Reading through material from the “Turn Off Fox” campaign, one gets the very clear impression that the folks at the Fox News Channel are bold-faced liars. They have “no regard for the truth,” and uses “half-truths” to push a “stream of misinformation” and “distortions of the truth.” Turn Off Fox is a project started by Color of Change, the far-left political organization founded by neo-Marxist and black liberation theologist Van Jones. Despite Turn Off Fox’s righteous indignation, the same document making the above accusations pushes blatant misinformation about both Fox and the Tea Party movement. Got that? The Turn Off Fox campaign wants FNC to tell the truth, and uses demonstrable falsehoods to bolster its case. The document accusing Fox of pushing misinformation claims that Bill O’Reilly got former USDA official Shirley Sherrod fired, and claims that Tea Party protesters shouted racial slurs and spit on black congressmen outside the Capitol. Both claims have been thoroughly debunked. Turn Off Fox claims that “Fox News hosts Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity were the first to air maliciously edited video of Shirley Sherrod’s speech to the Georgia NAACP – video that cost Sherrod her job with the USDA.” Clearly, the implication is that Fox was responsible for Sherrod’s ouster. Granted, the document doesn’t actually say that Sherrod was fired because of O’Reilly’s or Hannity’s work, only that they were the first to air the video, which is true. But the document is an attempt to single out Fox News for supposed wrongdoing. So if other cable networks did the same thing Fox did, there would be no reason to mention it in this document. And as Howard Kurtz wrote , Fox did not air the video in question until after Sherrod resigned. Fox was joined by numerous other television news shows, which all aired the viral clip. In other words, the role Fox News played in Sherrod’s resignation was no larger than any other cable news channel. Call Turn Off Fox’s claim a lie, call it a half truth, call it what you like. But the fact is, the document pushes the false notion that Fox was uniquely responsible (among television news channels) for the Sherrod controversy. That claim is nothing short of false. The document goes on to offer flimsy evidence linking Fox News to the Tea Party movement. It says the following about the latter: “As the House of Representatives deliberated over health care legislation this past spring, some Tea Party members gathered outside the Capitol shouted ‘Ni**er!’ at black congressmen.” The document also claims that “One of the protesters spat on Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver.” Both of those claims are false. Or, at the very least, there is no evidence to support either claim. Numerous videos of the protest in question give no indication that any racial slur was uttered, or that any protester spit on Congressman Cleaver. The New York Times recently issued a retraction to that effect, noting the lack of evidence for a claim that most media outlets – but not Fox! – were willing to unquestionably parrot for so long. The “Turn Off Fox” campaign is the latest effort in Color of Change’s continuing vendetta against Fox News. This is the same organization that tried to get Glenn Beck taken off the air by targeting Fox’s advertisers. These blatant factual inaccuracies raise serious questions regarding Color of Change’s credibility. How can it accuse Fox of spreading misinformation, while using misinformation to bolster its case? This document suggests that, contrary to Color of Change’s claims, this is little more than a political effort designed to stifle speech the group’s far-left members don’t like. A request for comment from Color of Change was not returned by deadline.

