Source: Ethan Miller / Getty MGM Resorts Settle Nearly $800 Million In Lawsuits From Las Vegas Shooting The Mandalay Bay was the site of the 2017 mass shooting that became the deadliest in modern United States history. 58 people were killed and hundreds of others were injured during a concert that boasted 22,000 in attendance. As a result, the MGM was sued, for a lot of money by multiple people. Today, the AP reported that those lawsuits have been settled by MGM Resorts International to the tune of, wait for it, up to $800 million. Insurance will pay $735 million and the company might kick in more depending on how many people participate. The suits claim that the hotel not only failed to protect concertgoers at the Mandalay Bay, they also failed to keep the shooter from building a stockpile of weapons and ammunition inside his hotel room for days and days. Las Vegas law firm Eglet Adams represents almost 2,500 plaintiffs. “Today’s agreement marks a milestone in the recovery process for the victims of the horrifying events of 1 October,” Robert Eglet, a lead plaintiffs’ counsel, said in the statement. “While nothing will be able to bring back the lives lost or undo the horrors so many suffered on that day, this settlement will provide fair compensation for thousands of victims and their families.” Victims and their families exploded in righteous indignation last year when MGM filed 1,900 lawsuits stating that they had no liability in the shooting under a federal 9/11-related protections bill. E ntertainment mogul Nick Cannon is adding daytime talk show television to his repertoire. According to the Hollywood Reporter , the Ncredible Entertainment founder inked a deal with Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury for the creation of his own talk show that is slated to come to television in 2020. Cannon says he was inspired to create his own show after filling in for Wendy Williams during her hiatus. “I’ve always dreamed of a platform where I can speak to America and discuss pop culture, as well as the topics on everyone’s minds,” he said. “When I had the opportunity to guest host at my good friend Wendy Williams’ show this year, I experienced the energy and excitement of a daytime talk show and instantly knew I found my audience.” The leadership team at Debmar-Mercury says that Cannon has proven himself to be a “dominant creative and entrepreneurial force across film, primetime TV, music, comedy, stage and online platforms” and are excited to partner with him on this new venture. While he’s gearing up to make his daytime television debut, Cannon has several other projects in the works. His MTV show Wild ‘N Out has been renewed for two more seasons and the show The Masked Singer , which he hosts, has been renewed as well. He also has a 30-city arena tour which is slated to kick off in 2020. Source: Power / Starz P reviously on Power , Riq got in way over his head with Vincent thinking he can hoodwink and bamboozle the seasoned gangster. He learned quickly that Vincent isn’t the one to play with and got his ass kidnapped. This happened immediately after he delivered Proctor’s daughter to her Uncle Benny’s house. Speaking of Proctor, we lost a real one last week. With some help from annoying “nephew” Tommy shows up at the penthouse, guns blazing…literally. After wasting a ridiculous amount of ammo, he finally catches up with Ghost’s favorite attorney and kills him. Riq’s “Kidnapping” Isn’t What It Seems To Be Source: Power / Starz A s mentioned in the brief recap above, Riq’s failed attempt at being a hustler got himself kidnapped by Vincent. The episode picks right back up at Coney Island, but we learn quickly that this situation isn’t what it seems. Riq is using his kidnapping to basically extort his dad and Uncle Tommy. He thinks it will help pay back the money he owes to Vincent and get a 50/50 cut in the process. What he doesn’t know is Vincent doesn’t plan on paying him a damn cent and will kill all of them in the process. Meanwhile, Ghost and Tommy are now scrambling to get enough product together to so they can get the $2 million that Vincent is requesting in exchange for Riq’s life. After a bit of a squabble, the two finally decide to put their minds together to formulate a plan that will help secure that incredible amount of money. Tommy agrees to acquire an insane amount of product to push, and Ghost will use his connections to help pay for it. Ghost runs to Rashad Tate to ask him for a cool $1 million out of his campaign funs, and Tate hit him with the “n**** what?” Tate can’t stand Ghost’s ass, but unfortunately for him, the