Katy Perry’s 9 Most Irritating Faces Made in Her New Sesame Street Appearance

Perhaps it’s just the bitter end of a long, crushing day, or possibly the unshakable gloom of my post-Blankenship hangover , but Katy Perry on Sesame Street is just about the last thing my brain is prepared to reckon with this evening. But there it is — rather, there she is, all cleavage and cloy, bubble-gum grill, stalking around in pursuit of Elmo. There’s something curiously bothersome about this, and not necessarily that Perry went tweeting F-bombs just days ago when her fiancé punched out photographers. It’s probably best spoken in screencaps:

UNION: MSNBC Calls for Fashion Industry ‘Norma Rae’

MSNBC is very upset about one “highly-unregulated industry” and its “questionable and even abusive” working conditions. What industry? Coal mining or perhaps sewage treatment? No. Keli Goff, an author and political analyst who has a “Daily Rant” on MSNBC’s “Dylan Ratigan Show,” was complaining about the working conditions of models. That’s right, models. The people paid to walk down runways in designer clothing and be photographed for magazines and advertisements that as Goff put it, essentially are “paid for being beautiful.” Every industry has its own problems and accidents, but is the modeling industry really a “human rights” issue as MSNBC would have its viewers believe? Goff detailed “disturbing” complaints from models and promoted regulation and unionization of the industry. She even called for a “home-grown supermodel” to become the “Norma Rae of the fashion industry.” “Union! As Norma Rae said,” Goff declared. Norma Rae was a movie starring Sallie Field about a minimum-wage cotton mill worker, based on the life of an actual textile worker who battled to unionize her mill. But some of the conditions Goff mentioned cannot compare to the tough working conditions of many other industries. She complained about the lack of health insurance and worker’s comp for a model that had been burned by a photographers’ bulb, but didn’t mention whether or not the model could afford her own health care. According to San Diego Model Management, in most markets models make an hourly rate of $150 and usually have minimum number of hours (3-4) for print modeling. In bigger markets like New York City ” it’s not unusual for a model to make 5 or 6 thousand a day ,” the company’s website states. True, there are agency fees but the models definitely aren’t exactly scraping by on minimum wage. But it was the obsession with too thin models that really upset Goff and prompted her call for regulation of the U.S. fashion industry. “After being discovered walking down the street, [Gerren] Taylor walked in her first fashion show at the age of 12 and was strutting for high profile designers like Tommy Hilfiger by age 13. Her career however was over by age 14, having been told she’d become ‘too obese’ for runways. Taylor’s measurements: Six feet tall and a size 4,” Goff said. Goff continued: “Taylor’s story reinforces a reason the fashion industry needs regulation. Fashion’s developed a sick obsession with looking sickly thin in recent years.” Certainly, many designers are obsessed with thin but that problem shouldn’t be solved by regulation. Designers are in a business, and they sell a product. So if their product, in this case clothing promoted by very thin women, won’t sell, then they’ll have to change or lose business. Despite Goff’s support for Madrid and London regulations about size and age of models, the U.S. government should not be in the business of telling designers what size models they can hire to show off their clothing lines. Additionally, Goff cited concern about the fact that many models work long before they turn 18, but she didn’t mention anything in her “rant” about parental responsibility or involvement. It wasn’t until Dylan Ratigan asked about parents in his final question that she said they have often “relinquished” [control] and there isn’t much oversight “in the field.” Perhaps, Goff should have complained about the lack of parental involvement and called on models’ parents to be in control of protection their children instead of asking for the government to step in as nanny.

President Obama Picks Elizabeth Warren to Set Up Consumer Bureau

WASHINGTON — Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard law professor who became a darling of the left for her championship of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, was appointed by President Obama on Friday to oversee the agency’s establishment by mid-2011, until a director is named later. The appointment will allow Ms. Warren, “a janitor’s daughter,” as Mr. Obama called her in a Rose Garden introduction, to effectively get the agency up and running without having to go through a contentious confirmation battle in the Senate — a fight that a leading Democrat, Senator Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut, predicted she could not win given opposition from Republicans and the financial industry. Mr. Obama said Ms. Warren would recruit staff and initiate policies for regulating mortgages, student loans and other consumer credit products, and would have a voice in picking the first director. The favorite among administration officials is Michael S. Barr, an assistant secretary of Treasury for financial institutions who is an authority on financial regulation and on services for low and moderate-income households. The interim role for Ms. Warren averts a political problem for Mr. Obama in this election season. Rejecting her would have angered many party liberals, who already are demoralized by administration policies they view as too centrist and friendly to Wall Street. Liberal and consumer groups had lobbied hard for her, along with some lawmakers including Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. “This is the boldest step Obama’s taken so far to rein in the big Wall Street banks,” the leaders of the group MoveOn.org, who often are critical of the president, wrote in an e-mail to members. Business groups, while disappointed, privately acknowledged relief that Ms. Warren appeared unlikely to become director. The creation of the bureau was a central piece of the legislation overhauling the financial regulatory system that Mr. Dodd sponsored and Mr. Obama signed into law in July. Its genesis was an article that Ms. Warren wrote a year before the near collapse of the financial system in 2008, a crisis blamed in part on abusive mortgage practices. added by: BRAVATRAVELS

