Britney Spears Dead? Hoax Alleges Icon’s Demise, Pop Star Tweets Selfies

As if 2016 couldn’t get any worse, a high-profile cyber attacker hijacked Sony’s music page and declared Britney Spears dead yesterday. Fortunately, it was a hoax. Britney is a-o-k. Twitter freaked out Monday morning when the official Sony Music Global page posted a tweet that claimed Britney “is dead by accident.” “We will tell you more soon,” they said. A follow-up tweet seemed to pay tribute to Spears’ life (1981-2016). Minutes later, a sequence of new tweets confirmed that she lives. OurMine Security said that Sony’s account had been compromised and the pop music icon, who just turned 35, is not a 2016 victim. Weirdly, OurMine reportedly hacked Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sundar Pichai recently, warning they were just “testing your security.” OurMine reportedly hacked Netflix too. The hacking of Sony is nothing new … nor is the proliferation of fake news. Bottom line, though, is that Britney Spears remains unharmed. Representatives for the singer confirmed this, despite false reports to the contrary, which circulated and fooled many people Monday. Spears fans the world over were alarmed as tweets from not just Sony, but other verified accounts appeared to announce her death. “Rest in peace, Britney Spears,” read an actual tweet from no less than Bob Dylan’s verified account; Bob apparently is a fan of Britney? That tweet from Dylan and many others like it were deleted shortly after the hoax was debunked and they realized they’d been had. “I assume their account has been hacked,” Adam Leber, Spears’ longtime manager, told CNN later on Monday. “I haven’t spoken to anyone.” “I am certain their account was hacked. Britney is fine and well,” he assured the star’s fans, noting that this was a first, even for her. “There have been a few Internet clowns over the years who have made similar claims about her death, but never the official Sony Music Twitter.” Britney personally took to Twitter, writing simply: “Don’t underestimate the power of Charlie’s.” Britney included the following collage: Silver lining of death hoaxes? New selfies from Brit! Spears is no stranger to outrageous rumors and theories over the years, but Sony has its own history with hackers too, as we know. We’re gonna blame Putin. Kidding/not kidding. Long before hacking became so widespread, the emails of top executives were famously hijacked in 2014, leading to several controversies. The Spears fake-out is surprising and yet not. It comes on the heels of some very real celebrity deaths (George Michael) and health crises (Carrie Fisher) over the past week alone. With the way this incredibly, often tragic year has gone, you could almost believe that something like this would happen in the waning days. Fortunately, it was just another hoax. Phew. View Slideshow: 21 Hottest Britney Spears Photos of ALL TIME When she’s not being fake-killed off by hackers, Britney has kept a relatively low profile of late, but is still going strong in life and work. And love, according to multiple recent reports. She’s started dating  Sam Ashgari , who was a dancer in Britney and Tinashe’s hot “Slumber Party” video, and is performing in Vegas. Are they having slumber parties for two yet?! A source close to the couple says they’re in the “getting-to-know-you” stage of their relationship, having gone on three dates this far.  He’s certainly glad she’ll live to see a fourth. Many a celebrity has been done in by Twitter, Facebook or other nefarious Internet hoax-making, but the Sony Twitter is quite unusual. Here’s a look back at other famous “victims” we’ve covered on THG, all of whom are mercifully alive, well and entertaining us presently: View Slideshow: 25 Times the Internet Killed Off a Celebrity

We Still Coming: Viral Wedding Text Exposed as Hoax, But Real Story is Almost as Good

