This weekend, aliens attempted to storm your local cineplex and America decided it likes its space invaders to shoot lasers at LA rather than just nab some moms. Battle: Los Angeles took the box office crown this weekend, while the Robert Zemeckis-produced Mars Needs Moms crash-landed at number five. And occupying that squishy middle ground was Red Riding Hood , which had a so-so debut at so-so number three. Your weekend receipts are here.
Alien invasion flick bests ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Rango’ to claim top spot, while animated ‘Mars Needs Moms’ tanks. By Shawn Adler Michelle Rodriguez in “Battle: Los Angeles” Photo: Sony Pictures It showcases an epic battle between aliens and humans, but it turns out that the biggest winner of the weekend isn’t going to be Aaron Eckhart or the extra-terrestrials he faces in “Battle: Los Angeles,” but an entirely different, third combatant: the film itself. Led by an all-star cast headlined by the “Thank You For Smoking” star, “Battle: Los Angeles” topped all comers at the Friday night box office with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,417 theaters. The story of a surprise war waged by aliens for control of Earth, the flick should eek out approximately $40 for the weekend and another number one opening for the star of “The Dark Knight” in his first return to big budget action. The secret to the film’s success? Not treating an alien invasion movie like an alien invasion movie, director Jonathan Liebesman told MTV News . “This is a more down and dirty alien movie,” Liebesman said. “This is like if [‘Bourne Supremacy’ director] Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens, and shot it from the point of view of a platoon. It’s literally like ‘Black Hawk Down,’ if there were aliens in there. Like Iraqi war footage, but with aliens running around.” You’d be forgiven, meanwhile, for saying of the second place film, “My, what a big gross you have,” as the Brothers Grimm by way of Stephanie Meyer revisionist fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” scared up $5.7 million to claw its way near the top. The Catherine Hardwick directed and Amanda Seyfried starring film may seem to be similar to that little Kristen Stewart movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s just “Twilight” with a cape, Seyfried told MTV. “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried told us . “I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies. The truth is, it’s an entirely different story.” In third place, last weekend’s winner “Rango” managed a very healthy $5.5 million. The Johnny Depp starring flick about a chameleon who finds himself leading a small desert town as sheriff should bring its total to approximately $70 million by weekend’s close. In fourth place, “The Adjustment Bureau” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt managed a $3.4 million Friday. The biggest disappointment of the week was “Mars Needs Moms,” the newest animated film from Disney. Using motion capture technology and based on a story from Pulitzer Prize winner Berkeley Breathed, the reportedly expensive film managed just $1.8 million Friday and a fifth place finish. Among other films, “Beastly” scored $1.6 million for a sixth place finish, while “Just Go With It” managed an eighth place finish and $1.2 million. The Adam Sandler led comedy should pass $100 million sometime early next week. Rounding out the rest of the top ten, “Hall Pass” earned $1.5 million to come in seventh, “The King’s Speech” grabbed $1 million to finish ninth, and “Unknown” ran away with $975,000 to land in tenth.
How bad are the reviews for Red Riding Hood ? Well, Beastly — which was so unanimously reviled it even got lampooned on Saturday Night Live last week — scored a fresh rating three times higher than what Catherine Hardwicke’s fairytale is currently rocking on Rotten Tomatoes. Yikes. Ahead, nine of the sharpest barbs against Red Riding Hood .
