Random Ridiculousness: Woman Arrested In Front Of Her Kids For Failing To Return Twilight Book And DVD Borrowed From The Library Two Years Ago

They out here arresting folks over Twilight DVD’s now? A mother was arrested in front of her young children and spent the night in jail – all for not returning a Twilight book and DVD. Lori Teel was arrested and handcuffed at her Portales, New Mexico home in front of her five small children on June 12. She had borrowed $36 worth of library materials not returned since 2010. Police had arrived at Mrs Teel’s home after receiving a call that her husband, Jimmy Teel, had assaulted someone, according to the Albuquerque Journal. It was while they were at the couple’s house that Portales police realized there was a warrant out for Mrs Teel’s arrest for the missing young adult fiction and movie. Her attorney, Eric Dixon, says arrest warrants were mailed last year to an address at which Mrs Teel hadn’t lived since childhood. However, the mother of five was arrested all the same in front of her children, aged one through ten, and spent the night in the Roosevelt County Detention Centre. She said: ‘My kids are still very emotional. They had to stay with a complete stranger.’ She was released the next day on a $610 bond. The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD and Stephanie Meyer’s novel Twilight both had a due date of October 5, 2010, but Mrs Teel said she couldn’t remember checking them out. However, library records show that both items were checked out in her name. A judge had placed a warrant for her arrest after she failed to show up in court, but records show that the court summons were sent to her childhood address. Now the mother is suing the city, according to UPI. Mr Dixon wrote in the tort claim: ‘Ms Teel and her small children have been traumatized, humiliated, embarrassed, subject to ridicule, and otherwise suffered pain and suffering and other damages as a result of this wrongful arrest.’ The Albuquerque Journal reported that charges against Mrs Teel were dropped earlier this week. We’re glad the charges were dropped because that’s utter ridiculousness, but it’s still horrible she had to spend a night in jail AND spend $610 in bail for some items that weren’t even worth $40!!! Taylor Lautner Fights For His Right To ‘Twilight’ In His #1 MTV Moment

Lautner will debut the ‘Abduction’ trailer and chat with MTV News tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET! By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News After finding phenomenal success as Jacob Black in the first “Twilight” movie, Taylor Lautner’s role as the lovable werewolf was in jeopardy by the time talk of “New Moon” began to ramp up in December 2008. There seemed to be a chance that the then-scrawny Lautner might not return to the flick. Before tonight’s “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” debut at 7:56 p.m. ET on air and online, we’ve been counting down Lautner’s finest MTV moments — and at #1, we see him fighting to keep his role as Jacob Black. “I have been working out. I’ve been working out since the day we finished filming ‘Twilight.’ I just weighed myself today; I’ve put on 19 pounds,” he told MTV News of how he was working to ensure he’d be Jacob from movie one right through the very last flick. The actor admitted that he was working hard and fast to make sure he could be the Jacob that author Stephanie Meyer had always envisioned. “I’m guaranteeing [director Chris] Weitz 10 more [pounds] by filming. I get to meet Chris on Friday, in two days, so I’m excited,” he said. “I’m going to have lunch with him.” Well, whatever Lautner did and worked. It’s now April 2011, and with production basically wrapped on the very last film in the franchise, it’s clear the actor and the fans couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the role. “My job for ‘Twilight’ was to bring ‘Twilight’ Jacob to life — the friendly, happy-go-lucky little Jacob,” Lautner explained back then of his arc. “And my job for ‘New Moon’ is completely different; I’ve been looking forward to that. I’ve been getting ready for it, and I can assure them that I will follow through with that job.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Tops Friday Box Office

