‘Simon Killer’ Exclusive: Antonio Campos’s Dark Odyssey Gets A Kubrickian Poster

The Martha Marcy May Marlene camp notches another chilling character study in the AFI Fest selection Simon Killer , an unsettling look at a young American’s dark descent in Paris directed by Borderline Films ‘ Antonio Campos ( Afterschool ). Glimpse what lies in store with the film’s hauntingly gorgeous, Kubrickian poster design, exclusively on Movieline. Brady Corbet stars as Simon, a college grad traveling abroad who meets a Parisian prostitute (Mati Diop) and takes up with her, entrenching himself in her life in the shadowy streets of the Pigalle. Entrancing and provocative, Simon Killer constructs a sensory cinematic study around Simon’s psyche as he’s revealed to be more complex, and more dangerous, than what he seems. The visual parallel to 2001: A Space Odyssey ‘s famous “eye” poster is an intriguing comparison point to draw; Simon Killer is quite a trip in itself, a portrait of an affable twentysomething’s innocuous-enough wanderings through Paris that takes unexpected turns, forcing the audience to re-examine their perceptions of, and sympathy to, its protagonist. (The poster design is by Brandon Schaefer of Seek & Speak.) Simon Killer is set for release via IFC in April of 2013; it screens today, November 5 and again on November 7 at AFI Fest , which is a great opportunity to see one of the boldest and most provocative films we’ll see in the coming year. Daniel Radcliffe Is ‘Phenomenal,’ Elizabeth Olsen Raves

‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ actress is getting ready to star opposite Radcliffe in the thriller ‘Kill Your Darlings.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Cillian Murphy and Elizxabeth Olson Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Daniel Radcliffe is no longer just the Boy Who Lived — at this stage, he’s the Man Who Flourished. Indeed, Radcliffe has kept his post-“Potter” career very interesting, what with a turn as a horror lead in next month’s “Woman in Black,” a lengthy run on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and even a hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live” earlier this year. He’s set to keep his fans guessing even further with his next confirmed movie, “Kill Your Darlings,” which tells the tale of how Beat Generation icons Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Lucien Carr first met — and how that meeting eventually led to murder. Radcliffe plays Ginsberg in the film, and starring opposite him is up-and-coming actress Elizabeth Olsen. The brilliant young star of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” spoke with MTV News about joining the cast of “Kill Your Darlings,” making her admiration for the “Harry Potter” star very well-known. “He is so phenomenal,” Olsen said at the Sundance Film Festival , where she’s repping the paranormal thriller “Red Lights.” “He’s an incredible person. He’s so funny and smart and fun. He’s such a good guy.” Olsen is just one small cog in the greater machine of “Kill Your Darlings,” according to the actress. She said she only appears in “three scenes of that movie” as Edie Parker, girlfriend of Jack Kerouac. “Edie Parker is the one who introduced Ginsberg to Lucien Carr and Jack Kerouac,” she explained of her role. “She’s kind of the glue between them. I’m just there for a few scenes to explain that part of the story. But her personal life is really, really incredible.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Watch Elizabeth Olsen in the Real-Time, One-Take Creeper Silent House

Last year, Sundance It Girl Elizabeth Olsen had two notable films debut in Park City. One was Sean Durkin ‘s Martha Marcy May Marlene , which earned Olsen raves and new fans for her central turn as a paranoid cult survivor. Now comes Olsen’s second Sundance ’11 pic, Silent House , in which poor Olsen finds herself spooked by bumps in the night and possibly more insidious forces while stuck in a darkened abandoned house. Was it really shot in a single continuous take, as co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau claim? Is there any young actress quite as watchable in moments of terror as the younger Olsen? Watch the trailer and let us ponder these questions together. Silent House is a remake of the 2010 Uruguayan horror film La Casa Muda , which played the Cannes Film Festival and also used the one-take gimmick. As far as trailers go, this is how you do it. The “inspired by real events” angle has been done to death in modern horror (see: The Devil Inside ), but using Texas Chainsaw -style snapshot editing and voice-over makes it feel both fresh and retro at once. And then there’s the captivating power of Elizabeth Olsen’s face, fascinating even in terror, lit gorgeously within the constraints of a set that seems to rely on practical lighting. And hey! Her real-time ordeal lasts only 88 minutes. When’s the last time a movie promised not to take up too much of your day upfront? Verdict: Can’t wait to shiver and squirm along with Lizzie Olsen on March 9. In real time!

Elizabeth Olsen Signs On to Play an Adulteress in Racy New Role [PIC]

Soon people will have to start calling Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen ” Elizabeth Olsen ‘s older sisters.” 2011 has been a breakout year for the willowy young actress- she’s already getting awards buzz for her performance in the psychological drama Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), and now she’s signed on to appear in another type of awards bait- the costume drama. Elizabeth is set to star as the tit-ular character in Therese Raquin , about a young girl forced into a loveless marriage by her overbearing aunt (played by Glenn Close ), the result of which is a bosom-heaving, bodice-ripping knockout of an extramarital affair. The film is being described as a “dark, erotic thriller” (our favorite kind!) and will shoot in the spring. Therese Raquin has been adapted for the screen once before, in a 1980 BBC miniseries that featured Kate Nelligan nude, so here’s hoping that Elizabeth follows in Kate’s footsteps and rips off that bodice post haste. Mr. Skin members can see Elizabeth Olsen ‘s twins in action on our Martha Marcy May Marlene page!

5 Terrible Moments from Five of the Fall’s Best Films

We’re on the verge of a star-studded Oscar season, but before we dig into the potentially embarrassing J. Edgar , the probably overblown War Horse , or the already-cloying Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close , let’s take a second look at five great films from fall and remember that they weren’t so flawless either. In fact, these films all possessed one ridiculous moment that completely took me out of the otherwise believable drama. Did you have the same problems with Moneyball , Martha Marcy May Marlene , and Drive ? Click through for our rundown.

The Avengers Parody Trailer: Carnage in Cardboard

We’ve already seen one parody of the star-studded, snarky Avengers trailer that was released a couple weeks ago, but we think those Taiwanese geniuses have been topped by Swede Fest organizers Roque & Brian. The flying, lame one-liners, hair-whipping, and general superhero self-importance are all mocked here, and the closing quip seems to sum up the movie pretty nicely. Please watch, or you’ll be Thorry.
