Source: Jim Steinfeldt / Getty The King of Pop is headed to New York. According to Variety, The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage announced on Tuesday that a Michael Jackson musical is in the works, inspired by the life of the influential entertainer. The show is expected to play on Broadway in 2020. There is no word on the title of the show or which theater it’ll play in yet. Music for the project will pull from MJ’s catalogue of hits — including “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Beat It,” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” Ballet star and Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon ( An American in Paris ) will direct and choreograph the show. The musical will probably enter the same territory of other “juke box” shows like J ersey Boys, On Your Feet and Beautiful which documented the music of folks like The Four Seasons, Gloria Estefan and Carole King respectively. It’s yet to be revealed if the controversial aspects of Michael’s life – his 2005 child sexual abuse trial, the baby dangling, etc. — will be explored like biopics tend to do. We’ll keep you updated if any major updates should surface. Until then, are you ready to buy your ticket or nah?
You may not recognize the name Robert Osborne, but if you’re a fan of the Turner Classic Movies network, you almost certainly recognize his face. For 23 years, Osborn was the face of TCM, the number one cable destination for lovers of Old Hollywood and budding young filmmakers alike. A respected film historian and preservationist, Osborne was hand-selected by Ted Turner when the network launched in 1994. He was on the air to introduce the network’s very first film, Gone With the Wind, on April 14, 1994. “Robert was embraced by devoted fans who saw him as a trusted expert and friend,” TCM general manager Jennifer Dorian said in a statement released moments ago. “His calming presence, gentlemanly style, encyclopedia knowledge of film history, fervent support of film preservation and highly personal interviewing style all combined to make him a truly world-class host.” Dorian added: “Robert’s contributions were fundamental in shaping TCM into what it is today, and we owe him a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.” In addition to his time at TCM, Osborne worked as a columnist for The Hollywood Reporter for several decades. His “Rambling Reporter” column ran in the magazine from 1983 to 2009 and was considered a must-read amongst industry insiders. Tributes to Osborne began pouring in on social media within minutes of the announcement of this death, thus making the beloved TV icon a worldwide trending topic within minutes: “Very sad to hear about Robert Osborne passing. I programmed on TCM with him in 2015 & it was a treat. He couldn’t have been more charming,” tweeted filmmaker Edgar Wright. “Robert Osborne was a class act, a true gentleman & his historical nuggets as TCM host made watching those great old movies even better. RIP,” wrote Larry King. “All of us are better for having known him – I know I am,” said Osborne’s longtime co-star Ben Mankiwiecz. “So saddened by the death of Robert Osborne of @tcm. He helped spark my interest in classic films. He was a special man,” tweeted Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak. One Twitter user suggested perhaps the best method of paying tribute to a man whose life was so fully devoted to the cinema: “I think the best way to honor the life of Robert Osborne is to watch as many classic films as possible. Going to start right now. ” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam
In the years since Michael Jackson passed away in 2009, his eldest son, Prince Michael Jackson, has mostly kept a low profile. These days, Prince is trying his hand at acting and stepping behind the camera to direct music videos for up-and-coming artists, but it's his work with an important organization inspired by his father's generous spirit that got him to sit down with Robin Roberts on GMA this morning. Prince has started an organization called Heal LA, it's name inspired by his father's song “Heal the World.” He describes the group's endeavors in the clip below: “We have partnered with a charity called 'A Sense of Home,' which supports foster kids who have aged out of the system in a sort of preempt against homelessness because it's very hard to get on your feet once you've gotten out of the system,” Jackson says. Though his main reason for giving the interview was to promote Heal LA, but also took time to offer some insights into his feelings toward his iconic father. Asked for his favorite video from the King of Pop, Prince answered: “Personally I love 'Moonwalker,' and I know it's kind of an easy way out — it's so many different videos into one — but if I had to pick one specific, I would choose 'Smooth Criminal,” Asked how his father would feel about his kids' career choices, Prince answered: “As we were growing up my dad always said, 'I really don't care what you do in life, as long as you're happy doing it and you're the best at what you do. If you want to be a janitor at a high school, you should be the best janitor that you can be.'” Watch the full interview below:

‘The way I write my love songs comes out different,’ R&B upstart says of penning Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Cupid’s Got a Gun.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Shanell Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images Young Money’s Shanell has a voice as sweet as Red Velvet cake, but the singer/songwriter isn’t your average R&B pop tart. On her new single “Cupid’s Got a Gun” featuring Nicki Minaj, she’s as sharp with her lyrics as her boss Lil Wayne is with his rhymes. Shanell says the song represents the “tough skin” type of girls. “Me and my homegirl Mika Means were actually in the studio and we were coming up with stuff and we started that song, “Cupid’s Got a Gun,” Shanell told MTV News this week. “It’s a love song, but it’s a love song told in a different way. I’m not really a mushy person, so I express my emotions, it’s like, instead of saying I love you, it’s I f—ing love you. So the way I write my love songs comes out different. And it’s this energy that I felt that it needed, ’cause I consider myself a boss type of chick and I got a tough skin. I thought Nicki would be perfect to be on this record to exemplify that boss type of energy. I played it for her and she jumped right on it.” The song is the first effort from her forthcoming debut album. According to Shanell, “Cupid’s Got a Gun” wasn’t slated to be the first single but after it leaked to the Web earlier this month it drew a strong response. As a result, she and her team are prepping to work the song as a street single to tease the upcoming LP. She hopes to drop that full-length for the masses next summer. Meanwhile, she has her hand in other projects like her gig as the face clothing line Married to the Mob’s fall collection. The singer has also written a video treatment for “Cupid’s” that she described as a combination of “Smooth Criminal” and the movies “Sin City” and “Kill Bill.” “As a writer, there’s a picture in my head and I’m basically writing a story to the pictures that flash in my head,” Shanell explained. “So I always had the visual for the video in my head. But once we got Nicki on it, I thought, Oh, [those three as a mix would work]. I’ve written it out and I’m looking for a director now.” Are you looking forward to seeing the collaboration from Young Money’s first ladies? Tell us in the comments! After videos of Michael Jackson’s kids Blanket and Paris surfaced yesterday, I took Blanket’s Star Wars monologues to heart and remembered my old lightsaber in the attic. But nefarious grandfather Joe Jackson doesn’t care that I pretended to growl at Darth Maul in the mirror using lyrics from “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.” He claims the videos weren’t meant to be posted at all, adding he plans to track down the goons who hacked the private footage. Call me crazy, but there’s a chance the smooth criminal here is the grade-schooler operating the camera.
