Do Better, Hollywood: Dark Skin Actresses Aren’t Just Slaves & Maids

Read more:

Source: Monica Schipper / Getty The conversation on colorism has so many different layers that it becomes exhausting to try and breakdown for the willfully ignorant. Colorism is a direct result of slavery and its effects trickle down in pretty much every area of human life, from the workplace to entertainment industry — especially when it comes to women. Statistics even show that darker skin women receive harsher prison sentences than their lighter-skinned counterparts.   The worst part about the systemic disease is that poisons, obliterates and deteriorates the self-esteem of young, Black girls, who are ultimately the future of the human race. Media shows us that if you’re a dark skin girl, there’s no way you can play the soft, pretty love interest. To them, and most of America, the only roles fit for highly pigmented Black women are that of slaves and maids. “With my flat nose and dark skin, the only parts that came my way were slaves, maids, and a part simply titled 'African Girl.' (Seriously.)” — Miriam Bale (@mimbale) February 27, 2015 When they need a Black girl to play in a predominantly White film, Hollywood execs go straight to the Zendayas and Amandla Stenberg s. Hell, they even let our dark queen Nina Simone be played by fair skin, dominican actress Zoe Saldana . What’s interesting though is that then it comes to making films about slavery, casting directors have no problem finding and hiring dark skin actresses. So crazy how true that is. They always can find trillions of dark skin actors when it’s a slave movie. All the rest of the movies get one to two dark ppl at a time — Barefruitsoul ⚢ (@SweetZenis) July 25, 2019 Don’t get me wrong, we love all the Zendaya’s and Alexandra Shipps, and all shades of Black are beautiful — but it’s time we show young, darker skin Black girls that they’re story is much deeper and richer than slavery. Show them that they’re deserving of the love, attention and praise that their lighter skin counterparts receive in every facet of human life. Be honest, besides Lupita, how many dark skin actresses can you name from the younger generation? And even Lupita wouldn’t be considered young Hollywood. I’m talking Marsai Martin’s class. All of these would be a better actress for Princess Tiana than Zendaya, I love her but we definitely need more dark skin /brown skin representation pic.twitter.com/yZm6fxwYvT — Queen of Blunts (@Erionanunez143) July 21, 2019 And for those who think dark skin Black women are just nagging and complaining, take a moment to look back at how we’re represented in movies that are seen across the globe. It’s not that we’re bitter or angry. Quite the contrary actually. We’re proud of our sisters like Cynthia Erivo who scored the role of Harriet Tubman , one of the most powerful women in the history of women. But we are revolting against the harsh reality that Hollywood is still uncomfortable showcasing dark skin women on the big screen, unless they’re running from Massa or cleaning up behind his family. Ladies and gents, we must do better. For our little Black girls. Hit me up on Twitter @Misskiyonna to share your thoughts.

‘Basketball Wives’ Recap: Shaunie Trolls Evelyn By Inviting Jennifer On The Girls Trip

Read the original:

Source: David Livingston / Getty Tonight’s episode of Basketball Wives starts with Tami and her business partner, and shoe designer, Jessica Rich going over prototypes for Tami’s shoe line. And then OG walks in. Tami invited her because she wants to make sure she’s okay after that brunch. That’s the real reason they’re there. Tami said she’s disappointed in how the brunch went. Obviously, OG is happy to have at least one person in her corner. I other news, Jennifer meets up with Kristen to deliver a letter for her to give to Shaunie. We don’t know what’s in the letter, but basically, Jenn says she’s ready to take some accountability for her messed up actions. Now we’re at Byron and CeCe’s engagement party. Everything looks nice. Malaysia and Jackie come through, and CeCe is happy to see them. However, Malaysia is bummed that Kristen and her husband aren’t there because she feels like their feud with CeCe is killing her family. And guess what, OG ends up showing up later. Malaysia decides to take this time, because it’s the most appropriate moment, to confront OG. Basically, Malaysia tells her that Byron said he never told her to tell that secret. In Malaysia’s mind, OG said that Byron told her to tell everyone. In reality, Byron told OG that it’s okay to talk about it because people already know. There is a difference. Malaysia says it’s the same thing. OG says it’s not. They go in circles for a second, but Malaysia surprisingly decides to shut this conversation down so they can talk another time. Now we’re at Shaunie’s house for her son’s 16th birthday party. The house looks kind of like the house from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air , so that’s the party theme. But the meat of this moment is that Kristen pulls Shaunie aside to give her Jenn’s letter. Shaunie decides to read it in front of Evelyn and Jackie. Basically, Jenn wrote some fluff about how it was nice to see her at her other son’s party, but it’s still a non-apology. Despite that, it’s enough for Shaunie to consider inviting Jenn on their upcoming girls trip to San Diego. Evelyn is definitely not feeling that, but we all know Shaunie is going to invite Jenn. Tami finally reveals that she and Reggie are married. She had a cute little party at her house to make the announcement. Everyone seemed happy for her, even Jackie, who was mad at her but also happy at the same time. You know how Jackie does. Let’s fast forward to San Diego. We find the group headed there in two separate cars. Jenn is present with her friend, Dominique, because she needs at least one person on her side. Feby, Shaunie, and Evelyn ride in one car and the rest, minus Tami, are in the other car. When it comes up that Jenn brought Dominique, it turns out that Evelyn and Dominique don’t like each other either (so, Jenn knew what she was doing). Ev’s group arrives first. The second group of women arrives shortly after and Evelyn gets annoyed at the sight of Jenn from jump. They manage to pick rooms without a hitch and tonight’s episode ends on a low-key note, but next week, the turnup cometh. Evelyn and Jenn are going to get into it for the 1,422,343,415,251 time. Tom Holland & Zendaya Talk Internet Chatter, Euphoria & Spider-Man: Far From Home