The theater of the Sherrods continues. Earlier today, Shirley Sherrod, who, according to the current version of ruling class wisdom, was prematurely evacuated from the USDA by Director Tom Vilsack, decided not to accept an offer to return to the agency. Instead, according to Politico’s Matt Negrin , “she hasn’t accepted the department’s offer to work there again, but that she wants ‘some type of relationship’ with it later.” We wouldn’t closure or anything, would we? Five weeks or so have intervened since Andrew Breitbart posted a video excerpt of Sherrod’s speech at an NAACP event. (It should be noted USAactionnews.com actually posted the video earlier; though their link has been taken down, their original July 15 tweet is here .) In that time, the establishment press has either seriously downplayed or totally ignored the several important items relating to the background and outlook of Ms. Sherrod and her husband Charles. The earliest discovery was Shirley Sherrod was appointed to her position as Georgia Director of Rural Development on July 25, 2009. That appointment came mere days after her former co-op farm New Communities, Inc. (NCI) ” won a thirteen million dollar settlement in the minority farmers law suit Pigford vs Vilsack .” This settlement included “$150,000 each to Shirley and Charles for pain and suffering.” How odd, to say the least, for a victorious plaintiff to end up working for the losing defendant. Then, about a week after Breitbart’s video drop, another video surfaced , this time of Charles. Delivering the keynote address at a “race and law conference” at the University of Virginia School of Law, Sherrod his audience: (To young African-Americans in the audience) “Please find a way, find a way that we can trust each other. So that our monies can work for our total liberation. … Our labor and our monies and our contracts usually end up in white folks’ hands and pockets. When will we trust our own?” “… we must stop the white man and his Uncle Toms from stealing our elections. We must not be afraid to vote black.” Charming. Finally, there were the shocking accusations by black activist and Cal State professor Ron Wilkins at Counterpunch that during at least the late 1960s and early 1970s, NCI “under-paid, mistreated and fired black laborers–many of them less than 16 years of age–in the same fields of southwest Georgia where their ancestors suffered under chattel slavery.” Wilkins cited tangible, same-time evidence that NCI was struck by the United Farm Workers. An article in a September 28, 1974 UFW publication (“Children Farm Workers Strike Black Co-op”) leveled the following accusations directly at Charles Sherrod (the first word in the original is “through,” which is erroneous): Though several of the cooperative’s funding organization’s are pressuring Charles Sherrod, the farm’s manager, to reach a settlement with the strikers, he remains unwilling to negotiate. With so few scabs left in New Community’s (sic) fields, the UFW first strike in the southeast area (outside of Florida) may bring the first of many UFW contracts to these fields that were once harvested by slave labor. NCI employed scab labor, and somehow that’s not worth reporting. Uh-huh. Wilkins makes it clear that Shirley Sherrod was also heavily involved in NCI’s operations: “Shirley Sherrod was New Communities Inc. store manager during the 1970s. As such, Mrs. Sherrod was a key member of the NCI administrative team, which exploited and abused the workforce in the field.” For this, the Sherrods and NCI deserved $13 million? As of about 3 PM Eastern Time, a Google News search on “Sherrod Vilsack” (not in quotes; sorted in date order) returned 290 items (search results saved at my host for future reference). A search on “Sherrod Vilsack Wilkins” (not in quotes; sorted in date order) returned one result ( also saved ) — my August 3 Washington Examiner blog post about NCI’s alleged worker exploitation. Update: As of 6:20 p.m., the search results ( sherrod vilsack ; sherrod vilsack wilkins ) were virtually identical. If the non-coverage of the items raised above continues, this journalistic dereliction of duty will end up at or near the top of the list of the most disgraceful establishment press cover-ups I’ve ever seen. The Theater of the Sherrod(s) is apparently not over. At AL.com last night, Mike Tomberlin of the Birmingham News reported the following : Former USDA employee Shirley Sherrod says she will meet Tuesday with agriculture secretary Shirley Sherrod, the former USDA rural development director for Georgia, said today she plans to meet Tuesday with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to discuss a new job offer. … Sherrod today spoke in the Sumter County town of Epes at an event hosted by the Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund. Ben Jealous, executive director of the NAACP, shared the stage with Sherrod during a panel discussion. Sherrod said she had no ill feelings toward the NAACP or President Barack Obama. It the meeting does indeed occur, it will be an interesting test of establishment media credibility, given the accusations leveled at Ms. Sherrod and her husband Charles by Ron Wilkins at the leftist publication Counterpunch several weeks ago . Here are some of the specifics: The Other Side of Shirley Sherrod … The swirling controversy over the racist dismissal of Shirley Sherrod from her USDA post has obscured her profoundly oppositional behavior toward black agricultural workers in the 1970s. What most of Mrs. Sherrod’s supporters are not aware of is the elitist and anti-black-labor role that she and fellow managers of New Communities Inc. (NCI) played. These individuals under-paid, mistreated and fired black laborers–many of them less than 16 years of age–in the same fields of southwest Georgia where their ancestors suffered under chattel slavery. … Mrs. Sherrod says she began to see poverty as more central than race. So, should indigent black child farm laborers warrant less reflection by Mrs. Sherrod? What lessons does she have to share from her tenure as management when she had power over her own people working under deplorable conditions at the same New Communities, Inc.