REVIEW: Gyllenhaal, Prince of Persia Delivers Throwback Movie Thrills

Prince of Persia is a maybe-not-so-accurate historical epic based on a video game — and that’s the reason to see it, not stay away from it. By now everyone has seen the pictures of an impossibly buff and buffed Jake Gyllenhaal — his skin looks as if it’s been polished with centuries’ worth of walnut oil — as an ancient Persian warrior. We’ve all laughed derisively at his brooding stare and anachronistic rock-star tresses. But Gyllenhaal gets the last laugh in Prince of Persia : He’s having a great time, he knows he looks awesome and he gets to ride horses. Plus, in the end his character gets the girl, a stunner of a princess named Tomina (though I immediately forgot her name and could henceforth think of her only as Princess Hummina Hummina). If you think you’re above Prince of Persia — and until I saw it, I certainly did — then it’s time to come off your not-so-high horse.

Moment of Truth: Video Games are Out. New York Street Games Are In.

Welcome back to Moment of Truth, Movieline’s weekly spotlight on the best in nonfiction cinema. This week we hear from Matt Levy, the director of the fun new doc New York Street Games , now available on DVD. It’s not often you get a rule book included with a DVD purchase; I think the last time I remember that happening were David Lynch’s notes for unraveling Mullholland Dr. (which didn’t help a damn bit, by the way). But that’s just one of the value-added features of New York Street Games , a half-documentary/half-call to action that challenges viewers to get off their couches, rally the neighbors and the kids, and get that stoopball game going you’ve always dreamed of.

Cat Deeley Talks to Movieline About So You Think You Can Dance’s Changes and Stealing Emmys

Cat Deeley’s hosting gig on So You Think You Can Dance acquaints her with talents who want a quick rise to stardom, but her beginnings in TV happened just as swiftly. The 33-year-old star landed an on-air job in her native UK after sending one self-made audition tape to MTV. That job led to countless others, including hosting duties on Brit reality series The Record of the Year and Reach for the Stars . Now that she emcees the US and UK versions of So You Think You Can Dance , Deeley seems poised for a universal takeover. Ahead of SYTYCD ‘s seventh season premiere tonight on Fox, Deeley spoke with Movieline about her academic past, Emmy aspirations, and how the show will be different without Mary Murphy as a permanent judge.

American Idol Finale: Whatever, Let’s Choose the Real Idol

Well, Lee DeWyze won American Idol ‘s ninth season. There he is crying for us all, and it’s not enough. I’m doing my modified Nancy Kerrigan-in-intense-pain impersonation, personally. “De Whyyyyyyyyyy ze! De Whhhhhhyyyy ze!” I caw. Ugh. That conclusion was a billy club to the knee. You could say the show’s ninth season was its worst yet ( I know I did. ), but a Crystal Bowersox win would’ve rectified some of the angst. Instead, Idol served a lukewarm DeWyze victory at the end of what was an otherwise tremendous finale, and now the whole 120 minutes reeks of an abandoned paint store. I said it. Fear not: There’s plenty of good for all of us to discuss from last night’s celebration — namely a ranking of the evening’s top 10 performances. By the time we’re done, we’ll make our decision about Idol ‘s real winner. Haterade on tap!

Shanghai Trailer: Why, Exactly, Has This Been on the Weinsteins’ Shelf for Two Years?

A foreign trailer for the Weinstein Company’s longest-delayed film, Shanghai , surfaced recently after two years of mythmaking, rumor-mongering and general Web undermining. On the one hand, that’s what happens for better or worse when Harvey Weinstein (or anyone, really — but especially Harvey) drops a movie on his shelf. On the other, while I can’t speak to the full-length feature, why is this even on a shelf in the first place?

Ellen Page Will Work for Tilda

Ellen Page has joined Tilda , HBO’ s thinly veiled Nikki Finke comedy from Oscar-winning writer Bill Condon. The pilot stars Diane Keaton as an intimidating Hollywood blogger and Page as “a morally conflicted creative assistant” in whom Tilda takes a special interest. Guess this means that Stitch N’ Bitch ( the HBO project that the Juno alum was producing with Alia Shawkat and Har Mar Superstar) is dead. [ EW ]

Adrien Brody vs. Gay Goats

It’s not easy to be an actor who inexplicably owns a castle ! So says Adrien Brody, who had a recent problem with the gay goats he accidentally bought: “The more well-endowed goat took a liking to the other one and I swear it was traumatic. There was a lot of crying and goat noises and I felt incredibly guilty and I didn’t know what to do…It’s best when you have goats that are that gay to just let them free.” [ Ace Showbiz via Towleroad ]

Morning Glory Trailer: Wake Up Ron Burgundy

There was a time when Harrison Ford could have taken his part in Morning Glory — as a legendary-but-washed-out news anchor relegated to working on a morning show — and turned it into something really special. Unfortunately that time was almost 30 years ago, before he lost every ounce of his once-considerable charm. Needless to say, the new trailer for Morning Glory could work just a tiny bit better.