The rest is here:

Tom Holland and Zendaya work magic together on the big screen in the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Far From Home. The first movie after the events of Avengers: Endgame, it has a giant responsibility to be great and it doesn’t disappoint. I went out to London in the United Kingdom to sit down with Zendaya, Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years one of the biggest rumors is, “Are Tom Holland and Zendaya dating” and during the press for this movie people have been doing a lot of speculation about that subject in order to get a confirmation. I’m sure there will be even more assumptions after people finally get to see Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd, 2019 when it hits theaters. I asked Tom and Zendaya what are they expecting the chatter to be like once the film is released and Tom, blushed while saying, “The obvious things.” While Zendaya gushed, “It’s there, and it will always be there.”  Tom then revealed he is excited for people to see the movie, “We make this film for the fans, and always like to think we don’t present people with a film, we share a film with them. I’m just excited for the fans to be a part of this process, we’ve all loved being a part of this process and making it and now it’s time to share it and I really can’t wait to hear what people think.” During the rest of the interview, Tom and Jacob talk about watching Euphoria for the first time and what they thought about the show when Zendaya told them she was starring in the latest HBO show. I also asked Zendaya which high school life is more like real life high school, Euphoria or Spider-Man, she said, “It’s two different experiences and it depends on people’s walks of life.” To which Tom poked fun at me saying, You would rather elemental creature destroying their high schools? You would rather Thanos!” The entire interview was fun and definitely worth watching be sure to catch Spider-Man: Far From Home in theaters.

‘Basketball Wives’ Recap: Shaunie Fights The Urge To Lay Hands on Jennifer

Read this article:

Source: David Livingston / Getty Basketball Wives has returned for its eighth season, and it’s still the same messiness we’re used to, but first, we start on a serious note. Shaunie is preparing for her son, Shareef, to get open heart surgery due to a heart abnormality that could lead to death if not corrected. Surgery is obviously no joke and Shaunie is nervous, but she manages to push through and keep the family going during this time. She does have help from Shaq, whom she says is a good co-parent. It’s also sweet to see her son, Myles, comforting her. In the end. Shareef’s surgery ends up being a success. Fast forward to a week later. Jackie’s back. Malaysia’s back. Evelyn’s back. Tami is back as a newlywed (she secretly married Reggie and still hasn’t told anyone). CeCe is back and she still has drama with Kristen. Her fiance, Byron, isn’t thrilled with Kristen at the moment either. Byron feels like Kristen two-faced with him and he definitely doesn’t like how Kristen treated CeCe last season. His final verdict that if he never sees or speaks to Kristen again he’d be cool with that. That sucks because Kristen is married to his son (Thomas) and is the mother of his grandchild. He actually wants Thomas to be his best man in his upcoming wedding to CeCe, but how’s that going to work if he doesn’t want his best man’s wife at the wedding? Next, we find Malaysia and CeCe out and about looking for wedding bands for CeCe. But the point of this scene is really for Malaysia to ask what’s up with her relationship with Kristen. Kristen doesn’t reveal too much, especially not the part about Byron not wanting her at his wedding, but she does mention that she hasn’t spoken to Kirsten since Amsterdam…last year. Malaysia kicks all this yang about how they’re family and need to work it out, but that may not always be the case for people. Evelyn links with Kristen and Jackie to meet with a shaman in the desert. Evelyn has been dealing with a lot of unexplained pain lately and thinks it’s due to negative energy so she wants a cleanse. Speaking of negative, the conversation drifts toward Kristen telling them she hasn’t been in touch with Byron, and that she found out that he and CeCe got engaged on IG. She’s playing the clueless role but when you find out something like that about someone close to you on social media, obviously there’s a problem. Let’s fast forward a bit. Jennifer is back too. Kristen is her only friend and meets up with her to see what’s up. Obviously, Jenn hasn’t spoken to anyone, and still won’t take accountability for lying, which is why people are mad at her. But Kristen invites her to Shaunie’s upcoming party though. Yeah, Shaunie is having a celebratory party for Shareef. Let’s cut to that situation. Everyone shows up in red because that represents the heart, obvi. But let’s cut to the drama. CeCe walks in and walks right past Kristen and her husband. Awkward. Then we find Kristen with Shaunie. Kristen tells Shaunie that she met with Jennifer and that Jenn is confused over why Shaunie is upset with her but Kristen, being the messy carrier pigeon she is, also tells Shaunie that Jenn was talking even more smack about her ex (Shaq, but they’re not saying his name), and how everyone knew that he was sleeping with other people anyway. Obviously, this riles Shaunie up because she doesn’t like Jenn talking about her kids’ father and she feels that Jenn is still being fake. Kristen then drops the bomb that she invited Jenn. Earlier in the episode, Shaunie said she didn’t invite Jenn but she was open to the possibility of her coming for the simple fact that Jenn actually reached out to her about her son’s health, and for that if Jenn wanted to show her son love in person, so be it. However, hearing the news she just heard changed things. Shaunie tells Kristen to tell her “evil” friend not to come. Hold that thought, because you know she’s still gonna come. Evelyn then tells Kristen what CeCe told her earlier at the party, which is that Byron doesn’t want Kristen to come to their wedding. Kristen can’t have this chat without Malaysia, so she calls Malaysia over for Evelyn to repeat this. Interestingly enough, neither Kristen nor Malaysia actually thinks Byron would ever exclude her, yet we clearly saw him earlier saying that he never wanted to talk to Kristen again. Their communication (or Kristen’s self-perception) is jacked up. Anyway, Malaysia, who thinks Byron would never, wants them all to get together to talk…for the umpteenth time. Finally, Jenn shows up to the party and she is being fake as expected. Shaunie gets set off just at the site of Jenn and decides to leave (or step out) before she, as she put it loosely, tap into her inner Inglewood and beat that arse. But somebody is going to throw hands this season. BOSSIP Exclusive: Algee Smith Talks “Euphoria” Sex Scenes And His Upcoming Album

