Happy 38th Birthday Pharrell!

Excerpt from:

Pharrell Williams , one-half of The Neptunes production team, celebrates his 38th birthday today.  Pharrell may have only fully been part of the mainstream music consciousness for the last 10 years, but he’s been hard at work for nearly 20 years. Take a look back at some of Pharrell’s early work! In 1992, Pharrell wrote Teddy Riley ‘s rap in the hit Wreckx-N-Effect single “Rump Shaker.”  The song sold over 2 million copies and hit number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart. In 1992, Pharrell rapped on a rare remix of SWV’s “Right Here.”  Part of his verse was later chopped up and used on the hit “Right Here/Human Nature” remix. Pharrell also co-wrote and co-produced Blackstreet’s 1994 single “Tonight’s The Night” featuring SWV and Craig Mack. Pharrell’s work with SWV continued on their 1996 single “Use Your Heart”, which Pharrell and his Neptunes cohort, Chad Hugo, wrote and produced. Pharrell and Chad Hugo co-wrote and produced Total’s single “When Boy Meets Girl” in 1996, which became a minor R&B hit. However, the distinctive Neptunes sound began to really take shape with Ma$e’s 1997 single “Lookin’ At Me.”  The song was a top 10 hit and helped make Ma$e a household name. The Neptunes hit-making streak really kicked into high gear with Nore’s “Superthug,” released in 1998. From that point on Pharrell became unstoppable, helping produce, write, or remix songs for artists ranging from Jay-Z to Britney Spears to Ol’ Dirty Bastard to Prince, as well as his own solo album and the N*E*R*D projects.  Pharrell also began nurturing talent, beginning with Kelis in 1999, whose first two albums were produced entirely by The Neptunes. Around the same time that Kelis’ debut album, Kaleidoscope , came out, Pharrell was working with Clipse on their first album, Exclusive Audio Footage , which remains unreleased to this day, though one single, “The Funeral,” was released from the project. The story of Pharrell and the Neptunes continues to this day as Pharrell has diversified his interests into clothing lines (Billionaire Boys Club), websites ( Kidult.com ), and furniture design.  We look forward to all of Pharrell’s future projects! New Justin Timberlake Song ‘Take You Down’ Leaks

Club-ready tune was reportedly produced by the Neptunes. By James Dinh Justin Timberlake Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ FilmMagic Justin Timberlake has said over and over again that he’s not ready to record a new album. Nonetheless, that hasn’t stopped the pop star-turned-actor from hitting the studio for collaborations with other artists and doing some recording here and there for himself. His latest musical serving to appease his hungry fans is a track called “Take You Down,” which leaked online Thursday (December 30). Timberlake opens the drum-heavy track with a summon to all the girls, before a female vocalist echoes the matching line with a series of stuttering “uh-oh’s.” The song, reportedly produced by the Neptunes, finds JT luring, tempting and somewhat challenging his female interest. “I’ve seen my magic/ What’s your looks and your religion?/ And I want you to understand that I can make you feel better/ So it’s me and you, my place, sexiness all day/ I’mma do whatever you like, if you cater to me all night, girl,” he sings during the second verse. In addition to production credits, various Internet blogs have reported that “Take You Down” may in fact be a demo as opposed to one of the 29-year-old’s own songs. Timberlake recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times about fans who feel like the star has neglected his musical calling. “They’re looking at me like, ‘Why aren’t you staying with one path?’ ” he said. “They look at me like I’m ungrateful for my music career because I want to do film.” Until JT feels ready to hit the studio to record the follow-up to 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, fans will have to make do with the singer’s scarce musical ventures. His next offering may be a collaboration with Drake , who recently revealed, “I’ve always wanted to work with him, and it’s in the works right now: Me and Justin Timberlake will probably have a song soon.” What do you think of “Take You Down”? Kelis Says Working With Will.I.Am On Flesh Tone ‘Felt Right’