ever so slick former drug dealer has some dirt on him, so he has no choice but to give James the money. Ghost promises to hand over the recording to Tate and return the money in 24 hours. Tommy is handling business on his end and secures the ridiculous amount of drugs from Jason. Of course, Tommy’s drug connect is very curious as to why his distro needs so much weight. Tommy manages to quell Jason’s curiosity by basically telling him hey you got your money, now mind your business. While Ghost and Tommy are getting their plan together, Riq and Vincent are making sure their “kidnapping” is going down without a hitch. Vincent runs up on Tasha to break the bad news to her just to see if she knew anything about what was going down. Like Riq explained to his “kidnapper,” he was well aware Ghost would have not told his mother, and he was correct. After finding out what is going on, Tasha runs straight to Tommy’s crib to voice her frustration with Ghost. She learns that Ghost is now unwillingly back in the drug game and demands to help and offers to clean money through her daycare and help with the books. That’s all good, BUT Keisha who just became hip to drug game is not onboard with the idea. How are you gonna tell Tasha she can’t help get her own son back though? Source: Power / Starz Anyway, Tommy gets Holly 2.0 to calm down and accept the fact she is not in control of the decisions around the matter, and now everything is set. Tommy manages to get 2-Bit and Spank onboard with the plan to help move the product after Black Grimace shows he is down for the cause. Ghost recruits Dre by convincing the worried goon he’ll help find his daughter with some help from Tate plus in the process will help him become Jason’s new distro. Ghost still doesn’t trust Dre and reveals to him that he will be working with Alfonse to help him move the drugs. The plan goes off without a hitch, and they manage to get the money, and now it’s time to pay Vincent and get Riq back. Jason Is Right On Time To Ruin Everything Source: Power / Starz O n this show, you should have already known that nothing goes as plan. On the way to the drop off the money, Ghost and Tommy are ambushed by Jason and his crew. It would appear that Jason was watching them move the entire time, and he is not happy to learn of himself being out of the loop. To make up for the money the two former friends owe him, he decides to take half of the $2 million ransom request much to the dismay of Tommy and Ghost. Knowing they dodged a severe bullet, Ghost and Tommy are now $1 million in the hole and don’t know what to do. The only logical thing they can think of is to go to Vincent with what they have and explain to him what happened. If you said to yourself that idea wasn’t going to work, then you were 100% correct. Vincent did not care and to let them know he wasn’t playing whooped Riq’s ass with a sack of oranges. Secretly we were here for it, but Ghost wasn’t, and we understand, who wants to see their son get brutalized with fruit? After Vincent goes ham ono Riq’s stomach, he tells Ghost and Tommy they got another 24 hours to get the rest of the money or Riq is dead. Jason isn’t their only problem, the feds led by Blanca and her terrible fake Rosie Perez detective voice trying to get to the bottom of Proctors murder. The whole incident seemed quite fishy to them with the backdoor being left open and no sign of forced entry. They want to question Riq about Proctor’s murder, but unfortunately, he’s currently being held “hostage” at the moment and can’t talk to anyone. Tasha To The Rescue Source: Power / Starz G host and Tommy return to Keisha and Tasha with the bad news about the drop. All hope seems lost, but Tasha comes through in the clutch. Now granted it only happened because Keisha opened her big mouth about Tasha’s side hustle at the daycare, leaving her no choice but to spill the beans. Ghost is livid at first to find out that Tasha has been hustling without his knowledge and wants to meet her connect. She, of course, says no but after some convincing from Tommy, he gets down with the plan. Keisha then points out that they need a plan B and Tasha then comes up with another idea, they should hit club Truth. The plan is to rob all the rich folks who in the building for the fundraiser event for Tate. Ghost with the help of his potential new replacement for Angela, Romana came up with the idea to help Tate raise cash. James thinks it’s a good idea and Tommy recruits 2-Bit, Spank, Black Grimace while Ghost adds Alfonse to the mix. Tasha also suggests that it would be a good idea that Ghost tells Vincent that