Mika Brzezinski: Sorry for Calling Secretary of State a "Butt Boy!"

Mika Brzezinski is trying very hard to extricate her foot from her mouth right about now. But will it be enough to save her job? The Morning Joe co-host is in boiling hot water at the moment after she used a homophobic remark to describe Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on air. Brzezinski was talking about Pompeo's interview on cable news rival Fox & Friends, where the very high-level Cabinet member explained his view on the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Pompeo said that while the killing a “tragic incident” that the United States doesn't approve of, the Saudis are still “an important ally” of this country. Hence the lack of any action ordered against them by President Trump. “I understand that Donald Trump doesn't care … But why doesn't Mike Pompeo care right now?” Brzezinski asked during an interview with Sen. Dick Durbin. She then got in trouble by adding out loud: “Are the pathetic deflections that we just heard when he appeared on Fox & Friends, is that a patriot speaking, or a wannabe dictator's butt boy? “I'm dead serious. I'm asking, are these the words of a patriot?” That second line may be the best part: Brzezinski was dead serious in wondering: Is Secretary of State Pompeo a wannabe dictator's butt boy?!? As you might imagine, Brzezinski garnered a whole lot of backlash for the use of this term, prompting a response and an apology on Twitter: Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough were among the President's staunchest allies back in 2015 and 2016, around the time of the Republican primary. They often interviewed the then-candidate. But the hosts and the Commander-in-Chief have since had a major falling out, with Trump going off on Brzezinski last summer and sparking a bizarre social media feud . WaPo Highlights Dem Outrage at Fox Donations to GOP, Downplays Reality of 50-50 Contributions

The Washington Post hyped the news on the front of Wednesday’s Style section that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has donated $1 million to the Republican Governors Association , “triggering swift criticism from Democrats that a contribution of that magnitude casts a shadow on his media properties, particularly Fox News.” In paragraph 13, on page C-10, this apparent outrage of Republican favoritism gets ruined by reality: Until now, the News Corp./Fox political action committee had given 54 percent of its donations to Democrats and 46 percent to Republicans , according to the Center for Responsive Politics — including $8,000 to Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid’s campaign committee and $5,000 to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s organization. News Corp. also gave $45,000 each to GOP and Democratic campaign committees on Capitol Hill. So the real story here is that Democrats are having a fit over the RGA donation, even if the overall donation levels are about even. Reporter Howard Kurtz failed to inform readers that Murdoch held a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in 2006 (and the New York Post endorsed her Senate re-election bid). Kurtz only mentioned he’d “sought accomodations” with her: An outspoken conservative, the Australian-born Murdoch has nonetheless sought accommodations over the years with political rivals, including Tony Blair when he was British prime minister and Hillary Rodham Clinton when she was a senator from New York. Kurtz suggested the RGA donation spurred a new anti-Fox News political campaign by the Democratic Party:   The White House refused for months to make top officials available for interviews and assailed Fox as an arm of the Republican Party — an attack that was revived Tuesday. “Any pretense that may have existed about the ties between Fox News and the Republican Party has been ripped violently away,” said Hari Sevugan, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee. “Any Republican that appears on Fox should now have a disclaimer that they are financially supported by the network and any coverage of the elections this fall on Fox should be reported with disclaimer for what it is — partisan propaganda.” But if “disclaimers” were being handed out, wouldn’t every report on Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have to note they were funded by the parent company of Fox News? And wouldn’t that tend to ruin the DNC spin? If Sevugan thinks the on-air FNC product is ridiculously unfair and imbalanced, if anything, the roughly 50-50 donations levels must be more balanced than the TV coverage.  It’s quite clear that the Democrats are used to a media environment where every network, every newspaper, and every “news” magazine caters to Barack Obama and find it scandalous and outrageous that anyone wouldn’t march to their drumbeat. Being a “real” news network and not a “partisan propaganda” outlet by their definition actually requires being a partisan propaganda outlet for Obama.

