Nora Ephron Didn’t Feel Limited By Romantic Comedies

‘I’m not complaining about any box that I’m in, because I can write whatever I want,’ late writer/director tells MTV News in 2009. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nora Ephron in 2009 Photo: No matter how it happens, when or where, it is always sad to hear of the passing of a celebrated, talented and respected public figure like Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director and playwright Nora Ephron, who died of pneumonia at age 71 on Tuesday (June 26). Ephron is best known for writing and/or directing some of Hollywood’s most famous and successful romantic comedies like “When Harry Met Sally … ,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail.” Her final film as writer and director was 2009’s “Julie & Julia,” and during the promotion for that film, which starred Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, Ephron revealed to MTV News that although she was happy to be known for her romantic comedies, she also dabbled in a few politically charged subjects that had yet to be made into feature films. “You should see my closet, it’s full of political scripts,” Ephron revealed, adding that while she’d love to see one of her many political scripts turned into a film, she wasn’t holding out hope that Hollywood would let her take a turn from romantic comedies to political dramedies. “Forget it,” Ephron said of wanting to direct one of her political scripts. “I mean yes, but the [movies] you get made are not necessarily all the things you write.” When asked if she felt at all limited by being most well-known for her expertise in the rom-com genre, Ephron said she felt nothing but gratitude for how much her successful romantic comedies have done in providing her with the freedom to explore other unrelated subjects. “I’m not complaining about any box that I’m in, because I can write whatever I want,” Ephron said with sincerity. “Fortunately, I’m not just in the movie business, so I don’t feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make.” Share your condolences for Ephron’s family and friends in the comments below. B.o.B, Taylor Swift Salute Everyman In ‘Both Of Us’ Video

Pair examine everyday life in Nashville in new Jake Nava-directed video. By Jocelyn Vena B.o.B in his video for “Both of Us” Photo: If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if B.o.B and Taylor Swift hung out together in Nashville and hired video director Jake Nava to film it, well, wonder no more. The twosome are committing their song collaboration to celluloid in the just-released clip for the rapper’s track “Both of Us,” which features the country-pop superstar on the hook. But if you thought the video would pay homage to the glittering honky-tonks of Nashville, think again. This video instead sheds light on the grittier sides of the country music capital, following the lyrics of the track, which center on adversity and strife. Bobby Ray and Taylor are rarely seen in the same shot, as southern Americana is the twosome’s most prominent co-star. The clip opens with B.o.B hanging out in his modest home, while Swift is chilling out in the most un-Taylor Swift spot in music video history, a pool hall. There are shots of tatted locals, cowboy-boot-wearing young women, shirtless youths playing in sprinklers, teens kissing, a mobile home, and a dog that leaves Taylor awestruck with his high-flying antics. The video isn’t glamorous, but it leaves viewers appreciating the little things in life. It’s not about money, it’s about understanding that sometimes a romp through a sprinkler or a good game of billiards is enough to take you away from the mundane moments of everyday life. As the video closes out, viewers are left with a sort of fantasy, with B.o.B and Swift re-imagined as the everyman and everywoman living simple lives in rural Tennessee, much like the folks in the video. It’s like B.o.B says in the song: “Hey, but if it’s all for one and one for all/ Then maybe one day we all could ball/ Do it one time for the underdogs/ From Bobby Ray to all of y’all.” Swift shares in the sentiment when she answers on the chorus, “I wish I was strong enough to lift not one but both of us/ Someday I will be strong enough to lift not one but both of us.” The track is off B.o.B’s album Strange Clouds . Swift and the MC shot the clip in Music City, USA in mid-June, weeks prior to the official release. Related Photos Taylor Swift And B.o.B On The Set Of Their ‘Both Of Us’ Video

B.o.B And Prodigy To Hold Down ‘RapFix Live’

