Roman Polanski Taps Wife Emmanuelle Seigner For Latest, Venus In Fur

Roman Polanski will go French in his next project based on a Tony Award-winning stage-play and he’s tapping his wife to play the star. Polanski is adapting Avid Ives’ stage play Venus in Fur , relocating the setting to Paris from New York, casting his spouse Emmanuelle Seigner who auditions a role in a sadomasochistic drama. It is not clear if Polanski’s on-going warrant from a statutory rape charge dating back to 1978 prompted him to change the setting to France where he has lived since the alleged incident. Last year, he directed Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly in another play adaptation, Carnage , which was also set in New York, though directed from the safety of France. This will be Seigner’s the third collaboration with her husband, following Frantic , Bitter Moon , and The Ninth Gate , according to BBC . In the latest collaboration, she will star opposite French heart-throb Louis Garrel. “I’ve been looking for a chance to make a film in French with Emmanuelle for a long time,” Polanski said in a statement. “Reading Venus in Fur , I realized the moment had arrived.” The Lionsgate production will begin shooting in November, so perhaps a Cannes premiere is in the works. Quick synopsis from Wikipedia: The writer-director of a new play, an adaptation of the novel which inspired the term Masochism, is on the telephone lamenting the inadequacies of all the actresses who showed up that day to audition for the lead character. Suddenly, at the last minute, a new actress bursts in, the exemplar of every fault he has decried: needy, crude, compliant, desperate. Yet over the next 90 minutes, the balance of power shifts as the actress establishes total dominance over the director, exactly as in the novel. [ Source: BBC , Wikipedia ]

Roman Polanski to Adapt Kinky Broadway Hit Venus in Fur [PIC]

That’s Venus in Fur , not Venus in Furs , though the two are related. The singular SKINsation under discussion is by playwright David Ives , fresh off a successful Broadway run starring Nina Arianda (who won a Tony Award for her performance) as a young actress who capitalizes on her apparent naivete and desperation to seduce the director of an erotic play based on the masochist masterpiece. Now Roman Polanski has signed on to turn the play into a French-language film; as the world’s most famous dirty old man (to put it mildly) we can totally see how the idea of a young woman taking advantage of a powerful man would appeal to Polanski. But in an interesting twist, he has cast his 46-year-old wife Emmanuelle Seigner (above) (who met Polanski when she was 17, by the way) as the female lead of the film and 29-year-old The Dreamers (2003) star Louis Garrell in the male lead. Will we see the dynamics reversed as a young actor seduces a powerful older woman? Time will tell, but either way it’s bound to please (wink, wink). Trailblazing Hair Stylist Vidal Sassoon Passes Away at 84

Trailblazing hair and fashion icon Vidal Sassoon has died at the age of 84, according to the L.A. Times , following reports in recent years that he’d been battling leukemia. The hair styling legend had built an empire after making a name for himself with game-changing designs for women in the 1960s, including bold coifs for the likes of movie stars Nancy Kwan and Mia Farrow. Actress Nancy Kwan shot to fame with 1960s’s The World of Suzie Wong , which is often incorrectly credited as the film for which Vidal Sassoon gave her this iconic slanted bob. Rather, the Sassoon cut was done for Kwan’s 1963 comedy The Wild Affair . (Kwan’s famous photo, below, was shot for Vogue.) Years later, he remembered the design in a chat with NPR : “I looked at her bone structure, and I thought we could do almost anything with Nancy. And I started to cut at the very back of her head and I said, ‘Great neckline; I’ll go shorter.’ And I went short in the back and graduated into more length at the sides, and I suddenly realized we had a bob that could be international.” In 1967, Sassoon and his scissors were tapped to transform another ingenue for the screen with Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby , for which he gave Mia Farrow the close-cropped pixie cut that would become her trademark. Sassoon, a London native who was a member of the anti-fascist 43 Group following World War II, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2009. His life and legacy was the subject of the documentary Vidal Sassoon: The Movie , which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and opened in limited release in 2011. [via LA Times ]