(NCI) identified in the current issue? Shirley Sherrod could have included this chapter of her history in the same confession speech. Justice and integrity require at least as much accountability from Mrs. Sherrod to the poor black farm workers of NCI as to the white farmers she came to befriend. This lack of full disclosure of the whole truth is a “sin of omission” that trivializes the suffering of poor black farm workers and exacerbates the offenses of NCI. Shirley Sherrod was New Communities Inc. store manager during the 1970s. As such, Mrs. Sherrod was a key member of the NCI administrative team, which exploited and abused the workforce in the field. The 6,000 acre New Communities Inc. in Lee County promoted itself during the latter part of the 1960s and throughout the 70s as a land trust committed to improving the lives of the rural black poor. Underneath this facade, the young and old worked long hours with few breaks, the pay averaged sixty-seven cents an hour, fieldwork behind equipment spraying pesticides was commonplace and workers expressing dissatisfaction were fired without recourse. … Worker protest at New Communities eventually garnered some assistance from the United Farm Workers Union in nearby Florida in the person of one of its most formidable organizers, black State Director, the late Mack Lyons. The September 28, 1974 UFW newspaper El Malcriado, page two, reported on the worker’s strike (“Children Farm Workers Strike Black Co-op”) and the UFW stepped in to protect black farm workers from exploitation by NCI. Fearful of both UFW efforts to unionize NCI’s labor force and scrutiny by the Georgia State Wage and Hour Division, the Sherrods and NCI management hastily issued checks in varying amounts to strikers to makeup ostensibly for minimum wage differentials. It is bitter irony that the Sherrods have succeeded in being awarded $300,000 following a discrimination lawsuit, while Mrs. Hawkins and other impoverished NCI black laborers whom NCI exploited were never adequately compensated for their “pain and suffering”. In addition to the “pain and suffering” payments Wilkins noted, NCI “won a thirteen million dollar settlement in the minority farmers law suit Pigford vs Vilsack.” This occurred in late July of last year, just a few days before Sherrod was hired by Vilsack to be the USDA’s Georgia Director for Rural Development. The UFW accused the Sherrods of using scab labor. Wilkins wrapped up his Counterpunch column with a challenge: Ask Shirley Sherrod about this part of her history. I know this story well, for I was one of those workers at NCI. Will the establishment press follow up? Based on the non-coverage of Wilkins’s accusations during past three weeks, the prognosis is: “Very doubtful.” A Google News search on “Ron Wilkins” (in quotes) returns all of 10 items , eight of which relate to the Cal State professor’s accusations. Three of those eight cover two items authored by yours truly, including this August 8 NewsBusters post . Of the remaining five, three are posts at center-right blogs ( NCPPR , American Thinker , Patriot Post ). There is also an excerpt at the Daily Caller , plus an item at Digital Journal . A search on “Ron Wilkins” (not in quotes) at the New York Times returns nothing relevant . It’s virtually inconceivable that such damaging baggage would be ignored if a conservative, Republican, or important businessperson had been similarly accused of worker exploitation. The Associated Press has picked the Birmingham News item, which is on the wire service’s raw national feed. There are now no valid excuses for ignoring what Wilkins has alleged. Rachel Maddow on Friday highly-edited a video from the previous evening’s “O’Reilly Factor” in order to make the Fox News host look racist. For some background, Bill O’Reilly wrote a syndicated column Friday in which he chastized Maddow and David Letterman for “without a shred of evidence” claiming on CBS’s “Late Show” Tuesday that FNC intentionally runs stories about “scary black people” in order to frighten white folks into voting for conservatives. Maddow responded by calling this “bullpucky,” and presented video “evidence” from “Factor” programs to prove that this indeed is what Fox does. Unfortunately, in the most damning clip, Maddow’s minions conveniently edited out that O’Reilly was referring to a recent Gallup poll about how blacks and whites have differing views of President Obama. Ironically, this came moments after Maddow scolded O’Reilly for airing the edited version of former USDA official Shirley Sherrod on his July 19 program (videos follow with transcripts and commentary): RACHEL MADDOW, HOST: This time, the case against me is in his nationally syndicated column which I`m sure is read by millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of people. The headline is, quote, “Only far-left loons scared of Fox News.” Guess who the loon is? Yes. Talking about me on David Letterman`s show this week, Mr. O`Reilly says, quote, “Speaking with far-left MSNBC news