CBS Picks Up Bleep My Dad Says, and Other News From the Upfront Trenches

It’s only the beginning of a very exciting upfronts week and already NBC has buried an expensive apocalyptic project and unveiled vaguely racist previews of their new series, while CBS rekindled a relationship with Tom Selleck, Fox announced a Glee -tastic fall schedule, and Movieline paid tribute to the recast actors and predicted which new shows will die first. Still, the day is far from over. Here’s the latest in pilot news.

Jean-Luc Godard, Sean Penn Can’t Be Bothered to Attend Cannes

As our Man in Cannes alluded earlier , there’s a dearth of quality films to hold the interest of this year’s festival attendees. And now there’s also a dearth of quality filmmakers to hold their interest — led by the legendary Jean-Luc Godard, who was hilariously a no-show for the press conference and premiere of his fest entry Film Socialisme . Oh, and for those keeping score at home, Sean Penn isn’t coming either.

Is This Your First Look at Naomi Watts as Marilyn Monroe?

How determined is Andrew Dominik to get his Naomi Watts-toplined Marilyn Monroe film out before a competing one that stars Michelle Williams ? This determined: we already have our first look at Watts as Monroe in Blonde , and the film hasn’t even started shooting yet. Allocine (via The Playlist ) noticed a poster touting the film at Cannes, and there’s speculation that the image came from a fitting or screen test; personally, I thought it was Monroe herself until I squinted real hard (Watts looks a little thinner than the sex siren here). Still looks kinda morphed together! Have a gander at the big version of the image and decide for yourself:

What’s On: Incensing with the Stars

Anyone still freakishly bitter — if unsurprised — that Niecy Nash was sent packing last week on Dancing with the Stars ? Sisterchild, I sure am. At least she was funny. Now we’re left with Chad Ochocinco to zap us with quips and buzzwords and chest clutches, and that’s not the same. At least tonight’s viewing options leave us with many decent alternatives, including the finest film ever about taking over a delirious recluse’s candy empire.

Conan’s New Home

Conan O’B rien’s multi-million-dollar, Mario-evoking studio on the Universal Studios lot is no more. Vulture reports that the new TBS frontman will be heading to the Warner Bros. lot to tape his upcoming basic cable late-nighter. As for the old digs? They should be able to host at least eleven of Jay Leno’s classic cars. [ Vulture ]

George Lucas to Lost Producers: I Made Up Star Wars as I Went Along

In last week’s episode, Lost dipped back in time to tell what was, in effect, the prequel to its main story. It was an episode that was about as well received as George Lucas’s own Star Wars prequels, which makes the fan letter that Lucas just sent the Lost producers all the more poignant — and potentially revealing.

Soderbergh to Go 3D

If David Fincher can mainstream himself enough to direct a megabudget family tentpole , Steven Soderbergh can shoot his next studio film in 3D. He’ll be doing just that with the star-laden virus thriller Contagion , it was announced today — a fact made more interesting by Soderbergh’s tendency to lens all his movies himself. Of course, he’d hoped to crack that visual frontier first with his musical Cleo , but alas, bedbug crazy campfests with Catherine Zeta-Jones singing Guided by Voices are awfully hard to mount.
