‘Rock Of Ages’: Behind The Star-Studded Cameos

Director Adam Shankman explains how ’80s icons like Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson ended up in the movie musical. By Amy Wilkinson Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta in “Rock of Ages” Photo: The ’80s are alive and well in director Adam Shankman’s movie musical ” Rock of Ages ,” which shimmied into theaters Friday (June 15). Based on the hit Broadway production of the same name, the flick follows would-be musician Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) as he falls for new-in-town Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) and lands his big break opening for rock legend Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) at the famed Bourbon Room. The soundtrack is stuffed with the era’s biggest hits like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “I Want to Know What Love Is,” but the toe-tapping tunes aren’t the only throwbacks to the decade of decadence. Pay close attention and you’ll spot a number of ’80s music mavens. A major plotline in the film centers around conservative advocate Patricia Whitmore’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) attempt to shutter the Bourbon Room and reclaim the Sunset Strip for more wholesome pursuits. The struggle reaches its climax in a rocking protest outside the club with Patricia and company facing off against club employee Lonny (Russell Brand) while singing a mash-up of “We Built This City” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” It’s here among the assembled masses that you’ll recognize a few familiar faces, like Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson. But how did the cameos come to be? “I had said if anyone from the period wants to participate, there is a scene I’m happy to accommodate, ’cause it just felt right. … So the studio just kind of put out the word, and that’s what happened,” Shankman said. “I would get the phone call the day before going, ‘This is who’s coming tomorrow,’ and I’m like, ‘Seriously?!’ ” Having a bevy of rock stars on a single set might sound like a nightmare of warring egos and AquaNet, but in fact, Shankman said the stars sang for their supper, staging an impromptu concert. “The greatest part of having those guys — [REO Speedwagon’s] Kevin Cronin, [Extreme’s] Nuno Bettencourt and Sebastian — all of them, our lunch that night was at 3:30 in the morning, and during lunch for the whole crew, they did a whole concert, and they sang all the songs.” Now that’s a scene we want to see on the DVD bonus reel! ‘So You Think You Can Dance’: The Ladies Bring It

From crumping to alien space dancing, sexy ladies stole the show at the Salt Lake City auditions. By Natasha Chandel Witney Carson on “So You Think You Can Dance” Photo: Season nine of “So You Think You Can Dance” just got hot … real hot. The Salt Lake City auditions not only brought forth some stupendous dancers but also scored the first tickets on judge Mary Murphy’s infamous hot-tamale train. Ballroom was the predominantly featured dance style Wednesday night, although we saw glimpses of everything from crumping to burlesque jazz to (you guessed it) alien space dance. In the audition episodes thus far , the men have managed to stand out just a little more than the women. Well, Salt Lake City just tipped the scale in favor of the ladies, leaving judge Nigel Lythgoe and guest judge Adam Shankman drooling. Here’s our “tamales” rundown from last night’s show. Hot Tamales Kicking off the show in high gear was Witney Carson. Not only did her sensual cha-cha tango receive praise for its technique, she made slaves out of the judges. “I am a slave for you,” Shankman proclaimed, while Lythgoe commented on her “smoking-hot face” and compared her to season 3 ballroom favorite Anya Barnis. But the greatest compliment may have been in the form of a simple, shrill scream from Mary Murphy declaring her the season’s first ticket holder on the hot-tamale train. Carson wasn’t the only dancer awarded a golden ticket. Deanna Tomasetta was dubbed “special,” giddy but super-fierce crumper Mariah Spears was called “tremendous,” and burlesque jazz dancer Rachel Applehans was applauded for her confidence. Odd Tamales No reality competition series is complete without its share of oddballs, and the Salt Lake City auditions found its odd tamale in Lynn Gravatt. A former aerospace engineer, Gravatt gave it all up to pursue her passion for dance. Alien space dance, to be exact. Claiming “something” comes through her to make her move, Gravatt performed enthusiastically for the judges. Of course, they didn’t put her through, but Gravatt had achieved her goal of showing the world you can be anything you want to be. Odd things do come in green packages. Gene Lonardo sure did. The real shocker of the night, Lonardo decided to paint himself green and perform the life story of a male praying mantis. Yes, you read correctly. What seemed like a disaster waiting to happen actually turned out to be the surprise of the night. “You’re so brilliant,” Shankman told the unbelievably agile dancer, whom the judges felt would be a treat for contemporary choreographer Sonya Tayeh. Sad Tamales There were a few sad stories interspersed throughout the show, including that of Dareian Kujawa, who was kicked out of his home and disowned for his pursuit of dance. Leroy Martinez, a heavier-set dancer, had overcome a rough childhood and was now giving back through an after-school dance program. Although both put forth commendable efforts, projecting true spirit, neither was granted a golden ticket. Martinez did receive a standing ovation from the judges and the crowd. Contestant Adrien Lee had a different story. After being cut at the last stage in season seven of “SYTYCD,” Lee was disheartened, as was Murphy, who had the tough job of delivering the bad news. After taking a year off, he decided to try again and won yet another ticket and another chance to make his dreams come true in Las Vegas. Salt Lake City was the final audition city before the big cuts in Vegas, and it definitely featured some of the sexiest dancers of the lot. Whether any will actually make it to the top 20 remains to be seen, but next week we will be one step closer to finding out as “So You Think You Can Dance” moves on to Sin City. Who was your favorite dancer on “So You Think You Can Dance”? Let us know in the comments.