Plus, log on to MTV.com Wednesday at 4 p.m. to get an exclusive look at the latest videos from DJ Khaled and Nas. By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: MTV News You may want to grab an umbrella for this week’s “RapFix Live,” because there will be some strange clouds in the forecast when B.o.B hits MTV News’ weekly hip-hop talk show. On Tuesday (May 1), Bobby Ray released his sophomore LP, Strange Clouds, and on Wednesday, he will appear on “RFL” to talk about his journey thus far. “This next album is like a culmination of everything combined, and I feel like that’s really why I’m so excited about it and eager to put it out because I’m just ready to get back on the court with it,” B.o.B told MTV News of his second album months before it dropped. It was the Lil Wayne-assisted title track that served as the first single from Strange Clouds, but before he released his Adventures of Bobby Ray follow-up, Bob dropped another single, the sing-songy “So Good.” The catchy love song has already cracked the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album, which was released on T.I.’s Grand Hustle record label, features not only Tip, but also Chris Brown, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj. Bobby Ray isn’t the only rap star who will be holding court on “RapFix” this week: Mobb Deep ‘s Prodigy will be making his way to the red couch to give Sway the latest Mobb updates and to debut his brand-new single live on the show. Things got a little rocky for Mobb Deep after reports of a rift between the group surfaced thanks to some pretty harsh tweets sent from Havoc’s account. All the drama has since been cleared up; the troubling tweets were sent after Hav lost his phone at a gas station and a prankster gained access to his social-networking passwords. Rather than run from the drama, Prodigy said he plans to use the negative publicity to his advantage. So, with a new project in the works, the H.N.I.C. is ready to take the next step in his infamous career. If that isn’t enough, host Sway will take you behind the scenes on two major hip-hop videos. First, we have an exclusive sneak peek of DJ Khaled ‘s “Take It to the Head” video featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. Then we will also roll out clips detailing the making of Nas’ latest video “The Don.” You’re not going to want to miss this. Catch B.o.B, Prodigy and DJ Khaled on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Swizz Beatz, A$AP Rocky ‘Make History’ On ‘Street Knock’

Allen Iverson joins duo for first video from Swizz’s upcoming Limitless mixtape, featuring Nas, Rick Ross, DMX and the Lox. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Swizz Beatz on the set of “Street Knock” Photo: MTV News Swizz Beatz is getting some assistance from newcomer A$AP Rocky on “Street Knock,” the first single from his upcoming Limitless mixtape. The super producer and Harlem’s pretty boy invited MTV News to the music video set of the bouncy AraabMuzik-produced number in New York City. “Right now, I’m here at the shoot with the homey Swizz, about to make history,” Rocky shared. The two were joined by basketball veteran Allen Iverson, who showed off his crossover skills in one of the scenes. “Music is a form of expression,” Swizz said. “I just love to be here and being able to share that expression with the world.” Slated for debut later this year, Limitless is set to include a slew of additional features including Rick Ross, Nas, DMX and the Lox. “When the Rick Ross mixtape [ Rich Forever ] came out, that inspired me to do a mixtape, because sometimes people need to get back into the element of what you do, since they see you doing so many different ventures,” Swizz explained to MTV News in early March. “People have to know that you can take it back to the basics and keep it hip-hop and keep it fun and just do what made you the person that you are,” he continued. “That’s why I think this mixtape is important. I’m vibing with Nas on it, Rick Ross, DMX, the Lox — people that everybody asks, ‘Man, when are you guys gonna do a track together?’ and ‘When is this happening?’ I thought the mixtape was a great way to bring that to life.” Many fans were expecting the “On to the Next One” producer’s next musical project to be the LP Haute Living , but Swizz is opting for perfection over expediency. “I know that everybody was looking for a whole album,” he added. “But I’m a perfectionist, and I felt like I just wanted to put some more finishing touches on it and figured I don’t have to rush anything.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Gets A New Point Of View Related Artists Swizz Beatz A$AP Rocky

Taylor Swift’s Road To Rap: T-Swizzle To B.o.B’s ‘Both Of Us’