commentator, Rachel Maddow on his program, Dave listened as she put forth the preposterous theory that wants to frighten white Americans by reporting negatively about black Americans.” “In the past, paranoid, dishonest rants like that would have been dismissed as fringe-speak. But not anymore. Without a shred of evidence, a guest on Letterman`s “Late Show,” which by the way, gets trounced in the ratings by Fox News Channel every night, defines an entire news organization as a racist enterprise and Letterman goes along.” Mr. O`Reilly`s repeated insistence that must be right because Fox has high ratings is a many-splendored thing particularly because this week – if you believe Mr. O`Reilly, this week means we`re all wrong and only sharksploitation(ph) is right. But there is something else going on here that isn`t just an ad populum fallacy about ratings or an ad hominem collateral swipe at the lovely creature that is the loon. It is something stupid, something stupid enough that it doesn`t even get dressed up in Latin phrasing. It`s him saying that there`s no evidence to back up my claim that Fox News consistently runs stories it says are news, but that nobody else really covers, stories that are ginned-up, exaggerated, caricatured, in some cases, just flat-out made-up scare stories designed to make white people feel afraid of black people, designed to make it seem like black people, or in some cases, immigrants are threatening white people and taking what is rightfully theirs. You may not like that diagnosis of what Fox has been up to, but to say there`s no evidence, not a shred of evidence, as he said, that`s bullpucky. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) O`REILLY: Speaking at an NAACP event in March, Department of Agriculture official Shirley Sherrod was caught on tape saying something very disturbing. Seems a white farmer in Georgia had requested government assistance from Ms. Sherrod. Wow. Well, that is simply unacceptable and Ms. Sherrod must resign immediately. (END VIDEO CLIP) MADDOW: Of course, the Shirley Sherrod story ended up being exposed as total bullpucky, manufactured by nifty video editing. Mr. O`Reilly had to apologize for that statement. But it`s not like the Shirley Sherrod story stands alone. Readers are encouraged to remember her comment “exposed as total bullpucky, manufactured by nifty video editing.” Also, if this was an example of Fox trying to scare white people, why did O’Reilly apologize the next day? Not every member of the news media that broadcast the original Sherrod video clip issued an on air apology like O’Reilly, but I digress: (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) O`REILLY: The collapse of ACORN – that is the subject of this evening`s “Talking Points Memo.” Here`s the latest scandal. You`re not going to believe it. Because federal authorities have not done much policing of ACORN, two private citizens, James O`Keefe and Hannah Giles, launch an undercover sting investigation themselves. The two pose as a prostitute and a pimp and asked a number of ACORN officials to help them get housing for a prostitution enterprise. The latest sting was in California, where an ACORN employee engaged the young woman posing as a prostitute. ACORN is a tax-exempt organization that should immediately lose that status. And Attorney General Holder should begin an intense investigation. (END VIDEO CLIP) MADDOW: Of course, the ACORN story ended up being exposed as total bullpucky, too, also manufactured by nifty video editing. Remember after the California attorney general looked into the full tapes and then arrested all those ACORN folks for those crimes that Bill O`Reilly showed them committing on tape? Yes, you don`t remember that? Me, neither, because it never happened. Bullpucky again. But still, very scary. Readers are encouraged to once again remember Maddow’s phrase here “total bullpucky, too, also manufactured by nifty video editing.” Secondly, that the far-left Jerry Brown chose not to prosecute ACORN employees by no means invalidates the corruption that was exposed at this organization or vindicates it. A Democrat-controlled Congress and a Democrat President have still not lifted the government ban on ACORN funding. Beyond this, the notion that O’Reilly reporting this matter was racially motivated is in itself racist. But Maddow and her ilk seem to miss this irony when they point such fingers at others: (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) O`REILLY: A guy like Van Jones who is a friend of the president, and he comes in and he`s a hardcore Marxist. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He`s not a hardcore Marxist. O`REILLY: He is. He admits it. All I keep hearing is from people like Eugene Robinson who traffics in racism every time you turn around. Once again, the idea that reporting on Van Jones was to scare white people is pathetic. Are all reports concerning black people involved in wrong-doing racist? As such, this was another tremendously weak point by Maddow in no way proving O’Reilly was trying to scare white people. But here’s the best part: O’REILLY: White Americans don`t like the huge expansion of the federal government. They also oppose the big spending increases that the president has imposed. It`s simple. White Americans fear government control. They don`t want the feds telling them what to do and they don`t want a bankrupt nation. For decades, African-Americans have supported a bigger federal government so it can impose social justice. The vast majority of blacks want money spent to level the playing field, to redistribute income