Exclusive: Brian Tyree Henry Talks “Child’s Play,” FINALLY Meeting Rihanna, “Atlanta” Season 3, His Morehouse Experience & More!

Source: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images Exclusive Brian Tyree Henry Interview Brian Tyree Henry isn’t a rapper but he plays one on TV–a very relatable and refreshingly complex rapper with a burgeoning career who steals scene after scene (after scene) on critically-acclaimed hit show “Atlanta.” And that’s only one of several power moves for the Emmy AND Tony-nominated North Carolina native currently having an enviable Hollywood run that started with Oscar-worthy masterpiece “If Beale Street Could Talk,” continued with Oscar-winning dazzler “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” and carried over into 2019 with several eye-catching roles headlined by “ Joker ” and… “Child’s Play???” Yep, a next-level Chucky movie that we couldn’t wait to ask him about during the “Child’s Play” press day where we talked (and laughed) about everything from killer doll nostalgia to Black folks in Horror movies to Rihanna in our fave interview of 2019. Let’s get into “Child’s Play”–what were your first thoughts when you realized you were playing a cop in a Chucky movie? “Actually when I got the script it didn’t say “Child’s Play” on it… so I started reading it and the story was pretty damn good. It was a really cool read. And then I saw the name Chucky and I was like ‘Yo…nahhh, there’s no way..’ because I’m like a Horror movie freak–I LOVE Horror movies, it’s my favorite genre and when I got to Chucky I was like ‘Oh sh*t, this has gotta be the new Chucky’ so then I looked at my character and was like ‘oh wait, hold up, this character is actually really brave because, you know , being Black in a Horror movie they don’t really give us good characters–we’re the first people to get killed in the first three minutes of the movie… But in this movie my character Detective Mike Norris is very smart, very charismatic, is really humorous, and literally the relationship he had with his mom, and his relationship with Andy were very important to me and so I was like ‘ok cool, there’s actually a character here’ *laughs* it was something that really attracted me to it. And at the end of the day, I remember when “Child’s Play’ came out in 1988 when I was 6-years-old.. I literally remember the Christmas it came out and, at the time, there was this doll called “My Buddy” and people were going into the store and fighting over these things, man, and it was on the news and I was just like ‘I’m never gonna get one of these dolls’ and as soon as this movie came out everyone threw them away so all that consumerism you were going through to get this doll, once this movie came out it shut the doll’s sales down… and that’s kinda why I like Horror movies because there really is a commentary on the social dynamics we live in.. It really turns the mirror on you to make you confront the things we’re actually afraid of in our real lives and that’s us as a society sometimes. So once I saw this was coming my way I jumped at it because I’ve always been a huge fan of this franchise and Chucky was such a part of my life growing up and I really just liked the retelling of the story they were doing and was like ‘this is actually really fresh and really relevant to today’ because instead of it being a serial killer dropped into a doll as it used to be.. this is like an artificial intelligence… it really is programmed to know everything about your life–like, everything –there’s an upgrade you can download and that’s way more terrifying–that, to me, is way more terrifying that there’s this doll that has access to your entire life. It’s still learning and growing–you’re gonna find yourself actually caring about Chucky–I’m not gon’ lie–I was surprised.. I was like ‘I actually like this dude, I really want him to win out here’ and I really just thought that was fun. It’s been so long since we’ve had a fun Horror movie. That was one of my favorite experiences about going to the Horror movies where I grew up is like, you know, if we’re in a theater full of Black people watching a Horror movie, we are gonna talk sh*t. We’re gonna say how we feel *laughs* and when I saw this I was like ‘Oh my God, this is a callback to one of those movies where you have to have that commentary. You have to clap and celebrate–it’s fun! And I was just really happy to be apart of something like that because that’s kinda what I knew and I’m a big nerd when it comes to this so… it was like me being a kid in a candy store” We realized the legendary Mark Hamill (who