News from MMC Headquarters

This just in: Our fearless leader, Jay Penske (CEO and Founder of MMC, which is Movieline’s parent company), has announced another massive deal today , one that means MMC is selling mail.com to Europe’s largest Internet company, Germany’s United Internet Group. No, this doesn’t mean that if you have a mail.com email account you’re going to need to start figuring out how to spell ‘send’ auf Deutsch. The mail.com accounts will just migrate over to United Internet’s souped up GMX system, and you’ll still have access to all the excellent MMC content you’ve become accustomed to reading every day. Sure, there will be some necessary rebranding of MMC in the coming weeks, but other than that, little will change for you, our dear Movieline readers. Except maybe Movieline.de to bookmark in the near future.

SNL Hater Kanye West Heads to SNL

This could be awkward. Professional Twitterer Kanye West will appear on the Bryan Cranston-hosted episode Saturday Night Live as musical guest, which wouldn’t be a problem if his single “Power,” didn’t put the entire program on full blast . “F*** SNL and the whole cast,” Kanye raps on the song. “Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass.” Well, then. Meanwhile, I’m just crestfallen that yet another “surprise” about the new season of Saturday Night Live has been spoiled . [ Futon Critic ]

‘Jesus, What a Mess’: Mad Men Recapped

Every season of Mad Men has its defining WTF moment. Take Betty’s pellet-gun prowess in season one, or Freddy Rumsen’s pants-peeing in season two, or last season’s Great Lawnmower Foot Severing of 1963. The series wouldn’t be the same without these breathtaking, pitch-black detours into Mathew Weiner’s id (for better or worse), and the current season of the series wouldn’t be the same without its frequent journeys to that well for dramatic reckoning, comic relief and/or the sheer exhilaration of point-blank, old-fashioned shock. And if this year we’ve indeed seen both the best and the worst of what Mad Men has to offer, then it only fits that we have finally seen its weirdest. But was it worth it?

Lindsay Lohan Admits She Failed A Drug Test And Other Yom Kippur Miracles

Perhaps jail time and rehab really did change Lindsay Lohan. After coming up positive for drug use in her court-mandated drug test, I think we were all girded for the usual litany of excuses — not my pants, not my drugs, I drink a lot of kombucha , I accuse my parents , and so on. But, mirable dictu , Lindsay’s taken full responsibility. And that’s not all!

REVIEW: Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Jack Goes Boating Is Well-Crafted But Still Waterlogged

Jack Goes Boating, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s first time out directing a feature film, is such a gentle picture that at times it threatens to drift off the screen. Hoffman plays Jack, a going-nowhere, reggae-loving New York limo driver who appears never to have had a girlfriend. His closest friends, married couple Clyde (John Ortiz) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega), decide to set him up with one of Lucy’s new co-workers, Connie (Amy Ryan) — she works phone sales for a slick funeral director-bereavement guru, though she’s so awkward and tentative in this new gig that she’s in danger of losing it.

On DVD: The Outrageous, Spacey-Less Version of Casino Jack

As hot political documentaries go, Alex Gibney’s Casino Jack and the United States of Money (not to be confused with George Hickenlooper’s competitive, Kevin Spacey-starring Casino Jack ) is a lively, action-packed affair, chronicling the career of famed lobbyist Jack Abramoff from hot shot conservative shaker to D.C. megamind and profiteer to a Congressionally excoriated convict and poster boy for economic megalomania. Gibney, a prolific busybody who’s made films about Enron, war-on-terror torture practices and Hunter S. Thompson, keeps the movie light and zesty and evidentiary, and if you didn’t quite understand what Abramoff did when his name hit the headlines in 2006, here’s where you can get it all straight.
