Cloud Atlas, Lana & Andy Wachowski Score Standing Ovation At Secret Fantastic Fest Debut

“ What is an ocean but a multitude of drops? ” The affecting spirit of Cloud Atlas was palpable last night as Fantastic Fest unveiled its second Secret Screening — the ambitious sci-fi adaptation — with Lana and Andy Wachowski (“Formerly the Wachowski brothers, now Wachowski Starship,” quipped Andy) making a rare public appearance. The Wachowskis, who wrote and directed the ensemble epic with Tom Tykwer ( Run Lola Run ), are notoriously press shy . But Cloud Atlas , adapted from David Mitchell’s novel about humanity, interconnectivity, transformation and free will, is much more a personal mission statement than their last few Matrix hits and the typically daring Fantastic Fest crowd made for a perfect fit, anointing Cloud Atlas with an also-rare post-screening standing ovation. Following an unprecedented structure, Cloud Atlas flits back and forth between six disparate stories of characters in different eras and lands, each story connected by a thread — a journal, a piece of music, a collection of handwritten letters, an oral history — the same actors (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Yhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, and Susan Sarandon) playing multiple characters throughout. In any given minute Cloud Atlas may jump from a mercantile ship circa 1849 to 1936 Europe, 1973 San Francisco, futuristic Neo Seoul, present-day England, or a remote village “106 winters after The Fall.” Lana, speaking after the screening, described the story’s structure akin to skipping stones — “only it’s a narrative structure that skipped pieces.” In today’s world of self-inflicted multimedia ADD, as we divide our attentions between cell phones and texts and television and the constant din, however, doing a bit of brain-juggling to sort it all out should only be easier. Still, the cumulative effect may prove disorienting to some viewers, particularly since some characters’ motivation can get lost in the sprawl. (The original script ran 275 pages, according to Andy Wachowski: “The book is so rich that we had a lot of dead babies in the end.”) But where Cloud Atlas soars is in its emotional richness and stirring sentimentality; it’s a challenging film that asks a lot of its audience but wears its heart on its sleeve, swelling with genuine humanity and a deceptively simple provocation: Will you allow yourself to be changed by the love and kindness of another? The Wachowskis and Tykwer add to Mitchell’s text the use of multiple actors in multiple roles, often obscured via makeup and prosthetics, and frequently (controversially) transformed into other races and ethnicities. Hanks’s alter egos as a British thug with a terrible accent and later (or rather, earlier) a ginger-haired, knob-nosed 19th century doctor test the limits of believability. But Sturgess, transformed via prosthetics as a 22nd century Korean freedom fighter, is actually quite wonderful; disappearing into the role beneath his “Asian” face, Sturgess does some of his finest work to date and “transforms” into a bona fide action star in the Neo Seoul segment’s Matrix -esque action sequences. The race issue is just the opposite in Cloud Atlas — whites plays Asian, Asians play latina, men play women (and when it’s Hugo Weaving as a Nurse Ratched type, boy, whatta woman). And it’s not just exterior boundaries that get toyed with; Cloud Atlas ‘s movie stars play background parts in various segments, too. That Korean actress Doona Bae — a force to be reckoned with as the futuristic “fabricant” Sonmi-451, a clone with soul and a Joan of Arc haircut — steals so much of the film is an acting coup and a stroke of meta-storytelling genius. Cloud Atlas also soars on its hauntingly evocative score by Twyker, who wrote the film’s music and key themes before filming began. The Wachowskis’ minds were blown by the process, and they described it as akin to discovering the world was not, in fact, flat. “We’ll never go back,” they said. “[Now] we’re round-earthers.” Read more on Cloud Atlas , in theaters October 26. Nicki Minaj Calls Grammy Performance Roman’s ‘Coming-Out Party’

‘I’ve been writing this story for a long time,’ rapper tells Ryan Seacrest of her alter ego Roman Zolanski. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj performs at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj nearly stole the show at the 2012 Grammy Awards when she performed her frenetic Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track, “Roman Holiday.” Rife with religious symbolism, the performance welcomed her alter-ego Roman Zolanski to the Grammy stage for the first time. On Monday (February 13), Minaj called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to give her take on the red-hot performance. “Well, [that religious character I walked the carpet with] is a major part of the story and the movie that I’m writing about one of my alter egos; his name is Roman,” she said. “Basically, the religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman’s mom [Martha] to rehabilitate him. I wasn’t going to do the red carpet, so you know I was backstage prepared … my people wanted me to do it. I had this amazing robe made for me by Versace sent from Milan and I said, ‘I have to wear this.’ They were so generous, and I was going to originally wear it in the performance, but then when I got it, it was a little heavy for the performance. “I had this vision for Roman. I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised … people around tell him he’s not good enough because he’s not normal. So his mother is scared and the people around him are afraid. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing, but he’s never going to be exorcised, even when they throw holy water on him, he still rises above.” In fact, when MTV News caught up with Minaj in late 2011, she shared the origins of this particular plotline. “Well, he was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there,” she said. “So they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him.” Minaj told Seacrest that she feels the performance, choreographed by Laurieann Gibson and directed by Hype Williams, was a success. “It’s funny because it was the most comfortable I’ve been in my entire life,” she said. “The Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday.’ They heard ‘Roman Holiday’ and I could not play them another record after that. I have to stay true to what I’m doing … my fanbase, they understand every single thing. Roman was created two years ago. I’ve been writing the story for a long time and yesterday was his coming-out party. It just was very literal and streamlined if you know who Roman is and if you don’t know the Roman character, you have to digest it. While she has no plans to recreate that Grammy performance, she has made it clear several times to MTV News that this April will kick off the era of Roman. In a previous interview with Minaj, she explained that Roman is definitely her favorite alter-ego. “[He’s] bad. That’s why I like Roman,” she said. “I think I started liking Roman more because everybody else starting like Roman, so he became my favorite. People are expecting him to do some real craziness on the next album.” The over-the-top spectacle was, in part, inspired by her Super Bowl performance with Madonna. “Meeting Madonna changed my life. This performance was it, and this is the first performance I’m proud of in my whole life. Madonna was the first person in history who was able to make me change my wig,” she said of the Queen of Pop’s undeniable influence over her. “When you see her vision, it’s like, ‘Oh, OK. If someone this talented and this rich is still giving it this much [then I should too].’ ” And, she explained that she cares so much for Madge as an artist that she felt “disappointment” over M.I.A.’s headline-grabbing middle finger salute . “Even though I’m a coo-coo lady too, I would never be able to do it off the strength of Madonna,” she said. “We’re kind of all firecrackers.” What did you think of Nicki’s alter ego Roman? Scotty McCreery, Casey Abrams Rack Up ‘American Idol’ Twitter Followers

Haley Reinhart, Naima Adedapo have smallest Twitter followings, a metric that seems to mirror ‘Idol’ voting trends and popularity. By Gil Kaufman Scott McCreery Photo: FOX There are so many ways to quantify which “American Idol” finalists are popping with voters. From the screams and elaborate signs in the IdolDome on Wednesday nights to the number of weird promotional items being offered on eBay and bootleg fan sites that pop up to encourage power-voting , “Idol” popularity is a tricky thing to measure. One of the best new ways, though, is to track the contestants’ Twitter account and see who has the most followers. After stumbling out of the gate with their social-networking efforts last year, amid worries that loose lips might ruin the show’s finale, the “Idol” top 11 are back in effect on Twitter and chatting it up with their online fans, The Hollywood Reporter noted. The move makes sense, since for the first time in the show’s history, followers can vote online this year and the contestants can use their tweet smarts to curry more favor. On the one hand, the list of top personal Twitter pages reflects the pecking order of the singers this season, with bullfrog-voiced country crooner Scotty McCreery topping the tally with 49,173 followers. But when you see that Casey Abrams is #2 on the roster (47,824), even after nearly being eliminated last week, it makes you wonder if Twitter is a good indicator of popularity. Coming in at #3 is bearded smoothie Paul McDonald (40,295 followers), with leading contender Pia Toscano close on his heels (34,271) and (at press time) just ahead of teen Lauren Alaina (34,250). Bottom-three visitor and fellow teen Thia Megia (32,922) is at #6, sneaking ahead of resident rocker James Durbin (32,772), followed by another bottom-three veteran, Stefano Langone (30,340), gospel crooner Jacob Lusk (19,864) and two-time bottom-three dweller Haley Reinhart (19,043). Not surprisingly, the list is rounded out by eliminated contestants Karen Rodriguez (17,572) and Ashthon Jones (7,978). In a troubling sign, wild-card singer Naima Adedapo , who has hit the bottom three once, is sandwiched in between the two eliminated singers at #12 on the list with 15,538 followers. McCreery might lead the list, but his tweets are mostly bland platitudes, many of them devoted to announcing