Not going to SXSW ? No worries! Not only does Movieline have you covered in Austin , there’s also this fine recommendation for the more DIY Newman’s Ownly Experience. All you need is Netflix Instant, Newman’s Own Butter Boom Popcorn, and, apparently, the troubling “half-breed Apache” flick Hombre : “In truth, not only is the blackface approach racist and absurd, it’s also executed so poorly I spent most of the movie thinking Paul Newman was placed in some sort of ramshackle 1860s witness protection program where they just throw a wig at you and make you really, really dusty. I can still see you under there, Paul Newman!” It’s either this or Red Riding Hood , which is no choice at all, right? [ The Hairpin ]
We’ve been following the fairytale reinvention since Catherine Hardwicke chose it as her first post-‘Twilight’ project. By MTV News staff Amanda Seyfried in “Red Riding Hood” Photo: Warner Bros. While Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart continued on with the franchise Catherine Hardwicke launched on the big screen, the director left the “Twilight” series behind in 2008, bouncing from one project to another until finally committing to one: the “Twilight”-esque “Red Riding Hood.” For a while, she’d been attached to Summit Entertainment’s “If I Stay” and had been eyeing both an adaptation of “Hamlet” and a teen-focused fantasy pic called “Maximum Ride.” But in the end, Hardwicke settled on “Red Riding Hood,” with Amanda Seyfried in the title role, as her first post-“Twilight” project. Now, more than two years after the debut of the film that made stars out of Pattinson, Stewart and — yes, god bless those ever-faithful Twi-fans — Hardwicke herself, “Red Riding Hood” is finally here. So let’s flash back and bring you up to speed with an MTV News cheat sheet: everything you need to know about the new movie. Leaving Forks, Finding Medieval Times Hardwicke left “Twilight” in December of ’08 and was promptly replaced by Chris Weitz for “New Moon.” She held out hope of convincing RPattz or KStew to star in “If I Stay” or “Maximum Ride” but ultimately signed on to what was then called “The Girl With the Red Riding Hood,” a project Leonardo DiCaprio was producing as a gothic reimagining of the familiar fairy tale. Seyfried entered talks for the film in early 2010. Julie Christie, Gary Oldman and Shiloh Fernandez, as Seyfried’s love interest, eventually came aboard as well. “I’m always kind of careful about what I choose,” Seyfried explained to MTV News . “I had known [Hardwicke] kind of a little bit before, when I was dating Emile Hirsch, and I had been to her house before. That was years ago. And when I had met with her again, she talked about this movie. I completely fell in love with her idea and trusted her from that moment on, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m down.’ ” A Fairy Tale for the “Twilight” Set? The “Red Riding Hood” trailer arrived last fall, and after checking it out, we had only one question: Was the movie just “Twilight” with a cape ? There certainly seemed to be a lot of similarities, from the werewolf to the overall gothic vibe. But in a recent interview, Seyfried rejected the comparison. “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried told us . “I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies. The truth is, it’s an entirely different story.” Yet even Hardwicke, it seemed, found herself mixed up a bit. “We’d make jokes about her calling us Kristen and Rob and Taylor [Lautner],” Seyfried laughed. Regardless of any confusion, though, Seyfried maintained that “Red Riding Hood” is an utterly original creation, neither a “Twilight” remake nor a strict retelling of the original fairy tale. As she put it in a separate interview, “Catherine Hardwicke has just completely turned this story into something edgy and gothic and dark, and she’s clearly somebody that’s very capable of turning something, everything into an extraordinary world, as we’ve seen before.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Red Riding Hood.