he needs to allow Riq to talk to the cops, Ghost agrees because he knows Vincent wouldn’t want the heat surrounding him during this extortion scheme. Vincent agrees to let Riq meet with Blanca and the detective on the case. Can we add how terrible both of them are at playing cops? Anyway, Riq puts on his scared young teen act telling them he left to get some hot chocolate, and the only reason he went through the back door was to avoid a “racist neighbor.” He sealed his story with the ultimate kiss by claiming how tired he was of seeing people die and that he was sorry to hear about Proctor’s death and as far as we know both detectives ate it up. Once outside Tasha pulls her son to the side to ask him why did he make up such a bullshit story and he explains that he knows that Vincent is going to kill them all after he gets the money. When Tasha touches his stomach area, he winces in pain, and she discovers the bruises from Vincent beating him with the oranges. Source: Power / Starz Before the plan to rob Truth goes into effect, Ghost links up with Uncle Benny to speak with him in person about Proctor’s death and extend his condolences. He also wanted to share some information on who could have done it mentioning the name his now-former attorney said to him the last time he spoke with him. Benny is grateful for the tip and promises to repay Ghost if he needs anything. Ghost decides to call in that favor now asking for some help from Benny’s men. Run The Jewels Source: Power / Starz I t’s time for the big heist. Everyone is playing their part, Dre is moving the new product Tasha supplied through the club while her stripper accomplice from last week is making good on her end at the strip club. Tate approached Ghost about the money and revealed to him that somehow someway the all of it was returned when the accountants checked the books. While everyone was sipping on expensive champagne and hob-knobbing, they had no idea they were about to be jacked by 2-Bit, Spank, Black Grimace, and Alfonse. Dre who doesn’t know about the plan sees his former associates 2-Bit and Spank puts on his best confused but scared look. 2-Bit who was tasked to kill Dre before spots him and decides this would be a good time finish the job he started. Dre somehow manages to slip, and 2-Bit goes back to the matters at hand. Once they are all dressed up in the heist drip, they bust in the party demanding everyone to give up their jewelry and money. They quickly relieve everyone of their possessions and 2-Bit, Spank and Black Grimace leave. Alfonse for whatever reason decides to be extra and bother Ramona. Tate immediately recognizes Alfonse and tells James. Ghost recognizing that this could mess up the plan gives Tate his gun and decides to try and convince Alfonse to just leave. For whatever reason, Alfonse decides nah and hits Ghost in the stomach with his shotgun, Tate being a former police officer shoots and kills Alfonse. Source: Power / Starz After the dust settled, Tate now looks like a crime-fighting hero, the money he stole is insured so it will still come back. Ramona is pleased with all that goes down; you can tell she wants to give Ghost the business for what just went down. Source: Power / Starz Could she also be onto Ghost as well? Time will only tell. Ghost Knows Tommy’s Dirty Little Secret Source: Power / Starz W ith all the money secured, it’s time for the drop off part 2. Ghost and Tommy arrived with the cash and one of Vincent’s men they kidnapped as bonus insurance. Vincent and his cronies come with Riq, Tommy drops off the money, and the exchange is made. Vincent immediately shows his hand revealing his plot to kill all of them. Ghost came prepared, and signals for Benny and his crew to show up. The two mobsters know each other and Benny tells Vincent that since Riq kept his niece safe during her father’s murder, he is protected for life. If he kills Riq or anyone associated with him, there will be an all-out war between the two families. Vincent decides to take his money and back off. Source: Power / Starz While thanking Benny for his services, Ghost notices Tommy’s reaction towards him, while Tommy notices that Benny only did what he did because Ghost told him who Proctor’s killer was. After Benny leaves, the two former friends and business partners have one last moment together before parting ways. While at Source: Power / Starz Tasha’s new digs, Ghost has an epiphany and realizes that Tommy killed his attorney and Riq helped him do it. Meanwhile, Tommy knows that Ghost is well aware that he killed Proctor. Keisha pledges her allegiance to Tommy vowing