Guess Which Movie Was the Highest Grossing 2010 Release for Fox?

Considering Twentieth Century Fox executives are probably still counting the cash they made from Avatar , it seems silly to pass around the collection plate for them after a down year of releases in 2010. That said, which surprising Fox production managed to top the ticket sales of such high profile disappointments as The A-Team , Knight and Day and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ? Hint: Lesbians.

Is Taylor Lautner Going to Steal Tom Cruise’s ‘Always Riding a Motorcycle’ Shtick?

Taylor Lautner is a very busy guy! Busy shooting his new thriller Abduction , busy working out ( much to his chagrin ), and busy taking his hero worship of Tom Cruise a bit too far.

Blame Game: Why Did Knight and Day Disappoint at the Box Office?

With the summer of 2010 littered with critical and financial disappointments, Knight and Day doesn’t feel like a complete disaster — at least it’s not Jonah Hex , y’know? But that hasn’t stopped Tony Sella from falling on his sword. “Blame me, don’t blame Tom Cruise,” the Twentieth Century Fox co-president of marketing told the Los Angeles Times . “We did lots of focus groups for this film, and no one ever said there was a star problem. Never. Tom Cruise was not the issue. I take full responsibility.” Naturally this has been met with the kind of disbelief that is reserved for all things Cruise — spin to avert your gaze away from the fact that perhaps the A-List icon isn’t that big of a star anymore. But does Sella have a point? Perhaps he is to blame for Knight and Day . After the jump, Movieline investigates.

Friday Box Office: Neverending Story

As expected, the Toy Wonders are running roughshod over both Adam Sandler’s new comedy-in-name-only, Grown Ups , and Tom Cruise’s much-feared Knight and Day . Sandler can at least boast that — if projections are correct — his nearly-perfect string of $40 million opening weekends record remained untarnished. Meanwhile, back in Tom Cruise’s lead-lined, thetan-free mediation chamber, the erstwhile Mr. Mapother is no doubt punching the air in zombie-eyed joy that his movie is not a complete bomb. Hurray! It’s only sorta-bombing! After a bloodless opening day of less than $4 million, it’s picking up steam to head into the station on Sunday with a projected weekend gross of $20 million and a five-day gross of $27 million. Savor the rest of the little victories with us after the jump.

Summer of Discontent Awaits Knight and Day, Jonah Hex

Maybe the Les Grossman movie isn’t such a bad idea after all. With only three weeks to go until release, the box-office tracking on Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day is apparently inline with what the tracking was for Killers prior to its release. Gulp. Were it to disappoint, the heavily hyped and budgeted summer tentpole would join — oh, just about every other heavily hyped and budgeted summer tentpole in 2010. In fact, the only movie that might live up to its advanced buzz is Jonah Hex . The comic-book adaptation is also tracking poorly, which should come as a surprise to not one person on earth. When does Inception come out again? [ Deadline ]

Knight and Day’s New Ad Strategy: Watch Tom Cruise Get Kicked in the Stomach

Remember when Tom Cruise jumped the couch on Oprah , and suddenly, all these Flash games sprung up online where you could hurl tomatoes at the star, punch him at the face, or otherwise abuse him to your heart’s content? Well, the marketers behind Knight and Day must be going for that same demographic, as they’re pushing a new viral video where Cruise’s costar Cameron Diaz brutally kicks him in the stomach during a “stunt rehearsal.”