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . While filming Breaking Dawn in Vancouver, Billy Burke recently spoke to Reel Movie News about the end of Twilight and his other upcoming film, Red Riding Hood . The actor who plays the father of Kristen Stewart’s Bella discussed the two films’ parallels, working with his young, famous co-stars and more. Here are some excerpts from Burke’s chat with RMN: On his Red Riding Hood role: It’s slightly, pardon the metaphor, off the path of the fairytale. I play Red Riding Hood ‘s drunken, misguided father. It was one of the most beautiful sets I’ve ever been on. I kind of look like the drunken jolly green giant. On working with Catherine Hardwicke on both films: When she called me and pitched me the idea, I was all in. She created the Twilight world and she did an amazing job with that. I figured if anyone could make a picture like this, it would be her. On comparisons to Twilight: There is a love triangle. There’s a young girl and two gentlemen vying for her attention. That’s probably the biggest comparison. On Charlie and Bella’s post-wedding scene: I do have a scene with Kristen Stewart directly after the wedding, before they take off for the honeymoon. ‘The truth is, it’s an entirely different story,’ actress says. By Aly Semigran Amanda Seyfried in “Red Riding Hood” Photo: Warner Bros. Mythical folklore. Catherine Hardwicke. A steamy, young love triangle involving a pretty girl and two cute guys, one of which may be a wolf. There was no doubt that when the formula used to create the revamped fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” was revealed, “Twilight” comparisons were bound to be made. It’s a roadblock that its star Amanda Seyfried, who plays the film’s scarlet-caped protagonist, is entirely aware of. MTV News caught up with Seyfried to discuss the film, which opens in theaters this Friday, and why moviegoers shouldn’t go in expecting another “Twilight.” “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried said of the inevitable “Twilight” association. The 25-year-old actress, who admitted she doesn’t like when “an audience has [certain] expectations,” recognized that a lot of it certainly has to do with “Red Riding Hood” director Catherine Hardwicke, who was at the helm of the first “Twilight Saga” movie. “That’s her movie,” Seyfried acknowledged. Adding even more fuel to the “Twilight” fire is Seyfried’s “Red Riding Hood” co-star Billy Burke, who plays her father in the film and who is known to Twi-hards as Bella Swan’s dad. “Can’t forget about that,” she said with a smile, regarding Burke’s involvement with both projects. Still, she and her castmates, including her onscreen love interests Max Irons and Shiloh Fernandez, couldn’t help but poke fun of the situation on set. “We’d make jokes about [Hardwicke] calling us Kristen [Stewart] and Rob [Pattinson] and Taylor [Lautner],” Seyfried told MTV. Interestingly enough, Fernandez was one of the actors originally considered for the role of brooding vampire Edward Cullen in “Twilight.” But Seyfried remains adamant about audiences being able to distinguish the difference between this film and the “Twilight Saga.” “Red Riding Hood” is a new take on the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” that follows a young woman named Valerie, who is torn between choosing from two men, all while her small village is terrorized by a mysterious wolf. “Yeah, I mean it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies,” Seyfried said. “The truth is, it’s an entirely different story. “I think audiences are going to be really surprised when they end up seeing this movie because … there’s so many elements and there’s so much going on,” she assured, giving her own synopsis of the PG-13 chiller, “It’s a murder mystery as well as a coming-of-age movie, and there’s a lot of tension and it’s scary. All those elements combine to be thrilling, I think.” Do you think “Red Riding Hood” will be able to set itself apart from “Twilight”? Tell us in the comments. A while ago, I remember reaching out to Lohan to hear her take on Seyfried being the new Lohan, this was back when she would answer me, before Samantha Ronson cockblocked to protect her from the truth that Samantha Ronson is a fucking useless, unattractive, manipulative dyke with no talent and offers nothing to the fucking world but wasting space and air with her confusing gender issues, all thanks to being the second twin, always in an identity crisis…I don’t remember what she said, but I’m pretty sure it she wasn’t a fan… Clearly, Lohan’s not a real lesbian, cuz anyone who saw Stripping Chloe knows, this is one spectacular pussy ready to be ravaged, even if it’s been ravaged so many times before, cuz being the new Lohan comes with great responsibility….. Here she is at the premiere of Red Riding Hood, something I will see cuz it is the closest I will get to riding her red clit hood during her period with my face cuz she’s that fucking good…so good that even when she’s dull, boring, bad, unshowered, she’s still fucking good…. Rebecca De Mornay was there, trying to steal Seyfried glory, in what I thought was a see through shirt, but wasnt. She failed…and even if it was see through, Seyfried is unstoppable…and cuz Rebecca De Mornay’s fucking old…it’s not the 80s anymore motherfuckers…It’s the Amanda Seyfrieds..cuz she’s all that matters.