to kill anyone who tries to hurt her man (yeah right). Tommy tells her to chill he got this, and the war between the two of them is back on. Well so much for that truce. Source: photo: WENN When it was announced that Twilight star Robert Pattinson would be replacing Ben Affleck as the Batman , DC and Warner Bros. immediately saw a backlash from fans who saw this move as a money grab intended to sway Twilight tweens to pack theaters to see Edward Cullen evolve from a teen vampire to a full grown Batman. Though word around the script itself is rumored to center around the classic Batman mini-series The Long Halloween , nothing else has been said about the upcoming Matt Reeves directed film. Until now. According to Variety , fan favorite comedy actor Jonah Hill has been tapped to play the Dark Knight’s antagonist in the upcoming film and though his character continues to be a mystery it is believed that the Superbad actor will either be donning the umbrella and top hat of The Penguin or the cane and question mark etched outfit of The Riddler. While Variety also lists Mr. Freeze as another possible role for Hill, he seems more like a Penguin or Riddler kind of character. Just sayin.’ Regardless of which character he plays his inclusion in The Batman is definitely welcomed by Batman fans and will certainly give us more reason to put down our money at the box office when the Dark Knight swings into theaters sometime in June of 2021. But if Robert Pattinson’s Batman is indeed going to follow the storyline of The Long Halloween , then Jonah Hill won’t be the only villain involved in the film as the classic Jeph Loeb storyline included appearances from a few familiar villains from the Batman universe. Here’s to hoping that DC and Warner Bros. doesn’t screw this one up too and turn Jonah Hill into yet another iteration of the Joker or even worse, Bane. Jonah Hill has been looking particularly pumped these days though so you never know.
Source: Power / Starz L ast week James saw ghosts… literally. He was being haunted by his dead mistress/girlfriend Angela and her red dress throughout the episode. Listening to the specter, he decided not to kill Maria Suarez but instead gave her a chance to live her life. He also tried to take out Tommy in a failed hit with some assistance from friends in high places that didn’t go unnoticed. Dre went back to his double-crossing ways to make sure he is positioning himself to take over and get his daughter back from the clutches of the Feds. Tasha opened up her daycare and made a new friend, but we are very suspicious of homie and his baby shower Burberry shirt. Riq learned the hard way that stealing and selling drugs isn’t as easy as he thought it would be. Proctor thought he was finally rid of his ex-wife and watched her overdose on booger sugar. All of these actions bore consequences that played off in in the 5th episode of the shows 6th and final season. Vincent Calls In That Favor From Riq Source: Power / Starz R iq’s foray into the world of narcotics is off to a ridiculously bumpy start. After Riq stole pills from his Uncle Tommy only to have them taken away, the son of Ghost has to somehow secure double the product for Vincent now. His “new boo” and business partner, Effie might be playing the young pill pusher. After a game of chess where Riq bested her using the ‘King’s Gambit’ move, she sends a text to an unknown person informing them that Riq is out of pills and she is going to “keep an eye on him.” This is directly after him receiving a text from Vincent informing him it’s time to deliver on the goods. You can’t trust anyone on this show. N O B O D Y. Anyway, Riq gets the bright but seriously dumb idea to try and trick Vincent by giving him a bottle full of baby aspirin. While utilizing the schools AP room (another bonehead ass move) Effie is the shadows watching her mark fluff up the pill bottle. This whole situation is getting out of control. Anyway, Riq takes the product to Vincent and for the moment thinks he is in the clear, but he will quickly learn that is not the case. Riq gets a surprise visit from his mom and Choate’s Dean, and it would appear somebody Tekashi 6ix9ine’d the amateur drug dealer. Could it have been Effie? After learning he has been expelled pending an investigation, Riq takes one last look at the chessboard, do you think he knows it was Effie that played him? As punishment, he is forced to stay with his dad at the penthouse and Ghost is not too happy to see his boy traveling down the dark path. After an exchange where Tasha intervenes before Ghost beats the breaks off his smart mouth son, the