Serena Williams’ Postpartum Issues Are A Lesson In Healing After Giving Birth

Source: Bryan Bedder / Getty Celebrity women like Serena Williams, Beyonce, Chrissy Teigen, Cardi B and Tia Mowry are finally keeping it real about how hard pregnancy and postpartum life can be for a lot of women. Imagine being in control of yourself your entire life then suddenly, nothing is how you had expected. You don’t feel like yourself or think like yourself. It’s like an out-of-body experience. Add the fact that you are responsible for another little life, and that is a recipe for a breakdown. Why didn’t our mother’s warn us? I identify with Serena Williams the most because she has always been a friend in my head plus, I’m also an athlete. I ran track as a child, grew up dancing with a performance troupe, danced all the way to adulthood, and also picked up pole dancing and aerial hoop habits. It’s obviously not tennis and I’m definitely no Serena Williams, but I was fit and dexterous before pregnancy, and I thought bouncing back would be a breeze because I had a smooth pregnancy through which I still worked out without complications. I seriously thought I’d be able to get back to my regularly scheduled program in terms of work, my body bouncing back, and balancing the new life I was responsible for with everything else in 6-weeks post birth because I was good at planning and executing my goals. It worked with my career and it worked with my hobbies, so why not my life as a working mom? That was extremely naive, but in a world where overachieving is the thing to do to the point where we sometimes get unrealistic and don’t allow room for going with the flow, I just didn’t create space in my brain for anything less than optimal results right away. My ego was dealt a devastating blow after attempting to work out following my 6-week doctor clearance was struggle city. My abdomen still felt like jelly and my joints were freakishly unstable. How could I not do my usual HIIT workout? It was all I knew. What about muscle memory? How could my body betray me like this? But it did and I was furious. I couldn’t resume working out the way I wanted to and developed back pain serious enough to have to visit a chiropractor multiple times. I was forced to take my time easing back into it, which was depressing. I started with lightweight workouts geared toward postpartum women , but it wasn’t until 6 months postpartum that I finally felt comfortable enough to get back into the dance classes, pilates, and HIIT that I loved and I still had to modify certain moves at times. In addition to all of the above, I still had career goals that I planned to accomplish but it took me months to mentally get back into a space where I wanted to think about work, and actually figured out a new rhythm with my baby. I’m two years postpartum, and while I am psychologically okay most of the time, my body is just now starting to feel like it can do the things that it used to. I’m at 90% and I don’t know that the extra 10% will ever come. I’m still getting used to my new normal. I still feel guilty about having ambitions outside of family, but at the same time, while I love my daughter, I understand that I also need to cultivate my career and personal interests in order to feel sane. In hindsight, I beat myself up for things I couldn’t control during a time when it’s important to take it easy. Sure, women have been having babies since forever, which is why people downplay the severity of giving birth and take the healing process for granted, but it’s always a big deal. Your body has gone through a major shift that can be traumatic in some cases (broken pelvis, weak pelvic floor, etc), and healing time varies. A lot of us try to do the most too fast like it’s a competition to see who can bounce back the fastest and we really just need to sit down, relax and nourish our bodies and spirits as much as we can because anything else does more harm than good. Postpartum life has a way of humbling you and Serena Williams is proof. We noticed that she hadn’t been playing tennis as fiercely as we knew she could and she eventually pulled out of the Rogers Cup, which wasn’t a surprise. If you read her now blown up  Instagram post  about how she has been feeling, then you understand what she’s going through. It’s hard for ambitious moms to take a break, but what matters most is that she listened to her body, her intuition, and her mom tribe, and did what was best for herself and family. She’ll be back when she’s really ready and there’s no time that anyone can put on it. The body knows and communicates what it needs, and patience is all that is necessary. A rare sect of women may actually be able to get back to business in a week or two, some women have no choice but to jump back into the fray immediately (because maternity leave in the United States is trash), but most women aren’t ready to resume daily activities and unfortunately, that’s something that we don’t talk about enough or lie about too often. It’s okay to not feel okay as long as you’re working toward healing (I still need to take my own advice on that) and it’s okay if it doesn’t happen right away. Everyone’s postpartum journey is different, but it’s time for all of us overachievers to surrender to the process as individuals and stop trying to live up to ridiculous standards. Apollo Nida Reunites With Fiancee From Behind Bars

