Wrap It Up: Indiana HIV Outbreak Worsens After 120 New Cases Confirmed In One County

Indiana HIV Outbreak Worsens After 120 Cases Confirmed An Indiana county at the heart of an H.I.V. outbreak has seen a “significant increase” in the number of cases more than two weeks into a short-term needle exchange program, state health officials said. Via NY Times reports: There are now 120 confirmed H.I.V. cases and 10 preliminary positive cases tied to Scott County, the Indiana State Department of Health said on Friday. That is up from 106 the previous week. Health officials who declared an epidemic last month have said that they expect the number of cases to rise as more people are tested. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent staff members to Indiana last month to help with testing, the Health Department said in a news release. The growing number of cases could put pressure on Gov. Mike Pence to extend the 30-day needle exchange program that he approved on March 26. A spokeswoman for the governor, Kara Brooks, said on Friday that Mr. Pence was reviewing reports and recommendations from health officials and would decide within the next few days whether to extend the program beyond April 25. The Scott County outbreak has occurred among intravenous drug users and primarily involves the use of the high-powered painkiller Opana, health officials have said. The county usually sees about five H.I.V. cases a year. Since Mr. Pence approved the temporary exchange, 5,322 clean syringes have been provided to 86 participants, health officials said Friday. About 1,400 used syringes have been returned. Brittany Combs, a public health nurse for the Scott County Health Department, said the needle exchange program picked up a lot last week, in large part because a mobile unit has been traveling around neighborhoods seeking to get more intravenous drug users into the program. “You have to gain that trust, and I think we’re slowly starting to do that,” Ms. Combs said. But the future of the Scott County program, as well as the fate of legislation that would allow needle exchange programs in other counties, is not clear. Wrap it up and stop sharing needles, folks!!!!!!!!

For Your Information: U.S. Unemployment Rate Falls To 6-Year Low 5.8%, 214,000 Jobs Created

Look at what we have here… Unemployment Rate Down to 5.8%, 214,000 Jobs Created Via Reuters U.S. job growth increased at a fairly brisk clip in October and the unemployment rate fell to a fresh six-year low of 5.8 percent, underscoring the economy’s resilience in the face of slowing global demand. Despite the strengthening labor market picture, wage growth remained tepid, suggesting the Federal Reserve would be in no hurry to start lifting interest rates. Employers added 214,000 new jobs to their payrolls last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.9 percent, even as more people entered the labor force, a sign of strength in the jobs market. Data for August and September were revised to show 31,000 more jobs created than previously reported. “Today’s jobs report confirms that the U.S. remains the bright spot in a global economic picture filling with clouds,” said Michael Griffin, managing director at CEB in Arlington, Virginia. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 231,000 new jobs last month and for the unemployment rate to hold steady. U.S. stock index futures edged up on the data. Prices for U.S. Treasury bond prices fell slightly and the dollar was little changed. Monthly job growth has exceeded 200,000 for nine straight months, the longest stretch since 1994, sufficient strength to keep the economy on a higher growth path after it expanded at a 3.5 percent pace in the third quarter. Maybe Barry-O is doing a better job than the GOP (and some dissociative Democrats) wants to give him credit for. Image via Shutterstock

Horse Meat: Now at Taco Bell!!

Yo quiero ground beef tainted with horse meat at Taco Bell! Europe’s growing horse meat problem escalated Friday as Britain’s food regulator said that new testing had found the Bell’s beef supply tainted with it. Taco Bell parent company Yum Brands said the horsemeat issue is limited to the UK market , and that it will step up testing of its beef going forward. Europe’s horsemeat scandal erupted in January, when testing in Ireland revealed that some ground beef products sold there contained equine DNA. Burger King horsemeat samples were also found in February. The tainted beef epidemic continues to ensnare numerous well-known brands, prompting product withdrawals, consumer concerns and government investigations. Britain’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) said on Friday it had conducted 1,797 tests over the last seven days, 99 percent of which were negative. However, four tests were positive, it said. Four too many. They were for Taco Bell ground beef, beef skewers made by catering company Brakes, and Birds Eye ready meals – spaghetti bolognese and beef lasagne. The Birds Eye meals were withdrawn from sale last week after tests on a product the company sold in Belgium via the same supplier came back positive. Taco Bell tested meat at its UK restaurants as soon as news of the horsemeat contamination surfaced, spokesman Christopher Fuller said in a statement. Taco Bell, like many other companies, cannot say for certain whether any of the horsemeat-tainted product was served to consumers, he saod. The chain will test every batch of beef when it arrives at its processor and again before it is delivered to restaurants to make sure it is 100 percent beef. “We apologize to our customers and take this very seriously,” he added. For Yum, food contamination hasn’t been limited to ground beef, either. Its nearly 5,300 KFC restaurants in China have seen business plummet after news reports and government investigations found chemical residue in its chicken supply. The horse meat scandal has not extended to the U.S., at least not yet, but given the complexities of the food supply chain, you have to wonder. Wonder if a homemade caprese pizza recipe isn’t a better bet, that is.