estranged couple has an argument over who is responsible for their son’s behavior. Tasha storms out of her former home, while Ghost is going to get some more guests and we will touch on that later. James Decides To Step Away From Tate’s Campaign Source: Power / Starz R ashad Tate’s campaign for the governorship of NYC loses one it’s most prominent faces. Ghost calls an impromptu meeting to tell them face-to-face that he will be stepping back from Tate’s campaign. While this is welcoming news to Rashad, it concerns Ramona who reveals much to the surprise of Ghost that his stunt at the press conference helped Tate rise in the polls. Ramona does her best to try to convince Ghost *coughs* we mean James to reconsider, but his mind is already made up. Plus before he could have any second thoughts, Tate thanks him for his decision before cockily pointing out this is his campaign and he agrees with James. Ramona doesn’t give up though and makes a second pitch to James over dinner. Even Stevie Wonder can see that Ramona wants James to *in our best Bossip voice* smash her political cakes to smithereens and he knows it. She makes a solid case to James as to why he should come back and that “the man” is better than the perceptions that people have of him based on previous situations. While we think Ghost is doing all of this as some sort of plan that will play out later, it would seem Romana is making a strong impression on him. Source: Power / Starz After a classic television hand touching moment, James announces that he has to go to handle other matters A.K.A. Ghost matters that we will be discussing later in this recap. He plants the seed that they should link up without Tate around again, and of course, Ramona is on board with that. Saxe’s Obsession With Catching Ghost Gets Him In Trouble Source: Power / Starz C ooper Saxe wants to put Ghost in jail really bad. He is so hell-bent on his mission that he is willing to ignore clear clues that indicate that Ghost didn’t kill Angela. Even after Blanca carefully explained to him how Ghost couldn’t have been the one to fatally shoot Angela. Even with all of the information, Saxe is still reaching to the high heavens to somehow involve Ghost in the murder of Angela Valdez despite the evidence clearly suggesting he didn’t. Source: Power / Starz His Ghost obsession, plus his sneaky moves, will get him in trouble though. During a meeting with Dre, he plays dirty by trying to squeeze info out of his informant by giving him a glimpse of his crying daughter in a truck. Dre doesn’t tell Saxe how Ghost knew where Maria Suarez was, but he does reveal that his boss was having a conversation with Tommy’s connect Jason. Source: Power / Starz That doesn’t really impress Saxe, and he instructs Dre to “dig deeper.” He has to run back to the office after receiving a text message from his boss telling him to come in. Warner is absolutely pissed that Saxe was making all of these moves without telling him. He is singularly perturbed about Maria Suarez switching her story and Saxe sending in the FBI agents to unsuccessfully nab Ghost. Warner also reveals that Saxe’s cooperating informant, Proctor’s ex-wife, Lindsay has died from an overdose and that Joe was the one who called it in. Warner decides to go pay Proctor a visit so he can salvage whatever case they may have left. Saxe asks if he can accompany him and we all know why, so he can grab the illegal bug he had Lindsay plant on her daughter’s book bag to listen in on Proctor’s conversations. Saxe hasn’t been able to get that smoking gun he’s needed to nail Ghost, but he definitely got something juicy on the recording device that could possibly help him inch towards his goal. Tasha’s Daycare Business Isn’t Slapping Like She Thought It Would Source: Power / Starz T asha thought opening up a daycare would solve all of her problems. Unfortunately for her, that is not the case at all. She is strapped for cash thanks to the daycare center and asks Tommy for help. He initially offers to give his friend some money but declines to wash his drug cash through the center because Keisha offered up her salon already. Tasha already knows the deal and tells Tommy to be careful with Keisha, but he has the utmost faith in Holly2.0. Tasha’s money troubles are going to get exponentially worse. While closing the center, she is approached by hood local who wants her to start dishing out money to stay in the neighborhood. He clearly has no idea who he is shaking down, but Tasha also realizes this could be a potential problem. Tasha has to think fast, and while trying to return some clothes to get