‘He’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,’ she says of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News Kelis’ funky musical style and the Neptunes’ quirky production always seemed like the perfect fit, as evident on hits like the sprightly “Caught Out There” and the rumbling “Milkshake.” But the singer parted ways with Pharrell and Chad Hugo on her last album, 2006’s Kelis Was Here. For her forthcoming offering, Flesh Tone, Kelis has hooked up with a different super-producer: the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am. The pair worked together in the past , but now, Kelis is signed to Will’s label through Interscope Records. “Will and I worked on my last album together, and I love the fact that — a lot of producers don’t know music. They might know the genre that they’re doing, but he’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,” Kelis told MTV News about her new boss. “There’s not a song you can mention or an era of music that you can mention that he doesn’t know about or doesn’t understand what made it that [successful]. I think that’s the key in trying to do something fresh.” As a result of the lead Pea’s musical knowledge, Kelis described their union as “comfortable” and said it “felt right.” So far, Kelis revealed she’s been working with producers Free School, who are also signed to Will.I.Am’s label, on an uptempo collection of tracks slated for Flesh Tone. Late last year, Kelis hinted that her next album would feature a “futuristic disco” sound . Recently, she spoke to MTV News about her latest single, “Acapella,” which topped the Billboard Dance & Club Songs chart. Kelis said the feedback for the David Guetta-produced electronic number has been welcome. “I knew that I loved it, and I felt really good about it,” she said. “It’s exciting to see that people feel what you feel. That’s always encouraging. But I had no idea that that would happen that quickly like that. I just knew that the song felt really real for me.” What do think about the direction Kelis is taking her music? Who else should she work with besides Will.I.Am? Let us know in the comments below! Kelis Takes Her Dance Hit ‘Acapella’ To Winter Music Conference

Singer, who hits WMC 2010 later this week, says ‘Acapella’ is a ‘really great song to perform.’ By Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News When Kelis ‘ newest single, “Acapella,” topped the Billboard Dance & Club Songs chart earlier this month, it was the singer’s first chart-topper since 2003’s “Milkshake.” Oddly enough, it started as just a Dave Guetta beat she had lying around and a melody she couldn’t quite get out of her head. “I’ve known Guetta for a long time just as a DJ in France, just partying in Paris and just being out there,” Kelis recalled. “I didn’t even know he was doing a record until a friend of mine sent me some beats, and he was like, ‘Guetta would love for you to write something for his album.’ I just started writing to a bunch of them, and I just heard this beat, and there was no melody to it. It was just a beat. I just had this melody that came to me right away, so I just laid this melody down really quick and just forgot about it and kept moving and doing stuff.” Kelis said she listened to it every day in the studio and tried to write something to it. She said “Acapella” eventually came to her. She never expected much would come of it — especially not a #1 record. “I knew that I loved it, and I felt really good about it,” she said. “It’s exciting to see that people feel what you feel. That’s always encouraging. But I had no idea that that would happen that quickly like that. I just knew that the song felt really real for me.” “Acapella” is the lead single from Kelis’ newest album, Flesh Tone. The album, which she expects to be released in June, is her first under Will.I.Am’s Will.I.Am Music Group. Kelis worked with the Black Eyes Peas head honcho on her previous record and was impressed with his musical IQ. “There’s not a song you can mention or an era you can mention in music that he doesn’t know about or understand what made it that,” she marveled. “I think it’s key in trying to do something fresh. It just felt comfortable and felt right, and I haven’t been a part of a group since my first, second record [with the Neptunes].” She is also looking forward to performing the track at the Winter Music Conference in Miami later this week. “It’s great, because I think ‘Acapella’ is a really great song to perform, and for some reason my first singles are always a nightmare to perform live,” she laughed. “And this is actually really fun.” Stick with MTV News for more coverage of the WMC 2010, which kicks off Tuesday in Miami. Jennifer Lopez Parts Ways With Sony Records

With the release of her new album up in the air, the singer/actress is set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ this weekend. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to be the host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, but unlike most host/guests, at the moment Jenny from the Block doesn’t seem to have much to promote during her appearance. That’s because, according to Entertainment Weekly , the singer has split with longtime record label Sony Music’s Epic Records, which was slated to release her delayed seventh album, Love? , in April. After taking time off to become a mother of twins with husband Marc Anthony, Lopez was working on her comeback album, releasing the shoe fetish song “Louboutins” last year. She famously wiped out while lip-synching that tune at November’s American Music Awards , but when the song fizzled on the charts, failing to crack the top 10 on the singles tally, the heat on the project apparently cooled off. “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together,” the singer’s manager, Benny Medina, said in a statement Monday. Her rep told EW that Lopez is already negotiating with another record label. A Sony spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time. The story broke on Monday on the Deadline Hollywood blog, where it was reported that Lopez’s contract had ended and that she’d fulfilled it with “Louboutins” and another recent single, “Fresh Out the Oven,” which leaked online in October. The report also stated that it’s unclear if Lopez was finished with the album, which reportedly features the Neptunes, Danja, Jim Jonsin and Rodney Jerkins. Unnamed Lopez “insiders” said the album was “by no means done” and that she had only finished a few songs for it. Lopez is slated to return to the big screen in late April in the romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan.” Related Artists Jennifer Lopez
