A man covered in white face paint and donning a curly red wig, ruffled collar, giant round nose and giant eyebrows is causing quite a stir in the British town of Northampton. Yes, a clown is stalking the streets like Pennywise from Stephen King’s It . The creepy figure first appeared on Friday, September 13, with residents posting sightings of him on Twitter and no one quite sure what the heck is going on. Clown Terrorizes British Town The clown is simply standing on street corners and holding balloons and a teddy bear, waving at those who pass by and… okay, this is freaking us out just to write about. No wonder some have called the police. A Facebook page titled “Spot Northampton’s Clown” has been created and someone purporting to be the clown in question posted on it Monday, denying allegations that he’s been knocking on neighborhood doors late at night. “I ‘haven’t’ been knocking on houses and asking to paint window sills,” the individual wrote. “If what i am doing does get too much for people, I will have to stop.” The clown also says he is not part of any PR stunt. In response, a superhero dubbed The Clown Catcher and dressed like Superman has also taken to the streets in an attempt to protect citizens from the mysterious circus figure. Really. We’re not making any of this up. Watch the video above for more – and lock your doors tonight.
The weather’s finally getting warmer in New York after a long winter, and The Outdoor Co-Ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society is taking advantage. Yes … it’s a topless book club. As part of their mission to “make reading sexy” and remind New Yorkers that toplessness is somehow legal in the city, the women are doing their thing! This week, the group discussed recent works by Stephen King and Elissa Wald, as well as the merits of Dr. Who , Benedict Cumberbatch and Wallace Shawn. Moreover, they debated the definitions of “dialectic” and “apogee,” ate miniature cupcakes, and let their Vitamin D-starved bare skin soak up the sun. The OCETPFA, an organization who loves boobs and books, and thinks “pulp fiction pairs well with a bold, topless outing,” describes their mission as such: “We’re a group of friends, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends, and total strangers, who love good books and sunny days and enjoying both as nearly in the altogether as the law allows.” “Happily, New York City law allows toplessness by both men and women. So that’s the way we do our al fresco reading. If you’re in New York and the weather’s good, won’t you join us sometime?” Don’t mind if we do … are we right ladies? And guys? Just try not to ogle too hard, okay? Topless book club : Awesome Weird View Poll »
The first trailer for the remake of another classic horror film — Stephen King’s Carrie — is out, and it’s looking anemic compared to the bloody and blood-curdling promotional campaign that Evil Dead has waged over the last several months. Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce is certainly capable of bringing something original to this story, but, based on the trailer, I don’t see it. The only new twist I detect appears to be that Carrie’s traumatic first encounter with menstruation is going to end up on the Internet thanks to a cell-phone wielding mean girl in the scene. The rest of the action in this clip appears to copy the plot of Brian De Palma’s original 1976 adaptation without upping the fright factor. There’s another factor to consider that a reader raised the last time I wrote about this movie : Even beneath a an awful haircut, Carrie star Chloe Grace Moretz’s beauty shines through, which makes it difficult to believe that she could be a weird pariah in high school. Any Day Now writer-director Travis Fine came across the story that would be his next film from a script that sat on the desk of original writer George Arthur Bloom and adapted it and tapped Alan Cumming to star in the story about a gay couple in the late ’70s who fight a discriminatory legal system to formally adopt a special needs teen who has been in their care. The feature, which opens Friday through Music Box Films, has won audience prizes at festivals throughout the year, including Tribeca where it debuted last Spring, to Provincetown, Chicago, Woodstock, Seattle and Outfest. Inspired by a true story and touching on legal and social issues that are more relevant now than ever, Any Day Now tells a story of love, acceptance, and creating your own family. In the late 1970s, when Marco (Isaac Leyva), a teenager with down syndrome who’s been abandoned by his mother, is taken in by committed couple Rudy (Alan Cumming) and Paul (Garret Dillahunt), he finds in them the family he’s never had. However, when their unconventional living arrangement is discovered by the authorities, Rudy and Paul must fight a biased legal system to adopt the child they have come to love as their own. Co-starring Frances Fisher, Gregg Henry and Chris Mulkey, Music Box Films will open the film in select theaters across the country on December 14.

This is not your mother’s Noah. A first look at actor Russell Crowe as the grizzled title character in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah has surfaced, and it’s not what you’d expect. As Movies.com reports , Crowe: “looks like a Mad Max out of the depths of time” and lives in a hostile world where “pity has no place.” Aronofsky’s film — which has an expected 2014 release date — does seem to jibe with the Biblical tale of Noah and his famous ark on one key point. According to Movies.com: Noah “is subject to visions which announce the imminent end of the earth,” which will be devastated by “the waves of an endless deluge.” Fan boys take note: Judging from the graphic novel series, Noah, For The Cruelty of Men , that Aronofsky created with executive producer Ari Handel and artist Niko Henrichon to help sell the film, Crowe’s character will be doing battle with some monstrous creatures. Hitfix writer Drew McWeeny reports that Noah’s opponents will include “Watchers,” 11-foot fallen angels have no wings but six arms. McWeeny also revealed that Anthony Hopkins has been cast as Noah’s 900-year-old father Methuselah and that Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone and Logan Leman will co-star. George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic will provide the CGI movie magic. “This isn’t a historical period piece,” Movies.com writes. “Noah’s is a story that exists outside of what we know to be, which sounds almost like a Stephen King/ The Dark Tower , ‘the world has moved on’ type post-apocalyptic scenario. It may not even be Earthly, it’s all just a vehicle for the Noah metaphor”. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.