MTV News takes a look at Swift’s hip-hop history, leading up to her track with the Strange Clouds rapper. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Getty Images Taylor Swift — or T-Swizzle, as she’s known in rap circles — has been working her way toward a legitimate appearance on a hip-hop track for some time now. After welcoming many an MC onstage during her Speak Now Tour, the singer now guests on B.o.B’s Strange Clouds track “Both of Us.” The Dr. Luke-produced song blends the unlikely duo’s musical genres, with jangly guitars that pay homage to Swift’s country roots and synthy beats that have Bobby Ray’s hip-hop flavor. Surprisingly, the duet came about at the insistence of the singer. B.o.B recently explained that “she came to Atlanta and she hit up Grand Hustle. I wasn’t there. Tip was there and I eventually linked with her in Dallas and the rest is history.” This is not the first time the twosome have appeared on a song together. Last year, during Swift’s tour, B.o.B took the stage to perform “Airplanes” with the star. Swift took over chorus duties from her pal (and Paramore leading lady) Hayley Williams. But we have to go back even further than that to really dive into T-Swizzle’s hip-hop history. In a 2008 MTV News interview, the singer opened up about one day wanting to work with rappers . “I’d like to do a completely off-the-wall collaboration,” she said. “I would like one of my songs to be the hook to a rap song. That would be so much fun! You know, I love Kanye West and I love T.I. — he’s amazing.” The following year, at the 2009 CMT Awards , she hooked up with T-Pain to parody her good-girl image in the song “Thug Life.” She showed not only her gangster side, but also her funny bone, rapping lyrics like, “You can find me making cookies at night/ You out clubbing? I just made caramel delights.” Taking some time off from her rap game for a minute, in 2011 she enlisted the likes of Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida , and, yes, T.I. to put her stamp on some of their biggest hits during the Speak Now Tour . Initially, it surprised Tip that the country cutie would want to have him appear onstage with her last October. T.I. explained, “I was confused, because I know it’s a phenomenal opportunity, but being T.I. — the Rubberband Man — and Taylor Swift being America’s Sweetheart, I had just gotten out of prison like two days [earlier] and all of a sudden my phone rings.” Eventually, though, she was welcomed with open arms into his crew. “Taylor’s extended Hustle gang. She a part of the crew,” T.I. said in March. “She just ain’t got her dog tags yet, but she’s a part of the crew, though.” In the midst of the tour, Swift talked about asking rappers to perform with her. “I’m a huge hip-hop fan,” she shared. “And it’s been so amazing to have so many incredible artists come out and to get to sing the hooks on their songs that I’ve been blasting in my car for the last couple years.” Now, with so much practice singing other people’s hooks behind her, it seems like the right time for her to get her own. On the B.o.B track, she sings, “I wish I was strong enough to lift not one, but both of us/ Someday, I will be strong enough to lift not one but both of us.” The lines mirror the song’s theme of battling hardships and strife. “Both of Us” will be featured on B.o.B’s May album release. ‘Workaholics’ Rep Hard For Sum 41, Best Coast In Musical March Madness

‘They’re gonna snap Bon Iver’s neck, they would crush Metallica,’ Kyle Newacheck says of Sum. Voting in round two is already under way! By James Montgomery The Workaholics Photo: MTV News MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament has moved on to the second round, leaving plenty of heavily favored bands by the wayside, in a smoking pile, dreams shattered ( MMM is nothing if not dramatic ). And so, with voting in all round-two matchups currently under way — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — we figured now was a perfect time to gauge the temperature of the tourney with the guys from Comedy Central’s “Workaholics.” After all, they know a thing or two about smoking (we can’t vouch for their dreams, however). Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! We caught up with stars Adam Devine , Blake Anderson, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck at their rather epic South by Southwest party, and perhaps it was due to the free-flowing beverages — or the cornholing — but, boy, were their predictions off base. In fact, of all the bands they picked, only three still remain in MMM. So while their dreams may not be shattered, their brackets definitely are. But still, you’ve got to give them credit for their enthusiasm … and their ability to throw a killer party. So here’s who the “Workaholics” have winning it all in Musical March Madness. “Maroon 5 for the win. Adam Levine, I’m going to fight you over our name. I’m Adam Devine, I get so many tweets every day like, ‘I love you on “The Voice,” ‘ ” Devine said. “Truthfully, [I’m going] Black Keys versus Jack White in the finals, Black Keys take the win. Sorry, Jack, go tanning or something, you’re freaking us all out.” “I’m going Bruce Springsteen versus Best Coast [in the finals], and Bruce just barely nudges her out,” Anderson added. “That’d be a great show. I’d see that show.” OK, so just in case you haven’t been paying attention, Maroon 5, the Black Keys and Bruce all lost in the first round. Best Coast are still kicking, of course, but right now, they’re locked in a tight battle with “American Idol” fave James Durbin, who shocked the world by knocking off #1 seed the Foo Fighters in round one. So, Bethany, it’s time to rally the troops — a spot in the Sweet 16 is at stake. And while Devine and Anderson may have swung and missed in their picks, the same can’t be said about Newachek, who’s repping hard for dark-horse candidates Sum 41, who rolled all the way to the Elite Eight last year, and appear poised for another deep run this year. Having already taken down #2 Bon Iver, they currently lead #7 Metallica by a slight margin. “I’m going Sum 41 all the way. They’re gonna snap Bon Iver’s neck, they would crush Metallica,” Newachek said. “Sum 41, keep it rocking.” “I used to look like that kid, the bass player,” Holm added. “You know [as a] thinner young man.” MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out. B.o.B Challenges Alter Ego Bobby Ray On Strange Clouds Single

