William Friedkin 10-Word Review Contest: Win Tickets to Killer Joe

William Friedkin barrels into theaters this Friday with Killer Joe , boldly adapted from Tracy Letts’ ultra-violent Southern-fried play about a Texas lawman/assassin who ingratiates himself into the family of the low rent punk ( Emile Hirsch ) who’s hired him to murder his mother. Los Angeleno Movieliners, grab a bucket of fried chicken and your twisted wits and dive into our latest 10-word review contest, tackling any of Friedkin’s cinematic output for a chance to win tickets to see Killer Joe this Thursday! Movieline has five (5) pairs of tickets to attend a special screening of Killer Joe this Thursday, July 26 at 7:30pm at the Arclight in Hollywood — attendees must be 18 and over, due to its unapologetic NC-17 rating. To win, enter your best 10-word review of any William Friedkin movie and Movieline’s editors will select the five best, boldest, most original entries. Where to start? Maybe with landmark crime pic The French Connection , which won Friedkin the Oscar for Best Director. Or The Exorcist , his nightmare-inducing, Oscar-winning horror classic? Or Sorcerer , or Cruising , or To Live and Die in L.A. , Blue Chips , Jade , Bug … so much Friedkin! Have at it, and remember: Entries must be exactly ten words, only one post per person, and make sure to include your email address when you enter. Contest will end Tuesday, July 24, at 3pm PT/6pm ET. Winners will notified via email. Killer Joe hits theaters in limited release on Friday.

The YouTube hits just keep coming today, with one rare Disney-defying treat giving way to another: Take a break and hear eccentric Detachment and American History X filmmaker Tony Kaye’s candid lament for John Carter and passionate appeal for a huge budget of his own. What’s not to love? “For $250 million, I could make…” Kaye expounds, eyes beaming and hands raised. “People’s minds would explode. I’m good as gold. Fucking trust me. Fucking trust me! You don’t give an animation director $250 million.” Stick around for a wealth of storytelling about Kaye’s near-miss at Disney 40 years ago and subsequent Hollywood misadventures. You knew The Hunger Games would open big , but this big? Meet your new bona fide box office powerhouse franchise: Taking in $19.75 million at midnight showings around the country, Lionsgate’s PG-13 action-romance earned the #1 all-time non-sequel midnight debut, outperforming even The Dark Knight ‘s 2008 $18 million midnight. We’ve got another true blue four-quadrant blockbuster on our hands, people! If you’re sitting bleary-eyed at your desk right now with a happy smile on your face from last night’s late night debut, share your reactions after the jump. Here’s my happy Hunger Games midnight madness story: I arrived for the 12:15 am showing at the Arclight in Hollywood to a scene of PURE. CHAOS. By which I mean the garage was packed, the lobby resembled a refugee camp, and the bar was swarming with bodies jockeying for a drink like it was the Cornucopia. A man, bellied up to the bar, screamed into his phone to some unfortunate person on the other end, ” I’ve been up for 36 hours and I’m not fit to come back to the hospital and I’m going to the cinema, dammit! ” Which is how I knew The Hunger Games would hit all five quadrants, the fifth being drunken 40-year-old male doctors on their one night off. I mean, behold: The film played exceedingly well in my theater, and the entire place was buzzing once the credits rolled. But the real bloodbath? Getting out of the parking garage. Did you see The Hunger Games at midnight? Are you planning on seeing it this weekend? Leave your thoughts and box office prognostications below. [ Deadline ]

Which Former Donkey Kong World Champ Inspired Colin Farrell’s Horrible Bosses Character?

As Jason Sudeikis ‘s coke-snorting, kung fu-practicing, pot-bellied new supervisor in Horrible Bosses , which notched an impressive number 2 box office slot last weekend, second to Michael Bay ‘s 3-D robotstravaganza Transformers: Dark of the Moon , Colin Farrell is a revelation of douchebag assholery, the last person you’d want above you in the workplace food chain. (Well, one of them.) But which former gaming world champion deserves credit for loosely inspiring portions of Farrell’s characterization — and could Farrell portray this muse one day on the big screen?

Katy Perry Joins ‘Glee’ Actor Darren Criss For ‘Teenage Dream’ Duet

Singer takes the stage with ‘Glee’ guest star at Trevor Project fundraiser Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry and Darren Criss Photo: Angela Weiss/ Toby Canham/ Getty Images While Katy Perry and “Glee” guest star Darren Criss have both had chart success with Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” the two had yet to perform the track together. Criss originally performed the tune on the hit Fox show, while Perry released it earlier this year as the second single from her album of the same name. The two finally took the stage together for the first time at the Trevor LIVE annual fundraising event held at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday night. Criss, dressed in a suit, was performing the track with the show’s Dalton Academy Warblers, when Perry, dressed in a sequin dress, hit the stage to belt out the last bit of the tune. Footage of the performance hit the Net shortly after the event. Other performances for the night included a spoken-word number from Queen Latifah as well as the Hollywood Bowl cast of “Rent” singing “Seasons of Love” and “Will I.” Kathy Griffin was honored by “Glee” star Jane Lynch for donating her paycheck from an L.A.-area stand-up gig to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. Some of the other names in attendance included Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Arquette, Sarah Silverman, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Kate Walsh, Wayne Brady, Justin Long, Joe Manganiello, Kristin Davis, Brittany Snow, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Josh Duhamel, Anna Kendrick, James Marsden and Jessica Alba. “She’s been really sweet,” Criss said of Perry’s support after his “Teenage Dream” performance on “Glee.” ” … It’s a great tune. I really lucked out that I got to sing that song. I mean, you’ve gotta sing what they give you.” Whose version of “Teenage Dream” do you prefer: Katy’s or Darren’s? Or do you prefer their joint version? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry
