REVIEW: Good-Enough Shark Night 3D Delivers Dumb, Rowdy Summer Swan Song

To answer the question that occurred to many when the golden-hued trailer for Shark Night 3D was first unveiled — yes, the sun does eventually set on the film’s hapless group of Louisiana college students, leaving them to battle their way through a long, dark shark night of the soul. Everything else about stuntman-turned-director David R. Ellis’s latest effort is similarly as advertised — an ambitiously differentiated array of shark species show up to chomp on the tanned, low-BMI bodies of the cast and, every once in a while, on the camera, darting at the screen with toothy maws open as if to gulp the 3-D glasses off the faces of the audience.

Project Runway Castoff Peach Carr Talks to Movieline About the Contestant Who ‘Broke Her Spirit’

Peach Carr, the Project Runway contestant eliminated in last night’s episode, was the eldest and funniest member of the season eight cast, so it’s disheartening to hear that one of her fellow competitors said something disparaging about her personal life that “broke her spirit” before the bridesmaid challenge. Carr talked to us this morning about her fabric choices, her friendship with April, and the remark that left her brokenhearted.

Extra Seriously Injured During Stunt on Transformers 3 Set

During a surely ridiculous stunt on the set of Transformers 3 , 24-year-old extra Gabriella Cedillo was seriously injured when a metal cable cut through the windshield of her Toyota and “sliced through her skull.” The aspiring actress (and current bank teller) was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious head trauma. Deadline reports that Cedillo — who obviously has no training as a stunt performer — was paid $25 for the use of her car. [ Deadline , ABC Chicago ]

On DVD: How to Organize a Do-It Yourself Labor Day Film Festival

Sure, Christmas movies for Christmastime, ad infintum, but Labor Day movies? Why not? Most of us seem unaware of it, but Labor Day is in fact a day federally designated to celebrate the unions and a unionized working class. It was initiated in 1887 by President Grover Cleveland to appease the a discontented working class, and the possibility of labor groups using the anniversary of the Haymarket riots and hangings of 1886 to institute an annual protest parade against the ownership class. Today, it’s merely a salute to the very work everyone gets a day off from. But hey, a little labor history’s good for the colon — and these 13 films (or any selections thereof) aren’t the worst way to honor the holiday.