The viral story of a wedding invite a bride accidentally texted to a stranger who showed up anyway to crash the thing has been revealed as a hoax. The wedding photo is real and the real story behind it is pretty darn good, though. This Instagram text exchange between newlywed “Kristen” and a stranger who told the bride, “We still coming,” was made up by some random web user. That user based on this real photo of the wedding party with their new friends that was posted to Reddit by the newlyweds, Ian and Amy Hicks. “The text is pretty funny. The #westillcoming? That’s hilarious,” Ian said. “But this is really such a great story, because it’s true .” “It happened to us.” The Hicks’ wedding took place in June at the Colony Club in Detroit, after which the duo drove around the city in an antique trolley for photos. Photographer Adam Sparkes suggested they stop by the abandoned Michigan Central Station for a few shots, and there, they met rap group 7262. Filming a new music video, complete with custom Monte Carlos. “Amy and I go off to the side and get a few pictures,” Ian recalls. “Before I can even turn around my groomsmen are already over there talking to the guys. So our photographer was like, ‘All right, let’s go over there.'” The rappers clapped for the happy couple when they came over and joined the pair for pictures, then guys of 7262 invited the wedding party to dance. Ian, Amy and their guests obliged, dancing to their song “Anthem.” The couple said the photo first went viral after someone pulled the shot from Ian’s Facebook page and posted it to Reddit, but it gets weirder still. “My little brother, one of the groomsman … one of the rappers got his number a month later and was like, ‘Hey, we’re posting the video to YouTube today,'” Amy said. “We didn’t even know that they were filming us.” Apparently, the wedding group’s moves wmade the final cut. The bridal party is shown getting down in the (NSFW) “Anthem” video from 7262’s Jojinoo and Mojo: 7262 – Anthem How’s that for a wedding story you’ll never forget? It’s gotta be pretty high up there, although there have been others over the years that give even Ian, Amy and the guys from 7626 a run for their money. Fake Ryan Gosling Facebook Page Claims Actor Adopts Baby, Gets 930,000 Likes on Bogus Post

Women across the world already prone to swooning over Ryan Gosling were given another amazing reason to do so this weekend. Too bad it wasn’t real. On Saturday, a fake Facebook page claiming to be the actor’s official page posted an emotional missive accompanied by a photo of him with a baby. The Facebook page is not verified, but has 169,000 likes … and 930,000 more likes on the Father’s Day post, with many fans praising the actor’s “decision.” What was that non-decision not made by Gosling, you ask? “This father’s day, I’ve decided to tell the story of how I became a father,” the post began. “This little guy was only 9 months old when I became his dad.” “His mom and I were great friends before she passed away from cancer. I promised her, I’d always look after him. So, I had decided to step up and become his dad.” “He brought me so much joy. He was my everything. 1 year after the adoption, his biological father wanted him. Of course, I put up a fight, but he won.” “That 1 year of being his father taught me how to love unconditionally. We have to stop and be thankful for our children and children should stop and be thankful for their parents.” “What I truly learned most of all is, every child needs love.” Wow. As if Ryan Gosling weren’t dreamy enough right? “Reason 90636 why you’re the most perfect man on the planet!” one fan gushed, unaware that this was an utter fabrication (although a moving one). “Omg you are utterly AMAZING!” another declared. The post linked to a site to purchase a T-shirt that reads “Young Wild and Free,” with proceeds going to the Orphanage Home Foundation (which does not exist). Buying said t-shirt also enters you into a raffle to spend the day with Ryan Gosling, with the small caveat that Ryan Gosling will not be attending. But he sure is good-looking and inspiring, isn’t he? 17 Hottest Photos of Ryan Gosling 1. Crazy Stupid Love Ryan Gosling showed so crazy stupid abs for Crazy Stupid Love. Justin Bieber Protest in Atlanta: All a Hoax!

Thousands of people want  Justin Bieber deported . Based on a petition that has made it all the way to the White House, this is a fact. But it turns out that not many people in Buckhead, Georgia care if the singer moves into their neighborhood. With Bieber reportedly considering a mansion in the area, a Facebook posting went up last week that urged residents to protest the move because the artist’s presence would be “bad for children.” The protestors who actually showed up, however? They were interns of Rock 100.5’s The Regular Guys Show, which was behind this hoax – and the “Buckhead Neighborhood Coalition” – the entire time. Yup, they got us. “We just sent tweets out, and that’s it – just social media,” host Steve Rickman tells E! News. “We did not send press releases or anything like that to our local affiliates. We’re really not trying to, you know, burn everybody – we’re just doing something fun.” The prank drew attention from CNN, BBC News and TMZ, all of whom took it seriously. Atlanta Residents Protest Justin Bieber “It spun completely [out of control]…We’re blown away,” Rickman said. “It’s a home run when you’re a morning radio show.” But not when you’re the artist at the center of the hoax. “I guess I’m an easy target for some. I’m still human,” Bieber Tweeted in response. “I will continue to meet hate with love. It’s all about the music. Much love.” And it’s still worth asking: Would you want Justin Bieber as a neighbor?   Yes, he’s so dreamy! No, that guy sucks! Only if he shares his weed View Poll »

