Chinese Remake of Blood Simple Won’t Be That Simple

American remakes of foreign films have become so commonplace that even a statute of limitations barely exists anymore; Le Dîner de Cons — the French film that Dinner for Schmucks was based on — came out in 1998. So by those standards, Zhang Yimou’s Chinese conversion of the Coen Brothers’ Blood Simple — A Woman, A Gun and a Noodle Shop — feels positively warranted. After all, it has been 26 years since the original came out.

REVIEW: Other Guys Leaps to the Head of the Summer Comedy Class

Adam McKay’s comedy The Other Guys has a lot going for it: Even though it mines perennial cop-buddy-movie material, it doesn’t feel generic or strained, and unlike other recent comedies — Dinner for Schmucks pops to mind — it never descends into grating self-consciousness. Forget impressing us with its cleverness; it’s happy to seduce us with its dumbness, and when McKay and his performers — chief among them Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Eva Mendes — dangle that shiny lure, damn it if it doesn’t work at least half the time.

Dinner for Schmucks Makes a Later Reservation

The Paul Rudd/Steve Carell comedy Dinner for Schmucks has been pushed back from July 23 to July 30, where it’ll go up against Zac Efron’s Charlie St. Cloud . You may recall that the Vanessa Hudgens vehicle Beastly just moved out of that date so as not to pit the two lovebirds against each other. Why stop there? Efron should really get to work seducing Rudd in an effort to, uh, maximize his opening. (I’m sorry.) [ Deadline ]