Halperin Not Digging Dippy Deutsch?

Was Mark Halperin just mugging, or was he really turned off by Donny Deutsch’s antics on the set of Morning Joe today? Check the video and be the judge. Here’s the background: on the show’s August 6th edition [a clip of which was played today and is seen in the video here], Deutsch turned up in a tight black T-shirt and proceeded to spend much of his appearance flexing for the cameras.  He ended his self-promoting performance by doing a set of push-ups as the closing comments rolled. Deutsch, apparently doing sartorial penance, appeared in a three-piece suit this morning.  But when Mika Brzezinski chided him for his macho act, going so far as to facetiously accuse him of “sexting” on the set, Deutsch couldn’t resist recreating his previous performance, doing a set of dips on the desk. Keep an eye on Mark Halperin, who reacts with a series of head shakes, eye rolls, nose pinches and snippy sidewise glances.  Mark might have just been mugging, but was there also been an element of sincere disapproval of Deutsch’s egotistical display?  I’m saying ‘si’.

MSNBC’s Brzezinski Swoons Over Wacky Flight Attendant: ‘I Think I Love Him,’ ‘Dreams’ of Imitating Him

Was MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski just joking or was she channeling some actual frustrations with her employers at MSNBC? As Brzezinski sat in as a guest co-host of Saturday’s Today show on NBC, she repeatedly joked about admiring Steven Slater, the flight attendant who quit his job at JetBlue by erratically bailing out of his plane down the emergency chute holding two beers. While co-host Amy Robach admitted that she was “getting sick of this story,” Brzezinski had only just heard the story because she had been vacationing the past week. Reveling in her fascination with Slater, she made such declarations as, “I feel his pain,” “I think I love him,” and, “I have dreams about doing that actually.” Although at one point she referred to sometimes being annoyed at unruly airline passengers as a reason for sympathizing with him, she also twice joked about jumping out of the window of the NBC studio at 30 Rock. At the top of the show, she jokingly predicted, “I might jump out the window with a beer. You never know.” During a plug later, she mused: “Two beers, I love him. It’s my dream just to, like, right outside the window of 30 Rock. What do you think? On an escape hatch.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Saturday, August 14, Today show on NBC: AMY ROBACH: And then we’re going to show you the exclusive first video of Steven Slater- MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I love this. ROBACH: -as the JetBlue flight attendant- BRZEZINSKI: I feel his pain. ROBACH: -fed up with his job, abandoned his plane, slid down the emergency chute this week at New York’s Kennedy Airport. I have to say, as we were talking about this, I said, “I’m kind of getting sick of this story.” And you said, “What? I just heard about it.” BRZEZINSKI: No, no. ROBACH: Do you have television in Maine? BRZEZINSKI: I have dreams of doing that, actually. (LAUGHS) So no, we didn’t really watch. I did just hear about it yesterday, but I love it. ROBACH: It’s all new to Mika, but that’s good. BRZEZINSKI: I love it. ROBACH: Then you can do the story because you’re excited about it. BRZEZINSKI: I’ll do the story. ROBACH: All right. BRZEZINSKI: I might jump out the window with a beer. You never know. ROBACH: Oh, all right. … ROBACH: Back inside Studio 1A, I’m Amy Robach along with Mika Brzezinski. Lester is enjoying the weekend off. Coming up on Today, this is Mika’s favorite story. BRZEZINSKI: Yes. ROBACH: She’s new to it. (BRZEZINSKI LAUGHS) More bumpy skies for the JetBlue flight attendant. BRZEZINSKI: I think I love him. ROBACH: Yes. BRZEZINSKI: Steven Slater was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and trespassing. Now new video has been released of the escape hatch being deployed from that plane. I believe he went down that thing with a beer in his hand. We’ll see. ROBACH: I think it’s two beers. BRZEZINSKI: Two beers, I love him. It’s my dream just to, like, right outside the window of 30 Rock. What do you think? On an escape hatch. ROBACH: Might be a little dangerous. Might be a little dangerous. BRZEZINSKI: All right, maybe not. … JEFF ROSSEN: Slater hasn’t been fired just yet. He’s just suspended. He says he still wants to be a flight attendant for JetBlue. That is unlikely now, to say the very least. Airline executives, Mika, say that there’s no excuse for what he did, regardless of what the reason was. BRZEZINSKI: Mmmm. I wouldn’t mind him on my flight. I have seen- ROSSEN: You love this guy. BRZEZINSKI: -over the past couple of days, I’ve been on some nightmare flights- ROSSEN: Yeah. BRZEZINSKI: -and there have been some nightmare passengers. So do I feel bad? Should I feel bad for kind of feeling his pain? ROSSEN: Nightmare passengers. BRZEZINSKI, LAUGHING: I’m the perfect passenger. ROSSEN: No, you, no, you shouldn’t feel bad about it because I think it’s resonated with a lot of people. He’s got over 200,000 people on his Facebook fan page- BRZEZINSKI: That’s amazing. ROSSEN: -who say, “I want to do the same thing at my job.” But the prosecutors, as you heard, say this is serious. BRZEZINSKI: Yeah, he broke the law. I guess that’s the bottom line. ROSSEN: They say it doesn’t matter what happened on the plane. He broke the law. BRZEZINSKI: Jeff Rossen, thank you very much.

