REVIEW: Ambitious Waiting For Superman Tries to Make Sense of School-Lottery Issues

Two or three documentaries about the Unites States’ totally FUBAR education system ago, I recall a school administrator saying that he no longer attends the lotteries held to determine which children will get into the school of their choice, and which will be condemned to — horror of horrors — their local public school. His heart couldn’t take it anymore, he said.

Potential Oscar Nominee James Franco Gets ‘D’ in Acting Class

James Franco will be in the thick of the Oscar race this year thanks to his performance in 127 Hours , but that doesn’t mean everyone thinks he’s a good actor. At the premiere of Howl last night, Franco revealed he got a ‘D’ in a recent acting class at NYU, though he isn’t sure how that happened. “I did the work, I did well in everything else,” he told Roger Friedman . Maybe his teacher saw Flyboys . [ Showbiz411 ]

Sesame Workshop Cites ‘Parent,’ ‘Care-Giver’ Demos in Katy Perry Snafu

This just in: ” Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street , which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube.” Thank God, because the comments are hilarious . [ Sesame Workshop ]

Survivor Loser Review: Shameful Shannon

“Tribal Council” should just be renamed “Occasion to Mess Up.” I want Jeff Probst to sit with each week’s losing tribe and say, “Welcome to an occasion to mess up. Go.” Then the racist and homophobic and incendiary back-and-forth can begin. Last night the La Flor tribe decided to vote out its — hmmmm? — most idiotic contestant by a mile Shannon. God, what a huffy little jag. Let’s list his three biggest downfalls in yesterday’s episode of Survivor while cackling at his jag visage.

Jennifer Aniston’s Box Office Poison Infects TVs Too

Jennifer Aniston’s much-ballyhooed guest appearance on Cougar Town was similar to her recent string of theatrical releases: Disappointing. The season premiere of the Courteney Cox sitcom — which featured Aniston as a psychiatrist — drew in a little over 8 million viewers. That’s down from the 11 million people who tuned in to the series premiere last September, and also represents a significant drop from lead-in Modern Family , which was watched by 12.6 million viewers. Don’t worry, Jen: There’s always radio. [ Us ]

REVIEW: Howl Gives Allen Ginsberg’s Funky Genius the Collage Treatment

Filmmakers feel an understandable urge to rise to the occasion when committing the lives of ’60s saints and mold-busting mavericks like Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg to the screen. Dylan got Todd Haynes’s 2007 deconstruction of the biopic, I’m Not There (in which David Cross appears as Ginsburg in an indelible cameo). And now Ginsberg is the subject of Howl , a collagist treatment of his creation myth. Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman began their account of the conception of Ginsburg’s titular declamatory opus and the 1957 obscenity trial that followed its publication as a straight documentary. After roughing out the usual talking heads and archival footage, it became clear to the directors of The Times of Harvey Milk (Epstein only) and The Celluloid Closet that the best way to honor their subject was to get a little funky.