played “Luke Skywalker” in the “Star Wars” saga and voiced the Joker in “Batman: The Animated Series”) was voicing Chucky and were like ‘Whoa WHOAAA’ so what was that like for you–a big nerd? “Everything I’ve been doing in my career, honestly, is my inner-nerd just losing its mind and I think that’s why I take the things that I do because I think about myself being that 13-year-old kid at my locker and thinking about what kinda pictures I would’ve taped on the inside of my locker–all of the things I’ve done so far would’ve been in my locker *laughs* so having “Child’s Play” be that other little thing–that other little piece, right there–is great and then Mark Hamill, man, I’m gonna tell you something: the emotion that he brings to Chucky and the wonder he brings to Chucky and the sinisterness he brings to Chucky is really unbelievable and I think that’s why you feel for Chucky the way you do because of him” You got Joker, you got this, you had Spider-man [Into The Spider-Verse]–did you see yourself getting into your lane so fast in your career? No! I still try to act like I don’t see that because I don’t ever want it to take away that kind of joy, that kind of wonderment of what I do. It makes me very happy and I don’t ever wanna get to a place where I’m just like ‘Ohh, you know, tick that box, tick that box, tick that box, because there’s an endless array of boxes to tick for me” How did your experience at an HBCU—Morehouse College–shape your journey (and perspective) in Hollywood? I think that–not just Morehouse in it of itself–but the city of Atlanta shaped that for me because I moved there when I was 18 and I didn’t really start getting into theatre arts until my second semester sophomore year but it was something I’ve always done even in high school I was doing speech and debate and it was always an escape for me because the plays I was told to read or the plays we were given as assignments never had characters that reflected people who looked like me. You could give me Chekhov all day, you could give me Henrik Ibsen all day, but nothing is saying I could be this young dude in Russia so, for me, it was an escape. It was fun to play these parts and run around pretending to be these men in society I was told I’ll never be because of where I’m from and because I’m Black. So, at the end of the day, when I got to Morehouse here I am looking to my left and to my right seeing other people who have the same passion as I do but then I’m also in a city where I’m looking to my left and to my right and everyone looks like me and everyone’s excelling in the same way and the city is giving me space to be who the hell I am– Atlanta literally shaped me into the person I am today and it’s because I saw in a place like that endless possibilities for us as Black people–like, endless –are you telling me I can own a store? We all got our own neighborhoods? Like, what do you mean??? So, for me, it kinda revolutionized how I saw my self within this genre and made me feel like there was nothing couldn’t do and then, here I am, in “Child’s Play” playing this detective that you actually give a damn about…that was icing on the cake” We saw you say that Rihanna made you cry and since we’re talking about Atlanta–where would you take Rihanna in the city if yall were hanging out? What would yall do? “OK, alright! I’ve actually got a chance not too long ago to meet Rihanna–I went to the Gold Party… Rihanna came up to me with open arms–she was like ‘I’ve been watching you, I’m so proud of you, thank you for giving Fenty all the love’ because I’m always reppin like ‘Yo, Fenty Beauty is the bomb, everybody needs to support Rihanna’ and as I’m going in for a hug I break her drink–I drop her drink out of her hand–and I was like ‘are you kidding me? How could you do that?’ and with such grace and poise, as Rihanna does, she’s like ‘no-no-no, don’t worry about it, it’s just a drink, what are you drinking?’ AND THEN SHE GOES TO GET HERSELF A DRINK AND ME A DRINK… So then I’m trying not to cry again but it’s that kinda thing–my inner-nerd–like of course, I made her drop her drink but it was still–I learned a lot about myself *laughs* But yea, there’s nothing greater than to see people from your generation killin’ the game. I feel like I’ve gotten to my rise watching her–like, watching us all excel in this way and its just pride, man. It really just makes me proud but I still broke her drink, though” Is there anything you can tell us about Season 3 of Atlanta? “Thaaaat, it will be back next year *laughs* but know that we’ll be coming back for sure” “Child’s Play” in theaters now!

