Padma Lakshmi and Richard Gere: Dating?

Esteemed actor Richard Gere and Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi are dating in secret says a source who clearly doesn’t care that the couple is trying to keep it on the down-low. “They have been quietly spending time together,” says the insider. “It is all very new and recent, and happened while he has been filming in New York.” At 64, Gere still has a reputation as something of a ladies man. The Pretty Woma n star was married to Cindy Crawford for four years before Gere’s alleged infidelity led to their divorce. Gere and Carey Lowell separated in 2013 and are still working on finalizing their divorce. Former model Lakshmi married Salman Rushdie in 2004, but the couple went their separate ways just three years later. So hopefully these two will have better luck this time around. There’s no doubting that Gere’s a lucky man – not only has he landed himself an expert chef, Lakshmi is also a former Playboy model , having posed for the famous men’s magazine in 2012. So, best of luck to Richard and Padma. But especially to Richard – come on dude, you already dropped the ball with Cindy freakin’ Crawford, don’t mess this one up too.

Hugh Jackman Went A Little Wolverine On Tom Hooper To Land ‘Les Miserables’ Role

Hugh Jackman is known for his love of a good musical as much as he’s known for his portrayal of the adamantium-reinforced wise-ass Wolverine . So, it’s no surprise that he used a bit of the latter character’s blunt persuasiveness to land the part of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables . At a press conference for  the hotly anticipated musical at Claridge’s on Wednesday, Jackman recalled that upon hearing from his agent that a film adaptation of the vaunted musical was in the works, he began to lobby for the part. Director Tom Hooper had barely had the chance to unpack his best director Oscar from The King’s Speech , let alone formally announce his next project, when Jackman called to arrange a meeting. Upon meeting Hooper, Jackman didn’t mince words. The straight-talking Aussie told the British filmmaker: “Mate, I’m going to audition for you,” and persisted with both Hooper and Les Misérables ’ legendary theater producer, Sir Cameron MacKintosh until the deal was sealed. “I’ve dreamt of being in a movie musical for a long time. For some reason I never even thought Les Mis would be possible,” Jackman said. “It was so iconic, the role wasn’t even on my radar.” Once cast, Jackman said that Hooper issued a clear directive to him about his coming portrayal of Valjean: “I want you unrecognizable. If you’re recognizable, I want your friends to think you’re sick,” the director told him. Upon which Jackman lost around 15 kilos (33lb) — more weight than Anne Hathaway  shed for her role of Fantine, as the actress pointed out following a New York screening in November — to shoot the movie’s opening scenes as an emaciated prisoner. Jackman later gorged to regain the weight for following scenes, gleefully stating, “That bit was fun by the way!” Jackman insisted that Les Misérables  has been the most physically demanding role he has ever tackled. It seems giving Eddie Redmayne a fireman’s lift while wading through the movie equivalent of chin-high sewage (in reality, watery peat), remains a prominent struggle in the then rehabilitated-man-mountain’s mind, “It was very, very cold, and Eddie, a very trim guy, is not a light as he looks, let me tell you! I constantly wanted to call for a double.” Alas, Jackman said, Hooper wasn’t up for that. As a regular performer on the musical scene, the physical requirements of the role were no surprise to Jackman, “It’s weird coming from me, who’s played Wolverine, or has been in other action movies, you’d probably think, ‘at least a musical is going to be easy.’ But anyone who’s done a musical knows; whether you’re dancing or not, physically it’s the most difficult thing you can do. “Singing is incredibly physical. All of those things combined, as well as emotionally and vocally, it’s the most challenging thing, and usually all at once. It’s the kind of thing you want as an actor. You want to feel challenged. It’s good to feel uncomfortable. “I’m really grateful, that’s the overwhelming feeling.” A head-strong actor with a passion for both musical and action genres — does anyone see a hybrid movie on the horizon, The Sound of Mutants perhaps? Les Misérables  opens in U.S. theaters on December 25. WATCH: Edward Burns Unwraps ‘The Fitzgerald Family Christmas’ And Gives Thanks For VOD

It’s no secret that indie filmmakers can often feel like Bob Cratchit, begging for just a little bit of coal from Scroogy Hollywood so they can keep their creative fire burning. But the multi-platform release, initially frowned upon, has become a boon for indie filmmakers.  We’ve already seen Arbitrage with Richard Gere and Lay the Favorite with Bruce Willis hit VOD services at the same time they hit movie theaters, and now Edward Burns’ The Fitzgerald Family Christmas is doing the same. And because of that, Burns tells me his films are turning a profit for the first time since She’s The One . Check out my full interview with actor and filmmaker below, as well as the film’s website to find out if it’s playing at a theater near you when it goes into limited release this Friday, Dec. 7.  If not, you can catch it on iTunes, Amazon, or VOD. Chit Chatter: Denzel Washington Tells His Daughter – “Be Like Viola Davis–Forget About Them Lil Pretty Girls” To Make It As A Dark-Skinned Actress In Hollyweird