‘The Man Was a Giant’: NYC Film Guru Amos Vogel Dead at 91

Sad news out of Manhattan: Amos Vogel, whose championing of foreign and independent film changed the direction of modern cinema over the last half-century, has passed away. He was 91. Vogel’s Cinema 16 events, introduced in 1947, battled censors and opened viewers’ eyes to the likes of Roman Polanski, Yasujirō Ozu, Robert Bresson, John Cassavetes and scores of other auteurs — in some cases before the word “auteur” meant anything. He also co-founded the New York Film Festival, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary as the city’s leading light of movie culture. Over at the Web site of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which as recently as last fall hosted Vogel to kick off a countdown to this year’s milestone NYFF, Eugene Hernandez offers a nice look back at the film firebrand’s life — including a statement by Vogel devotee Martin Scorsese: “If you’re looking for the origins of film culture in America, look no further than Amos Vogel. Between Cinema 16 (which he ran with his beloved wife Marcia and which opened our eyes to Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Bruce Conner, Kenneth Anger, Cassavetes’ Shadows, and hundreds of other visionary films and filmmakers), The New York Film Festival (which he co-founded with Richard Roud), and his book Film As a Subversive Art , Amos opened the doors to every possibility in film viewing, film exhibition, film curating, film appreciation. He was also unfailingly generous, encouraging and supportive of so many young filmmakers, including me when I was just starting to make my first pictures. No doubt about it – the man was a giant.” Vogel, who turned 91 a week ago today, passed away surrounded by family in the Greenwich Village apartment he shared with his late wife Marcia, who died in 2009. REVIEW: Brisk, Disciplined Carnage Is Good — Not Great — Polanski

In Roman Polanski’s Carnage , two couples square off in a 4-way — or is it a 48-way? — skirmish involving parenting issues, class resentment, the self-centered nature of our society, and both sexual politics and the other kind. This is a drawing-room comedy set in what just may be one of the outer circles of hell: The well-appointed (but just shabby enough) Brooklyn apartment of a persnickety couple who advertise their liberal ideals perhaps more obviously than they practice them. These two insufferable individuals are meeting with a matched set of same, the perhaps better-heeled (and equally smug) parents of a boy who struck their son with a stick, knocking out a tooth or two in the process. By the time each of these mini-nightmare characters has had a swing at each of the others — and by the time one of them has vomited on a valuable art book — the permutations of animosity and indignation have multiplied into an algebraic equation of headachey proportions.

AnnaLynne McCord Ass in Riding Pants of the Day

Whenever I see riding pants I think of luxury…you know high society people in their high society places doing high society things with their million dollar horses….like some kind of secret society for the elite….that was until today…because today….Annalynne McCord is wearing the shit….all jacked up her ass….even though the only thing she should be known for riding is a couple of producers and possibly a sybian in the corner of the party…because she’ll do anything for attention….and unfortunalely…I’ll do anything for tight pants.

Kate Winslet Likes Child Rapists of the Day

I get that Roman Polanski is a cinematic genius who was just fucked up when his wife and their unborn baby was killed by Charles Manson, so fucked up that he did the natural thing guys do when they are at their lowest, and fed a teen drugs and had sex with her, forcing him to flee the country and live in exile in Switzerland, never to return because it is not worth getting arrested for…. I also get that you can’t judge a man by his sexual dysfunction, I mean if we did, we wouldn’t have priests to talk to, elementary school teachers to teach or kids, birthday party clowns….or gays and lesbian friends. But I like to point and laugh when actors or other people are hamming it up with perverts and kissing them like they aren’t perverts because it is a political move for their careers, because the man is a genius, without realizing all the Christians back in America, who are likely perverts themselves, just oppresed properly, are going to be offended by her being so Euro and lax about sex offenders….cuz Europe remains far cooler than America on all levels…. Carnage Trailer: Three Oscar Winners, One Nominee Bicker Like Children

What happens when you let Academy Award winner Roman Polanski confine three Oscar winners (and one lonely nominee) in a single house to film an entire argument-driven black comedy? Carnage , the upcoming feature from the controversial filmmaker which stars, on one side, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz, and on the other side, Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly, as two sets of parents who meet to calmly discuss — and then outright argue — over their sparring school children.
