Happy Birthday Chace Crawford and Nelson Mandela!

A CW star and former South African President both celebrate birthdays today. First, Chace Crawford – who just started shooting Gossip Girl Season 6 – turns 27, as fans don’t need to worry about gifting him with anyone aside from their best wishes. He’s rumored to be dating Erin Andrews , after all. The actor doesn’t need anything else in life. Nelson Mandela, meanwhile, turns 94. The activist spent 27 years in prison and eventually helped turn his nation into a democracy, defeating the evils of apartheid along the way. That’s almost as impressive an achievement as the whole Andrews thing for Crawford. Other stars celebrating birthdays today include: Kristen Bell (32), Vin Diesel (45), Richard Branson (62).

Miley Cyrus’ New Tattoo: Theodore Roosevelt Quote on the Arm!

We hope you’re sitting down for this breaking celebrity news , THG readers: Miley Cyrus has a new tattoo on her arm. Of a Theodore Roosevelt quote, obviously. While heading out of a West Hollywood Pilates class on Tuesday, Cyrus sported her new ink, quoting “Citizenship in a Republic” by the former U.S. president. The excerpt from the 1910 speech on Miles’ forearm reads: “So that his place shall never be with those cold, timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.” No word if the Miley Cyrus tattoo man plans on adding similar ink in honor his young idol, but Miley isn’t alone in finding inspiration in Teddy’s words. That particular speech of Roosevelt’s moved both Richard Nixon and Nelson Mandela, who quoted from it during pivotal moments in their own careers. Nixon referenced it during his resignation, while Mandela used it to inspire South Africa’s rugby team to beat New Zealand at the historic ’95 World Cup. Miley, meanwhile, will presumably use it at some point to send a stirring Tweet to her fans. She has not done so yet, amazingly … give it 45 minutes. What do you think of Miley Cyrus’ new tattoo? Get Well: Nelson Mandela Hospitalized In South Africa For Stomach Ailment

Pray for one of the greatest leaders… Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been hospitalized with a stomach ailment, according to a government statement issued Saturday about the 93-year-old anti-apartheid icon. President Jacob Zuma asked that Mandela’s privacy be respected, and did not say at which hospital Mandela was being treated. Mac Maharaj, Zuma’s spokesman, said he could not elaborate but that he would be issuing regular updates. Mandela became South Africa’s first black president in 1994 after spending 27 years in prison for his fight against racist apartheid rule, and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. His public appearances have become increasingly rare, and he was hospitalized last year for a few days with an acute respiratory infection. We hope he has a full recovery very soon! More On Bossip! Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton Top ‘Most Admired’ Poll

Obama was named most admired living man for third year in a row. By Jayson Rodriguez Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama Photo: Jason Reed-Pool/ Getty Images President Obama can continue to brush the dirt off his shoulder . The embattled politician was named the most admired living man for the third year in a row, according to an annual poll conducted by USA Today and Gallup. Obama bested past presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in the poll. Even though the Democrats lost control of Congress in the November midterm elections, the president was able to pass historic legislation during the subsequent lame-duck session, including repealing the miltary’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy regarding gay soldiers. Ever since Obama took office he has placed first in the poll; the 44th President of the United States, however, has seen his percentages in the poll dip each year, from a high of 32 percent in 2008 to 22 percent this past year (Bush and Clinton took 5 percent and 4 percent, respectively). Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has proven to be more dominant than Obama on the women’s side. The former First Lady notched the most admired living woman title for the ninth year in a row. She narrowly slipped past 2012 presidential hopeful Sarah Palin and media mogul Oprah Winfrey. Overall, Clinton has topped the poll 15 times since 1992. Rounding out the top 10 on the men’s side were Nelson Mandela, Pope Benedict XVI, former president Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama, the Reverend Billy Graham, Glenn Beck and Bill Gates. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Queen Elizabeth, Margaret Thatcher, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, Burmese democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi and Angelina Jolie comprise the top 10 most admired women. The results are based on telephone surveys with a random sample of 1,019 American adults.

Shirley Sherrod Reminds CNN’s Gergen of Nelson Mandela

Exhibiting an extreme case of the media euphoria over Shirley Sherrod’s vindication, moments before Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack appeared before the cameras CNN senior political analyst David Gergen gushed to Rick Sanchez: I have to tell you, Rick, I don’t want to put her on too high a pedestal. I don’t think she would want that. But I kept thinking about Nelson Mandela as I heard her story, because he had to overcome the same sort of hatred on both sides. And he became this larger-than-life figure and I think we all loved him and revered him because he was able to grow like that. And there is that quality about her story. 48 hours without a job just like 27 years in prison. And how did she experience “hatred on both sides?” Gergen continued, at about 4:45 PM EDT Wednesday afternoon on CNN’s Rick’s List: And as you know, so many of us who come from the South have lived with race and have had to sort of struggle, sometimes had to struggle in our souls to reach this plane. And she sort of reached this place of ascendance, which I really respect in her. Being compared to Mandela is the ultimate tribute from a liberal. In the introduction to his book, ‘Mandela’s Way: Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage,’ which was published in April, Time magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel enthused : It is impossible to write about Nelson Mandela these days and not compare him to another potentially transformational black leader, Barack Obama. The parallels are many… While it took twenty-seven years in prison to mold the Nelson Mandela we know, the forty-eight-year-old American President seems to have achieved a Mandela-like temperament without the long years of sacrifice. Obama’s self-discipline, his willingness to listen and to share credit, his inclusion of his rivals in his administration, and his belief that people want things explained, all seem like a twenty-first century version of Mandela’s values and persona.
