Earlier this week, Urban Outfitters was forced to issue an apology and pull a sweatshirt off its shelves that it dubbed “vintage.” For what reason? The sweatshirt represented Kent State University and most definitely looked like it had blood splattered all over it, a clear reference to the tragic shootings in May of 1970 that claimed four lives on campus. Yeah. Urban Outfitters actually went there. For some reason. And Urban Outfitters has gone there many times in the past, as this company has become infamous for some seriously scandalous articles of clothing. It’s often been joined by retailers Zara and American Apparel, both of whom should be ashamed of some of their creations. References to the Nazis? To mental illness? To… a bloody vagina ?!? Why did these companies include these controversies on their clothing? To make headlines, we suppose. A giant chestnut tree that comforted Anne Frank as she hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic has collapsed during a rain storm. No one was hurt when the 150-year-old tree fell across a fence at the Anne Frank House. The building she hid in for over two years during the Second World War has since been turned into a museum in the Dutch capital. The tree was one of the few signs of nature Anne could she see as she hid from the Nazis. It is mentioned in her diary, which became a worldwide best-seller after her death in a concentration camp in 1945. “Our chestnut tree is in full blossom. It is covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year,” she wrote in May 1944, not long before she was betrayed to the Nazis. The tree had developed fungus and was set to be felled in 2007 due to concerns for the safety of the thousands of tourists who visit Anne Frank's house each year. Robert Reich on Sunday falsely accused former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich of saying Muslims are like Nazis. As NewsBusters reported last Monday, Gingrich was quoted by the New York Times as saying that building a mosque at Ground Zero “would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust Museum.” Gingrich elaborated on “Fox & Friends” that very morning: Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust Museum in Washington. We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor. There’s no reason for us to accept a mosque next to the World Trade Center. Unfortunately during the Roundtable segment of ABC’s “This Week,” Reich claimed without challenge that Gingrich said, “Muslims are like Nazis” (video follows with transcript and commentary, file photo): ROBERT REICH: But the upsurge in kind of Islamophobia, George, cannot be explained by anything, it seems to me, other than a kind of intolerance that is fed by — I don’t want to say this, don’t want to believe it — but it seems to me the same kind of intolerance that is feeding the anti-immigrant fever in the United States. It comes from a deep-seated fear and anxiety in Americans right now that is rooted, in turn, in the economy. I mean, people are ready to believe Newt Gingrich when he says that the Muslims are like Nazis. That’s outrageous. Actually, what’s outrageous, Bob, is that you would make such a false accusation on national television and nobody would call you out on it. Gingrich did not say that Muslims are like Nazis. He said that allowing a mosque at the site where thousands of innocent Americans were senselessly murdered by radical Islamists would be like allowing the Nazis to put a sign next to the Holocaust Museum. That you would not only misinterpret this as a comparison of all Muslims to Nazis but also say it on national television is the height of intellectual dishonesty, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

A lot of liberals think Glenn Beck is full of, well, manure, but one artist Michael Murphy has taken it further than most. He did a picture of Beck using manure instead of paint. And now, anti-Beck demonstrators have hired Murphy to create a sculpture … honoring Martin Luther King Jr. The Washington Post reported Aug. 17 that Murphy will unveil “The People’s Memorial to King” in Washington, D.C., on Aug 28, the anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Conservative television and radio host Glenn Beck is scheduled to host a rally that day at the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his speech in 1963. The sculpture unveiling is part of a counter-demonstration called “Celebrate the Dream,” which the Post described as “a grass-roots network of artists, community organizers and social activists.” But the Post’s report ignored an intriguing link between the conservative activist and liberal artist: Murphy’s 2009 portrait of Beck, which used “bull manure” as paint. Politico reported on Murphy’s painting in September 2009. On his website , Murphy described the painting as “bull manure and pigment on canvas.” “Murphy, who specializes in large-scale public art installations, said his vision was to create a sculpture that would convey the ideal of ‘unification and bringing people together,'” the Post said of the King sculpture. “Murphy describes the piece as a ‘directional’ sculpture ‘that has four specific vantage points. … If you were to stray from the ideal point of view, the message gets lost,’ Murphy said.” Like this article?
