That Into You , which was based on a bestselling dating guide that seemed to capture the imagination of budding Cathy’s everywhere, Going the Distance hopes to skate by on its thin blade of cultural cachet. Having declared fantasy passé, certain rom-com scientists are exploring the lure not of engaging escapism but tame, tranquilizing relatability . It’s a concept so edgy my spellchecker is rejecting it. But it’s a word, spellchecker. It’s also now a selling edge for the same old crappy motion picture.

SHOCKER: Avatar Returning to Theaters in August with New Footage

OK, maybe not much of a shocker: After Avatar was released on a flimsy and featureless DVD back in April with promises of a more lavish, extended edition this fall, one could only presume that meant a theatrical return to Pandora was in the cards for late summer. And lo and behold, Fox has announced that the highest grossing movie of all-time will add even more money to its coffers when Avatar returns to theaters Aug. 27 with eight minutes of new footage. So which movies opening that weekend will stand in James Cameron’s way and prevent Avatar from reaching No. 1 at the box office for an eighth time since December?
