‘Silent House’: The Reviews Are In!

‘[Elizabeth] Olsen rivets our attention, and the camera’s, so fiercely it verges on unbearable,’ Kat Murphy of MSN.com writes. By Kara Warner Elizabeth Olsen in “Silent House” Photo: Open Road Films Although based on a 2010 Uruguayan Spanish-language horror film, “Silent House” is supposedly inspired by actual events, which only adds to its creep factor. It’s not a movie for the faint of heart. Elizabeth Olsen stars as a young women who finds herself trapped in a remote cottage where she is haunted and hunted by unknown horrors. While critics seem divided over whether it is mostly good or bad — the film is currently hovering around the 50 percent Fresh mark over at Rotten Tomatoes — almost all of them had high praise for the technical construction of the film, which was uniquely done by filming the entire movie in one long, continuous shot . Read on through the “Silent House” reviews … if you dare. The Plot ” ‘Silent House’ introduces us to our soon to be harried heroine, a 20-something who’s returned with her father to their old family vacation home (in the woods and by a lake, natch) to pack it up, board it up, and say farewell to it before it goes on the market. But it’s going to take a lot of work — squatters have defaced it; rust has wrecked the plumbing; and mildew’s worked its way into the electrical system. The house is much like Sarah … she’s barely hiding lots of peeling paint, weak foundations, and broken windows to the soul. But why? We will find out, but first it is time to get scared! Dad and Sarah are soon joined by Uncle Peter who’s come to help with the tidying, a neighbor Sarah really doesn’t remember from childhood summers pops by, and a creepy little girl lurks just out of sight in convenient shadows. The players are in place, and the suspense begins. It’s just little things at first; a noise here, a falling piece of plastic sheeting there. And then Sarah’s dad is attacked, his eye bloodily gouged from his skull. Sarah tries to run — and she does escape the dwelling of doom, but she’s lured back inside by clever, insidious means. To reveal much more would be spoilery, but I will say that Silent House is the kind of movie you must suspend all disbelief for (OK, maybe some of the embarrassingly foreshadowing dialogue is diss-worthy) in order to enjoy. Just watch the girl, follow her, and get caught up in her terror. It works on a visceral level, similar to the French film of a few years back, ‘Ils.’ ” — Staci Layne, Horror.com The Technical Achievement “Like Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Rope’ or the original movie, the conceit of the film is that it’s entirely shot in one take with only a couple obvious times where they could have easily cheated. If you weren’t informed in advance that the movie was done in one take, you may not even realize it as the camera person/DP follows the characters up and downstairs, in and out of the house in an incredibly fluid way, barely missing a beat as we go from mundane packing activities to intense horrors. [Directors] Kentis and Lau have done a terrific job creating an atmosphere of tension, keeping the viewer on the edge never knowing what to expect or in fact, what exactly is going on. This helps to make some of the more obvious jump scares work better than they might normally, something that can also be attributed to Nathan Larson’s subtle but effective score. Even so, the filmmakers sadly go for many often-used clich

‘In The Land Of Blood And Honey’: The Reviews Are In!