from the white establishment to their precincts. (END VIDEO CLIP) MADDOW: Black people want white people`s money. They want to redistribute income from the white establishment to their precincts. But remember, Mr. O`Reilly says there is not a shred of evidence that Fox News hypes stories about scary black people taking white people`s stuff. I am not interested in playing cable news insult ping pong with Mr. O`Reilly. But as much as he keeps insisting that I`m no one worth arguing with, that I`m an uber-leftist – he called me that in his column, and a loon twice now. And a slightly larger percentage of one percent of the population watches his show than the proportion of one percent of the population that watches my show, for all he complains about how unimportant I am, my criticism scares white people on purpose to politically benefit conservatives, damn the consequences for the country, that criticism appears to have struck a nerve over at Fox. It appears to have gotten under Mr. O`Reilly`s skin. Good. Well, not so fast, Rach, for why didn’t you provide the full context of that last report by O’Reilly? Here is the unedited “Talking Points Memo” from Thursday. Notice just how much different this really is from the highly-edited version Maddow dishonestly showed her viewers: O’REILLY: Hi, I’m Bill O’Reilly. Thanks for watching us tonight. Black and white Americans differ over President Obama. That is the subject of this evening’s “Talking Points Memo”. A new Gallup poll says 88 percent of African-Americans continue to support President Obama, but just 38 percent of white Americans feel the president is doing a good job. That is a 50 point differential in the president’s job approval rating, which is stunning. So what is going on? Let’s take the white situation first. According to the polls, most white Americans don’t like the huge expansion of the federal government. They also oppose the big spending increases that the president has imposed. It’s simple. White Americans fear government control. They don’t want the Feds telling them what to do. And they don’t want a bankrupt nation. That attitude was on display in Missouri this week when 71 percent of the voters approved a state statute blocking the federal government from forcing them to buy health insurance. 71 percent said no to that. Since Obamacare is the centerpiece of the president’s domestic strategy so far, you can see he’s in some trouble. But black America has a totally different view. For decades, African- Americans have supported a bigger federal government, so it can impose social justice. A vast majority of blacks want money spent to level the playing field, to redistribute income from the white establishment to their precincts, and to provide better education and health care at government expense. So the African-American voter generally loves what President Obama is doing. As for Hispanic-Americans, 54 percent now support Mr. Obama but that is down nine points since April. The social justice component is there as well. There’s no question that there are now two Americas. The minority community continues to believe that society is not completely fair to them. And they want a huge government apparatus to change that. And while the white community may sympathize with the minority situation, they apparently believe that more harm than good is being done to the country with the cost of social justice programs. My own belief is that President Obama is well intentioned, but if the wild spending continues, this country will be gravely damaged. As far as social justice is concerned, strict oversight on fair rules, but not the imposition of expensive entitlements is the answer. The USA is the strongest country on earth because of self reliance and the industry of honest, hard working people, who don’t want to be told how to live. Independence and self-reliance is what has made this country great, powerful and generous. And that’s the Memo. As such, O’Reilly was commenting about a Gallup survey just released Tuesday with the title, “Blacks and Whites Continue to Differ Sharply on Obama.” By the end of his “Memo,” he was even crediting Obama with being “well intentioned.” Sound “scary” to you? As for Gallup, here’s what it reported: President Obama’s job approval rating averaged 88% among blacks and 38% among whites in July, a 50-percentage-point difference that has been consistent in recent months but is much larger than in the initial months of the Obama presidency. Obama’s job approval ratings among blacks, whites, and Hispanics in July are all at their lowest levels to date, although the overwhelming majority of blacks still approve. Maybe Maddow should call the Gallup folks racist, too. Regardless, Maddow and her minions completely removed this context from the video they edited thereby dramatically altering what O’Reilly said. Isn’t that just as bad as what the anonymous person that sent the excerpted Sherrod video to Andrew Breitbart did? Maybe more importantly, isn’t this actually worse than what Fox and every other news outlet did with the Sherrod video, for none of them were involved in the editing. In Maddow’s case, her own staff edited out major portions of O’Reilly’s opening remarks on Thursday completely changing the meaning of his words. This MSNBC host should certainly not be pointing fingers at others for bullpucky manufactured by nifty video editing when she and her staff are doing the very same thing. With this in mind, maybe Maddow on Monday should play the entire video for her audience and apologize to O’Reilly. Readers are advised to not hold their breath.