Alien invasion flick bests ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Rango’ to claim top spot, while animated ‘Mars Needs Moms’ tanks. By Shawn Adler Michelle Rodriguez in “Battle: Los Angeles” Photo: Sony Pictures It showcases an epic battle between aliens and humans, but it turns out that the biggest winner of the weekend isn’t going to be Aaron Eckhart or the extra-terrestrials he faces in “Battle: Los Angeles,” but an entirely different, third combatant: the film itself. Led by an all-star cast headlined by the “Thank You For Smoking” star, “Battle: Los Angeles” topped all comers at the Friday night box office with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,417 theaters. The story of a surprise war waged by aliens for control of Earth, the flick should eek out approximately $40 for the weekend and another number one opening for the star of “The Dark Knight” in his first return to big budget action. The secret to the film’s success? Not treating an alien invasion movie like an alien invasion movie, director Jonathan Liebesman told MTV News . “This is a more down and dirty alien movie,” Liebesman said. “This is like if [‘Bourne Supremacy’ director] Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens, and shot it from the point of view of a platoon. It’s literally like ‘Black Hawk Down,’ if there were aliens in there. Like Iraqi war footage, but with aliens running around.” You’d be forgiven, meanwhile, for saying of the second place film, “My, what a big gross you have,” as the Brothers Grimm by way of Stephanie Meyer revisionist fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” scared up $5.7 million to claw its way near the top. The Catherine Hardwick directed and Amanda Seyfried starring film may seem to be similar to that little Kristen Stewart movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s just “Twilight” with a cape, Seyfried told MTV. “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried told us . “I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies. The truth is, it’s an entirely different story.” In third place, last weekend’s winner “Rango” managed a very healthy $5.5 million. The Johnny Depp starring flick about a chameleon who finds himself leading a small desert town as sheriff should bring its total to approximately $70 million by weekend’s close. In fourth place, “The Adjustment Bureau” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt managed a $3.4 million Friday. The biggest disappointment of the week was “Mars Needs Moms,” the newest animated film from Disney. Using motion capture technology and based on a story from Pulitzer Prize winner Berkeley Breathed, the reportedly expensive film managed just $1.8 million Friday and a fifth place finish. Among other films, “Beastly” scored $1.6 million for a sixth place finish, while “Just Go With It” managed an eighth place finish and $1.2 million. The Adam Sandler led comedy should pass $100 million sometime early next week. Rounding out the rest of the top ten, “Hall Pass” earned $1.5 million to come in seventh, “The King’s Speech” grabbed $1 million to finish ninth, and “Unknown” ran away with $975,000 to land in tenth.

Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ Could Begin Filming Next Year

‘Twilight’ author’s first adult novel is well on its way to the big screen. By Christoper Campbell Stephanie Meyer Photo: MTV News With the film installments of her “Twilight” novels not yet fully completed, Stephenie Meyer is already well into the development of her next film franchise. According to Deadline.com , the adaptation of the author’s first adult novel, “The Host,” could go before cameras as early as next year. Published in 2008, the book involves benevolent yet parasitic aliens who have taken over the minds of almost all the humans on Earth. Upon its release, Meyer described the plot to MTV News as ” ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers,’ if the aliens had won.” Although financing is not yet in place and no definite shooting schedule is planned for the sci-fi/horror hybrid, producer Steve Schwartz divulged that “Truman Show” Oscar-nominee Andrew Niccol is currently working on his third draft of the screenplay, with the author’s close involvement. Niccol is also signed on to direct the film. Schwartz, who is now budgeting the project with co-producers Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler, again noted that Meyer handpicked the filmmaker because Niccol’s directorial debut, “Gattaca,” is one of her favorite science-fiction films. However, his hire was not immediate. “We spent time with Andrew,” Schwartz explained. “Listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right.” Fans will have to wait and see if Meyer is also right about her dream cast for the film, which she told MTV News in 2008 includes Robert Redford, Matt Damon and both Ben and Casey Affleck. Another uncertainty is when — or if — Meyer will ever finish her two planned sequels to “The Host.” Regardless of whether or not the adaptation spawns further novels or movies, a 2011 shoot could put “The Host” in theaters before the “Twilight Saga” ends, depending on when the second part to the two-film adaptation of “Breaking Dawn” is released. Plus, with Meyer’s announcement of the “Eclipse” spin-off novella “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” there’s now a tease that Summit Entertainment could extend the hot vampire film series even further than a fifth installment.
