The Verge: Alicja Bachleda

Some roles change an actress’s career, and then some roles change her life. Neil Jordan’s fairy-tale thriller Ondine did both for 27-year-old Alicja Bachleda, who stars in the title role as a mysterious young woman caught in the net of the Irish fisherman Syracuse (Colin Farrell). Revived and stabilized, she is thought by both Syracuse and his physically ailing daughter to possibly be a selkie — the mythical sea-woman creature of Irish folklore. Ondine’s gifts for singing fish into Syracuse’s net and treating the sick girl only compound the suspicion; their increasing closeness sets up a romance both on- and offscreen (Bachleda and Farrell became an item on the set, having a son together in 2008), not to mention a quintessentially Jordan-esque meditation on a woman who isn’t what she appears to be.

Our Commenters of the Week Win a Celebratory Dinner with the Prophetic Brian Dunkleman

Let’s hand it to Brian Dunkleman, or as the textbooks will soon call him, Dunkstradamus: The first-season American Idol co-host knew Simon Cowell’s explosive hit was just a flash in the pan, a sorry excuse for a TV sensation that would wear out its welcome fast. Lo and behold, following the ninth-season finale’s low ratings , he is proven unarguably, gloriously right. He ‘left’ just in time. That oven-fresh smell in the air is victory — and the IKEA cafe Cinammon Rolls our Commenters of the Week will enjoy with the babyfaced psychic. Wee! Ready for extra icing, guys?

The Weekly Andy Cohen WTF Moment: Jerry Seinfeld Calls Out Cohen’s Show as a ‘Jewish Curse’

Why does Bravo’s Senior VP of Production and Programming host a weekly late night talk show where he interviews various reality stars while sipping on a Maker’s Mark? Who knows! Nevertheless, we here at Movieline are going to start covering Andy Cohen’s live oddity Watch What Happens with a regular feature called “The Weekly Andy Cohen WTF Moment.” For the first WTF treatment, Movieline will inspect last night’s typically bizarre episode, which opened with Cohen introducing Jerry Seinfeld as “the most elegant Semite of all the Semites I know” and continued with Seinfeld wondering out loud, “Why am I on this show?”

Universal Unveils Refurbished Back Lot Where Next Generation of Flops Will Be Made

It’s been almost two years since the historic back-lot set known as New York Street burned down at Universal Studios, sending the backdrops to such classics as To Kill a Mockingbird , The Sting and Back to the Future up in plumes of thick, black, haunting smoke. That would be the last studio product to catch fire for a while, alas. But hey, check it out: New York Street is back! And judging by the video below, it really is new and improved.

Real Housewives of New York Reality Check: Jill Zarin Masters the Staged Sneak Attack

Last week on The Real Housewives of New York City , Kelly had a nervous breakdown and had to be airlifted off of the Caribbean island where Ramona was hosting her bachelorette party, but when viewers saw the ladies again last night, most of them were still trapped on the island. It was truly a hostage situation, one complete with mandatory pedicures and a torture session courtesy of special guest Jill Zarin. As always, Movieline assesses which moments hit the Real/Fake jackpot and predicts which housewife will have have the worst cast of post-traumatic stress.

Real Housewives Countess’s Music Video: The ‘Thriller’ of Airbrushing

What ode to class and elegance is complete without a music video featuring an unrecognizably airbrushed reality star and a horde of men spread out at her feet? Not Countess LuAnn de Lesseps new clip for her dubious single “Money Can’t Buy You Class.” That’s for sure. In it, she’s been digitally transformed into an expressionless hybrid of Eva Longoria and, like, old Brenda Starr cartoons. Judging by the level of visual marvel here, this must be the work of John Landis. Hype Williams, I mean? One of those. In the meantime, watch the video and keep chivalry alive after the jump.

Charlie Sheen May Take Jail Time

Just because CBS agreed to pay Charlie Sheen upwards of $1 million per episode does not mean that the Two and a Half Men star’s worries are over — Sheen still has to sort out those allegations that he threatened his wife at knife point on Christmas Eve. Instead of going to trial, TMZ is reporting that the star is seriously considering pleading guilty and serving 30 days in jail. With good behavior, Sheen’s prison stay could be reduced to 17 days. Now, if only Sheen’s criminal defense attorney could just convince the Aspen jail to loosen up on that smoking policy … [ TMZ ]