On ‘Where Are You,’ B.o.B laments the effects of fame on his personality and relationships. By Rob Markman B.o.B’s Strange Clouds Photo: Atlantic Fame sure has a way of changing people, and on his new single, Bobby Ray and his alter ego B.o.B duke it out for four-and-a-half minutes. “Where Are You (B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray)” opens with a lush piano melody, which builds and gives way into spacey synth sounds, a doo-wop-inspired background melody and a pounding bass drum. With the beat in full swing, B.o.B wastes no time confronting his issues when he raps, “Whatever happened to Bobby Ray? He used to be here for us/ Then he got famous and left all his fans in the dust.” B.o.B continues to rhyme in third person, lamenting on the changes that fame brings. World tours and taxing studio sessions have clearly affected Bob’s relationship with his family and his fans, whom he now seems distant from. “I never thought you would sell out, you’re becoming so cocky/ I asked you for a picture after your show, you walked right by me,” he raps before referencing fan-favorite songs like “Cloud 9” and “Generation Lost.” The internal conflict that B.o.B presents is similar to the one that his Grand Hustle CEO T.I. rapped about on his 2003 cut “T.I. vs. T.I.P.” T.I.’s track, however, centers on the tumultuous street life he once lived before his rise as a rap star. Sonically, B.o.B’s selection, which will appear on his upcoming May 1 album, Strange Clouds, comes off as an endearing self-reflection. Ultimately it proves that the rap star can’t be too far gone if he realizes where he has gone wrong. The song release comes just a day after Bob’s label revealed the cover art for his Strange Clouds LP. The album art shows Bobby Ray in a chic peacoat holding his temples while standing under a hovering cloud. Then, to drum up even more excitement, Warner Music Group will be premiering the video for B.o.B’s “So Good” single Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET. What do you think of “Where Are You (B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray)”? Justin Bieber Has ‘It,’ Mark Wahlberg Says

‘I’m pretty intuitive,’ actor tells MTV News about why he wanted to work with the pop star on an upcoming basketball-themed drama. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mark Wahlberg Photo: MTV News Mark Wahlberg surprised movie fans everywhere when he announced plans to hook up with Justin Bieber on the big screen. But when MTV News caught up with the “Contraband” star recently, he explained why he wanted to work with the teen phenom on the basketball-themed drama. “Intuition. I’m pretty intuitive,” he said of why he thinks shooting a film with the pop star is the right choice. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.” Of course, if it doesn’t come easily to the rookie actor, Wahlberg has a backup plan: “It’s there — and if not, I will extract it.” When MTV News caught up with Wahlberg and Bieber earlier this year at the MTV Movie Awards, they opened up a bit more about the in-the-works flick. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of, like, ‘The Color of Money,’ ” Wahlberg said of his “old guy” role. “So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ” Bieber, who previously appeared on the big screen in his 3-D concert flick “Never Say Never,” said he hopes to be on a film set by sometime next summer. And while he kept his plans hush-hush, he added that his team is “working on the script.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . B.o.B, Andre 3000 ‘Play The Guitar’ On New Single

Track samples classic Bob Marley and T.I.’s verse on Drake’s ‘Fancy.’ By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: Getty Images Since B.o.B ‘s early mixtape days, the Atlanta hitmaker drew comparisons to another ATLien. With his out-of-this-world production and rap style, Bobby Ray was at times considered a new age Andre 3000 , and on the axe-wielding Bob’s latest single, “Play the Guitar,” fans finally get to hear the two together. Beginning with a bluesy guitar riff and samples based on Bob Marley’s 1973 classic “I Shot the Sheriff” and T.I.’s verse on Drake’s “Fancy,” the Salaam Remi-produced track finds B.o.B and Three Stacks flexing their rap muscles. The song, which is the next single off of Bobby Ray’s upcoming Strange Clouds LP, was released Tuesday (December 27) on iTunes. The song’s hook is built around scratched-in T.I. vocals. “B.o.B plays the guitar” is brought in and out to set up Bob’s opening verse. “Well it’s B.o.B, flyer than a stewardess/ Fresh to death like I’m dressed for a eulogy,” he raps for starters. The “Nothing on You” MC then continues to showcase his tightly packed rap flow, reminding fans of his lyrical prowess. Rhyming alongside the highly regarded OutKast great had to provide some sort of inspiration for the youngster, and 3000 didn’t disappoint. At the top of his verse, Dre begins spitting about standing atop a Church’s Chicken restaurant playing a guitar, while B.o.B stands on the roof of an adjacent Dunkin’ Donuts. Yes, it is a strange way to set off a rap verse, but it’s fitting for an MC who prides himself on individuality. Andre continues his free-wheeling rhyme, spitting about everything from the advice his grandmother has given him to an Internet rumor that he plays the violin. In the end, Three Stacks leaves something for the next generation of musicians, spitting, “I encourage any child to pick up some instrument.” Just like B.o.B.