Brzezinski: Invite Iran To Conference On Afghanistan’s Future

Great idea.  While we’re at it, let’s invite al Qaeda to a conference on Israel’s future . . . On Morning Joe today, Zbigniew Brzezinski recommended that the US organize an “international conference” on Afghanistan’s future—and invite Iran to participate. The former Carter National Security Advisor didn’t say what positive contribution he might expect from a country working in defiance of international sanctions to develop nuclear weapons and that has stated its desire to wipe Israel off the map.  ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI:  I think we have to have some sort of an international conference drawing in the neighbors of Afghanistan into the process regarding the future of Afghanistan.  That means, among others, the Iranians. So, there are a number of things we need to do, difficult as they are, to achieve the objectives the president has set for himself. Zbig’s daughter Mika could be heard uttering a [quizzical?] “hmm” in response.  Will any of the MSM pick up on Brzezinski’s suggestion?  Might Pres. Obama take a cue from Carter’s man?

Column: ‘Why Trig Palin has divided America’

Gary Bauer and Daniel Allott write in Politico.com that Trig Palin has become a lightning rod for criticism against his mother, Sarah Palin.Bauer (no relation) and Allott say the “hateful response” that greeted Palin on the campaign trail last year carried “eugenic overtones” and reflected a “broader societal bias against disability.” Trig Palin has Down syndrome. An excerpt:Palin is controversial, in part, because America is divided over disability. We’ve established laws and institutions that

Pat Buchanan “Jokes” That Todd Palin Should Drown Levi Johnston For Criticizing Sarah Palin

What, precisely, is the matter with Pat Buchanan?  He recently wrote a column comparing an accused Nazi war criminal to Jesus Christ .  On today’s Morning Joe, as twolf1 observed , Buchanan opined that “First Dude” Todd Palin ought to take Levi Johnston (the father of Sarah and Todd’s grandchild) down to the creek and “hold him under the water until he stops thrashing.” (this charming suggestion followed discussion of Levi Johnston’s recent claim that Sarah Palin resigned as governor in order to cash in).  Buchanan was uttering his trademark maniacal chuckle as he said this, and other Morning Joe-sters were chuckling as well. A few minutes later, Mika Brzezinski issued a disclaimer that neither Buchanan nor anyone else was advocating violence (Buchanan laughed again as Brzezinski said this), and then described Buchanan’s comment as “priceless”.
