WaPo Thumps 2012 Hopeful Rick Santorum as ‘Notorious for His Moral Pronouncements’

Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty explored the dark-horse presidential explorations of former Sen. Rick Santorum on the front page of Friday's paper. It was a fairly respectful story until it came time to discuss the former senator's “notorious” moral statements, and how he still “breathes fire” on occasion: Santorum was notorious for his moral pronouncements . He contended, for instance, that Boston's liberal culture was partly to blame for the sex-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church there, and suggested that lifting antiquated state sodomy laws would sanction bestiality — or as he put it, “man on dog.” Santorum still breathes fire . In his evolving stump speech, he frames the prospect of Obama's reelection in near-apocalyptic terms: “Democracy and freedom will disappear.” His agenda consists of stopping pretty much everything that has been set in motion in the past two years, starting with the overhaul of the nation's health-care system. read more

Just before the first season of The Real Housewives of Washington D.C. premiered, Movieline caught up with Michaele and Tareq Salahi, the alleged White House gate crashers who endured a world of criticism (literally) when the dubious timeline of events leading up to their attendance at a state dinner was revealed. Hear the First Single From Conan O’Brien’s Spoken Word Album

If the prospect of Conan O’B rien’s spoken word album , And They Call Me Mad? , has you so excited that you can’t even wait until it gets released tomorrow, here’s some good news: the first “single” has appeared online. It’s appropriately bizarre, alternative, and totally committed to a bit that doesn’t necessarily work all the time: namely, Conan O’B rien as a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein who loves scheming and lattes.

Training to Swim the English Channel: The Final Countdown

Photo via EarthWatch Guest blogger Caroline Chisholm, head of marketing and communications globally for Earthwatch Institute , a non-profit organization dedicated to a sustainable environment, is swimming the English Channel in August to raise funds for Earthwatch initiatives. There is nothing like a deadline to galvanize the mind. The final hurdle before attempting my English Channel crossing was the prospect of a marathon six hour qualifying swim. 27,000 Abandoned Gulf Oil Wells May Be Leaking

(AP) More than 27,000 abandoned oil and gas wells lurk in the hard rock beneath the Gulf of Mexico, an environmental minefield that has been ignored for decades. No one – not industry, not government – is checking to see if they are leaking, an Associated Press investigation shows. The oldest of these wells were abandoned in the late 1940s, raising the prospect that many deteriorating sealing jobs are already failing. The AP investigation uncovered particular concern with 3,500 of the neglected wells – those characterized in federal government records as “temporarily abandoned.” Regulations for temporarily abandoned wells require oil companies to present plans to reuse or permanently plug such wells within a year, but the AP found that the rule is routinely circumvented, and that more than 1,000 wells have lingered in that unfinished condition for more than a decade. About three-quarters of temporarily abandoned wells have been left in that status for more than a year, and many since the 1950s and 1960s – even though sealing procedures for temporary abandonment are not as stringent as those for permanent closures. As a forceful reminder of the potential harm, the well beneath BP's Deepwater Horizon rig was being sealed with cement for temporary abandonment when it blew April 20, leading to one of the worst environmental disasters in the nation's history. BP alone has abandoned about 600 wells in the Gulf, according to government data. added by: TimALoftis