Katy Perry Postpones Tour Dates Due To Illness

Pop star reschedules two concerts after ‘an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration.’ By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Another day, another sick pop star cancels summer tour dates. Just two days after Taylor Swift announced to fans that she would have to postpone dates on her Speak Now Tour because of bronchitis, Katy Perry said on Friday (July 8) that she will have to postpone two dates on her California Dreams trek after suffering from “an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration.” According to a statement from concert promoters Jam Productions, Perry has rescheduled her July 8 show at Chicago’s Allstate Arena for August 21, and her July 9 gig at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center for August 23 in the same venues. And once recovered, Perry said she plans to make it up to her fans. “I apologize to my fans in Chicago and the Twin Cities for not being able to perform this weekend, but I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!” she said. Perry also took to Twitter to deliver the unfortunate news, tweeting , “Chicago and St. Paul – I’m so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow’s shows. But I’ll be back 8/21 (CHI) and 8/23 (St. Paul)!” Despite the tour-date postponement, the pop singer has been riding high off of her mega-successful Teenage Dream album, which is closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s #1 singles record. If the LP’s recently released “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” hits the top of the Billboard Hot 100, she’ll become the first female artist to have five chart-topping songs off one album. Additionally, Perry will become the first artist to nab the record since Jackson, who had five #1 singles off his Bad album in the late-’80s. Send your well-wishes for a speedy recovery to Katy in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

F*cked Up Teenager Of The Day: 16-Year-Old Charged With Murdering His Great-Grandparents

These kids ain’t sh*t! A 16-year-old has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder over the shotgun deaths of his great-grandparents in a tiny farming community where the elderly couple had lived for decades. The boy, who has not been named, was arrested on Thursday evening following the deaths of Laura Clagett, 82, and her husband Charles, 80, at their home in Hugo. The town, on the eastern Colorado plains that has a population of 770, is said to be deeply shocked by the killings. The murder probe began on Wednesday when the Colorado State Patrol was sent to a crash scene outside Hugo and found a pickup truck that had overturned. The boy was rescued from the vehicle and taken to a Denver hospital 105 miles away where his injuries were described as not life-threatening. When Lincoln County deputies went to the home of the truck’s registered owners to tell them about the accident, they walked into a gruesome scene. The elderly couple had been shot dead in their bedroom. Lincoln County Coroner Jennifer Nestor said on Friday that the pair both died from close-range shotgun blasts and may have been dead for three days before their bodies were found, Reuters reports. Investigators said there are no other suspects involved and found no sign of burglary. According to the Denver Post, the boy began living with his great-grandparents in September at the start of the school year. Steve Johnson, the assistant director of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, said a significant amount of money, thought to be about $12,000, was found in the pickup at the crash scene. Until Thursday evening, authorities were only referring to the boy as the sole suspect. SMH. Source

WikiLeaks founder says guards against death threats

LONDON/STOCKHOLM — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Friday he and colleagues were taking steps to protect themselves after death threats following the publication of leaked U.S. diplomatic cables on their website. One of Assange's lawyers said he would also fight any attempt to extradite his client to face questions over alleged sexual misconduct, adding that he believed foreign powers were influencing Sweden in the matter. Washington is furious about the leak of hundreds of confidential diplomatic cables that have given unvarnished and sometimes embarrassing insights into the foreign policy of the United States and its allies. Answering questions online from an undisclosed location, the 39-year-old Australian said anyone making threats against his life should be charged with incitement to murder. “The threats against our lives are a matter of public record, however, we are taking the appropriate precautions to the degree that we are able when dealing with a superpower,” Assange was quoted as saying on the Guardian website. Britain's Guardian is one of a number of newspapers around the world with early access to diplomatic cables seen by WikiLeaks. U.S. teen arrested as cartel hitman in Mexico

CUERNAVACA, Mexico — Soldiers in Mexico have captured a 14-year-old U.S. citizen suspected of being a drug gang hitman as he attempted to travel to the United States. Edgar Jimenez, known as “El Ponchis,” is believed to work for the South Pacific drug cartel in Morelos state, outside Mexico City, the army said on Friday. Media reports last month on the search for a boy with the same nom de guerre said he could be as young as 12. The boy was caught late Thursday as he boarded a plane in the city of Cuernavaca. He was traveling to the border city of Tijuana with two of his sisters, one of whom is believed to be the lover of one of the cartel's bosses, the army said. He was brought to a regional office of the Mexico's attorney general's Office in Cuernavaca on Friday and told reporters there that he participated in at least four decapitations. He said he was “drugged and under threat that if I didn't, they would kill me.” “El Ponchis” made headlines last month as reports of his grisly murders, including beheadings, surfaced. He acknowledged having killed at least seven people under the influence of drugs provided by a cartel leader, according to an army statement. The Mexican daily newspaper La Razon said in November that “El Ponchis” was paid $3,000 for each murder he committed. The three Jimenez siblings had allegedly wanted to cross to San Diego, where they have relatives. Murders committed by minors, ranging from shoplifting to murder for the cartels, have risen across Mexico this year, state officials say. Parents in the violent cities of Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana on the U.S. border say children as young as eight want to grow up to be drug lords, as the thrills and wealth of the trafficking world touches their lives. added by: iGoogle
