Backtrack BLVD: Bert And Ernie Confirmed Gay By Writer, Sesame Street Immediately Refutes

Image via Revierfoto/picture alliance via Getty Images Bert And Ernie Confirmed As Gay Couple Welp, you can stop the conspiracy theories . It’s official. According to TMZ , old school Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman recently revealed to Queerty that beloved Sesame Street couple, Bert and Ernie, are indeed a couple! Saltzman began writing for the show in 1984, several years after its 1969 inception. But he says that it wasn’t about pushing a “gay agenda”, he wrote the characters to reflect his own personal relationship. Ok, so we have to address—that’s the big question, right? In the writer’s room, you’re all adults. Were you thinking of Bert & Ernie as a gay couple? Did that question ever come up? I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked “are Bert & Ernie lovers?” And that, coming from a preschooler was fun. And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie & I as “Bert & Ernie.” Saltzman goes on to explain: So you’re saying that Bert & Ernie became analogs for your relationship in a lot of ways? Yeah. Because how else? That’s what I had in my life, a Bert & Ernie relationship. How could it not permeate? The things that would tick off Arnie would be the things that would tick off Bert. How could it not? I will say that I would never have said to the head writer, “oh, I’m writing this, this is my partner and me.” But those two, Snuffalupagus, because he’s the sort of clinically depressed Muppet…you had characters that appealed to a gay audience. And Snuffy, this depressed person nobody can see, that’s sort of Kafka! It’s sort of gay closeted too. There you have it ladies and gentlemen, and gender non-binary, and queer and all the other letters. Straight from the horses mouth. Congrats to the happy couple for finally being able to live their truth. Peep what Sesame Street had to say about this revelation on the next page…

Bert and Ernie: Yup, We’re Gay!

For Bert and Ernie, it really is a sunny day. At last, the clouds that have covered up their sexuality have been swept away and they can live a life of true freedom and personal expression. Because the long-held belief by most Sesame Street viewers has finally been confirmed… … Bert and Ernie are gay. Shocking, right? Totally stunning, no? Who ever would have thought such a thing about two males who sleep in the same room, play with the same rubber ducky and seemingly cannot go anywhere or do a single thing without having the other one around. In an interview with Queerty, writer Mark Saltzman said he has often drawn upon his own experiences when telling the televised stories of Bert and Ernie. A seven-time Emmy winner, Saltzman explains that he has always imagined the puppets as a “loving couple” and that he has based his take on them on his relationship with Arnold Glassman. “I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were [gay],” he says, adding in this interview; “I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie & I as ‘Bert & Ernie.'” Saltzman continued with this theme as follows: “Arnie as a film editor — if you thought of Bert with a job in the world, wouldn’t that be perfect? Bert with his paper clips and organization? And I was the jokester,” he said. “So it was the Bert and Ernie relationship, and I was already with Arnie when I came to Sesame Street. “So I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple. I wrote sketches … Arnie’s OCD would create friction with how chaotic I was. And that’s the Bert and Ernie dynamic.” For the record, Saltzman did not create these puppets. They made their debut on the children’s program in 1969 and Saltzman did not start writing for the series until 1985. Back in 2011, Sesame Street responded to the question of Bert and Ernie’s sexual orientation by shooting down chatter that they were hooking up . “Bert and Ernie are best friends,” Sesame Workshop said in a statement responding to a Change.org petition demanding the characters get married. It added seven years ago: “They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. “Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics, they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.” In June of 2013, however, The New Yorker used a photo of Bert and Ernie on its cover upon reporting that the Supreme Court had shot down a couple anti-gay marriage policies. So the topic of whether Bert and Ernie were getting it on has always been a question within pop culture. That question appears to have been answered now, leaving only two more Sesame Street-related inquiries to ponder: What gender is Big Bird? And why does Bert have one giant eyebrow, while Ernie has none?

In White Folks News: ‘Sesame Street’ Creators Sue Production Company Behind Melissa McCarthy’s New Movie

Mike Smith/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Melissa McCarthy’s New Film Sparks Lawsuit From Sesame Street Creators The creators of Sesame Street are suing the production company behind a new  Melissa McCarthy  comedy, that features “ejaculating puppets” which resemble the children’s show’s beloved characters, according to court docs. Sesame Workshop filed the suit claiming that the producers behind The Happytime Murders  are making a “deliberate attempt” to appropriate their brand in order to promote their film. The lawsuit reads: “Defendants’ widely-distributed marketing campaign features a just-released trailer with explicit, profane, drug-using, misogynistic, violent, copulating, and even ejaculating puppets, along with the tagline ‘NO SESAME. ALL STREET.” The comedy is set to be released in August, and is a murder mystery that revolves around puppets who exhibit raunchy, adult behavior. Sesame Workshop is alleging that the misuse of its brand infringes on its “intellectual property rights.” The company is imploring the movie to drop the “NO SESAME” slogan from their ads while seeking compensatory and punitive damages. A spokesman for the movie production company, STX, released a statement that proved the film is standing it’s ground. “STX loved the idea of working closely with Brian Henson and the Jim Henson Company to tell the untold story of the active lives of Henson puppets when they’re not performing in front of children,” read a statement attributed to a puppet character named Fred, Esq. It went on to say, “While we’re disappointed that Sesame Street does not share in the fun, we are confident in our legal position. We look forward to introducing adult moviegoers to our adorably unapologetic characters this summer.”

Leah Messer to Lose Custody of Kids While in Rehab?!

Currently, Leah Messer is in rehab undergoing treatment for a number of issues. Members of Leah’s family have insisted that the troubled Teen Mom star is not on drugs, and is instead suffering from severe emotional distress. Her mother has stated that Leah is in rehab for stress and depression , but others in her inner circle know otherwise, and Leah’s drug abuse was exposed in a recent preview for the new season of Teen Mom 2. Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t be worse for Leah, whose two baby daddies might begin an aggressive campaign to strip her of all her parental rights before she even leaves treatment. According to Radar Online, Jeremy Calvert has already hired a lawyer in hopes of winning sole custody of his daughter, and Corey Simms might follow suit. Jeremy’s plan was to swoop in once Leah went to rehab and get an emergency hearing,” says one insider. “Corey was considering it, too.” One insider says Calvert and Simms have been convinced by Leah’s family to put the custody battle on hold until after she’s completed rehab. Other sources say Calvert is going full-steam ahead.  Either way, Leah might be heading back to a rather stressful environment after her treatment is through.