Jussie Smollett May Have Been Assaulted by Someone in "Whiteface," Lawyer Argues

The Jussie Smollett case continues to get crazier and crazier, weirder and weirder. By the minute, it often seems. In the latest hilarious/disturbing/eye-roll-inducing development resulting from this saga, Smollett’s attorney, Tina Glandian, sat across from Savannah Gurthrie on The Today Show Thursday morning. The lawyer did her best to address several inconsistencies with her client’s story, such as the fact that he has claimed from the outset that two white men attacked him early on the morning of January 29. And yet… two African-Americans are the only suspects . They’re Nigerian brothers named Abel and Ola Osundairo and they have multiple connections to Smollett: They worked as extras on Empire. They personally trained Smollett. There are also text messages sent between Smollett and Abel on record, as well as phone calls the day of the supposed attack; a check made out to Abel in the amount of $3,500; and surveillance footage of the brothers purchasing rope and other supplies at a store on the day of the supposed attack. Here’s a photo of the muscular men: So… how does Glandian explain this away? How could Smollett have said two white men beat him up, when it appears to have been two black men he actually knows? “He only saw one of the attackers,” the attorney told Guthrie, adding: “One of them he didn’t see. He saw one through a ski mask. Again, he could not see their body. Everything was covered, and he had a full ski mask on except the area around the eyes.” She continued of what Smollett told the cops: “He did tell police that he… from what we saw, he thought it was pale skin or white or pale skin, was I think what he said. And that was what he… and that’s why he initially did have a hard time.” Abel and Ola have not said anything since the charges against Smollett were dropped . Their lawyer allegedly resigned after they refused to come forward and confirm that Smollett hired them to stage the attack. On Today, meanwhile, Glandian offered up another incredible defense for why her client told police he was assaulted by Caucasians. “Well, you know, I mean, I think there’s – obviously, you can disguise that,” she said of the brothers’ race. “You can put makeup on.” Shen then pointed to a YouTube video from 2016 in which Abel Osundairo puts on white makeup to perform the Joker monologue. Here is a still image of the suspect in whiteface from that footage: “I think police had minimal investigation in this case, it took me only five minutes to Google,” said the attorney. “You know, I was looking up the brothers, and one of the videos that showed up actually was of the brothers in whiteface doing a joker monologue with white makeup on him. “So, it’s not – it’s not implausible.” Okay. We guess. From there, Guthrie asked why Smollett did not recognize the Osundairos’ voices after allegedly having hung up the phone with them just moments earlier, based on official record, to which Glandian replied: “I mean, this was a very brief interaction. “Before you can even process what they look like, you’ve been punched in the face. And now next thing you’re on the floor and you’re being kicked… “And so, this isn’t somebody who’s digesting what’s happening. I mean, there’s excitement and fear and all of these things happening.” Glandian went on to say that Smollett has no interest in pressing charges against these suspects — which sounds downright insane and bizarre. He’s claiming they beat him up, tied a rope around his neck, yelled racial and anti-gay slurs at him and poured bleach all over him? And he’s looking to clear his name? And yet he doesn’t want to press charges?!?!?!? That is questionable AF. Smollett’s lawyer also says Jussie is more upset about the reaction to his charges being dropped than about this supposedly heinous assault. Smollett is especially hurt by the way the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, and the Chicago Police Department slammed and trashed him as guilty… even after the state’s attorney office let him walk free. Emanuel referred to this decision as a ” whitewash of justice ,” adding of Smollett: You have a person using hate crime laws that are on the books to protect people who are minorities from violence to then turn around and use those laws to advance your career and your financial reward. Is there no decency in this man? “It is the Mayor and the Police Chief who owe Jussie – owe him an apology – for dragging an innocent man’s character through the mud. Jussie has paid enough,” Smollett’s legal team’s have now said in a statement. View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett: This is How He Staged His Alleged Assault

Justin Bieber: Banned in China for Being Impure, "Bad"

Judged on the low bar he has set for himself over the years, Justin Bieber has been acting pretty responsibly these days. Heck, he just visited some sick young fans at a hospital and he grew all emotional performing at the Manchester memorial concert last month. However, despite his run of relatively good behavior, the singer has apparently been banned from performing in China due to… well… very bad behavior. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture announced this week that Bieber cannot perform in the country because he is impure and he sets a negative example for supporters in that nation. The ban was explained when a fan of the scandal-filled artist posted on the Bejing Culture Bureau’s website, asking why she couldn’t see the singer on stage in China during the Asia leg of his Purpose tour this September. “Please give a detailed explanation of why Justin Bieber is not allowed to come to China!” wrote this curious individual, adding: “[He] has won many major awards, which demonstrates his extraordinary talents. Why aren’t mainland fans given the right to enjoy his performance?”  And this is how the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture replied: We sympathize with your feelings. Justin Bieber is a talented singer but is also a controversial young foreign idol. We understand that there are records of his bad behavior, whether it is in his private life abroad or on stage. His inappropriate manner has caused public discontent. In order to regulate the market order of show business in China and purify the market environment, it was decided that performers of inappropriate behavior will not be welcomed. That’s just amazing all around. What sort of bad behavior might China be referring to? Bieber has a history of driving recklessly, screaming at his own fans and generally acting like a pompous jackass. But there was a specific incident in China itself that may have gotten the government understandably riled up. In 2013, while on tour in the area, the superstar was captured on camera being carried up to the Great Wall of China by his bodyguards. Reports at the time indicated that officials in the country were offended by this action… as were many sane-minded individuals who saw it as the epitome of Justin Bieber acting like a spoiled brat. Then, in 2014, Bieber shared photos of himself visiting the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which many Chinese citizens see as a monument to Japan’s brutal wartime past. It’s not the kind of place you just brag about attending on social media. Bieber quickly apologized for the images and deleted them from his Instagram account. “While in Japan I asked my driver to pull over for which I saw a beautiful shrine,” he wrote at the time, explaining: “I was mislead to think the Shrines were only a place of prayer. To anyone I have offended I am extremely sorry. I love you China and I love you Japan.” That’s nice and all. But Chinese authorities do not love him back. Jada Pinkett-Smith Addresses Rumor that She and Will Smith Are Swingers!