Mary J. Blige Says New Album Will Sound Like ‘My Life 2011’

The soul singer returns to her roots on latest effort. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Mary J. Blige Photo: MTV News Mary J. Blige has switched it up in recent years, collaborating with hot young voices like Drake and Trey Songz and even trying her hand at rapping . The nine-time Grammy winner has pretty much conquered the R&B game, so it’s fitting that her next effort will take listeners back to some of the classic Mary sounds that started it all. “Swizz [Beatz] and I, [we’re] in the studio cooking up something real nice,” Blige told MTV News backstage at the VMAs. The songbird, who hit the stage on Sunday with Swizzy and Drizzy for “Fancy,” revealed that she and the super-producer are crafting sonic heat similar to her first two studio albums but plan to update the vintage Blige sound. “[It will be] more like [ What’s the 411? ], My Life 2011, ’12. It’s headed [in] that direction but in a new [way]. Not what it used to be.” Blige dished that the follow-up to 2009’s Stronger With Each Tear may come with some club joints but didn’t promise any of the house-music-inspired rhythms that have popped up in hits like “OMG” and “Closer” from fellow R&B vets Usher and Ne-Yo. “Right now, it’s going in the Mary direction, which is R&B and hip-hop and soul,” Blige said. “If it goes into the club direction, it will probably be more soulful than futuristic.” Blige has time to decide whether some speaker-rattling joints will make her next album as she’s set to kick off another major undertaking before her upcoming LP drops. The songstress will rock a headlining tour this fall and has recruited budding soul stars Jazmine Sullivan and Miguel for the trek, which kicks off October 2 in Mobile, Alabama. R&B vet El DeBarge is slated to appear on certain dates. Are you looking forward to Mary’s new music? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Mary J. Blige

Marilyn Manson Wants To Play Stevie On ‘Eastbound and Down’

‘That would be perfect,’ Manson says at the second-season premiere of his favorite show. By Kara Warner Marilyn Manson Photo: MTV News So what do a foulmouthed, washed-up Major Leaguer and a slightly macabre, menacing rocker have in common? Nothing, really. And yet, when admitted “Eastbound and Down” superfan Marilyn Manson strolled down the Astroturf-lined green carpet at HBO’s premiere for the show’s second season Thursday, he seemed right at home. When MTV News caught up with the “Beautiful People” singer, we asked him to deliver a few of his favorite Kenny Powers quotes. “It would be really hard to pick because there are so many,” Manson said. “I would say maybe my favorite … ‘With every set of tits comes a gaping hole of need that even Kenny Powers can fill.’ That might be my favorite. Just basic. Or, ‘Can I do you from behind with a “Scream” mask? The mask from “Scream.” Because I did that, personally, myself,” Manson admitted or joked, we couldn’t quite tell. Regarding a possible Manson cameo on the show, the rocker said he just wants to play the role of Powers’ awkward sidekick Stevie Janowski (played by actor Steve Little). “My cameo would be playing … Stevie Janowski, that would be perfect.” We suggested he could potentially play his brother. “No, just playing him. I want to play him,” Manson insisted. “That’s it. It’s a challenge. I can do whatever I want. Don’t tell me what to do,” he said with a slight smile, ending the conversation with another patented Powers quote. Manson’s “Eastbound and Down” obsession was recently revealed in a story featured in Interview magazine . “Whenever I see Manson, he’s repeating entire chunks of dialogue and dressed like Kenny,” Adam Bhala Lough, who is directing Manson in the movie “Splatter Sisters,” revealed. “He just walks around dressed like this and f—s with people on the street. If a waiter or valet tells him, ‘Have a nice day,’ he’ll respond, ‘Don’t tell me what to do.’ Stuff like that. He’s even dressed like this when I’m at his house watching B

Randi Rhodes Crudely Mocks Christine O’Donnell’s Prim Sexuality: ‘Hymen Check!’

