Celebrate Mick Jagger’s 68th Birthday with His Performance in Performance

Sixty-eight years ago today, a Hirschfeld caricature named Mick Jagger was born. In addition to inventing our current perception of rock stars, the Rolling Stones frontman has produced some of the darkest material ever to permeate the mainstream. While you could revisit the harrowing Altamont doc Gimme Shelter or Martin Scorsese’s 2008 concert film Shine a Light to celebrate Mick’s special occasion, Movieline is instead turning back to Mick’s performance in the once-abhorred, now-revered 1970 movie Performance . Justin Bieber’s ‘Never Say Never’ Is Third-Highest-Grossing Documentary Of All Time

Insiders say film could get nominated in documentary category at next year’s Oscars. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures The kid is hot. First, Justin Bieber became the first person since, well, himself to land two albums in the top five on the Billboard 200, and now his 3-D movie, “Never Say Never,” has vaulted into the #3 position on the list of top-grossing documentaries of all time. According to Box Office Mojo , “Never” has grossed $64,162,036 to date, putting it on track to possibly overtake the #2 doc of all time, “March of the Penguins,” which grossed more than $77 million. It’s unlikely to knock off the top documentary of all time, Michael Moore’s 2004 flick “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which rolled up $119 million, but with the “Never” director’s cut re-release last weekend (which brought in another $9 million), Bieber is positioned to conquer yet another medium. In his run to the top, Bieber has leaped over such lauded and popular docs as “Super Size Me,” Madonna’s “Truth or Dare,” Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine,” former Vice President Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” and the nature flick “Earth.” It also took the crown for the biggest opening weekend of any documentary , with a $29.5 million first weekend, squeezing past the $23 million open of “Fahrenheit.” Hollywood may end up catching Bieber Fever as well, with The Hollywood Reporter asking in a recent article whether “Never” could land the 17-year-old phenom a spot at the Oscars next year. A source told the trade magazine that “Never” had serious buzz at some post-Oscar parties thanks to its healthy grosses, which have impressed some Academy members. “You’d be surprised at the caliber of people who came up to Justin at the Vanity Fair party at the Sunset Tower, most of whom had seen the movie and loved it,” said an unnamed insider. “There was even talk of putting it up for an Oscar next year in the documentary category. People appreciate that it’s not just a kids’ movie.” The article mentioned that Bieber was one of the brightest stars at the Fair party, chatting up Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and working the room like a pro. Mick Jagger And Sting Repping The Roc? Johnny Nunez Made It Happen

Hip-hop photographer recalls persuading rock-star duo and film mogul Harvey Weinstein to flash the Roc diamond, in Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez Johnny Nunez Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Johnny Nunez In the playbook for rap stardom, few things are as essential as being photographed by Johnny Nunez. The New York photog has snapped some of the most iconic images in hip-hop, from Jay-Z and Nas sharing a champagne toast to Mick Jagger, Sting and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein each flashing the Roc diamond in a picture together. For the latter, Nunez exhibited his trademark charm to pull off the feat (anyone in New York City social circles can attest to this), but he endured a hostile environment in the process. Nunez has been reflecting on his career lately, with both a documentary on his life (“Shooting Stars”) previewing on the festival circuit and a New Era cap collaboration (to benefit the Eye Can Foundation for the blind). “A client of mine’s friend said [to him], ‘Why did you bring a photographer?’ ” Nunez told Mixtape Daily about snapping the Jagger, Sting and Weinstein pic that paid homage to Roc-A-Fella Records. “I looked back, and all I saw was all these ice grills [looking at me]. So I thought, ‘Wow, what am I gonna do?’ ” The event was a Vanity Fair party overseas, and Nunez had accompanied Damon Dash — he worked as the hip-hop mogul’s personal photographer — and his entourage. Nunez saw the three powerhouse celebrities together in the distance and put his hustle to work. “I said, ‘Excuse me, could I get a photo?’ And I heard the other photographers: ‘What is he doing?’ ” Nunez recalled. “I could feel the security guards wanting to yank me.” Sting agreed, and Nunez asked the singer if he could put his hands together in the diamond symbol made popular by Jay-Z as recognition of his and Dash’s label, Roc-A-Fella. Sting obliged but asked what the gesture meant. “It’s a universal symbol of love,” Nunez shot back. Weinsten also agreed to toss up the Roc. The Rolling Stones frontman hesitated, but Sting nudged his peer and soon all three cooperated. “I went back to the same guys [who were hating on me], and they said, ‘That’s what I’m talking about,’ ” Nunez recalled. “The moral of that story is, I try to do things at that very moment that either have never been done before or aren’t generic,” he added. “I try to be organic.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Teleworkers Can Get More … Satisfaction

A home office from Flickr user Johan Larsson Sorry for the play on The Rolling Stones . I’m just tired of hearing all the hoopla about The Beatles on iTunes. Which brings me to the point: A new study says teleworkers (like TreeHugger writers ) are more “satisfied” with their jobs than traditional keep-a-desk-warm or be-watched-by-your-supervisor workers. No offense to desks or super… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jay-Z To Discuss ‘Decoded’ Memoir At New York Public Library

Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards will also speak about his memoir, “Life,” this fall. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z and Keith Richards Photo: Getty Images Jay-Z is releasing his memoir “Decoded” this fall, but the superstar lyricist will have to keep things quiet during one of his upcoming public appearances. The Brooklyn MC is slated to speak at the New York Public Library on November 15. Jigga will chat about “Decoded” as part of the “Live From the NYPL” fall series, which also features literary stars such as Toni Morrison and Zadie Smith. The library appears to be down with making some noise next season, as Jay-Z isn’t the only musical artist hitting the library: Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards will also dish about his upcoming tome, “Life,” on October 29. “We’re very excited to reveal to the public a different side of their personality — the literary side!” a rep for the library told MTV News. “Decoded,” which is scheduled to hit shelves the same month as his library appearance, is a memoir punched up by insightful explorations of Jay’s hard-hitting rhymes. The book was penned in collaboration with journalist Dream Hampton and delves into his steady rise from pushing product on the streets of Brooklyn to stacking hits as one of the most revered lyricists in the game. The publication of “Decoded” will cap a long period in which the MC’s autobiography remained in literary limbo. Hov and Hampton had initially begun work on “The Black Book” in 2003, which was set to be released in 2004 via a deal with MTV Books/ Pocket Books. Hov pulled the plug on the project in 2005. In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Jigga admitted that “Decoded,” which is now being published by Speigel & Grau , has been completed for years. The MC revealed that his hesitance to release the project stemmed from the personal nature of the subject matter, much of which Hov was confronting for the first time. “It’s too much. For the book, I was interviewed, people close to me were interviewed. So I was learning a lot of things I didn’t know as a child,” Jay-Z said. “It’s not anything I haven’t said in the past, in songs. It’s just more detailed. A song is three minutes long. A book doesn’t have to rhyme, and it has no time limit, so you can say exactly how everything went.” What do you think Jay-Z will discuss in his upcoming memoir? Let us know in the comments below! Bun B Rocks With Live Band At Houston’s House of Blues

The Trill O.G. ‘s hometown album release party set included UGK classics and a Pimp C tribute. By Cynithia Allen Bun B (file) Photo: MTV News HOUSTON — The Trill Bun B put on a memorable show for his fellow Houstonians on the heels of the release of arguably his best album to date, Trill O.G. Bun’s official album party on Wednesday was at the House of Blues and the room was packed. The Texas MC opened up the show with the classic UGK track “Pourin’ Up,” sending the crowd — reciting the track word-for-word — into a frenzy. “Smoking out, pourin’ up/ Keeping lean up in my cup, call my cars got leather and wood/ In my ‘hood, we call it buck,” Bun rapped. The Underground King then reintroduced himself to Houston saying, “What’s up Houston? My name is Bun B, I’m from Port Arthur, Texas, and my only n—-s is UGK, and it’s UGK for life!” Next up, Bun showed a different side of his stage show, performing with a live band the on the song “Trillionaires” and then for the duration of the night. “I feel like the Rolling Stones with this band,” Bun laughed. “I feel like a rock star.” The Port Arthur rapper then went deeper into the UGK vault, performing songs like “Pocket Full of Stones,” (Jay-Z’s) “Big Pimpin’ ” and “Front, Back & Side to Side,” all of which led to an emotional point in Bun’s set. “I feel like Pimp is in the building, man,” Bun said, referring to his fallen UGK partner Pimp C . “Y’all just don’t know, I really miss my brother. I love my brother.” Shortly after paying tribute to Pimp C, Bun performed a snippet of the classic “One Day.” He followed that up with another touching tribute to some of rap’s dearly missed figures, including Tupac Shakur, the Notorious B.I.G. and Houston legends Big Moe, DJ Screw and Big Hawk. Bun then shifted the mood with a choir-style sound, commanding the audience to recite after him. “Now the South is in the house and they can’t do nothing about it,” Bun said, rapping the popular hook from “Draped Up,” the first single from his 2005 album Trill. Bun wrapped the show with “Trillionaire,” off his Trill O.G., captivating the entire venue. What do you think of Bun’s newest album? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Bun B

Rolling Stones, Black Keys make strong debuts on next week’s top 200. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Columbia Records You’d think that the fourth “Glee” album within seven months would burn out the audience for Fox’s runaway high school musical show. But you’d be wrong. The peppy covers juggernaut will continue its reign of chart terror next week when Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers will easily take the #1 slot thanks to sales of 136,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The disc — featuring covers of songs by the Beatles, All-American Rejects, Christina Aguilera, Bonnie Tyler and U2 — is the second #1 “Glee” record in a row after last month’s The Power of Madonna disc. Coming in at #2 was the reissue of the Rolling Stones ‘ landmark Exile on Main St. album, which sold more than 76,000 copies. Just behind, with the best chart debut of their career, are Ohio blues duo the Black Keys , whose Brothers moved more than 73,000 copies for a #3 bid, besting a solid debut at #5 by Nas and Damian Marley ‘s collaboration Distant Relatives (57,000). (The Billboard 200 chart now includes older catalog albums like Exile ; in the current albums chart, the Keys are at #2.) Also breaking into the top 10 with a career best are Band of Horses , whose major-label debut, Infinite Arms, gave the tattoos and tumbleweeds rockers a solid #7 berth on sales of 45,000. The final debut in the top 10, at #10, is the second effort from indie-dance punks LCD Soundsystem , This Is Happening, which moved 31,000 copies.