‘No one should be surprised that Angelina Jolie is as capable behind the camera as in front of it,’ one critic says of globetrotting Oscar winner. By Kara Warner Zana Marjanovic in “In the Land of Blood and Honey” Photo: GK Films For her directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” Angelina Jolie chose to helm a harrowing, unrelenting drama set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War that highlights the horrors of the ethnic conflict that ravaged the region in the 1990s. To say that it is not a feel-good film is an understatement. The critics are almost completely divided on whether Jolie’s effort, which scored a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film, is a success. Read on as we sift through the reviews of “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” The Story “Eight years ago Jolie starred in a film, ‘Beyond Borders,’ in which she sashayed around global hot spots in elegant outfits like a fashion model on a shoot. Almost as if in atonement, ‘Blood and Honey’ is nothing like that, quite the contrary, in fact, as it centers on the queasy relationship between a captor, a Serbian army officer responsible for rounding up Muslims or otherwise making them disappear in Bosnia, and a female prisoner, a woman he was interested in prior to the war and is now able to exploit, but also protect, as his ‘personal property.’ ” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter The Direction “Because Jolie is known for her very public passions, which have progressed from the relative simplicity of the carnal to a globally-oriented expression of the maternal, the relatively sedate tone of ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ is unexpected. The systematic use of rape as a weapon of war is depicted with discretion (the brutality was far more vivid in ‘The Whistleblower,’ another 2011 Bosnian war-themed release). Jolie might show a shrieking woman being carried away by a soldier in the background, but she keeps much of the horror offscreen, at a remove from Ajla. Meanwhile, her scenes with Danijel read as lovers taking pleasure in each other’s company, legs and limbs tangled languidly in the sheets. … No one should be surprised that Angelina Jolie is as capable behind the camera as in front of it; why wouldn’t she be? Here’s an Oscar winner who travels the world on behalf of the United Nations listening to horror stories from refugees; processing pain is a regular sideline for her.” — Mary Pols, Time The Performances “Jolie’s actors [Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic, Vanesa Glodjo], all from the former Yugoslavia and unknown in the West except for the superb veteran character actor Rade Serbedzija, give magnetic, raw performances. Their commitment helps us through a movie that is often harrowing, never less than intense but important, one unafraid of moments too many have chosen to forget.” — Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News The Final Word “Considering the historical, ethical and technical challenges in the mix — a first-time director recreating a war of ethnic cleansing on a bombs-and-bullets level, with charged issues or power and abuse, along with the challenge of shooting in a second language in a foreign land — it is not patronizing to suggest that Ms. Jolie’s first film is an ambitious step forward that promises more, and better, in the future. The film may have more in ambition than it does in execution, but it deserves to be taken seriously as a debut by someone who may yet be as natural and assured behind the camera as she seems to be in front of it.” — James Rocchi, MSN.com Check out everything we’ve got on “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lil Wayne And Drake To Drop Joint Album

‘That’s definitely going to get done,’ Cash Money honcho Birdman confirms to XXLmag.com. By Rob Markman Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: Julia Beverly Move over Jay-Z and Kanye West , here come Lil Wayne and Drake . While Hov and Yeezy have pretty much dominated the hip-hop conversation this week with the release of their collaborative Watch the Throne, Cash Money CEO Bryan “Birdman” Williams took it up a notch when he confirmed on Friday (August 12) that Weezy and Drizzy Drake will also be joining forces on an upcoming project. “Wayne and I recently talked about [the Weezy/Drake collabo album],” Baby told XXLmag.com . “That’s definitely going to get done.” Birdman is himself no stranger to joint LPs: In 2006, the #1 Stunna shared billing with Wayne on their Like Father, Like Son album. Now, in 2011, the tag-team trend appears to be gaining even more traction. Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ got together as Bad Meets Evil on their Hell: The Sequel EP in June. Of course, there’s Jay and ‘Ye’s Throne, which dropped this week, as did Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame’s Ferrari Boyz LP . Back in January, during a radio interview with the U.K.’s Tim Westwood, Drake spoke on his plans to work with Wayne on a joint project. “We still got to do that album,” he said. “I heard some other guys are coming out with an album too. There’s two other rappers that are coming out with an album together. … I don’t know where they got that idea but …” Hear why Royce Da 5’9″ thinks tag-team albums are good for the game. Baby drew a clear distinction, however, between the Throne’s sound and the sound that Drake and Weezy will be coming with. “It’s older versus younger,” he said. “I listened to a few songs [off Watch the Throne ], and it feels like an older feel to me. I think with Drake and Wayne, they young, they young cats. You got 23 and 28. Then you got Jay-Z and them, who are older and really on their way out the game. Then you got Wayne and Drake and them, who are still youthful to the game. So it’s two different types of music all the way across the board.” Baby did acknowledge the mark that Jay and Kanye have made on the music industry with their WTT release. “But what they’re doing is great. I think it’s great for the game, great for the business, great for retail as a whole,” he continued. “I just think when Wayne and Drake get together, [it’s] going to be something real special also because we more youthful.” With songs like “Successful,” “Miss Me” and “Right Above It” already under their belts, there is no doubt that Wayne and Drake have developed a chemistry, but as for when the duo would actually drop the project, Birdman couldn’t say. Wayne’s Tha Carter IV is due on August 29 and Drake’s sophomore work, Take Care, drops just two months later on October 24, so it may be some time. ‘Glee: The 3D Concert Movie’: The Reviews Are In!