If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from Phaedra Parks’ ex-husband Apollo Nida in a while, then you may be in for a bit of a shock. Back in 2014,  Nida was convicted of fraud charges  and sentenced to eight years in prison. These days, Apollo is behind bars, but he’s not letting the pesky peculiarities of his living arrangement interfere with his social life. To the surprise of many (ya know, because of the whole “being in prison” thing) Nida got engaged  to a woman named Sherien Almufti last year. The news came as a shock, because in addition to the fact that he’s locked up (Have we mentioned that?), Apollo had only been divorced from Phaedra for a few months when he put a ring he made himself on Sherien’s finger . (We suppose “I’m in prison” is a pretty good excuse for not shelling out for a diamond.) The news that Sherien is an aspiring famous person who was promised a spot on The Real Housewives of Atlanta helped to shed some light on the mystery of why she rushed headlong into a relationship with a convict. Sadly, it seems there was more than just Plexiglass coming between Apollo and Sherien, and the couple broke up earlier this year. Maybe it was the forced separation. Maybe Sherien realized that marrying Apollo wouldn’t be her ticket to the A-list, after all. Or maybe she simply got sick of Nida blathering on about his hobbies all the time (shiv-sharpening, ramen based-cookery, hanging posters of decade-appropriate film starlets over the ever-deepening tunnel in the wall of his cell). Whatever the case, Apollo and Sherien called it quits. For about two weeks. Yes, as suddenly as they began their romance, Apollo and Sherien have reconciled. Almufti even celebrated her birthday by visiting Nida in the clink last week: Yes, Sherien and Apollo enjoyed a jailhouse embrace – presumably after assuring the nearest C.O. that they wouldn’t be passing anything to one another. Almufti seemed to briefly address the breakup in her caption for the photo, acknowledging that things “haven’t always been peachy” as of late. “God has blessed me with another year. I am so thankful for every single thing in my life,” she wrote. “Although it hasn’t always been peachy, I wouldn’t trade it for the world! Thank you God for every mistake I have made and for every lesson I have learned. I am stronger today than I was yesterday!” She later praised Nida, hailing him as “an amazing person inside and out,” who will someday get his due. You may now commence being depressed about prison inmates having healthier relationships than you do. Watch The Real Houseives of Atlanta online to relive Apollo’s many ups and downs.

Janet Jackson Gives Birth! At Age 50!

First, the bad news for Janet Jackson: She will not be going on an escapade any time soon. But now the good news for Janet Jackson: That’s because she’s a mother for the first time! At the age of 50! The singer and husband Wissam Al Mana welcomed their first child on Tuesday, January 3, with Jackson’s rep confirming the name and gender of the newborn. “Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana are thrilled to welcome their new son Eissa Al Mana into the world,” reads the simple rep statement, concluding as follows: “Janet had a stress-free healthy delivery and is resting comfortably.” Phew. That’s good to know. It’s a fact that the older a woman is when she gets pregnant, the more likely either she or the baby is to have complications. Jackson and Al Mana (a Qatari businessman) got married in 2012. Despite the artist’s advanced age, speculation about her expecting state started in April when Jackson postponed her Unbreakable World Tour so, telling fans in a video posted to Twitter that she and Al Mana needed to focus on their family Janet Jackson: Pregnant Announcement? “We’re in the second leg of the tour, and there actually has been a sudden change,” she says in the above clip. “I thought it was important that you be the first to know. “My husband and I are planning our family. So I’m going to have to delay the tour.” Fast forward all the way to October and Jackson confirmed the happy news . “We thank God for our blessing,” Janet told People Magazine in an exclusive interview, which included a picture of her and her baby bump. Janet, of course, is the sister of legendary singer Michael Jackson. She spends most of her time in London and is notoriously shy with the press. We would not hold our breath for a tabloid cover baby photo if we were you. But an insider did tell People late last year that Jackson was psyched to become a first-time parent. “She is super excited about her pregnancy and is doing extremely well,” the source said this fall. “She actually feels very good about everything.” Good! We’re so glad to hear it! Please join us in sending along your best wishes, first to Jackson and her expanded family… … and then to the following celebrities, all of whom are expecting kids in 2017. Good luck to everyone! View Slideshow: Stars Expecting Babies in 2017: Who’s Ready to Pop?