Liberal talk radio host Randi Rhodes rejoiced on Wednesday over victorious Tea Party candidates Carl Palladino (“a seriously creepy, creepy guy”) and Christine O’Donnell (“you’ve got the anti-masturbation paranoid creationist lawyer where we could pick up a seat”). But Rhodes decided to go scabrously nasty and personal against O’Donnell, complete with flagrant virginity mockery:   By the way, Christine O’Donnell. It comes to my attention, uh, Deb tells me that Christine O’Donnell is not married….she’s an unmarried woman. Hymen check! [plays popping noise] She’d better be a virgin! Right? With all this vitriol about sex and sexual thoughts and lust and not masturbating and it’s wrong and what am I doing in the room… I know she had a boyfriend. I know she did because her then-boyfriend — then campaign manager — purchased her house when her house was in foreclosure for her! Uh, do you think he did it with lust in his heart? Uh, I don’t know what his motivation was to overpay for the house. But he overpaid by about $35,000 to get campaign manager, who is buying her house today – so, I would like to, you know, make sure she says who she says she is, and that the package of what you are buying is undamaged! Sounds kind of fundamentalist Islamic, doesn’t it? It’s probably too much to expect this will cost Rhodes the kind of trouble she received for denouncing Hillary Clinton as a “big f—ing whore.” That outburst cost her the Air America gig, before it sunk. Would Rhodes appreciate what an opposition-research team could report on her personal life? Like many liberals, Rhodes rejoiced in the disapproval of Karl Rove, and then she turned around and mocked how Rove helped get that “draft-dodging drunk ex-coke freak” George W. Bush elected president twice: Karl Rove does not like Christine O’Donnell; I don’t know what the deal is. I’m not sure why this uh would be; but he really hates her. I mean, he’s on the air giving everybody everything what they need to actually say congratulations to uh you know Senator Chris uh, uh, uh — I just blanked out on his name. Chris — Coons! Seriously, I mean, Senator Coons, you know, is a gimme now because the Republicans are eating their own! And uh, frankly, Karl Rove is leading the charge. She wasn’t counting on the establishment in the general election for sure; but I mean, the way things are going, you can’t count anybody. You know, it’s going to be like a blowout. They don’t feel that she is fit for office. Karl Rove doesn’t feel she is fit! Remember,  Karl Rove got a draft-dodging drunk ex-coke freak who couldn’t put a sentence together with a flashlight and two hands on a sunny day with a map. Couldn’t figure out Iraq was not Saudi Arabia, OK? He got him elected twice! Rhodes dismissed all the conservative Republican women running for office as Palinesque opportunists who were only interested in cashing in: They are all little Sarah Palin wanna-bes. They’re all opportunists. None of them have character, or sincerity, or truthfulness. None of them have the kind of fortitude to stand up against the lobbyists . They’re going to go in there and they are and make millions of dollars! And some of them will go in there and be one-termers and embarrass their party. But then they’ll go over to K Street and they’re set for life! Set for life! These women are opportunists; and the only reason they are being embraced by factions of America, which doesn’t like Americans, is because people are frustrated. And the only thing that the Republican Party and the Tea Party has offered is the acknowledgement that you are frustrated.

Kevin James To Star In Mixed Martial Arts Film

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ star will play a physics teacher moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. By Adam Rosenberg Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Mall cop Paul Blart, better known as Kevin James , is trading in his security uniform for boxing trunks. The actor is all set to go another round with Sony — after “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Grown-Ups” and 2011’s “The Zookeeper” — for a mixed martial arts movie. James will star in the as-yet-untitled feature as a physics teacher who decides to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter when the school he works for faces budget cuts, Deadline reports. Whatever his initial intentions are, the main character proves talented enough to land a gig as a fighter in the UFC. Sony is reportedly fast-tracking the film to shoot next year, presumably for a 2012 release. James will also produce with Todd Garner (“Blart” and “Knight and Day”), and the script comes from Allan Loeb (“The Switch”). The actor also has a role in another Loeb-scripted comedy, early 2011 release “The Dilemma,” directed by Ron Howard and starring Vince Vaughn, Winona Ryder and Channing Tatum alongside James. “The Zookeeper” opens next summer, starring James as the titular caretaker, an overweight, lonely guy who decides to get out into the world and meet someone. Seeing this, the animals at the zoo he so loves reveal their great secret — they can talk — and, in doing so, teach their friend how to get his groove on. Rosario Dawson stars as the live-action female lead. The film also features the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow, Cher and others. Loeb has been busy promoting a pair of 2010 releases that he scripted, the Jason Bateman/Jennifer Aniston-starring rom-com “The Switch” (which he also produced) and the soon-to-be-released long-awaited sequel “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” In addition to “The Dilemma,” Loeb also worked or is working on the upcoming Sandler/Aniston comedy “Just Go With It,” actioner “Protection” and high-profile reboot/remake “Escape From New York.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