Rachel Maddow on Tuesday told David Letterman that scaring white people is good politics for conservatives. After the host of CBS’s “Late Show” asked his perilously biased guest about the Andrew Breitbart-Shirley Sherrod affair, the MSNBCer predictably pointed her accusatory finger at Fox News and everybody on the right. “The idea is you sort of rile up the white base to be afraid of an other, to be afraid of the scary immigrants or scary black people,” Maddow said. “Somebody coming to take what is white people’s rightful property,” she continued. “And you get them riled up so they feel like they need to vote in self-defense, and they vote for conservative candidates because of that fear” (video follows with partial transcript and commentary, h/t TVNewser ): RACHEL MADDOW: They I think bear a lot of responsibility, and I think that with Fox in particular it’s part of a pattern. They keep running these stories about for lack of a better phrase scary black people, about scary black people at the USDA discriminating against white farmers and scary black people stopping white people from voting and scary black people getting like stealing the election the whole ACORN scandal. There’s this theme… DAVID LETTERMAN: Oh, that’s right. This guy has done it before. MADDOW: It was the ACORN like guy supposedly dressed up as a pimp who wasn’t dressed up as a pimp. LETTERMAN: So, in, in, in the collective ideology of Fox and others, to what end? What is the objective of this sort of nonsense? MADDOW: Scaring white people is good politics on the conservative side of the spectrum, and it always has been. The idea is you sort of rile up the white base to be afraid of an other, to be afraid of the scary immigrants or scary black people. Somebody coming to take what is white people’s rightful property. Or rights. And you get them riled up so they feel like they need to vote in self-defense, and they vote for conservative candidates because of that fear. I mean we’ve been doing it for decades. We should be smarter. Our kids should be smarter. Their kids should be smarter. But yet, these people are continuing to fan this flame and excuse me for mixing metaphors here that is cancer. I mean leave it alone. Let it go away. It’s not right. Why, there are other problems now that need to be addressed. ( Applause ) MADDOW: I think that, I mean, I think you’re totally right. It should get better. And the way it’s going to get better is not by slime balls being less slimy. There’s always going to be Breitbarts and Fox Newses. That’s going to happen. What’s different now is actually CNN, CNN spent the whole day the day that day broke debunking it. They got Shirley Sherrod on the air. They talked about what she was really saying. They showed how it was edited together wrongly. MSNBC did the same thing. But it was one of these things where actually I think Breitbart and Fox came off worse for having done that. And so maybe that’s the best, that’s the best antidote is just by sheer mockery of the people who do it. LETTERMAN: And then in response, Bill O’Reilly, who has been on this show many times and I have a theory about Bill O’Reilly, smart guy. And I think he knows better than what he’s doing, but he’s just found a place to, you know, make a living. And if, if you needed a, he’d be a weatherman if the money was right or he’d do sports if the money was right. He’s just doing this because that’s where the money is. I don’t think you can be as smart as he is and actually believe what he believes. Isn’t it wonderful that America has people like Maddow and Letterman around to propagandize the public? What would we do without them?