‘Rock of Ages’ Director Tried To Get Robert Pattinson

‘There were a million times when we were supposed to get together and talk, but the dude is so busy,’ Adam Shankman tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: Getty Images At the Hollywood premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” Tinseltown was abuzz with all things Kristen Stewart , Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner . Even Adam Shankman , director of the upcoming movie musical “Rock of Ages,” couldn’t help but gush about Pattinson in particular. “Rob is a good singer. There were times during the ‘Rock of Ages’ casting process [we thought of him], and he was never available,” Shankman told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. “That just was never able to happen. There were a million times when we were supposed to get together and talk, but the dude is so busy.” Aside from not being able to land Pattinson for a role, Shankman said the musical will indeed rock — so much so that even the men out there will enjoy it. “The movie really is like a musical for straight guys,” Shankman laughed. “Guys are going to be super pumped to go with their girlfriends.” Though the film’s casting process snagged headlines early on, we haven’t heard or seen too much from “Rock of Ages,” but Shankman said that should change soon, when a trailer arrives this month. The director said the wait will be worth it for all of the craziness we’ll end up seeing. “It is a batsh– crazy movie,” he said. “It is a ride from beginning to end; it is giant movie stars singing classic-rock karaoke in ’80s drag having the time of their lives. It’s just a big party.” The one thing we have seen from the film is an official snapshot of Tom Cruise , rocking out, minus a shirt, and at the premiere, Shankman hyped up the “Mission: Impossible” star’s rock abilities. “For Tom, well, I would say he does an insane version of ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me,’ that every time I show it to people, they’re like, ‘Can we see that again?’ ” Shankman said. According to the director, things get even more heated when Cruise teams up with Malin Akerman for a power ballad. “He and Malin Akerman do one of the most outrageous interpretations of ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’; I just hope I get it past the ratings board,” he said. The number is so out-there, according to Shankman, that he considers it the craziest thing he’s directed. “[Malin] is fearless, she’s awesome,” he said. “We knew you couldn’t tell jokes about rockers in the ’80s halfway, so it’s very funny, but it’s also sexy and it’s a little insane. I’ve never made anything that is that nuts. ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Actor Diego Boneta Lands Lead In ‘Rock Of Ages’ Movie

Boneta will play Drew in the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway show alongside Tom Cruise. By Jocelyn Vena Diego Gonzalez Boneta Photo: Valerie Macon/ Gettu Images Diego Boneta has gone from living it up on “90210” to guesting on “Pretty Little Liars,” and now the Mexican actor and former star of the telenovela “Rebelde” has landed the much coveted male lead in the big-screen adaptation of “Rock of Ages.” “To be authentic, I like to cast as close to the real age as possible and wanted someone who has all the innocence and guilelessness of Drew,” the movie’s director, Adam Shankman, told The Hollywood Reporter . “And that’s Diego.” Shankman also confirmed the casting on his Twitter account, writing, “He is the perfect movie Drew. He’s going to blow your minds.” Boneta will star as newbie rocker Drew alongside the flick’s leading lady, former “Dancing With the Stars” pro Julianne Hough. The film also stars Tom Cruise as an established rock star who has his sights set on Hough, plus Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige, whose character runs the club where Hough’s character works as a stripper. Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti and Amy Adams are also reportedly in negotiations for roles in the film. Last month, Brand revealed to MTV News that there was one big thing holding up the deal. “I think they’re trying to work out what I like to call ‘scheduling,’ ” he joked, alluding to the fact that his salary was still being discussed. The film will begin production on May 19 in Miami, which will double as the story’s Los Angeles setting. “I can’t shut down the Sunset Strip for six weeks, and in Miami we’re turning four blocks basically into a backlot,” Shankman explained. “We’ll digitally add in the hills.”