some much-needed cash unsuccessfully, she bumps into former bestie Keisha. The two have a small conversation with Keisha asking about Tommy’s dead ex-girlfriend Holly. Tasha warns her to not overstep like the dead redhead and the pisses Keisha off, causing her to walk out of the department store. Source: Power / Starz Tasha and Tommy link back up, and she tells him that she really needs the money, obviously because she has to pay off the neighborhood gangsta. This time Tommy tells her no because Keisha was upset after her run-in with Tasha. Source: Power / Starz Tasha isn’t feeling the fact that Tommy chose Keisha’s box over their friendship and reminds him he was acting the same way with Holly. Tommy doesn’t take too kindly to that and kicks Tasha out of his car. BUT before all of this happened Tasha revealed some beneficial information to Tommy that he will use later to his advantage. Tasha might be down, but she is not out yet. She encounters the local gangster once again, and he is looking for payment. Tasha informs him that she does not have his money, but does offer to push drugs for him and he agrees. He hands the daycare center owner a handful of product and walks off. Source: Power / Starz Tasha then proceeds to call one of the children’s parents we met earlier, a stripper and recruits her to help with selling the drugs. Looks like Tasha found herself a new hustle and at the same time found a way to keep the local “protection racket” happy. Proctor Finally Slips Up Source: Power / Starz P roctor took a severe gamble when he decided to let his ex-wife die instead of calling for help. He had no idea the listening device conveniently placed on his daughter’s backpack was going to pick up him saying that his wife would never take away their child from him. Tommy takes the bait and leaves Joe alive for now, but Proctor is still in a world of trouble. Saxe catches up with the lawyer, and before he can head inside his home, he plays the recording of him letting his ex-wife die of an overdose. While Proctor knows this recording is illegal, its something he doesn’t want his daughter to find out about. Proctor has a conversation with his brother Benny, and he breaks down the entire ordeal. Benny suggests Proctor uses the laptop that was taken from Bailey Markham as insurance, but Joe tells him it is no longer in his possession. Benny urges Joe not to snitch and hands him his gun, Proctor promises he won’t become a rat. With no one else to turn too, Proctor decides that his place is too hot and decides to ask Ghost if he and his daughter can stay with him. Ghost was reluctant at first but eventually comes around to let his power attorney shack up with him. We will soon learn the penthouse will be the final place he ever sees. Tommy Goes On A Cancel Christmas Spree Source: Power / Starz T here is no doubt about it, zero f*cks Tommy is our favorite. There were plenty of loose strings to tie up, and Tommy made sure he did that. He took all the info he acquired from both Tasha and Proctor to make sure there will be one left to ruin his business. He takes the stack of cash Ghost gave her as a parting gift. Ghost eventually shows up and finds the young woman’s corpse, looks like James was there to finish the job, but was too late. He takes the envelope he put the money in and leaves before the cops and feds show up. Tommy isn’t finished though, there is one more loose end to get rid of, and that is Proctor. Tommy sends 2-Bit to kill the bailiff who poisoned Alicia Jimenez during her trial. That only leaves Proctor and to make sure his path to his target is clear he calls in a favor from his nephew Riq. Tommy instructs the struggle dope boy to deactivate the security alarm and leave the back door open. He also tells him to get the hell out of dodge cause he intends to let the choppa spray…literally. Riq does what his Uncle asks and before he leaves, comes across a crying Elisa Marie in his dead twin sister’s room. Not wanting her to be around while her dad is being shot at, Riq convinces her to come with him to get hot chocolate. With them out Tommy is cleared to rub out Proctor and he is packing some ridiculous heat. Armed with an assault rifle, Tommy sprays Ghost apartment with bullets trying to kill his target. Proctor armed with just a handgun defends himself, but he’s a terrible shot and is just wasting bullets. He runs to the room where he believed his daughter would be and is surprised to find out she is not there. He calls her phone and is relieved to learn she is not in the penthouse and far away from the action. While he makes his last stand in