Source: Kevin Winter/ Getty / Getty Algee Smith Discusses Shocking New Series “Euphoria” And Upcoming Music Project Algee Smith has been incredible to watch in projects like “The New Edition Story,” ‘Detroit’ and ‘The Hate U Give’ so we were ecstatic to have an opportunity to speak with him about his latest role as Christopher McKay in the much buzzed about new HBO series “Euphoria.” Check out our Q&A with the gifted actor and musician below: Source: Lamar Valentine / BlogXilla BOSSIP: There’s been so much buzz about this show, but nobody seems to know exactly what it is. Tell us about your character Chris McKay. ALGEE SMITH: Christopher McKay… He’s a very interesting character to be honest, he’s the best friend of Nate, who is one of the stars of the show. He’s a freshman in college on the football team, but things aren;’t going the way he wants them to go. He’s in kind of a bind with his dad because they have a kind of weird relationship where they’ve built a relationship on work ethic since he was younger and not so much father/son. Also he’s dealing with a girlfriend he has, Cassie, where he’s trying to figure out how to be vulnerable but hold onto his masculinity at the same time. It’s a lot that he’s dealing with. BOSSIP: When you saw this project what made you want to do it? Algee Smith: That bread [laughs], I just… to be honest I went on one initial audition at the casting office for a completely different character and I didn’t hear back for months but then I got a call from Sam [Levinson] and he wanted to sit down and have lunch with me. So I sat down with with him and he started explaining this other character McKay and as soon as he mentioned him I started to connect with the role and we started bouncing ideas back and forth, like ‘we can take McKay here… ‘ It was kind of set in stone. Then when I got the script I was like ‘damn this is crazy, I gotta be part of this.’ BOSSIP: We’ve seen a lot of press about the amount of nudity and drug use in the show and it’s alarming because it’s high school… Algee Smith: It’s set in High School, I’m the only one in college, everyone else is in their senior year. It just dives into — NOW– it’s pretty much just taking those ideas and taking them to the extreme, and showing what can happen when you do take them to the extreme or showing you the flip side like this is why you shouldn’t do those things. If you don’t have something like this that’s in your face you can’t truly make a decision. BOSSIP: How difficult was it doing all these sex scenes? AS: One of the main things I talk about is — I won’t give it away but I have this scene in one episode and it really challenged me as a man to do that scene. It was an uncomfortable scene for me, but I had to learn how to separate myself and just be the actor because someone might be dealing with that type. I had to get over my masculinity issues, as a black man we often have to realize it’s okay to be in this position for a minute. It’s not something that makes you less of a man but some things we just don’t feel comfortable with, like some men don’t feel okay crying. Hit the flip to continue…