Is it as good as the show? Completely gratuitous? Worth the 3-D effects? Read what the critics have to say. By Kara Warner Chord Overstreet, Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Lea Michele in “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation For the “Glee”-obsessed out there counting down the days until the start of the hit TV show’s third season, your wait has been temporarily abated with the arrival of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” Here at MTV News, we’ve been celebrating the arrival of the 88-minute music-filled extravaganza with several fun moments with castmembers, including a “Glee”-style musical recap of the film and a hilarious list of superlatives . But now, with the movie finally out, it’s time to analyze the nuts and bolts of the film by way of critical mass — it’s currently posting a 61 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read on for the “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” reviews, pro/con style. The Setup “A blend of concert footage, interstitial fan segments and faux behind-the-scenes snippets (the actors remain in character), pic avoids going the ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ route of documenting the cast members’ rise to stardom. Nor does it offer much in the way of surprises. Instead, the goal is largely to provide the ‘Glee’ Live! concert event for those who missed the recent tour, an immersive experience enhanced by fan testimonials about the series’ positive impact on their lives. As tempting as it is to label this approach over-calculated and self-congratulatory, it’s virtually impossible not to be swept up in the surge of ebullience and affection. As one fan attests, ‘ “Glee” is like medicine.’ Adds another, ‘It’s like the playlist of my life.’ — Lael Loewenstein, Variety “Even Gleeks who love to watch seasoned showbiz belters pretend to be high school kids on the hit TV series ‘Glee’ may wince at the cheesy marketing angle of ‘Glee the 3D Concert Movie.’ And I report this as a former geeky high school alto who is, if not a Gleek, at least ‘Glee’ friendly. … The positive power of a TV show to encourage tolerance and compassion among its viewers is a wonderful thing. But these ‘success stories’ tilt uncomfortably toward self-congratulation on the part of the producers; certainly they register as overkill for the intended audience, who presumably already know how awesome it is.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Performances “The concert stuff is a slightly knottier matter. The actors from the series perform in character, enacting the roles they play on the show onstage as they sing; Lea Michele’s goofily diva-esque Rachel belts out Streisand’s big ‘Funny Girl’ number ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ as if Babs herself were out in the audience checking it out. … A Kurt/Rachel duet of ‘Get Happy’ and ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’ is an apt nod to Judy Garland and the originalist strain of glee-club singing and is kind of nifty. On the other hand, Finn’s ballad rendition of ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ is an equally apt reminder of the fact that just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should, and the version of Queen’s cheekily crass ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Mark Salling’s studly Puck is both entirely beside the point and from hunger, as it were. — Glen Kinney, MSN Movies “Another of the movie’s strengths is the showcasing of cast members with dance training, like McHale, Heather Morris and Harry Shum Jr. The gifted Shum gets favored by the camera frequently during choreographer Zach Woodlee’s dance routines, while Morris — whose deadpan timing as ditzy cheerleader Brittany is a show standout — shines in her pumped-up version of Britney Spears’ ‘I’m a Slave 4 U.’ ” — Robert Abele, The Los Angeles Times The Final Word “For a film that was put together so rapidly, it doesn’t look at all shoddy (except for a couple of frames near the end shot from the giant screen instead of the stage). The 3D effect, however, is largely superfluous until the final credits, when the show’s trademark blue slushie heads straight for the viewer. On that note, you might leave ‘Glee 3D’ feeling a little gooey all over, but that slushie does taste kind of sweet.” — Loewenstein, Variety “The movie is entertaining and, admittedly, completely unnecessary. Yes, it works well enough in theaters. But it also would have worked just as well as a heavily promoted special television event broadcast over Thanksgiving weekend. … In the end, ‘Glee: The 3D Concert Movie’ is actually a perfect representation of ‘Glee’ the TV show: At its best, it’s joyful, uplifting and even, occasionally, moving. And at its worst, it’s a propaganda piece designed to win our undying loyalty to a TV show/cash cow that advocates for the little guy even though it’s clearly turned into a diva.” — Jen Chaney, The Washington Post Check out everything we’ve got on “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
