Open Thread: Gang Members Hold Press Conference to Criticize Chicago Police

You read that right . Gang members in the most violent city in the nation criticized the police for being ineffective in combating…gang violence. At a news conference organized by self-identified gang members Thursday morning, several speakers complained that police and city officials do not respect them, and that the only way to curb violence is to provide jobs and improve their community. The men who spoke out Thursday morning blamed poverty, drugs and a lack of jobs for the problems in the streets. They also said that Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis’ meeting with so-called gang leaders was a waste of time. But when asked what could be done right now to stop the daily barrage of bullets on Chicago streets, they didn’t have an answer.  Could Chicago’s crime problem have anything to do with the fact that they consider taking policy advice from the same violent criminals responsible for that problem?

Miracle on West 57th: CBS Ties Lee to Gore and Quotes Assessment of Bush as ‘Intelligent’

Wednesday’s CBS Evening News, without Katie Couric, uniquely amongst the broadcast network evening newscasts tied Discovery Channel hostage-taker/bomber James Lee to Al Gore and, even more miraculously, highlighted how Tony Blair, in his new book, describes George W. Bush as “intelligent.” Reporter Wyatt Andrews relayed in his story on the incident in suburban DC: In an anti-corporate protest two years ago, Lee was arrested while throwing cash outside of Discovery’s offices. He said in court he had been moved to save the planet, partly by Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. Neither ABC nor NBC mentioned Gore’s inspiration. (ABC’s Pierre Thomas on World News: Lee “has protested at the Discovery Channel repeatedly, raising concerns about the environment and over-population.” NBC’s Tom Costello on Nightly News referred to Lee “handing out a rambling leaflet that called on Discovery to devote more programming to global warming and animal extinction.”) Later in the newscast, fill-in anchor Harry Smith squeezed in a short note about A Journey: My Political Life : “Tony Blair’s long-awaited memoir is out tonight and it includes the former British Prime Minister’s take on some of the famous and powerful. President Bush: ‘Intelligent,’ ‘knew exactly what he wanted’…” Washington, DC area viewers, however, didn’t learn who Gore inspired or Blair admired since WUSA-TV channel 9, CBS’s Gannett-owned DC affiliate, didn’t carry Wednesday’s CBS Evening News, electing to stay with local coverage of the Silver Spring, Maryland events.

Open Thread: Another GZ Mosque Supporter Refuses to Call Hamas a Terrorist Group

The State Department classifies it as such . Apparently Imam Dawoud Kringle is of a different mind. What do you think of Andy McCarthy’s explanation for this Imam’s non-response? Is the definition of terrorism the real issue here?

Forced Bonhomie Between Rachel Maddow and NBC Colleague Richard Engel Results in Cringe-Inducing TV

Alas, it wasn’t supposed to end this way, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow lamented to NBC foreign correspondent Richard Engel in Baghdad last week after the departure of the last American combat brigade from Iraq. Engel recounted his experiences covering the war, getting into Iraq on false pretenses just before the US-led invasion in 2003 and spending considerable time in the country thereafter (first part of embedded video) — MADDOW: So you were here throughout for the first five, six years of the war? ENGEL: Yes. I took little breaks but, straight, I was here 10, 11 months a year. MADDOW: So when you, thinking now in August 2010, this is ending. I mean, Operation Iraqi Freedom ends now and did you have any idea this is the way that it would end? ENGEL: It’s ending with a little bit of a whisper. MADDOW (plaintively): Yeah. … and not with that Saigon-style rout I so anticipated … ENGEL: I mean, if you remember back, the huge media coverage, there were cameras everywhere, there were hundreds of embeds. Well, look at the media circus now? (turns around, arms raised for emphasis) This is it. There’s nobody here. (turning to face Maddow directly) I mean, we’re on a big base. When the war began there were cameras and cameras (repeating himself) and embeds and hundreds of reporters (ditto) fighting with each other to be part of this. … unlike those who parachute in long after the dust has settled … MADDOW: Hmm hmm. ENGEL (apologetically, arms extended to Maddow, damage control instinct kicking in): I’m really glad that you came … … why would you think otherwise …? ENGEL: … and I’m glad we’re covering it, but there’s nobody here. MADDOW (wanly): Yeah. ENGEL: So it’s ending so quietly. So I didn’t expect that it would end like that. At the start of the next segment of her show on Aug. 19, Maddow lobbed a shot back across Engel’s bow (second part of clip) — MADDOW: We’re at the Palestine Hotel with (gesturing toward Engel) some jerk who we picked up on the street …  …. “nobody” here, huh …? The following night, on Aug. 20, Engel walked with Maddow through a Baghdad marketplace and stressed once more how he was really, really happy she was there (third part of clip) — MADDOW: Can we walk? ENGEL: Yeah, please do. … whatever … MADDOW: So when you, when you’re out in Baghdad, making this decision to take me here and do these things today … ENGEL (interrupting): I’m delighted that you are here … … again, why on earth would you think otherwise …? ENGEL: … I really am, we haven’t done this and we don’t do this enough … … Let’s mark our calendars and do it again, same time next decade …

Open Thread: Pelosi Wants to Investigate Mosque Opponents

That’s right, not the people building the Ground Zero Mosque, the people who are leading the grassroots campaign to prevent it from being built. She said the following to reporters (via  Kerry Picket ): There is no question that there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded . How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City. So Pelosi’s complaint is that voters care about this issue. And her response is to call for an investigation. What are your thoughts on her statement?

Open Thread: Steven Slater Is No Hero

At the Corner, Rich Lowry writes of the nation’s – and the media’s – strange fascination with a man who really has not done much to earn it, beyond throwing a temper tantrum. The opposite of Slater’s spectacular self-indulgence is Capt. Chesley Sullenberger’s unadorned professionalism. The air-travel hero of 2009, Sully landed his plane in the Hudson River while feeling, he said afterward, “calm on the outside, turmoil on the inside.” Which is the way it’s supposed to be. Sadly, Sully always felt like a throwback – steady, no-nonsense, thoroughly competent. This year’s air-travel hero managed, in contrast, to leverage a tantrum into an act of reckless endangerment, by risking dropping the legendary emergency chute on someone’s head. But, hey, he blew off steam. Back in 1982, a British Airways plane lost all four engines in flight. As the British newspaper the Daily Mail recounts, Capt. Eric Moody apprised the passengers of the dire situation, and added, “I trust you are not in too much distress.” The paper continues, “Incredibly, passengers and crew reacted to the captain’s cataclysmic announcement not with screams and hysteria, but with an extraordinary calm.” Miraculously, the engines were restored, and everyone lived to tell the tale. That’s heroism for this, or any, age. As for Slater, his slide was amusing, but not the least bit admirable. What does the mainstream media’s fascination with Slater tell us about how their worldview and opinion of the nation? Anything?