Paris Hilton Slams Nelson Mandela Hoax, Bogus "I Have a Dream" Twitter Reaction

Former celebrity Paris Hilton was on the receiving end of a Twitter hoax Thursday involving “her” supposed reaction to the death of Nelson Mandela. “Paris” did not sound smart in her alleged Tweet, posted after Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95, and actual Paris is not happy about it whatsoever. “RIP Nelson Mandela,” the Photoshopped tweet purportedly from Hilton read. “Your ‘I Have A Dream’ speech was so inspiring. An amazing man.” That’s right, Hilton was supposedly so brick stupid that she confused Mandela with Martin Luther King Jr., or so the fake tweet would have you believe. Which more than a few people did … which isn’t all that surprising, considering the proliferation of hoaxes on Twitter, and the fact that it’s Paris Hilton. NOTE: Paris is a former celebrity who was like the Kim Kardashian of 2003-2007. The two were even friends, and their “career paths” are similar. You could say the Paris Hilton sex tape was the Kim Kardashian sex tape before the Kim Kardashian sex tape was the Kim Kardashian sex tape. In any case, a quick check of Hilton’s verified account at the time the hoax started revealed she was on a plane to Miami, and did not send the Tweet. The socialite and reality star was quick to re-tweet items debunking the hoax, which according to reports, came from another account , not hers. “Just landed & heard the sad new[s] about Nelson Mandela,” real Paris wrote. “He was a true Hero & the world is a better place because of him. May he rest in peace.” Eleven minutes later, she let loose on the Twitter hoax: “Whoever made that stupid fake tweet lacks respect to the loss the world is mourning right now.” “Same goes for all the blogs who ran with it.” In the wee hours Friday morning, Hilton was still ticked off, tweeting, “I’m so sick of people lying about me & using my name . Please get a life & stop talking about mine.” “It’s beyond. #URPathetic #GetYourOwnLife” Seriously … the girl makes a valid point. Who still talks about Paris Hilton these days? What is this, 2007? Isn’t Miley Cyrus Twerking somewhere?

Celine Dion Dead? Hoax Does Not Sit Well With Singer

A number of Facebook posts suggesting that Celine Dion is dead, having been killed in a sudden and tragic accident, are making the online rounds. They are not true. And she is not happy about it. The Canadian singer said that the death rumors make her “a little mad” (this isn’t the first time), mostly because of the impact they have on her family. “Sometimes it’s freaky because I have to call my family about it,” she said. “The thing that worries me is my mom. It makes me a little mad – she’s 86 years old.” “I’m not on the phone telling her I’m OK four seconds after it’s on the news… it doesn’t matter what they say, the impact it has on your family is very real.” “I was celebrating the birthday of my twins in Montreal and I was getting these phone calls saying that there was stuff on Facebook that I was dead.” No one “Loved Her Back to Life.” Celine has never been deceased. Dion clarified after the fact that such death hoaxes make her “stay away from that side of things even more,” before adding: “But I’m glad I’m not dead!” One story claimed that she had died in a car crash, while another stated it was a plane crash. Neither is true. Nor was it the first time this has occurred. “Many years ago I [apparently] killed myself in my own garage,” she recalled of hoaxes past. “Don’t ask me why I don’t want to be a part of the showbiz industry!” Guess her heart will go on, because that’s just the way it is (sorry). Charlie Hunnam: NOT Quitting Fifty Shades of Grey Movie!

Rumors that Charlie Hunnam is quitting the Fifty Shades of Grey movie have surfaced in recent days. The alleged reason? The widespread fan discontent. While that is undeniably the reason for the rumors themselves – you wouldn’t hear such rumors over The Vampire Diaries ‘ Ian Somerhalder – it’s untrue. Some are even brainstorming who should play Christian Grey if Hunnam walks. While absurd, that does tell you a lot about how his casting was received. Like it or not, though, Hunnam and Dakota Johnson will star in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. He was hanging with E.L. James only a few days ago. The book’s author tweeted, “Guess who” alongside a photo of Charlie’s forearm tattoo that his character, Jax Teller, wears on FX’s Sons of Anarchy . Obviously, E.L. and Charlie aren’t sitting around taking Twitpics if he isn’t very much on board with the film. Sorry to burst your bubble, Matt Bomer fans. In fact, rather than discord among the Fifty Shades braintrust, they’re protecting their investment. Hunnam has reportedly been given a team of bodyguards. Apparently they don’t want anyone messing up that face … or trying to take him out in hopes of Robert Pattinson being installed in his 50 Shades place. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo: Behind the Manti Te’o Girlfriend Hoax?