when he’s hitting the hay, extolling the virtues of Cap’n Crunch, excitement about meeting boxing great Muhammad Ali and playing catch with the show’s security guards. “Not much going on right now. Just got outta rehearsal and now I’m just layin’ on the bed looking at the ceiling,” he wrote as the first week of live performance shows was getting under way. “Thinking about life.” Abrams, who has teased McCreery about the cowboy’s trouble in figuring out Twitter, talked about his trips to the hospital , fielded offers to jam from former finalist Andrew Garcia and entertained album title suggestions for his many Twitter alter egos, including “Lumberjack” and “Paul Bunyan.” McDonald has kept things pretty business-like and focused on show-related details, while high-schooler Alaina is typically active on the service, mostly expressing her love for her fans, a tactic also employed by Toscano. Durbin keeps things focused on professional wrestling and entreaties to bring back real rock , while Megia thanks her “Thianatic” followers and frequent tweeter Langone gets lots of love from past “Idol” contestants (Lee DeWyze, David Archuleta, Michael Sarver) and their followers amid spirited defenses of his mother. Although the “Idol” kids live in a media bubble, Lusk has lamented the passing of rap luminary Nate Dogg . Reinhart has made her feed a fount of excitable comments to fans and fellow contestants. Adedapo might be the most active tweeter, responding to fan and friend comments throughout the day on an almost minute-by-minute basis, sharing details about her children and keeping in touch with her fan-generated TeamNaima feed. The Reporter noted that the seven most-followed contestants have all been considered fan favorites at some point this season, with Abrams and Megia the only ones to hit the bottom three. Four of the six least-followed were wild-card picks, with five of them dropping into the bottom three at least once since the semi-finals. Which “Idol” finalist are you following on Twitter? Justin Bieber Cuts His Famous Hair

Star unveils new ‘do on ‘That Should Be Me’ video set. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber gets his hair cut Photo: TMZ After months of teasing that he might cut his famous hair, Justin Bieber debuted a shorter ‘do Monday. TMZ got the lowdown from the pop sensation on his new look. Photos of the cropped cut — courtesy of his hair stylist, Vanessa — appeared on the website Monday. In one photo, Bieber is with Gary LeVox, lead singer of Rascal Flatts, on the set of the video for their duet, “That Should Be Me,” from Bieber’s Never Say Never – The Remixes . Biebs explained that he “wanted to change it up” and that he thought the cut was “kind of a mature look.” He will turn 17 next month, so perhaps the new ‘do is a step in an older direction for the teen star. So, what will happen to the remains of his famous former swoop? Well, TMZ reports the clippings will be given to charity to raise money for various causes, including animal rights. In December, Bieber foreshadowed the perfect timing for a haircut, saying, “I think after my movie, I might cut my hair a little shorter.” It was a sentiment he first shared with Barbara Walters . Last year, Bieber’s pal and maybe girlfriend, Selena Gomez , admitted that she wanted to shear off his locks. “Everybody wants to cut his hair. I want to cut his hair!” she revealed in October. “You’re with him and you have, like, a 45-second conversation and it’s like, [he’s flicking his hair the entire time], and I’m like, ‘Why are you doing that?!’ ” What do you think of JB’s new ‘do? Nicki Minaj’s Career Full Of Life-Altering Moments

A look at Pink Friday star’s highlights as ‘Moment 4 Life’ video debuts. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: Christopher Polk/ AMA2010/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj ‘s “Moment 4 Life” is an inspirational joint in which the Queens MC speaks with naked emotion about living out her dreams. The accompanying visual, which Minaj’s Young Money labelmate Drake has called “a fantasy video,” is slated to premiere Thursday (January 27) at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. In honor of the Pink Friday star’s latest video, MTV News is taking a look at some of Minaj’s real-life fairytale moments, from getting co-signs from Lil Wayne and Jay-Z to scoring her own lipstick shade. Weezy Introduces Nicki After spotting the lyrical spitfire on a street DVD series, Wayne roped the promising Queens native into his Young Money collective. Minaj hit the road with Weezy on the I Am Music Tour and later dropped her breakout mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty in 2009. DJ Holiday, who hosted Scotty with Minaj, predicted the upstart spitter had a bright future ahead. “It’s a good opportunity to always find that new chick in the game,” he said. “She’s gonna have a good, successful career. It’s hard to find that somebody who has that niche, that star power. She can rap, she can sing. She connected with everybody in the streets.” Nicki Gets A Jay-Z Co-Sign She already had Wayne in her corner, but by early 2010, Nicki got an endorsement from another powerful Carter: Jay-Z . Hov suggested to Robin Thicke that Minaj jump on the crooner’s “Shakin’ It 4 Daddy,” a collabo that would be followed by high-profile matchups with everyone from Mariah Carey to Usher. Thicke even helped ramp up Minaj’s profile by trotting her out for performances on “106 & Park” and “The Late Show With David Letterman.” “Jay-Z is a person in hip-hop that you almost don’t think he exists until you meet him,” Minaj explained to MTV News last February. “It’s almost like he’s bigger than a person. He’s a mythical figure. That’s a great way to describe it. I was like, ‘Jay-Z knows me?’ I didn’t think he knew who I was, let alone recommend me for something.” Minaj Rocks Madison Square Garden with Wayne, Jay, Drake For New York-area hip-hop artists, ripping the Madison Square Garden stage is a status-cementing moment that few are able to realize. But not only did the Young Money Barbie perform on the famed stage, she got to take the mic alongside Jigga, Wayne and Drake when Hov touched down on 34th Street for his Blueprint 3 Tour. “Madison Square Garden? I’m from New York,” Minaj said at the time. “This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake. It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl. Girls aren’t usually in those unique little circles.” Nicki Lands a BET Award Proving she was becoming an unstoppable force, Minaj managed to snap up her first major award with no album out. The Young Money raptress snagged Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the 2010 BET Awards in June, solely on the strength of her much-bumped mixtapes and features with everyone from Ludacris to Yo Gotti. Minaj took the moment to comment about the state of female MCs, and, perhaps, subtly send a message of peace to fellow femcee Lil’ Kim , who had been throwing jabs at the lyricist. “I think it’s so important right now for positive energy among women,” she said. “I’m fighting for women.” Nicki Scores VMA Love Later in the summer, with her #1 hit “Your Love” getting pumped in cars and clubs across the nation, Minaj scored her first MTV VMA nomination for Best New Artist . “I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven,” Minaj said about her debut VMA nom. “I definitely thought I’d get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I’d get a nomination [this year]. … I didn’t even think I’d get invited!” Minaj went on to rock “Check It Out” at the pre-show in a space-age catsuit alongside will.i.am. Minaj and Drake Get Hitched — On the Web The voluptuous lyricist and her heartthrob labelmate nearly brought the Internet to its knees when they announced they were married on their respective Twitter accounts. Although the union turned out to just be a playful prank, her Barbz’ heads almost exploded the one weekend she appeared to be off the market. “Drake is just my little brother, and I kid with him all the time,” she explained of the pretend nuptials. “We were just being crazy. I think we were a little bit bored. There’s really never a dull moment. I wouldn’t say we were bored; I would say we were being mischievous.” Minaj Rips Up Legends on ‘Monster’ As she was playing Internet pranks, Kanye West’s “Monster” track dropped, and asserted Minaj’s lyrical dominance to anyone who might have doubted the spitter’s vocal chops. Helming the last verse on a star-studded posse cut that includes Jay, ‘Ye and Rick Ross, Minaj’s beastly attitude, demented lyrics and unabashedly badass flow handily outshined her more-established collaborators. “It was a moment in history,” Ross later said of Nicki’s verse. “I knew then she’s one of the greatest.” Minaj’s and Eminem’s Alter Egos Up the Ante Just before Minaj’s much-anticipated Pink Friday debut dropped in November, the MC revealed she had scored a rare, top-notch feature for a debut artist: Eminem. Minaj and Em traded bars as their deranged alter egos on “Roman’s Revenge,” which arguably quieted any doubts about her status as full-fledged rap force. “It was the most fun song on Pink Friday ,” she said. “It gave me life.” Minaj Kisses Fame Hello with Her Own Lipstick Even with monster records with big boys of hip-hop like Kanye and Em under her belt, Minaj proved she’s still the ultimate girl’s girl by unveiling her own lipstick with MAC . Minaj nearly caused a riot in Times Square when she went to greet fans milling about to check out the Pink Friday special-edition shade. “She keeps it real and is so personable,” an amped fan told MTV News about her “idol.” “The guys give her respect because of her lyrics.” Minaj’s “My Time Now” Documentary Premieres Following in the footsteps of Drake, Minaj let MTV’s cameras tail her as she prepped Pink Friday, hit the VMAs and traveled to her native Trinidad for the first time in seven years for “My Time Now.” Viewers not only saw her business skills up close and got a glimpse as she laid down the vocals for “Roman’s Revenge,” they also received a candid look at her family life and the person behind the pink wigs. “Everybody sees Nicki Minaj; they’re gonna meet Onika. They’re gonna hear my story, and it’s such an inspirational story, which I never really wanted to tell ’cause everyone always feels like you don’t want people to know too much,” Minaj said of the project . “But when I saw what [MTV and production company @radical.media] did, I thought, ‘People need to see this.’ It reminds you that everyone always feels like this is it, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and I feel like that’s what the doc says at the end.” Pink Friday ‘s Big Debut When her debut album finally hit shelves, it was clear the Barbie army was in effect. Minaj’s first outing hit the Billboard 200 at #2 , just behind Kanye West, moving 375,000 units in the first week. “I’m just so grateful and kind of still in shock. These numbers haven’t been put up since 1998,” she said, referring to Lauryn Hill’s debut. “It just makes me feel proud of my team, proud of my fans, everyone who has had something to do with my dreams. Finally, we are seeing this dream come to fruition. It feels incredible.” Minaj Live: “Saturday Night Live” and I Am Music II Tour In January, it was announced that Minaj, who once studied acting in high school, would be the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this Saturday alongside “The Social Network” star Jesse Eisenberg. And earlier this week, Lil Wayne’s camp announced the newly freed rapper would be heading out on the I Am Music II Tour in March, and just like she was two years ago, Minaj would be along for the ride. Don’t miss the premiere of ‘s “Moment 4 Life” video, featuring Drake, tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by a live interview with the Young Money femcee that will continue on MTV.com. Robert Pattinson Says Bella And Jacob’s Relationship Is ‘Easier’

‘Edward’s got to remember, or learn, how to be a normal 17-year-old,’ ‘Eclipse’ star says of love triangle. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News If you pay attention to the tabloids, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are either about to get engaged, or one “Twilight” co-star has gone ahead and dumped the other. It’s all too silly to pay attention to, and it proves how complicated it is for RPattz and KStew to have a relationship of any kind while so fully in the public eye. And the relationship of their fictional alter egos, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan , isn’t any easier. He was transformed into a deadly vampire in 1918; she’s a normal, accident-prone high school girl growing up in the Pacific Northwest. You can see why Pattinson might think Jacob Black is in many ways a better fit for Bella than Edward is. No matter that Black is a shape-shifting werewolf. “Their relationship is so much easier, Bella and Jacob, because he’s just a normal kid,” Pattinson told MTV News. “Edward’s got to remember, or learn, how to be a normal 17-year-old, because he’s never bothered.” As Pattinson describes it, Edward spent the first two movies in the vampire franchise remaining largely aloof, even going so far as to leave Bella in “New Moon,” deciding that she’d be better off without him. All that changes in “Eclipse,” and Edward has to play some serious cultural catch-up. It’s anything but easy. “[T]he whole thing is him having to accept the consequences of [being with Bella], which means catching up to the same pace of every other 17-year-old in the contemporary world, emotionally and intellectually and everything, and realizing he’s quite a long way behind,” Pattinson said. Does RPattz have a point about Edward and Bella, or is he just being humble? Share your analyses in the comments. We’ll be

Ashley Tisdale To Star In ‘High School Musical’ Spin-Off

Actress will reportedly return to Disney Channel for ‘Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventures.’ By Jocelyn Vena Ashley Tisdale Photo: Eric Charbonneau/ Getty Images Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron and Corbin Bleu have all said goodbye to their “High School Musical” alter egos for now, but apparently Ashley Tisdale wasn’t ready to just yet. She’s reportedly going to play Sharpay Evans again in her own spin-off film for the Disney Channel called, “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventures.” A rep for the actress hadn’t returned MTV News’ request for comment by press time, but the rep did confirm to JustJared.com that Tisdale will star in and executive produce the movie, which will shoot this summer. It’s expected to premiere in 2011. There is no word on whether any of her former “High School Musical” pals (particularly Lucas Grabeel who plays her twin brother, Ryan) will also return for the TV-movie. “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” hit theaters in 2008, and there have been rumors that “High School Musical 4” is expected to go into production. While Tisdale and her co-stars seemed ready to try new projects after “HSM 3,” she didn’t rule out playing Sharpay again. “We don’t really know anything about ‘HSM 4,’ actually. It’s flattering to leave the door open for a character, so that’s really awesome,” she said in late 2008. “I’m just kind of looking forward to other projects as well. It’s something that we’ve always loved to do … and [we’re looking forward to] growing in our careers and looking ahead.” Tisdale has been busy with several non-“HSM” TV and movie projects, including the comedy “They Came From Upstairs” and a pilot for a CW series called “Hellcats.” Tisdale also started her own production company, Blondie Girl Productions .