Very sad news today out of the reality television world: Dan Kay, a contestant on Survivor: Gabon back in the fall of 2008, died suddently on December 31.  He was 40 years old. The sad news has gone public as a result of a newly-printed obituary from the Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory. Kay worked as a lawyer; hailed from Brookline, New Hampshire; and was born in 1976. He earned a bachelor’s degree from UMass-Amherst and also law degree from Syracuse University. The cause of death is unknown at this time, as the obituary says only that he “died unexpectedly” on the final day of 2016. It notes that Kay’s “desire to be challenged and his quest for adventure lead to his participation on the reality show, Survivor.” Kay was the eighth person voted out of Survivor: Gabon. During his run on the beloved CBS reality show, he described himself as an “athletic kid growing up,” and his obituary lists his hobbies as “running, skiing, listening to music, and attending Crossway Christian Church.” In response to this tragic turn of events, Survivor host Jeff Probst Tweeted the following statement: “I just heard the very sad news about the sudden loss of Dan Kay of Survivor: Gabon. The Survivor family sends our love to Dan’s family.” After he was voted out, Kay told Andy Dehnart  of Reality Blurred that it would be “a little bit shallow if I said [Survivor] changed my life,” but added: “I think it made me appreciate the simplicity of life and what you need.”” Kay is the fourth Survivor cast member to pass away, following the deaths of Jenn Lyon, B.B. Anderson, and Caleb Bankston. He is survived by his two young children, Reese Elizabeth and Jackson “Jax” Russell-Reid, as well as his girlfriend, Jennifer DePietro, mother, Jean-Ann, and sister, Andrea . “More than anything, Dan cherished the time he spent with his two young children, Reese Elizabeth Kay and Jackson “Jax” Russell-Reid Kay,” the obituary reads. “Those who knew Dan best, would agree he was a child at heart.” A memorial will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory in Manchester, New Hampshire. The obituary says that “memorial donations may be made to Crossway Christian Church, 503 Main Dunstable Rd., Nashua, NH 03062, or a charity of your choice.” Here is a video of Dan introducing himself to Survivor viewers prior to taking part in Survivor: Gabon… Dan Kay Introduces Himself to Survivor Fans May he rest in peace.

Alex Trebek to Jeopardy Contestant: You’re a Loser!!!

You don’t troll Alex Trebek and get away with it. A contestant named Buzzy Cohen found this out the hard way back in May of this year. But if/when Alex Trebek trolls YOU?  Well, you suck it up and take it and accept that you’re about to be on the wrong end of a hilarious viral video. Susan Cole just found this out the embarrassing way. On Wednesday night’s episode of Jeopardy, Trebek asked Cole what the “nerdcore” was about, as this was a piece of biographical information she had mentioned to producers. He prefaced his question by saying the concept “doesn’t sound like fun.” C But Cole tried to explain one of her hobbies so that Trebek and viewers at home would have more respect for it. It’s safe to say she failed, however. “It’s people who identify as nerdy, rapping about the things they love,” Cole explained. “Video games, science fiction, having a hard time meeting romantic partners. It’s really catchy and fun.” How did Trebek respond to this description? WATCH AND FIND OUT: Alex Trebek Slams Jeopardy Contestant as a “Loser” HA! How amazing is that? We feel a little bad for Cole, of course. Just look at the expression on her face when Trebek comes right out and calls her a “loser.” But she’s merely the latest in a long line of contestants to feel the icy cold wrath of an Alex Trebek burn. We can’t think of any this overt, but come on. Who can be mad at Alex Trebek? Remember when he rapped The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song? Alex Trebek Raps Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme Song Or when he ran down a hotel hallway naked and t ore his Achilles while apprehending a criminal ? Trebek is a global treasure. Hopefully Cole just considers herself lucky for even sharing the same stage as Trebek. Oh, and she also won $20,600 on the episode. So she ended the evening as a winner, even if she’ll always be a loser in the game show host’s book. That’s not too shabby. View Slideshow: 26 Great Moments in Game Show History

Joe Giudice: Slapped With $10K Fine For Using Fake Driver’s License

The drama that occurs on any episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey can’t hold a candle to the real life drama of Joe and Teresa Giudice. The Real Housewives of Atlanta stars have faced countless legal issues in recent months, resulting in prison time for both Joe and Teresa. This time, Joe found himself in the hot seat again for using a fake driver’s license, and he pleaded guilty in a New Jersey courtroom this afternoon. Even though he admitted he is guilty, he asked for sympathy from the judge because he is “a real man” for confessing to the crime. Tom Murro, an eyewitness, states, “Joe snuck into the Passaic County New Jersey courthouse back door for today’s fictitious license sentencing wearing a green shirt, sunglasses, suit, flanked on both sides by bodyguards.” Murro adds: “This is the first time I’ve ever seen him wear a suit to this courtroom, he usually wears jeans and a blazer.” Joe is expected to begin his 41-month prison sentence upon wife Teresa Giudice ‘s release from federal prison next year. Until then, Joe is sentenced to house arrest, where he is taking care of his four daughters. Giudice must have cabin fever. He asked the judge for permission to “move his vehicles around in the driveway.” The judge denied his request. Ultimately, the judge slammed Joe Giudice with a $10,000 fine. His lawyer tried to argue the Giudice is “destitute” and couldn’t pay the fine. But consistent with the transparency of the Giudices’ financial history, that might not be true. Giudice was recently compensated $75,000 for photos and an interview in a weekly tabloid and on celebrity news show Extra. Because of that hefty pay check, the judge refused to lower the fine. In July 2013, Joe and Teresa were charged with fraud in a 39-count indictment. Their legal issues were the subject of speculation and chatter both on the reality show and in the media. Things don’t seem to be getting better. 13 Teresa Giudice GIFs That Should Worry Her Fellow Inmates 1. Table Flipping Fiend View Photo Teresa Giudice is not gonna take any crap.