Raina’s room, he tells Elisa Marie to not come back to the apartment and to straight to her Uncle Benny’s house. He says goodbye to her for the final time in a somber moment before Tommy finally breaks in the room and fills him up with bullets. Now before he got his Christmas canceled he gave his daughter a locket with a memory card in it. We are sure that will come back to bite either Tommy or Ghost in the ass somehow. So long Proctor you had a nice run, hate it had to be you, my brother. Riq’s Stupidity Unites Ghost and Tommy Again…For The Time Being Source: Power / Starz W hile the shootout was going down at the penthouse Riq and Elisa Marie were out enjoying hot chocolate. After Riq help’s deliver the now-orphan to her Uncle Benny, Riq is grabbed up by Vincent and his goons. It would seem that he caught on to the fake pills in the bottle and now is going to make him pay. Ghost arrives at his apartment and is saddened to see his favorite attorney has been killed but has no idea what the hell happened. He is also worried about Riq more than anything and cuts off Saxe and Blanca’s questioning when he receives a phone call from Riq. At the same time, Tommy gets a 9-1-1 text from his nephew telling him to meet up with him at Coney Island. Apparently, Riq sent both his dad and uncle the same message, and they learn that when they bump into each other at the amusement park. Before the former friends and business partners could start fighting with each other Vincent reveals himself and tells them that it was he who called them to the location. He informs both of them that he has Riq and that if they want to keep Riq alive, they have to pay him $2 million to save his life. Based on the preview from next week’s episode looks like the gang will have to come together again to save the knucklehead teenager. Source: Scott Olson / Getty Cory Booker’s Presidential Run Could Be Over If He Fails To Get Donations According to ABC News , Cory Booker ‘s presidential campaign could be over soon. Booker’s campaign manager Addisu Demissie says that the candidate needs to raise almost $1.7 million before Sept. 30 to stay in the presidential race. Demissie explains that Booker would not meet the “increase in the DNC’s debate-qualifying thresholds, which would require significant funds to meet” without help from the public. The $1.7 million is the minimum amount Booker needs to collect to keep his campaign going. Per Demissie, the candidate has to raise as much money as possible so that he can put together a competitive campaign plan. Earlier this year raised $4.5 million and spent $5.3 million. This is behind the top tier Democratic candidates. But, he’s not the only presidential hopeful in this position. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke both generated fewer funds than Booker.
T wo Black women entrepreneurs paid it forward by giving back to students in need at their alma mater. Pinky Cole , the creator of the plant-based burger restaurant Slutty Vegan, and Harlem Hops owner Stacey Lee —both alums of Clark Atlanta University—helped 30 seniors who attend the historically Black college pay off their debt, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. These two women went back to their alma mater and asked for a list of seniors who wouldn’t be able to graduate due to outstanding balances. Cognizant of how the student debt crisis has hit HBCUs the hardest, the women were motivated to utilize their resources to make a difference in the lives of students of color. Cole and Lee—who are members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated—connected with the school and asked for a list of seniors who needed to pay off debt so they would be able to graduate. They randomly chose 30 students to help and surprised them on campus to let them know that their outstanding balances have been handled. “God has been so good to us both. It just felt right,” Cold told Because of Them We Can . “Growing up in a single-family household, and being the first to go to college, I know what it feels like to not know where the money is coming from. But there were people who believed in me despite my circumstances and I wanted to be that person for someone else.” Since the inception of her fast-growing business, which has evolved into a staple in Atlanta, she has donated over $100,000 towards the education of college students in need. Entrepreneurs are stepping up to help students of different ages tackle their debt. In June, a Black-owned barbershop in North Carolina raised money to help high school seniors pay off their debt so they would be able to graduate.