Keith Olbermann interrupted his much-needed vacation Wednesday to surprise his few viewers with a “Special Comment” about the forced resignation of USDA official Shirley Sherrod. Quite predictably, his greater than twelve minute tirade largely focused on Fox News and Andrew Breitbart — the latter repeatedly referred to as “scum” as well as a “pornographer of propaganda” — who he claimed “assassinated” Sherrod. After starting his rant by pompously comparing the former USDA official to Alfred Dreyfus, the French artillery officer falsely accused of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island, the “Countdown” host tore into almost everyone on the planet (video follows with partial transcript and commentary): KEITH OLBERMANN: No matter how much of a stretch it is to compare Shirley Sherrod to Alfred Dreyfus, mistake it not: Shirley Sherrod has been to her own Devil’s Island. And thanks to the perpetual fraud machine that is Fox News and the scum that is this assassin Breitbart, there will be a portion of this country – the mindless, the hateful, the reactionary, the racist – to whom she is forever convicted and ever imprisoned….A reputation assassinated by Fox News, assassinated by that scum Breitbart, assassinated by all their meager-brained imitators on other channels and other websites, their limp fellow travelers who never asked questions first but simply shot and shot and shot and shot and laughed. Let me make this utterly clear: what you see on Fox News, what you read on right-wing websites is the utter and complete perversion of journalism and it can have no place in a civilized society. It is words crashed together never to inform, only to inflame. It is a political guillotine. It is the manipulation of reality to make the racists seem benevolent, and to convict the benevolent as racists, even if her words must be edited, filleted, stripped of all context, rearranged, fabricated and falsified to do so. What you see on Fox News, what you read on right-wing websites is a manipulation, not just of a story, not just on behalf of a political philosophy, manipulation of a society. It’s intentional redirection from reality and progress to a paranoid delusion and the fomenting of hatred of Americans by Americans and nearly every last word of it is never in any tangible sense true. Ask Shirley Sherrod. C’mon! Dreyfus spent four years of hell on Devil’s Island, and was exonerated eleven years after his conviction. Seems astonishingly extreme to compare what Sherrod has gone through in the past 48 hours to that. The way things are looking, the former USDA official will likely be able to leverage this incident into quite a personal fortune if she plays her cards right. Just imagine the book and movie offers that could be in her future. But that wasn’t the only absurdity on display Wednesday evening as it really was the height of gall for Olbermann to point fingers at Breitbart for publishing an edited video at his website when two weeks ago the “Countdown” host cherry picked from a Rush Limbaugh radio transcript to make the conservative talk show host look racist. Talk about words being “edited, filleted, stripped of all context, rearranged, fabricated and falsified!” Now that REALLY is the pot calling the kettle black. On that same night, Olbermann also falsified history to mock Nevada senatorial candidate Sharron Angle AND got so many things wrong concerning oil subsidies and BP that PolitiFact almost gave him a “Pants on Fire” rating days later. As such, Olbermann chastising anyone about journalistic ethics and integrity is like a porn star lecturing teenagers about the virtues of abstinence. Moving back to Wednesday’s insanity, the “Countdown” host later scolded NAACP President Ben Jealous for not talking to the white farmer that Sherrod spoke of in her March 27 address to the civil rights organization. He did the same for Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for not looking at the entire video in question. Yet, as he accused seemingly everyone of wrongdoing — which, by the way, included President Obama and MSNBC — Olbermann never once told viewers if HE had spoken to Sherrod, the farmer in question, or seen the entire video. What research had Olbermann done while on vacation to come to the conclusion that Sherrod was 100 percent innocent and all of her accusers — regardless of the ones that are now backpedaling — were 100 percent wrong? Wasn’t Olbermann doing exactly what he was scolding others for: offering an opinion without all the facts? Well, what should we expect of a man so desperately in need of a vacation after only two days off? With this in mind, as much as we’ll miss him, might we suggest he complete his R&R before offering any more “special comments?” After all, as much as he needed a vacation, America required some time off from his psychotic rantings. Honestly, Keith, two days wasn’t enough. Go back to bed.

Exhibiting an extreme case of the media euphoria over Shirley Sherrod’s vindication, moments before Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack appeared before the cameras CNN senior political analyst David Gergen gushed to Rick Sanchez: I have to tell you, Rick, I don’t want to put her on too high a pedestal. I don’t think she would want that. But I kept thinking about Nelson Mandela as I heard her story, because he had to overcome the same sort of hatred on both sides. And he became this larger-than-life figure and I think we all loved him and revered him because he was able to grow like that. And there is that quality about her story. 48 hours without a job just like 27 years in prison. And how did she experience “hatred on both sides?” Gergen continued, at about 4:45 PM EDT Wednesday afternoon on CNN’s Rick’s List: And as you know, so many of us who come from the South have lived with race and have had to sort of struggle, sometimes had to struggle in our souls to reach this plane. And she sort of reached this place of ascendance, which I really respect in her. Being compared to Mandela is the ultimate tribute from a liberal. In the introduction to his book, ‘Mandela’s Way: Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage,’ which was published in April, Time magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel enthused : It is impossible to write about Nelson Mandela these days and not compare him to another potentially transformational black leader, Barack Obama. The parallels are many… While it took twenty-seven years in prison to mold the Nelson Mandela we know, the forty-eight-year-old American President seems to have achieved a Mandela-like temperament without the long years of sacrifice. Obama’s self-discipline, his willingness to listen and to share credit, his inclusion of his rivals in his administration, and his belief that people want things explained, all seem like a twenty-first century version of Mandela’s values and persona.
