‘Great Gatsby’ Trailer: Five Roaring Scenes

Leonardo DiCaprio revisits his matinee-idol days and Baz Luhrmann recalls his previous work in sizzling new sneak peek. By Kara Warner Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Great Gatsby” Photo: Warner Bros. Anyone who doubted the cinematic treat director Baz Luhrmann will deliver this Christmas in the form of his “Great Gatsby” need only watch the first teaser trailer to have their curiosity decidedly piqued. The visually stunning two-and-a-half-minute trailer features stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in all their glamorous, early 20th-century-styled glory. Here are five key elements to look out for: Leonardo DiCaprio Reclaims Matinee-Idol Status There’s no doubt Leonardo DiCaprio is a gifted, serious actor; just look to his impressive and Oscar-nominated body of work for proof. And while his careful and calculated decisions with regard to his gritty and more art-house-oriented film roles over the years are indeed admirable, there’s part of his fanbase dying for him to get back to his matinee-idol roots,

Andrew Garfield Gives Biggest Spider-Man Interview Yet to… Tobey Maguire

Andrew Garfield has passed along comments and notes from his inaugural Spider-Man stint for a while now, but he’s saved his first truly in-depth press foray for a chat with the one guy on Earth who can literally relate to every word: Ex- Spider-Man franchise star Tobey Maguire. The conversation is featured in the new issue of VMan , with numerous highlights from cover boy Garfield confiding to Maguire about the absurdity of the casting process… “I’m friends with a few of the guys who were up for it, and I actually had dinner with Jamie [Bell] the night of my screen test and his screen test. We compared notes and war stories, and we kind of got past the ridiculousness of it all and thought it would be a nice idea to get everyone together and kind of interview each other about how messed up the process is, being against each other, and remember that we’re all in it together, knowing that when you take off that bodysuit someone else is going to be stepping into your sweat immediately after. It’s a weird kind of cattle call. But Marc [Webb] was great. He was very open and encouraging. You have the monitoring area with literally about 30 people judging you, looking at your face and whispering to each other—it’s one of the most disconcerting and kind of humiliating things to go through, if you’re aware of it.” …to Maguire singing his heir’s praises… “When it was coming together, I was particularly excited at two moments: one was when Marc Webb got involved. I think he’s an interesting and cool choice. And then I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker. When I heard it was you, I was literally like, fucking perfect! I just want it to be great, and I thought, what a great actor Andrew is, I’m glad that’s what’s happening here.” …to the true confession that we’d all been waiting for from Garfield: “I was 19 when I saw [ Spider-Man ]. I got a pirated DVD at Portobello Market with my friend Terry McGuiness, and we went back to my skanky apartment in North London and we watched it twice in a row and then practiced your final line in the mirror! Terry has this thick and every time I would recite that line he would laugh this very distinct laugh and say, ‘No, man, you could never be fucking Spider-Man. You’ll never be fucking Spider-Man!’ I was so humiliated and upset. But, um… fuck you, Terry!” Aw! Memories. Plenty more hits shelves May 17 in VMan . Orson Welles’s Oscar Would Make a Lovely Holiday Gift

What do you get for the cinephile who has everything? Start with a six-figure loan, I guess, and then check out the ongoing auction for “[t]he finest and most desirable item in Hollywood collecting — the original Oscar awarded to Orson Welles for best ‘Original Screenplay’ for Citizen Kane. This Oscar statue, awarded by The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is the very same statue presented to Orson Welles on 26 February 1942 at the Biltmore Hotel. [… F]or years it had gone missing and the Academy issued a replacement to Beatrice Welles, Orson’s youngest daughter and sole heir. The original had all along been in the possession of cinematographer Gary Graver, who tried to sell it in 1994.” [ Nate D. Sanders via THR ]

First Great Gatsby Images: Welcome to the East Egg Dinner Theater!

So Baz Luhrmann beats on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into 3-D. In the first photos from his splashy new The Great Gatsby adaptation, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton vamp it up like humorlessly obsessed guests at a murder mystery dinner party. Anybody else find the casting here a bit too pat and obvious? Leonardo DiCaprio is a… a moneyed and aloofly self-interested man! Tobey Maguire is… a nervous, kowtowing outsider! Carey Mulligan is… the new Mia Farrow again! Well. Check out the images for yourself and see if I’m too cynical.

Life of Pi Changes Release Date to Avoid The Hobbit

Since The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is now slated for a December 14 release, other studios’ movies are politely rescheduling to avoid that box office bonanza. Life of Pi , the Ang Lee adaptation of Yann Martel’s 2001 novel, starring newcomer Suraj Sharma, Tobey Maguire, and Gerard Depardieu, is now scheduled for a Dec. 21, 2011 premiere. It should be the greatest movie about being stuck in a boat with a Bengal Tiger since Hitchcock’s Lifeboat , where Tallulah Bankhead almost mauls all the other passengers. [ /Film ]