With Manti Te’o expected to speak later today and address the girlfriend hoax that has left a country baffled, let’s turn our attention for a moment over to Ronaiah Tuiasosopo . A 22-year old whose relatives include a pair of former NFL players, Tuiasosopo played high school football in California and is reportedly a huge fan of USC. Many believe he has either been working with Te’o on this cover-up or he’s the “Catfish” behind the scam and has been posing as Lennay Kekua for years in order to punish Te’o for choosing Notre Dame over USC. The original Deadspin article that broke this hoax lists Tuiasosopo as the individual who obtained the photo that was believed to be Lennay, the one associated with her Twitter and Facebook accounts (above). TMZ, meanwhile, has posted a long article that details the story of a Notre Dame fan who thought she was interacting online for weeks with Lennay’s sister – but when she arranged to meet the sibling at a football game, Tuiasosopo showed up instead. Ronaiah “made it seem as if he was a member of Kekua’s family,” the TMZ report reads, with that site’s source providing it with the phone number she was given to call Lennay’s sister. It is registered to a man named Titus Tuiasosopo, Ronaiah’s dad. Tuiasosopo has not spoken about his alleged connection to the hoax yet, but the question at this point doesn’t seem to be whether or not he was involved. Merely whether or not he was working with or against Manti Te’o.

Emblem3 Reacts to X Factor Elimination, Promises "Badass Music"

Emblem3 is no longer in the running for a $5 million grand prize, following last night’s X Factor elimination . But you wouldn’t know it talking to group members Wesley Stromberg, Keaton Stromberg and Drew Chadwick. “Honestly, I only feel happy right now,” Wesley told reporters after the show. “We get to go and make some badass music right now and not be under any restrictions.” Chadwick was equally enthused: “Bottom line is we had the dopest experience. We got everything we really wanted out of this competition, which was a solid international fan base, we expanded our comfort zone by stepping out of it, we learned how to do interviews. It was like training, like music industry on Miracle-Gro. “We just learned a lot and now it’s over and we’re about to go do it for real. We built the foundation we entered the competition to build.” He also chimed in on L.A. Reid leaving the show: “I think L.A. Reid is more of a creative, behind the scenes production type of dude. Reality TV is more about the TV show and producing the television show more than the music. Me and him have a lot in common that sense.” As for who Chadwick thinks should take home the title? “Carly is 13 years old, she’s an amazing singer, she’s going to be doing great things with the talent she’s been given. [ Tate Stevens ] is a little bit older. “He’s amazing, he’s been playing music for a long time, he’s a family man, he has a great heart, he has pure intentions, he’s a good guy. I feel like he really deserves this. He needs a break. I love Tate. I love Carly and I love Fifth harmony too, but I think he’s the most deserving.” Very kind words all around. What do you think of Emblem3’s elimination? Was it deserved?   Yes, but what a season! No, it should have been Carly Rose! No, it should have been Tate! No, it should have been Fifth Harmony! Kate Middleton Hoax Suicide: Did Hospital Criticism Prompt Nurse’s Death?

The nurse in the Kate Middleton hoax may have hanged herself in part because the hospital came down on her very hard after falling for the infamous prank call. TMZ, via the Daily Mail, claims that in one of her three suicide notes , Jacintha Saldanha was critical of the London hospital for the treatment she received. The story does not explicitly state that this treatment is connected to the hoax. It appears to be the case, however, given one of the other suicide notes, which describes how she tried to cope with the fallout due to the Kate Middleton prank call . The story has raised a new round of questions surrounding the tragic case, which unraveled last week after Kate was hospitalized with acute morning sickness. The parties responsible for the prank played a role in the nurse’s death – and are keenly aware of and devastated by that fact – but there are other factors to consider. Did her superiors come down on her hard after the hoax, in which two Sydney DJs impersonated the Queen and Prince Charles, inquiring about Kate’s health? Could their reaction have impacted or changed the events that followed? A hospital spokesperson claims hospital management was supportive of Saldanha, but they are not privy to what Jacintha Saldanha wrote in the notes. As for the third note, the report claims the nurse, a married mother of two, laid out plans for her funeral. She then killes herself, reportedly via hanging. She was 46.