Denzel Washington Gives His Daughter Acting Advice – “Be Like Viola Davis” Legendary Hollyweird icon Denzel Washington is keeping it all the way real with his young daughter who is an aspiring actress herself. The Oscar Award winning actor recently sat down at a roundtable with several other Hollyweird heavyweights and gave his two cents on what young black women looking to make it in the city of lights need to strive towards. via The Grio Washington was featured on the Hollywood Reporter’s annual actor’s roundtable along with fellow actors Jamie Foxx, Matt Damon, Richard Gere, Alan Arkin and John Hawkes. In the wide-ranging interview, Washington discusses advice he gave his daughter Olivia: “I tell my daughter — she’s at NYU — I say: ’You’re black, you’re a woman, and you’re dark-skinned at that. So you have to be a triple/quadruple threat.’ I said: ‘You gotta learn how to act. You gotta learn how to dance, sing, move onstage.’ That’s the only place, in my humble opinion, you really learn how to act. I said: ‘Look at Viola Davis.’ I said That’s who you want to be. Forget about them little pretty girls ‘” Sounds like some sound father-daughter advice that she probably won’t get anywhere else. Do you agree with Denzel’s theory?

REVIEW: Money, And Richard Gere, Fuel Fatalistic Financial Thriller Arbitrage

Billionaire Robert Miller ( Richard Gere ) is a cheat. He cheats on his wife ( Susan Sarandon ) with his mistress, and on his mistress (Laetitia Casta) with his job. And for his job as CEO of one of those mysteriously mighty hedge funds that control the world in Arbitrage , he’ll cheat everybody : the IRS, his daughter and business partner ( Brit Marling ), the buddy who loaned him $412 million, and the fellow mogul Miller wants to acquire his company so he can, of course, spend time with his family, even though the idea confuses them. “I’m just trying to imagine what we would do?” laughs Marling. Clearly, Robert Miller swims with those economic sharks who nearly ruined the world in 2008, and writer/director Nicholas Jarecki (brother of Andrew and Eugene) is going to make him pay. But not for his actual crimes — no one’s going to jail for those — which means Jarecki has to invent a new sin. And so, late one night when the roads are empty, Miller whisks his mistress toward his lake house. He falls asleep at the wheel, skids into the divider, and comes-to next to her fresh corpse — a bloody metaphor for the lives he’s impersonally ruined, and a vicious end for Casta, a Normandy-born beauty so physically perfect there’s literally a bust of her in every French town hall. The quiet of the crash’s aftermath is chilling; the only sound is Miller screaming. But then he thinks of the millions he could lose if the cops, investors, and his wife look harder at his life and makes the cold decision to abandon her body and rescue his reputation. Hey, what’s a little furtive involuntary manslaughter to the baron of Manhattan? With the overconfidence of someone who’s Tivo-ed every episode of CSI , Miller calmly calls collect to Harlem and asks his ex-chauffeur’s son, a young ex-con named Jimmy (Nate Parker), to meet him at a gas station and shuttle him back to the city, no questions asked. Meanwhile, Detective Bryer (Tim Roth) arrives at the flaming wreck and resolves to find out who was really behind the wheel. This sounds like the set-up of a cat-and-mouse thriller. But Jarecki quickly establishes that Miller is screwed — the detective has him fingered by breakfast, and by lunch he’s got Jimmy in custody and threatened with a 10-year sentence for obstruction of justice if he won’t give testimony proving Miller’s guilt. As Miller’s lawyer warns, “The real world is different than television.” So, too, is this movie. Compared to an episode of your average television procedural, Arbitrage has double the runtime and half the suspense because Jarecki could care less about tension and theatrics. He doesn’t even care about Casta’s death — she doesn’t merit a single emo flashback. Jarecki is only interested in one deeply cynical question: What justice is fair to a billionaire? Money — not sex or death — is what fuels Arbitrage . It’s Miller’s excuse for refusing to confess (what’s 10 years to one innocent man if it protects thousands of employees?), and it’s what Miller offers Jimmy for his silence. Apparently, the going rate for a decade of jail time is $2 million, an insulting number considering it’s also what Miller drops to squire Sarandon’s status-conscious wife to a single Friday night benefit gala. And the detective’s resentment for Miller’s practically meaningless money is why the pinched and bitter Roth is so dogged about putting him in prison, vowing, “He doesn’t get to walk just because he’s on CNBC .” The performances are golden with Marling, Roth and Sarandon adding heft to their slender characters. It’s smart casting to have Vanity Fair impresario Graydon Carter pop up as the tycoon Miller so desperately needs to impress. And as the under-attack Jimmy, Parker works hard to make audiences want to remember his name. But this is a showcase for Gere, who has spent his career playing men who can afford a good scotch. (With that head of expensive silver hair, he could never play a fry cook.) At 63, his features have turned to steel: his eyes are small and watchful, and with his good looks he seems aggressively aware that he only has a few more years to grope Laetitia Casta before he has to holster his penis like Harrison Ford. Here, he’s at once charismatic and clueless, even getting a laugh when he asks Jimmy, “What’s an Applebee’s?” Gere does his best to give Arbitrage an agitated energy, but Jarecki’s fatalism works against the film. We can’t root for Miller; instead, we watch with dispassionate interest how the fallout of his misdeeds affects his friends, business partners and family. The smart surprise is that frankly, some of them don’t give a damn. Miller’s millions haven’t just corrupted him — they’ve corrupted everyone who wants a piece of him. And when Jimmy, the poorest and the purest in this ice cold drama, growls, “You think money’s going to fix this?” we’re forced to agree with Miller’s genuinely confused response: “What else is there?” Amy Nicholson is a critic, playwright and editor.