Everybody's been subject to rumors at one point or another, but the ones about celebrities tend to be the most outlandish. Secret societies and cult rituals! Cloning factories! You name it. But even so, when a Watch What Happens Live caller asked Jada Pinkett-Smith to address the “craziest” rumor about her … we didn't quite expect this reply, which you can see in the video below! Jada laughs with Andy Cohen and mulls it over for a moment. “The craziest rumor? That Will and I are swingers.” (Swingers, of course, are couples who meet with other couples and exchange sex partners) We were a little surprised at that answer, but Jada certainly seems amused. (And we guess that it would somehow fit with the rumor that Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith are both gay … somehow) And she says that, even though she and Will have been together for ages, that rumor still somehow follows them. “That's the craziest one. … It’s constant.” As to her general response to the rumor? “And I’m like, 'Yo, I wish!'” For the record, being a swinger isn't something that you're born with. If Jada and Will wanted to be swingers, they could be. Jada Pinkett-Smith also responds to Andy Cohen's next question, replying that she and Will have been together for 23 years. That would be a long-ass time for a regular, non-celebrity couple to be married. The average length of a marriage that ends in divorce is 8 years. The Smiths have been together for almost three marriages, basically. Jada Pinkett-Smith has laughed off divorce rumors in the past , quashing them before they can pick up steam. And they've also managed to basically avoid aging during that time. Jada addressed how they'd managed to remain a couple for so long. “I really think that Will and I just have amazing chemistry on a lot of different levels.” That's always good, of course. “We love to laugh together, we love to learn together, and we just love each other.” That's so cute! “We just have a good time together.” Good — if you need to escape from your spouse to have a good time, you're doing it wrong. (Though you should still, you know, be an individual who can go out and have fun) “Yeah, I guess that’s the secret. Yeah, we just really like each other!” It's funny, because a running joke among LGBT folks on social media is that straight couples don't seem to like each other. Married straight people often joke about their husbands being lazy or their wives nagging or call their spouse “the old ball and chain.” Since many LGBT people had to campaign for years or decades for the simple right to marry their partner, it seemed perplexing to see couples who'd always had that right act resentful, as if they'd been paired up against their will. It looks like Jada and Will just discovered one of the big “secrets” to happy same-sex marriages: actually liking your spouse . The swinging is an entertaining story. But we wonder if it's a deflection. When we think of rumors about the Smiths, we think of the rumor that they're both Scientologists. They've denied it, but it's interesting that Jada doesn't bring it up here. Anyway, see her reaction below in this video:

Ben Affleck: FIRED as Batman?!

When Warner Bros. and DC announced that Ben Affleck had been cast as Batman for the character’s latest cinematic reboot, the cries of fanboy dismay could be heard from all corners of the globe. That prickly Boston bro as the Dark Knight?! cried many of the same people who bitched about Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker, then later conceded it was the perfect choice. It was impossible to imagine.  At the time, Affleck had already establised himself as a director of note, but for many, his acting still left something to be desired, and handing him the reins to one of the most iconic characters in all of pop culture just felt wrong. Then Zac Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman  was released and the nay-saying social media trolls were … totally proven right for once. The movie was not good, and Affleck was not good in it. Sure, the film gave us the Sad Affleck meme and made a boatload of money for the studio, but it failed to generate the sort of critical buzz that successful, long-lasting franchises are built on. The original plan was for Affleck to follow up BvS by writing, directing and starring in a standalone Batman flick, like some kind of black molded rubber-clad Orson Welles, which is a hilarious image that we suggest you pause and reflect on. But now, it seems DC and Warners have abruptly changed course. First, Affleck was fired as director (or he “stepped down,” depending who you ask). Shortly thereafter, the new director, Matt Reeves, tossed his script in favor of an entirely new story. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter , Affleck will be hanging up his cowl and passing the Caped Crusader on to someone new. The outlet claims that while the studio has yet to make an announcement, it currently seems very unlikely that Affleck will star in another Batman film. Insiders say the main issue is timing. DC has Shazam! and Suicide Squad 2 lined up as its next projects, which means The Batman (as the flick is tentatively titled) wouldn’t begin shooting until the final months of 2018 at the soonest. And that’s if Affleck is available to shoot at that time. Ben has a full dance card of his own these days, writing and directing the upcoming Agatha Christie adaptation Witness For the Prosecution and starring in a sequel to The Accountant , which is somehow a thing thats happening. (To say nothing of his new relationship with Lindsay Shookus , which probably takes up a good deal of his time these days.) All of this means that Affleck would likely be pushing 50 by the time the next Batman film hits theaters and on rare occasions, Hollywood dismisses men for their age, too. So it looks like we’ve seen the last of the Batfleck. He wasn’t the hero we deserved, but he was the hero who … eh, was fine considering the lack of better options, we guess.
